From it's spacious loft in a historic brewery in the Berlin Friedrichshain neighborhood, artist-run project space 'Kunstraum Richard Sorge' reaches a broad and often young international audience, but adventurous discerning art lovers as well.
Like the spy Richard Sorge, the exhibition project independently works from a marginal, yet cosmopolitan position to ultimately save the world.
Kunstraum Richard Sorge regularly organizes the international Berlin art show "Strich & Faden", the La Crèche event (with Playground Berlin) and other projects.

Musikalische Intervention: Beide Messies

Griffin Galerie + Bar- Invalidenstrasse 151 - 10115 Berlin

"Soapbox" uses sound and video to explore ideas of reality and its corruption through learned information and experience. The soundtrack and installation provide a glimpse of an alternate dimension, where the dissonance and discord hidden beneath the surface of ordinary life is brought to the foreground.

Clemence de la Tour du Pin
"What owes the space to the silence? Still not sure" 2011
(video projection, neon light and writing)

Clemence de La Tour du Pin is a French artist currently working in Berlin. Her performative installations "become messy monuments to their own creative process," capturing elements of the everyday, with found materials and familiar themes recurring throughout the spaces she manipulates.

At the midpoint of the Mica Moca project at this location, Clemence de la Tour du Pin presents an animation which refers to the ephemeral nature of such art projects. With Berlin changing and getting more commercially developed, she questions whether the possibilities it offers to artists will still be available in the future.

J.Jackie Baier - Der Stand der Dinge (slide-installation, triptych)

Noted photographer and documentary filmmaker J.Jackie Baier presents us with a deeply personal and unglamorized view of Berlin's sexual underground. Baier portrays in a non-voyeuristic way the lives of transsexual prostitutes, drag queens and other "misfits".

A collaboration art installation by James Bullough & Karl Addison for Playground Berlin Weekend at Mica Moca. An international selection of artists has been invited to conceive site specific work for the Mica Moca building, a former safe factory in the working class district Berlin Wedding.

James’s work explores the balance between contrasting elements. Abstract graffiti inspired backgrounds live with color and texture are met with intensely realistic images. Highly rendered portraits float atop layers of ambient space and geometric forms. Contemporary street art techniques and materials collide with those of the realist oil painters James admires.

Addison’s purpose (it seems) is three-fold: to amuse us the first time we discover one of his pieces, to draw us in—inviting us to take a closer look, and to make us stop and see every minute detail—and in a sense, to stop and see him.

For the "von und zu" performance which Paul Polaris presented at Kunstverein Zurich she worked with objects covered in wood-, marble,- and steel-like material and experimented with their sounds and meaning. She has now developed this idea into a cooperation with the two musicians Tobias von Glenck & Martin Lorenz and their project Trabant Echo. With e-bass and turntables they improvise on classical music samples, "imitating" acoustic instruments and thereby generate new sounds. Jointly the three artists explore their aim to work on fragile moments, creating a dense carpet of sounds, movements and images.

Brazilian-born André Wakko is an artist based in Berlin who specializes in interactive art, and generative art and sound installations. He's also internationally active as an innovative electronic music producer, musician and dj.

For the Playground Berlin Weekend at Mica Moca, on July17, 2011, André Wakko presented a special performance of Sonematik, his audio visual concert which integrates new ways of generating audio-visual compositions in real time. The performance leverages a massive screen projection surface as a canvas for exploring dense monochromatic meshes and emergent patterns.

Location:
Berlin, Germany

SUNDAY 16.00 to 24.00

CONCEPT:
An international selection of artists has been invited to conceive site specific work for the Mica Moca building, a former safe factory in the Berlin Wedding. From subtle architectonic interventions, to participatory performances, to installations made from found materials to projections; many of the invited artists have ample experience creating informal ephemeral installations for Berlin's much quoted „temporary spaces“ - the city's special post-Wall situation of limitless derelict space, small means, and a lack of professional art structures has created the setting for what has become an art historic niche for independent artists.

PLAYGROUND BERLIN:

Established in 2009, Playground Berlin is an international collective dedicated to independent art collaboration and presentation. Blurring generational, national, cultural and sexual boundaries, Playground Berlin's projects offer a delirious convergence of visual art, music, mixed media installations and performances.

MICA MOCA:

MicaMoca project Berlin is an an experiment in mixing genres, instigating culture clash and challenging the imagination. An old safe factory on Lindowerstrasse 22, Berlin is the setting until the end of September. Mica Moca's fluid program of cultural events and projects combines a wide array of disciplines.

Gallery Weekend at LA54 - May 28th 2011

In “a Berlin torn between its anti-market roots and the increasing dominance of commercial galleries, between general gentrification and preserving pockets of its Bohemian spirit” we can still find adventurous art projects like those taking place at the atmospheric environment of the Old Brewery at Landsberger Allee 54 in Friedrichshain. For how long is unclear; after having been let down by the Senat of Berlin in its quest for recognition as an artist’s house, the site is currently the object of the fantasies of possible new investors.

Against all odds, and fully self-supporting, the art spaces G11, 91 MQ, Marzia Frozen, KunstKliniKum and Kunstraum Richard Sorge continue to present cutting edge exhibitions that would not be possible in this way in any other place in Berlin.

The weekend of May 28th and 29th, starting at 3 pm daily, the curators invite you to a joint weekend of exhibitions, art events and receptions. The weekend coincides with the “Artpartment” Festival organized by the artist located in the Old Brewery, offering special installations, open studios, performances and live music throughout the building.

Participants:: G11 Galerie, 91 mQ Art Project Space, Marzia Frozen Cont. Art, KunstKliniKum, Kunstraum Richard Sorge

G11 Galerie

Founded in the internationally recognised Baumwollspinnerei Leipzig, and originating from very diverse cultural backgrounds, the G11 Galerie aims to cross boundaries and find common ground. They are dedicated to regularly exhibiting international artists, gallery exchange initiatives, organizing artistic salons, aiming through these activities to further an open discourse beyond the boundaries of art. G11 Galerie's current exhibition of paintings by Aya Onodera perfectly exemplifies these ideals. 0n the evening of May 28th G11 presents a Japanese Salon.

http://www.g11-galerie-berlin.de/

91 mQ

91mQ believes in art as a line of thought that is vital to our understanding of the development of the world in which we live. Its initiators wish to encourage a dialogue between a variety of people be they artists filmmakers, video artists, writers or critics. 91mQ exhibits a wide variety of work from across Europe, in addition to work from the local community and gives marginalized practices (film, video, performance) equal status with the visual arts. May 28th, from 7.30 pm, 91 mQ invites to the opening reception of "Bases” by Alessandro Cannistrà; a site specific project composed of paintings, video installation, and photography which “celebrates the dualistic resonance of the human within nature and conversely of the given nature of humanity.”

http://www.91mq.org/

KunstKliniKum

Galerie KunstKliniKum is located on the 2nd floor of the Old Brewery in Berlin Friedrichshain. Since early 2011 it presents work by artists like Martin Bech-Ravn, Anne Sophie Lorange, Pascal Piron, Javier Ramirex and Sven Stuckensmidt. Until the end of May, KunstKliniKum presents the first Berlin solo show of Javier Ramirex, "Ultra-Super Painting," featuring the Berlin-based Colombian artist's recent day-glo colored paintings and sculptures that combine the vibrant colors of the Latin painting tradition with the hard-edged angular East German influences of the Old Brewery's urban surroundings.

http://www.kunstklinikum.com/

Marzia Frozen Contemporary Art

In the Old Brewery's spacious 3rd floor hall overlooking Berlin Friedrichshain, Marzia Frozen Contemporary Art has been presenting group shows by international artists since 2009. It's current apocalyptically themed “Post + Humans” exhibition features paintings, sculptures, photographs, performance art and videos by Jari Di Giampietro, Lily Lesniak, Riccardo Mayr, Olivia Hallstein, Javier Ramirex, Ari Iimatainen, Fabrizio Sanna, Alia Spizzichino and Robekkah Ritchie.

http://www.marziafrozen.com/

Kunstraum Richard Sorge

The art space is named after the communist spy (Ian Fleming's model for James Bond) that reputedly saved the Western world from Nazism. From its bountiful and lovingly renovated space it reaches a young and international audience, but adventurous discerning art lovers as well. Its well researched curatorial projects focus on craftism, club/vj/kinetic art, GLBTQ art and subcultures. Like its namesake, the initiative independently works from a marginal, yet cosmopolitan position to ultimately save the world. In the commemoration month of May KRS presents a war mural installation by noted conceptual artist jens Kloppmann.

May 8-28th 2011
Opening: May 5th 2011, 7 pm

In May 2011 Kunstraum Richard Sorge presents Jens Kloppmann's "slachten". Opening on the historically significant date of May 8th, the day of German capitulation in WWII, the solo exhibition by the noted Berlin-based conceptual artist thematizes war.

The main piece of "slachten" will be a large mural work made out of fretwork. Hundreds of painstakingly hand cut figures will be installed by the artist, amounting to a huge ornamental "war painting". Liberally using and recombining familiar silhouettes and vignetters from our collective memory, art history, and war reportage, Kloppmann depicts a broad panorama of war in all its stages: attack, counter attack, displacement.

A selection from Kloppmann's Bulllet Boulevard series will also be on view; gypsum replicas of war damages taken from facades of the cityscape of Berlin.

WAREHOUSE #05 - The Giants of Misfits

A special electronica and art event on March 26th 2011 from 10 pm - late at zmf, Brunnenstrasse 10, Berlin-Mitte.

J.Jackie Baier - "Weinender Fisch", 2010, C-Print (detail)

"Those works created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses - where the worries of competition, acclaim and social promotion do not interfere - are, because of these very facts, more precious than the productions of professionals. After a certain familiarity with these flourishings of an exalted feverishness, lived so fully and so intensely by their authors, we cannot avoid the feeling that in relation to these works, cultural art in its entirety appears to be the game of a futile society, a fallacious parade."

Jean Dubuffet

The second curatorial and artistic cooperation between art space Kunstraum Richard Sorge and Warehouse on March 26th at zmf will feature art by Gert-Jan Akerboom, J.Jackie Baier, Ono Ludwig, Clemence de La Tour du Pin/Leandro Quintero and Tulip Enterprises. In an imaginatively designed and lighted multimedia presentation, the artists interact with the atmospheric surroundings of the zmf art space and club, one of the last untouched subcultural spaces of Berlin-Mitte.

Photographer/filmmaker J.Jackie Baier shall conduct a special live portrait session, inviting the audience to sit. The resulting portraits will be projected in the course of the evening. Baier will also present her photographic prints, a slideshow and projections.

Clemence de La Tour du Pin will present samples from her ongoing black drawing series and will execute a large copy art billboard outside on the Brunnenstrasse 10. The centerpiece of her presentation is a collaborative work with the London based photographer Leandro Quintero.

Gert-Jan Akerboom will show brand new silk screen prints and will add another layer to the zmf's urban art covered walls with wheat paste pieces specially produced for this occasion.

Last but not least, Ono Ludwig's enigmatic sexually charged black & white analog photographs are presented in an informal installation.

All presented art pieces can be purchased during the evening.

Feb. 26th 2011, from 10 pm the art of Hiroki Otsuka (image), Musk Ming & Amit Elan is on display in an art presentation on a queer and Asian theme curated by Kunstraum Richard Sorge at Warehouse, the art & music extravaganza organized by Maria Psycho and Thomas Götz von Aust at zmf club/art space.

Club culture and art may not be such strange bedfellows after all. A whole tradition of artists seeking the proximity to another, cooler, (sub) culture can be invoked. Kunstraum Richard Sorge will use the gallery space of zmf to showcase the works of Otsuka, Elan and Ming (gallery doors open at 10 pm). In deliberate innocence, Warehouse celebrates the happy convergence of gender confusion, club culture and art.

DJs: Helga P, Steve Morell, Herr von Wildsau, Mary Velo, Aviv Netter, Andreas Schwarz.
Live: Plastic Poney, Musk Ming.

Urban photography @ Kunstraum Richard Sorge, Landsberger Allee 54, 10249 Berlin:

Virginia Garfunkel: Moloch & Abenteuerspielplatz

Vernissage: 26. November, 19 U.
Ausstellung: 27. November, 13 - 19 U.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In her solo exhibition Moloch & Abenteuerspielplatz, Virginia Garfunkel presents 13 photographs on the theme of urbanity.

The big city represents opportunity and risk simultaneously: The realm of dreams and of neurosis; it can be a place to hide or a place to represent oneself, a playground or a devouring monster..

Virginia Garfunkel depicts the complicated structure of urbanity, the role of the city's inhabitants, thematizing urban density, saturation and decay, the city's construction and destruction.

View all of Herman's paintings at his Flickr pages, much of it is inspired by the trash mail he receives each day.

Works by Versus Collective (Peru) and J.Jackie Baier (Germany) at the Streeple exhibition at Kunstraum Richard Sorge, Berlin, October 2010.

Feat. J.Jackie Baier, Alex Da Corte, Slava Mogutin, Ari Versluis & Ellie Uyttenbroek / Exactitudes, Versus Collective: Gihan Tubbeh, Musuk Nolte, Renzo Giraldo.

Kunstraum Richard Sorge is the setting for a photography exhibition that maps the complex area between empathy and exploitation, identification and voyeurism.

According to the Urban Dictionary, “streeple” denominates street people. The show’s photographers view their subjects as protagonists, not models; they are chosen and documented for what they are, and not brought to play any kind of role. Photographed (or casted) in the streets, they (and we, the viewers) are made aware of their specialness.

Placed at the center of attention, the protagonists are drawn into a dialog with the photographer based on the gradual development of trust. At best, this process leads to empowerment: “claiming the right to a face,” as photographer J.Jackie Baier puts it, of those living “on the fringes of society,” and beyond.

Using mise-en-scène to make the real more truthful, the photographers show that there is posing involved in every photo, no matter how “straight-up”.

Exhibition: Mehdi-Georges Lahlou - Les Talons d'Allah

Born of a Christian mother and Muslim father, Brussels-based French-Moroccan artist Mehdi-Georges Lahlou learned early on the value of relativism. The theme of crossing boundaries set by culture, religion and gender is present in all of his installations and performances. While his works appears at first sight political, for instance tackling Orientalism and gender issues in Islam, it is important to the artist that it be viewed first and foremost as an open, poetic autobiographical gesture to be judged on art's own terms.

The artist draws not only on the history of performance and installation-art, but also incorporates references to Belgian Surrealism in his works. In Lahlou's art we find humor, poetics, guts, dedication, refined artistic intuition, personal risk taking and social relevance.

For his one-man show at Kunstraum Richard Sorge, in Berlin, Mehdi-Georges Lahlou will present his performance/installation/restaurant "Dar_Koom" and the large scale installation "Cocktail, Self-portrait in Society" and more recent works.

Artist's Statement:
"My work is, for a great part, autobiographical. I am one of the major subjects of my own work, I'm at the crossroads of two cultures, an western one coming from my Spanish mother and a Muslim one from my father, living in Morocco. My work also aims at finding impossible connections between the two, trying to position myself, to acquire certain knowledge, to create new nostalgias - if that's possible. So clearly, I'm using symbols that are dear to me, which were given to me, sometimes slightly imposed on me, but I was never forced to do anything. You cannot force someone in Islam, although you might want to sometimes. The Muslim aesthetic is something which really strikes me, which I chose and I try to mix with the Western one. This is how you really get to see how the West and the East co-exist."

Kunstraum Richard Sorge, Landsberger Allee 54, 10249 Berlin.
Exhibition duration: Sept. 17th - Oct. 10th 2010, Wednesday - Saturday, 2 - 6 pm.

Opening reception: Sept. 16th, 7 pm.
Closing reception: Oct. 10th , 7 pm.

Performances:
Special performance during the opening reception at Sept.16th.
"Dar_Koom" one-on-one performances (10 min. each) on Sept.17 th & 18 th from 3 - 6 pm.

Taking the mass-produced color woodblock prints of late period Ukiyo-e master and forerunner of Manga Utagawa Kuniyoshi as his vantage point, Otsuka will create an original full-length manga (Japanese style comic book), often working onsite visible to visitors.
In addition, Otsuka lends his talents to an array of related activities, including illustration workshops for the general public and New York City high school students, devising and judging an international manga competition, blogging about his work and experience at Japan Society, and creating original Kuniyoshi-inspired artwork to be made available to the public.

Otsuka's yet-to-be titled original manga, which begins production on the opening of Graphic Heroes Magic Monsters, centers on a teenager who comes to Japan Society's exhibition as part of a school group. The student literally gets drawn into the artwork as a Kuniyoshi-inspired warrior and is called on to save New York City from the multitude of monsters marauding throughout Kuniyoshi's prints. A new episode of Otsuka's manga will be made available weekly online. Visitors to Japan Society Gallery will have the opportunity to observe Otsuka working onsite on Friday evenings 5-9, and Saturdays and Sundays 11 am-5 pm.

Like other masters of the school of Ukiyo-e printmaking ("Pictures of the Floating World"), Kuniyoshi pursued the themes of landscape, kabuki theater, and beautiful women. He was unique, however, in his mastery of lesser known subjects: action-packed tales drawn from the history, religion, folklore, and myths of Japan, China, and other Asian countries; comic "crazy pictures" often featuring animals impersonating humans; and exotic experiments with foreign subject-matter and European techniques of visual representation.

"Kuniyoshi's work can be seen as foreshadowing the visual storytelling of contemporary manga, anime, and computer and video games," says Joe Earle, Director of Japan Society Gallery and organizer of the exhibition. "Like a number of the top creators in these genres of today, he was an eccentric who specialized in comic figures and action scenes sold in vast numbers at low prices to an insatiable and visually sophisticated audience."

About Hiroki Otsuka: A professional comic book illustrator since 1994, Brooklyn based Japanese artist/illustrator honed his craft drafting and inking comic book cells for a variety of projects, and illustrated for a number of major Japanese publications through 2004. "I grew up reading manga like all youngsters in Japan, although I was completely obsessed with submerging myself in their realm of imagination," says Otsuka. "Since then, I have devoted a great deal of time studying manga. Through drawing manga, I like to open doors for readers to share my imaginative world. I use personal experiences, or experiences and stories from my friends to inspire my work. I create drawings, paintings, and manga whose underlying themes are entertaining and convey something of the essence of living freely, easily and vividly."

In 2005, Otsuka's focus shifted from graphic to fine arts, working predominantly with traditional sumi ink used in Japanese calligraphy. Otsuka's debut solo show at Brooklyn's Stay Gold Gallery in 2005 prompted The New Yorker to write that his works "push the populist youth quotient through the roof." Since then, his work has appeared in galleries throughout the United States and Japan, and has been featured in international art fairs in New York, Tokyo and Basel, Switzerland. He's been exhibited at major art institutions such as The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (Nothing Moments, 2007) and in academic settings such as Pittsburgh University Art Gallery (Making Faces: Depiction of Women in Japan from Edo to Today, 2009). In 2007, Otsuka was featured in Japan Society’s centennial exhibition Making a Home, curated by Eric C. Shiner, that highlighted 33 Japanese contemporary artists living and working in New York. Berlin's Kunstraum Richard Sorge held a major exhibition of Otsuka's paintings and murals in 2009 entitled Everything to More. Most recently, Otsuka provided the integrated illustrations for choreographer Jeremy Wade's critically acclaimed multimedia dance there is no end to more, a Japan Society commission which had its world premiere in New York in December 2009.

Discussing his process, Otsuka says, "I always begin by drawing the pictures on a sketchbook just using a black pen, which is a basic manga technique. As simple as this sounds, so much information can be conveyed with just one line. The spontaneity of lines is my identity. It shows how I have been inspired and mirrors my state of mind and energy flow. Lines are the most significant aspect of my works, even more important than what I draw."

"Think of baby animals with spooky, giant eyes and ghosts who talk about their bodily functions. Veith Michel’s three-paneled video features plenty of these, including beautiful line drawings by the manga illustrator Hiroki Otsuka, as well as a barrage of predictable media images."

Everything to More - Drawings & Murals by Hiroki Otsuka

Everything to More - drawings and murals by Hiroki Otsuka - November 28, 2009 - January 16, 2010

Kunstraum Richard Sorge presents "Everything to More," New York based Japanese artist Hiroki Otsuka's first solo show in Europe featuring drawings and murals.

The show's title alludes to Otsuka's cooperation with Berlin based choreographer Jeremy Wade, there is no end to more, a critical multi-medial exploration of "Kawaii" (cuteness) that takes place from 25 - 27 November at the renowned Berlin Hebbel am Ufer theatre. One day later, November 28, the murals and drawings of Otsuka's one-man show at Kunstraum Richard Sorge will be unveiled. The exhibition extends the themes of Kawaii, saturation and alienation into the realm of shifting and dark sexuality.

In his drawings and paintings, Otsuka makes an elegant transition from erotic Manga to disturbing fine art, applying intriguing gender twists to his uninhibited explorations of sexuality. His works "delve into our own experiences of the carnal; whether straight, gay, trans-gendered or otherwise, these works speak to the diversity of sexuality," curator and expert for Japanese modern art Eric C. Shiner has written. Otsuka leads us into a dreamlike, cross-sexual world of multidirectional unlabeled sensuality.

The artist has worked for the Takashi Murakami studio and has exhibited with such noted artists as Yoko Ono and Yasunao Tone. He has recently executed large scale murals for the Japan Society (NY) and exhibited at MOCA LA. This fall, Otsuka's work can be viewed at the Pittsburgh University Art Gallery; next year it will be on view at the Warhol Museum.

....................................................................................................................................
GERMAN TRANSLATION:

November Hiroki Otsukas erste Einzelausstellung in Europa, "Everything To More" im Kunstraum Richard Sorge eröffnet.

Ausstellungsort: Kunstraum Richard Sorge, Alte Brauerei, Landsberger Allee 54, Berlin Friedrichshain
Ausstellungsdauer: 28 Nov. - 22 Dez. 2009

Verlängert: noch von 2-16 Janurar, nur nach Vereinbarung.

Check us out in Sleekmag!

The highly collectible October 2009 issue of Sleekmag on Berlin People and Berlin Places is a perfect guide to the new Berlin "borderground" where bohemia, beauty and brains collide in an orgy of hedonism and totally unjustified optimism.

An extensive report in the print edition of the luxurious magazine recommends Kunstraum Richard Sorge and pictures the Dream Watching show by Gert-Jan Akerboom.

"Berlin People" is quite a good piece capturing (and exemplifying?) the glamorous and self-gratulatory nature of Berlin's "expat art scene" (the phrase seems to always mean just the UK/US expats though). It is just so cool not to speak German..

Preview the mag

Prague based art internet-tv station Articok.tv has published a feature on the Dream Watching exhibition by Ivan Svoboda; an interview with Dutch artist Gert-Jan Akerboom, with impressions of his current exhibition of murals and drawings at Berlin art space "Kunstraum Richard Sorge".

Articok.tv is an independent internet HD television at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU) that publishes news from contemporary Middle European art scene. In 2006 an archive was founded of contributions from exhibition openings, interviews with artists, curators, and recordings from workshops, competitions or lectures. The youngest section of video art domain represents the biggest archive of Czech-Slovak audiovisual scene.
This project has been developed within a mutual cooperation of professional international teams and partners of other art schools that monitor their local art scenes and contribute so to the closer cooperation within Middle and Eastern Europe: Prague, Brno, Ústí nad Labem, Pilsen, Bratislava, Košice, Budapest, and Berlin.
The project supports and enhances stimulating communication among artists and focuses on the youngest artists. In a broader conceptual attitude, it defines itself against content standards of Czech televisions and creates an alternative to omnipresent mainstream.
