Director Joe Johnston says Captain AMERICA won’t be a “jingoistic American flag-waver” in the upcoming movie: Captain America: The First Avenger.

“He’s just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don’t change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier; you have to stay who you are inside, that’s really what’s important more than your strength and everything.”

Johnston seems to be under the mistaken impression that if you’re a flag-waver you’re some right-wing conservative who mindlessly toes the line.

The truth is Captain America has always had a mind of his own, even starting a Civil War in opposition to the government enacting the Superhuman Registration Act. But while he may have disagreed with the policy, Captain America never stopped loving his country.

But all Johnston loves is money. He all but admits the reinterpretation is based on international ticket sales.

“Yeah, and it’s also the idea that this is not about America so much as it is about the spirit of doing the right thing. It’s an international cast and an international story. It’s about what makes America great and what make the rest of the world great too.”

You Are Umasou is a movie adaptation of a children’s book by Tatsuya Miyanishi, about a Tyrannosaurus that adopts a baby Ankylosaurus, who mistakes “Omae Umasou dana” (you look delicious) for its name.

Umasou certainly does look delicious, as does the rest of this heartwarming world. You Are Umasou feels like The Land Before Time meets Studio Ghibli. I dare you to watch the trailer and not smile.

Nearly 5 years after it was cancelled, Anime Unleashed will return to G4 in 2011!

G4 announced at Comic-Con that it has acquired the exclusive (American) rights to 4 new anime inspired Marvel series: Iron Man, Wolverine, X-Men, and Blade.

They won’t just have a Japanese feel to them, the series are also set in Japan. But don’t worry, the characters themselves will remain faithful. The plots were written by Warren Ellis and are actually adaptations of Marvel canon. The animation studio Madhouse has even redesigned the disgustingly pretty looking Wolverine unveiled last year after complaints from fanboys.

Reportedly, they will be subbed for G4 and possibly dubbed for DVD, which doesn’t bode well for ratings and therefore more anime in the future. Not only are Americans notoriously resistant to subtitles but those who aren’t will probably just watch fansubbed versions when they premiere in Japan October of this year.

Zombie? What zombie?

School’s out forever when zombies show up for class. But the undead aren’t the only pus heads hungry for the flesh of young girls – so are fanboys!

After all, just because these girls are about to become zombie lunch, doesn’t mean they can’t be a sexy zombie lunch. Highschool of the Dead delivers with gratuitous amounts of fanservice.

It’s not just warranted things like bouncing body parts or ripped clothes, the camera often drops well below eye level and holds there for an awkward amount of time, even in the middle of what’s supposed to be a frightening zombie attack.

While fanboys may appreciate indiscriminate T&A, those looking for some serious horror will just find it distracting.

OVERBLOWN.

All the characters have ridiculously big breasts. It’s not just the teachers and students, even zombies look like porn stars (well, except for the whole decomposing thing). Clearly artist Shouji Satou likes ‘em big but not just any kind will do. While the size may vary (slightly) from girl to girl, the shape does not. They all have torpedo tits, huge gravity-defying tits that stick straight out. As improbable as these breasts may seem in the real world, in Satou’s world they’re standard issue. But they’re not just for show. They’re practical too. When one of students has difficulty shooting he decides to use his classmate’s chest to absorb the recoil of his rifle.

HIGHSCHOOL OF THE DEAD 101

After witnessing a series of bizarre murders at his school, Takashi Komoru rushes to save his childhood friend and unrequited love Rei Miyamoto… and her boyfriend Hisashi Igou (sigh). Fortunately for him, Hisashi gets infected which forces Takashi to man up. His new take charge attitude not only impresses Rei but the rest of the students, who unanimously elect Takashi Komuro as leader of the group. His first order: save their parents! Conveniently the other students’ parents are away on business, to which they comically inquire “What are you, a manga character?”

Fourth wall jokes notwithstanding, the characters are anything but two-dimensional. The manga beautifully employs flashbacks that elevate what would otherwise be tertiary characters. And each episode ends with an ever expanding bulletin board of missing persons that illustrates the changes characters have undergone since Z-Day.

Highschool of the Dead is like a manga version of The Walking Dead comic. It’s not so much about the dead as it is the living and how they cope, which isn’t very well. Not only do they have to deal with other survivors that want their women & weapons, the group has it’s own issues (besides Takashi killing Rei’s old boyfriend).

On the outside, Kohta Hirano and Saeko Busujima couldn’t be more different, he’s a gun otaku and she’s a distinguished kendo student but they do have one thing in common. They’ve both been holding in violent urges, that is until now. But while Saeko fears what she’s becoming, Kohta fears going back to the way he used to be, a nobody. On the other hand, the group’s resident (self-proclaimed) genius Saya Takagi, desperately wants things back to normal if only so she can go back to proving her mental superiority to the people keeping her alive. Ironically, the most well-balanced member of the group is Shizuka Marikawa, the top heavy school nurse. Alone none of them would survive very long, but together they stand a chance of moving on to the next year!

Of course you realize, this means war.

In a world populated by animals, rabbits Packy and Botasky combat camel terrorists in the Middle East as part of special forces unit known as Cat Shit One.

The animation doesn’t just look great, it feels spot on. The characters’ movements are almost too realistic. Packy and Botasky move just like you’d expect rabbits walking on their hind legs to move, waddling back and forth on their big floppy feet.  The hunched over camel are equally clumsily. They walk as though on stilts and even trip on occasion.

But Cat Shit One never trivializes war.

Although bloodless, the action is frighteningly intense. Most of the fighting is done with long range weapons but sometimes these soldiers have to get their paws dirty. In order to sneak into the enemy camp, Packy slits the throat of one of the guards then dispatches the kidnappers with a silencer. War ain’t pretty, but it’s pretty damn cute!

According to the Chinese newspaper People’s Daily, “Taliban forces have taught monkeys how to use the Kalashnikov, Bren light machine gun and trench mortars. They also teach them how to identify and attack soldiers wearing U.S. military uniforms.”

The Taliban isn’t worried about accusations of animal cruelty though. In fact, they’re counting on it. “If a person who loves animals knows the monkeys may be injured in the war, they might pressure the government to force the withdrawal of western forces in Afghanistan,” said one Taliban insider.

Stars and Stripes contacted the Chinese Embassy to determine the validity of the story but a spokesman would only say that “the Chinese government is opposed to terrorism of any forms” (human or otherwise).

From the people that brought you the Scary Movie franchise comes Vampires Suck, a parody of the Twilight films.

And while there’s a lot of source material to lampoon, you don’t necessarily need to have seen it all to get high-brow jokes such as vampires like to eat Count Chocula cereal.

Vampires Suck covers the first two Twilight films but also manages to S-U-B-T-L-Y reference the third despite it not even being out yet by having an actual eclipse of the new moon during twilight (the titles of all three films).

The love triangle between Becca and her supernatural suitors is handler just as delicately with an all out war between armies of teenage girls sporting Team Edward & Team Jacob t-shirts.

But just like in the actual movies Jacob has no chance of winning the heroine’s heart and ends up being figuratively and literally declawed when he transforms into a chihuahua rather than a werewolf.

Vampires Suck is one big ‘bite me’ to Twilight fans, going as far as spoiling the plot of the final movie, Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, by having the characters see the movie then reveal to the fans waiting in line that they get married and have a vampire baby.

If you thought fishermen were upset about the BP oil spill, just wait until you see Aquaman’s response in Brightest Day #5.

He doesn’t stop at just this one wayward well. Aquaman decides to shut down ALL offshore drilling arguing that “This fuel has done more damage than good to the world. It’s perpetuated war, greed, and corruption.”

Ironically, some supervillains interrupt Aquaman’s transition from superhero to eco-terrorist.

The spill actually takes place off the Bermuda Triangle and Aquaman doesn’t say he’s “beyond perturbed” but he might as well, given how obvious the allusion is.

Wonder Woman raids Superboy's Wardrobe

In issue 600, Wonder Woman faces her most tyrannical opponent yet – the fashion police!

A change in the time stream has the Amazon Princess growing up in America instead of Paradise Island, yet looking less American than ever.

“The original costume was the American flag brought to life,” explains artist Jim Lee. “This one is a little more universal.”

In truth, the only thing universal about it is the criticism. Releasing this anti-American Wonder Woman on the week of 4th of July is bad enough but it’s such an obvious ripoff of Superboy’s old costume (leather jacket, red gloves, gold boot straps). She’s even been de-powered like Superboy was in his early days, and likewise is “working her way up to her full set of powers” says writer J. Michael Straczynski.

When I first saw this Pepcid Complete commercial parodying a fast food restaurant, I immediately scoured the internet to find out who was the adorable actress playing Debra the cashier. Everything about her exudes cuteness: her eyes, her voice, even the little gap between her teeth.

Unfortunately, all I found was a lot of other people desperately searching for her as well. Eventually the commercial stopped airing and I stopped searching. But after recently seeing the commercial again, I gave it another go and found it had been upload on Youtube along with a name to the face. “Debra” is actual Shea Prueger, a professional model and you know what that means – lots more Shea to look at!
