La Mirada Christmas Tree recycling program underway

La Mirada- Residents can take vantage of the city's Christmas

Tree Recycling Program now through Friday, January 18 in one of two ways.

For residents that have curbside trash pickup, any live tree including flocked trees will be recycled and should be left out near the curb on trash collection day.

Residents not having curbside trash pickup can take their tree to be recycled to the La Mirada City Gymnasium at Regional Park at 15105 Alicante Rd.

The La Mirada Public Works Dept. which is helping to coordinate the effort with Edco asks that all decorations be removed before setting the tree curbside.

Man wielding a knife in La Mirada store arrested

Weds. January 2, 2019.

La Mirada- A man that reportedly brandished a knife inside a discount store was arrested after leading deputies on a short foot pursuit early this afternoon.

Deputies responded quickly to the 99-Cent Store in the 14500 block of Leffingwell Rd. at 12;24 p.m. after Norwalk Sheriff's 911 dispatchers were told that man was waving a knife at customers and employees.

Deputies, aided by a Sheriff's Air-Unit quickly contained the shopping center after learning the man had walked out of the store only seconds before deputies arrived at the store.

The Sheriff's Aero crew directed deputies to the rear of the shopping center where they had spotted the man and he was in handcuffs shortly after leading deputies on a brief foot chase that ended across the street at Armsdale Av and Richvale Dr.

Paramedics were called to attend to the suspect and was later transported from the scene by Care Ambulance. No further information was immediately available about his condition.

Sheriff's News Roundup: La Mirada school goes into lockdown after gun scare

La Mirada- A report of an armed man near a school sent deputies responding en-masse to Escalona Elementary last week. The report later determined to be unfounded came from a teacher after students stated they spotted a man holding a gun during an argument just outside the school.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown until the all-clear was given.

Deputies ordered the surrender of the alleged suspects at gunpoint, but no weapon was ever found, and an investigation determined that no crime occurred and the students were never in any danger.

A Sheriff's Department source said everyone concerned did the right thing, from the kids telling the teacher, to the school calling 911 immediately and going into lockdown.

The message here is if in doubt call now, and let our deputies ask questions later.

* Early Christmas Eve morning Buena Park Police chased a pair of carjacking suspects into La Mirada where they crashed near the Celebrity Burger on Alondra Blvd near Stage Rd. One suspect was immediately arrested and a search was conducted for the second and was reportedly found near the railroad tracks behind Dunkle Bros.

* A kitchen fire early Christmas morning in the 14600 block of Gandesa Rd. sent one person to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.

* A felony arrest early Monday was made after an accident at Valley View Av and Stage Rd was determined to involve a driver that was DUI, becoming a felony because person(s) were injured.

Additional fire resources were called to the 2:21 a.m. accident to aid in the rescue of a person trapped in the wreckage.

Deploying drones and fining homeowners considered in illegal firework crackdown next 4th

La Mirada- At its December study session, the city council revisited the issue of what actions the city should take to combat the growing problem illegal fireworks have become in the city.

Council members directed city staff in July to explore several ideas they proposed including the use of drones that could be employed to assist authorities in
a promised crackdown in 2019.

The renewed effort follows an avalanche of complaints from the community directed at city officials and voiced on social media and mirrored in a city report that the use of illegal fireworks was getting worse in La Mirada.

A city staff report detailing fireworks enforcement dated July 10, 2018, showed the number of complaints deputies responded to from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. had nearly doubled from 23 in 2016, to 43 in 2018.

A proposal to use drones to aid in identification and apprehension of violators has gained the most attention and proved controversial based on the concerns voiced on social media sites.

A city staff report back to council on the proposal noted that due to privacy concerns the Sheriff's Department does not use drones in local law enforcement efforts.

After considering the expense as well as FAA hurdles the city would incur by starting its own program the report recommends that council members consider contracting with a private company at an estimated cost of $175 per hour.

The response from the public on social media has ranged from support to those expressing privacy concerns and the growing footprint of 'big brother' in their daily lives.

The city council is also expected to approve a proposal that allows citations to be issued to property owners of places that are identified as locations where violations have taken place.

Violators to the current law and proposed expansion are subject to a $1,000 fine.

In other city business, the council also discussed a proposal to increase security at two city parks by using surveillance cameras.

The proposals for Neff and Frontier Parks were requested earlier in the year by several council members in response to several complaints of suspicious activity by park patrons.

The proposed system would cover select areas of each park would be capable of only recording for later retrieval and not monitored real-time and carries a price tag from $18,000 to $93,000.

There would also be an annual cost of up to $10,000 to maintain and service the system.

The city staff report does not mention any past incidents the proposed cameras would have been useful either deterring or apprehending the suspect in a past crime.

Vehicle bursts into flames on lawn of La Mirada home after collision

La Mirada- The driver of a car that may have been driving at a high rate of speed burst into flames after striking two parked vehicles in the 14400 block of Adelfa Dr early Christmas Eve morning.

The vehicle came to a rest on the lawn of one of the homes where

shocked neighbors came out to find the car ablaze.

Several of the area residents tried in vain to extinguish the flames that had fully engulfed the car when firefighters arrived.

The driver and a passenger both escaped injury after losing control when the driver appeared to lose control of an Audi in the Adelfa Dr curve at a speed that left a long trail of skidmarks, shearing off a wheel cleanly, and startling area residents out of bed.

One resident told La Mirada News that the impact had frightened both he and his wife saying it caused them to think there had been an explosion somewhere in their home as they slept.

No official information was immediately available.

Python found in Foster Park neighborhood of La Mirada

La Mirada- Residents in a Foster Park neighborhood found a snake resembling a python and called the Sheriff's Department in hopes they could send them the local snake charmer to help.

Deputies responded to the 12900 block of Clearwood Ave shortly after noon and found what was described as a 'Python-looking' serpent that contained and monitored until Animal Control could take custody of the guy.

La Mirada Public Safety sent out a tweet asking for the owner to call the La Mirada Sheriff's Station at 562) 902-2960.

Persons with information about the snake may also contact the Downey Animal Control 24-hour dispatch center at 562) 940-6898.

Man arrested after allegedly shooting wife in La Mirada overnight

La Mirada- A local man was arrested early today, after allegedly shooting his wife in the arm during a domestic dispute inside a La Mirada apartment near the Stater Bros shopping center.

La Mirada deputies arrived about three minutes after the 1:13 a.m. 911 call of a shooting in the 14900 block of Gagely Drive with the added danger of there being an infant in the apartment with the suspect, his gun, and a hysterical victim.

As deputies began to surround the small seven-unit apartment building, the shooting victim emerged from the couple's apartment under her own power just as dispatchers were delivering word that the suspect agreed to surrender.

The victim was escorted a block away by a deputy to paramedic crews that were waiting in a safe location near Tacuba Drive at the same moment the suspect was being handcuffed and searched by deputies.

Later Sunday morning an unconfirmed tip from a reliable source said the suspect had been released on bond around 9 a.m. from the Norwalk Station jail.

This is a breaking news story that will be updated as more details become available.

Delivery driver misjudging clearance hits light pole in La Mirada

La Mirada- No injuries were reported shortly after noon today after the driver of a delivery van clipped a light standard, felling a power line in the industrial south end of La Mirada.

The crew from La Mirada Engine Company 49 responded to the 15900 block of Canary Ave at about 12:10 p.m. to a report of a power line down.

Deputies were summoned after it was determined the incident was caused by the driver of a delivery van equipped with a large cargo box requiring a high clearance height had misjudged the distance he was from a street light pole.

The low-speed collision still snapped the pole, sending power lines toppling into the roadway.

Playground upgrades at Windermere and Gardenhill Park near completion

La Mirada- A four-year effort to upgrade and replace equipment at all of the city's six playgrounds is nearing an end as the final two projects at Windermere and Gardenhill Parks will be completed by next month.

Safety features at the two parks include the installation of a rubberized playground surface as well new walkways that are ADA compliant.

Unique playground features are sure to capture the minds of La Mirada's youngsters.

(Opinion- These are not off-the-shelf playgrounds. A lot of thought was put into what will likely become another jewel in La Mirada, at least in the eyes of a kid.)

The fencing should come down in about a week at Windemere Park, and in January at Gardenhill Park.

Work began on the $771,000 project in late September.

La Mirada Sheriff's News: LM crime is down over 10%

Violent crime is down 23%

La Mirada- A recent spike in the number overnight car burglaries, most of them left unlocked and a
rash of thefts in the southern industrial area during September and October do not take away from the big picture. The La Mirada crime rate is down 10.4% from last year and violent crime is down even more.

That is a fact La Miradans and our Sheriff's Department can be proud of because we were already the safest city of any neighboring on both sides of the Orange County line.

Of course a low crime rate doesn't matter if you come home to find a ransacked home, and fortunately, this is a seldom occurrence in our fair city.

When examining Part I crimes, a statistical standard set forth in the FBI's Uniform Crime Index incorporating data from every policing agency in the nation of violent and theft incidents La Mirada deputies have recorded 751 Part I crimes through October 31.

There were 838 reports of crime in 2017 during the same period in the city.

Reported incidents of violent crimes were down in all four categories and totaled 66 during the first ten months in 2018, a drop of 23.26% from the 86 reported on 2017.

Projected over a complete year the total would be 79, and narrowly missing the lowest violent crime rate in decades by only a five in 2010 when just 74 were recorded.

When compared to nearby cities at a rate of per 10,000 residents you can see La Mirada adds up nicely when data of violent crimes are examined.

6:30 a.m. A vehicle was reported stolen from the 13800 block of Larwin Rd.

1:10 p.m. A trespassing arrest was made in the 14600 block of Firestone Blvd. The Sheriff's Dept. has been conducting directed patrols of the freeway construction staging and surplus land areas due to a number crimes that have been associated with homeless and other upstanding citizen's in this area.

Friday, Nov 9

1:10 p.m. A felony arrest was made in the 12800 block of Biola Ave for a weapons law crime.

4:23 p.m. Deputies responding to a report of a disturbance involving an unstable person near the front of the La Mirada Albertson's.encountered something completely different when they arrived.

Norwalk Station 911 received additional reports while deputies were responding that an attempted a carjacking suspect was fighting with other persons.

Deputies found the fight had moved to near the Chuck-E-Cheese's and was still on and when deputies attempted to detain the suspect began resisting deputies, wanting to fight with them too.

Guess who came out on top on this one without even breaking a sweat?

The mini-brawl broke out when a Good Samaritan observed the suspect attempting to take a vehicle from a shopper by force, and the witness decided to intervene on behalf of the victim.

The suspect had attempted a carjacking against another victim just prior to this incident.

Several witnesses to the incident told La Mirada News the suspect frequents the area, is homeless, and creates problems regularly.

La Mirada Chili Holiday Celebration returns Dec. 1

La Mirada's signature Holiday event will be held next weekend at Splash! Regional Aquatics Park from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The event features live entertainment including local youth groups singing Christmas Carols for the crowd, free chili, hot dogs, cookies and refreshments,

Snow sledding and other activities will be available and a Tree Lighting Ceremony will be a special highlight.

Event organizers are asking those in attendance to bring non-perishable food items and/or unwrapped toys that will benefit local families in need

The City of La Mirada is asking the public to donate toys and non-perishable food items to one of its six collection points around the city through Friday, December 14 to benefit needy families in the area.

Public is invited to the Biola Tree Lighting Ceremony

The public is invited to the Biola University Chrismas Fair and Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday,

November 30 beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Vendors will be selling gifts as carolers sing holiday songs as part of the Christmas Fair on the Bell Tower Walkway from 4:30 pm to 9 p.m. Hot drinks will also be available for purchase during the Fair.

The highlight of the evening will be from 7:00 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Metzger Lawn for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony.

City Hall News: Council approves plans for next Measure I phase

La Mirada- The City Council recently approved plans for the next Measure I phase which is scheduled to begin this winter covering the largest area of the city undertaken yet.

The residential roadway rehabilitation project would cover a large section of the western end of La Mirada between Valley View and Biola Avenues, and from the Milan Creek which runs just south of Plantana Drive up to but not including Stage Road.

The city will begin accepting bids to perform the 5th phase of work which carries an estimated price tag of $8 million and covers pavement rehabilitation, as well as repair or replacing curb and gutters, sidewalks, and installation of ADA compliant curb access ramps.

Just over $5 million remains from the one-cent Measure I sales tax that has not been collected since the end of March, and the city will use other funds from gas taxes, as well as from a number of other transportation measures including SB1.

It appears the city could have two or three additional capital projects underway at the same time this winter including a major center median project on La Mirada Blvd and Rosecrans Ave, at Splash! for the new sllide, and improvements at the La Mirada Theatre sound system.

Residential areas north of Biola University, near Kling Center, as well as Green Hills and parts of Hillsborough still remain to complete the project which began in 2013.

Work on Phase 5 is scheduled to begin this winter.

On street parking eliminated on two streets

Also, at its last meeting, the city council gave its blessing to a staff request to remove the two-hour parking zone along the entire length of Trojan Way, and change the street to a 'No Stopping' zone to growth in the area.

Anticipating traffic will grow once construction on a large industrial project is completed on the west side of Trojan Way near Northam Street, the city plans on adding a second lane of travel will be in both directions of travel between Alondra Blvd and Desman Road,

Council also abolished a two-hour parking zone on a portion of northbound Valley View Ave between Gannet Street and Alondra Blvd in order to improve sight lines for vehicles entering and exiting the road.

The entire length of Valley View Ave from Imperial Hwy to Artesia Blvd will be a posted 'No Stopping' zone.

City Hall notes

The next regular session of the council on Tuesday, November 27 has been canceled and are expected to meet next on Tuesday, December 12 in the monthly Study Session as well as on regular session later on the same day. Traditionally they meet just once each in the month of December.

Staff and council discussed during its monthly study session recreation activities offered for adults. With a majority of city assets used by youth sports activities, little is left for use by adults, and the grumbling has grown louder on local social media during the calendar year.
The number of complaints about RV's and other oversized vehicles parked on city streets has fallen sharply in the year since the practice was banned. 74 citations have been issued, while education has been the preferred route to address first-time complaints. Residents can obtain up to 20 temporary permits good for a 2-hour period per year for loading and unloading of R.V. trailers etc.

Council member Andrew Sarega missed the meeting due to an illness.

Update** Man that brought gun on Biola campus had been warned earlier

La Mirada- A man who was arrested by deputies last night after driving onto the Biola University

campus with a concealed weapon was warned by a gate attendant a week earlier that he could not bring a weapon onto the campus.

The man identified by the Biola newspaper 'The Chimes' website as Ben Coffman was released later Tuesday night. The case is still active and under investigation according to the report.

Campus Safety Chief John Ojeisekhoba stated it appeared that Coffman had been living in his car, arrived at the La Mirada Blvd. shortly after 6 p.m. last night, and told the attendant he was going to go run on one of the campus fields.

The gate attendant notified Campus Safety after he recognized the man as being the one he had warned about the prohibition against weapons on the Biola University grounds, and Biola dispatchers notified the Sheriff's Department.
