The other day I stumbled upon a website listing the best Christmas sites. I had to share it with you, my fellow Christmas Junkie. Dating For Guys: Writing a Personal Ad-What Not to Do

Find dates more efficiently by cutting out unnecessary junk when writing your dating profile. Read up on these "Dont's" about what not to do or write in your personal ad. These pointers will add value to your online dating endeavors and perhaps even be directly responsible for getting you a date this Valentine's Day!

Ladies, these dating profile tips will enhance your dating experience also.

1. Don't be negative.

Instead of saying, "Not looking to play games," say, "Looking to meet someone for serious commitment." Accentuate the positive of what you are looking for; don't even mention the negative aspect.
Similarly, instead of saying you're "not looking to exchange endless emails", say you are "seriously ready to meet someone and would like only a brief email exchange leading to an offline meeting as soon as possible."

You get the idea. Negativity is a turn-off. Turn all of your "nots" into "wants," and be specific. Your personal ad will make you sound that much better.

2. Don't post certain pictures.

That picture of you with another woman? Women will wonder if the woman in the picture is the kind of woman you are looking for in someone else. If the woman in the picture is a relative, then state that. Otherwise, just post pictures of yourself and your (male) buddies.
And if you're posting on Craigslist in the "Men Seeking Women" section, then keep it relevant to that category. Don't post any pictures you wouldn't want your mother to see. And don't bother posting a picture that's not of you, if just to get our attention.

3. Don't ignore the rules of grammar, spelling, style, and syntax.

"Looking for a women." Assuming you are only looking for one woman, the correct spelling is wom-a-n, not wom-e-n.
Similarly, I've seen this headline, "Seeking for a women." Correct: "Seeking a Woman."
Don't write your dating profile with the CAPS LOCK on. CAPS = shouting, and nobody wants to be shouted at.
Going back to spelling, before posting your dating profile, write your content in a word document, and use the spell-check feature to fix any spelling errors.

4. Don't address all of us.

Don't say, "Hey Ladies", or we will think you are looking to date more than one of us at a time. You basically sound like a player. Ladies, beware.

5. Don't use/overuse LOLs, emoticons, and other chat slang.

Beauty Tips for Winter Skin

Preparing your skin for the cooler months to come is vital if you are in your 30s and beyond. It never hurts to start taking good care of your skin early, so for those in your 20s, this is a must-read. With the cooler weather comes dry skin. In addition, some of us will experience flakiness in the t-zone area. Prevention is key, and keeping your skin extra moist and hydrated this holiday season will enhance those wonderful fall and holiday makeup colors. Continue reading to learn about an effective skincare regimen to combat the windy, cold weather and indoor heat-related dryness heading your way.

Water. Enough cannot be said about this vital nutrient. Drink water, lots of it, throughout the day. Your skin and everything beneath it depends on proper hydration. This is the first and foremost top "beauty" tip.
Exercise and eat right. These two go hand in hand. Apply all year!
You want to try and control dull skin buildup on the surface which can block your pores. One of the best ways to manage this is by washing your face twice daily with a mildly exfoliating cream-based cleanser. Get one that contains a citrus extract for a refreshing feel.
The use of toners should sometimes be restricted to the summer months, depending on how sensitive your skin is, as the wrong kind of toner (especially alcohol-based) could further dry your skin and irritate it, causing incessant flakiness. An aloe vera-based toner is safe and effective to use in the harsher fall and winter months. Its soothing properties will calm your irritated skin and remove the day's debris and help keep pores unclogged. To combat even drier and red skin, consider a chamomile toner.
Don't forget your eyes! Extremely dry eyes are not to be neglected; practice continuous and consistent use of the right kind of eye cream. A cream with a blend of antioxidant and vegetable oils as well as vitamins A and E is a remarkable combination to safely treat the eye area. Apply it around your lips too! For extremely sensitive skin around the eyes, check out a chamomile eye cream.
Morning and evening moisturizers and creams should not be the same. Your morning moisturizer should always contain an SPF of at least 15. The sun's rays are also strong in the colder months, so don't let Mother Nature fool you. Protect your skin from harsh particles in the air with a moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid; it will lock your natural moisture inside.
At night, your skin gets to work repairing itself as you are sleeping. You can greatly assist this process by applying a cream designed for exactly this scenario. Protein, collagen, vitamin A...these are all vital ingredients to help your skin stay youthful and supple. Don't go to bed without gently cleansing your skin and applying a protein-based night cream.
You can't forget the rest of your body which is just as prone to dry skin and flaking as your face. Rich olive oil is essential in your diet and also happens to be a fantastic moisturizing agent. Douse your body in an olive oil-based body moisturizer and you now have a complete fall/winter skincare regimen! Bye bye to dry and dull skin.

Some companies may cater to only 50+ women or men or both; others to young singles or to working professionals. For perhaps this reason alone, singles really don't have that many options. Another reason is that there are only a select few dedicated singles travel companies that offer vacations over the holiday season.

The Holidays and Dangerous Relationships

The holidays are a wonderful time of year but as singles, we sometimes suffer when bombarded with messages that we should be with someone, anyone. Sometimes, though, it is good to be single. The holidays are a stressful time of year and can make single people do things they wouldn't normally do during the rest of the year; like stay, re-enter or enter into dangerous relationships with narcissists or sociopaths. These types of relationships are defined by abuse - physical and/or verbal/emotional. A relationship where emotional/verbal abuse takes place is just as damaging to a person's psyche and can leave a victim scarred forever if they don't seek help.

Let's say you meet a guy (or girl) that sets your emotions in a whirl. You've never felt better or more elated. You feel that you are really connecting with this person, that he/she understands you and your needs so well. You start dating and you notice a few "off" things about the person but you dismiss it. The holidays are approaching, and you don't want to be alone.

As the relationship progresses, you start to feel down about yourself. You no longer feel like that happy person that can walk on clouds. When did this happen? Something has changed but you just can't place your finger on what that is. The guy or girl who you're dating hasn't been treating you the same way. You notice they are moodier and more unpredictable. You start to uncover lies and feel confusion when around them, especially when trying to talk to them.

Your confidence and self-esteem are down-spiraling. You don't feel like yourself. The things they say to you are appalling but somehow you feel numb and can't respond in the appropriate way. Or you're so very tired of constantly fighting this person off, telling them their words and actions are inappropriate.

This scenario is common unfortunately. It means you are in an abusive relationship and should terminate it as well as end contact with the person. No matter how much you feel alone during the holidays, whether it's Christmas, New Year's, the Fourth of July, etc., please be careful about people you have only just met and with whom you suddenly feel a profound connection.

Predators, as these abusers are sometimes called (there are different types of abusers), are lurking on the internet as well as anywhere, really. However, they are primarily found there because it's so easy to target a victim due to up-front disclosure of many factors: age, location, favorite things, wants and desires, etc. Predators have the innate ability to act like a chameleon, portraying themselves as someone his target is looking for. Eventually, they will seek to rob you of your emotional identity and assume all of your wonderful traits and qualities, leaving you in a state.

I have since given up online dating. If you choose to date online, do take super precaution though I don't know how since predators are so keenly adept in manipulation techniques that will leave you feeling like you were hypnotized.

Remember, if it's too good to be true, it's probably a big lie. And also, remember that it is okay to be alone during the holidays if only for your safety and emotional/mental/physical well-being.

May I suggest one route to meeting quality people? Volunteer in your community. Only genuinely good people are unselfish enough to volunteer their time. And if you're too busy to meet new people offline, in the real world, then something is wrong in your life. Look at what your priorities are and work to fix your situation.

Valentine's Day: Singles Need Not Be Sad

I don't have much to say about this holiday that, similar to Christmas, makes some singles want to hide. It is yet another exploited holiday for the benefit of struggling businesses. So, if you can get out there and support your restaurant or local drug store to buy some chocolate, then please do.

I spent the early part of the day digging my car out of the snow. I was so happy to finally be able to drive around. Then, I went shopping, had lunch, came home and I've been watching classic films ever since.

In the words of Thoreau; "Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder..."

New Year's Eve and Being Single: How I Spent this Dreadful Holiday

I was contemplating just staying home like I am sure many singles thought to do and maybe did do. My aunt usually hosts a New Year's Eve dinner at her house and while I had no problem going there when I was in my 20s, once I hit my 30s though, I no longer "allowed" myself to go and stay past midnight.

Once my cousin got married and now her brother (my younger cousin) got married last year, I knew I would feel terribly out of place at my aunt's house. I would have went for a little while and then pretended to go to a party (please don't say it's pathetic!), but then I actually had a real party to go to which I did attend.

Anyway, I think I did that once a few years ago, pretending I had a party to go to just so my family wouldn't feel bad for me, and I wouldn't feel akward and depressed. I actually did go out but to dinner with a friend. It was so cold that year, and the restaurant rushed us that we found ourselves outside by 10:00 PM! It was so freaking cold that I couldn't stand it. My friend and I thought about hitting a bar but we both hated crowds. Eventually, we both headed to our respective warm apartments and called it an early night. It was really fine with me. Yes, I was depressed about being alone but I didn't mind being home on my couch, warm and watching tv.

This year (2009-2010), I spent the holiday at a friend of a friend's family party. They rented out a restaurant with another family (we had the back room) and shared the band. I ate home-cooked food as the family cooked all the delicious food. I didn't have to travel far, as it was only a few neighborhoods away; although my car was starting to break down (I got stuck the next day but that's another story). There wasn't a bar so the only drinks we had were the ones we could make ourselves (rum/coke, wine, etc) with the liquor the family brought. The best part was that I only spent $20. Ok, that wasn't the best part. The best part was that I was glad to be out of the house even though I hated dressing for the occasion as nothing fit me (gained a bit of weight). I was with my friends and didn't mind that the restaurant was haunted. Yes, dear readers, it was!

My aunt was disappointed that I didn't come. At first I was planning to stop by and say hello but it was simply easier to travel to and stay in one place.

I tried to at least get buzzed but it just didn't work out that way. Time flew by at a surprisingly quick pace and midnight hit before we knew it. All around, it wasn't too bad. A little pretending also helped get me through another single New Year's Eve. I recommend going somewhere even if it's just for a couple of hours and you end up being home before midnight. So what, you know? At least you got out! What a dreadful holiday all around!

Recuperating from the Holidays: For Singles

Some singles will find they need to recuperate from the holidays as much as their married-with-children counterparts. For some singles, it's stressful being around the family; or simply "being single" is enough to make one want to stay in bed for the duration of the season. The feeling of being single is never felt more apparent than during this time of year. One way to recover is by taking the time to reflect on your New Year's resolutions.

The beginning of a new year is a wonderful time to begin anew. Give yourself a clean slate. Plan for your future or plan a trip in the nearer future. Mobilize your resolutions into a concrete plan of action that is realistically doable. Once you have this plan, the holidays will be long behind you as you begin to work toward your goals.

In a further effort to disconnect from another doldrum holiday season, singles should treat themselves to some after-holiday shopping sales. There's nothing like getting that sweater you've been eyeing that is now 50% off or more.

If you put up any decorations, it's best to take them down now (if you haven't already done so). Give your place a decent cleaning also, and you will feel new and refreshed at the sight of your clean and decluttered apartment or house.  Maintaining a clean and decluttered space gives you energy and a clearer mind.

As if the holidays weren't hard enough, we already have to contend with the next holiday before we could barely catch our breath! Yes, I'm talking about Valentine's Day, another dreaded anti-singles holiday. Have you noticed the stores already stocking their shelves with candy and chocolate hearts?  My goodness, we just barely finished with Christmas and New Year's!

Just don't even go down the aisles of Valentine's merchandise. Avoid them altogether. Recognize your situation and improve on it as best as you can. The best advice for us all is to take good care of ourselves. Get out there and socialize, focus on your resolutions and goals, and maintain an open mind and heart.

Self-Love is the Best Christmas Gift

For another holiday season, I will celebrate it single. Well, celebrate might be a strong word. But at least I can rest assured that I have made significant progress this year what with getting an ex out of my system. I will be alone but I will not be as miserable as last year. Self-love is important, and most of us know that it goes a long way as long as it doesn't get to the point of unhealthy self-love which is actually a form of self-loathing. But that's really another topic.

As in my last post on giving the gift of self-love for Christmas which I wrote earlier this year, now is the time to reflect and look inwards into your soul. Find out what is missing or what is making you unhappy, and create a realistic and attainable plan to work it all out to the best of your ability.

As singles, we no doubt feel the tremendous pressure at this time of year. It's as if celebrations are solely meant for couples and families. Actually, even childless couples might feel the sting a little. There's really nothing we can do about it. Let these short (but they feel so long) days between Christmas and New Year's pass with you reflecting on your positive accomplishments this year as well as planning into next year. Cry, watch movies, drink (a little), eat (a little!), get together with other single friends, especially on New Year's, go to supportive chat forums, and find other positive ways to cope. And just remember that in today's modern world, being single is common, perhaps too common, and that you are not alone. Not by a long shot.

Bargain Holiday Entertaining Decor and Accessories

One of the aspects of holiday entertaining is to create a magical wonderland in your home for you and your guests to enjoy. Part of your job as host or hostess is that you want to make them feel comfortable and strategically place ice breakers throughout the home. For me, this is more fun than the food part of entertaining. I love holiday decorations for the buffet table and around the living room and kitchen, especially at a bargain. There are several kinds of entertaining decor for the holidays that I can't go without.

Perfect for a buffet table, a table runner (pictured above) full of festive colors and patterns will set the theme for the table and automatically create the right seasonal touch and warmth in the room. For around $8, you can't go wrong. Look for easy to clean fabric and material, such as polyester. It won't look cheap with all the fixings. Save the expensive linen for a more intimate occasion.
