Re: Fifth Bonsai Challenge, discussion

Well, my posts for the 5th weekend are up. Nothing extraordinary, just routine work trying to put in order a lot of stuff that has been neglected due to being so busy with the asociación, national exposition, and related activities. I get so ambitious at times I dig up way more than I can manage. But at least I don´t have time to get bored. It sure would be nice to get some killer material like I see you guys working though. That seems much more interesting than what I am doing!

Hey Sam, are your Pemphis putting out any seed yet?

Re: Fifth Bonsai Challenge, photos

excuse me for posting first..LOL

i went quick on the workshop on friday because i went on duty on the best parts of the weekend....

anyways.... here is the aftermath!

Attachment:

Picture!4088.jpg

i am contemplating whether or not i should have done that much shari on the trunk...
the problem that i faced with the material was that it was too fat and bulky... and my one solution to that was do shari to give CONTRAST and DEPTH making the trunk look less bulky and MONOTONOUS... i hope i am right... though, premnas in the wild appear to have extensive shariS; this is one characteristic and appeal i have fallen in love with.. this became my inspiration

Attachment:

Picture!4089.jpg

branches prepared

Attachment:

Picture!4091.jpg

this supposedly first branch is QUARTERED to give way for secondary branches... still to be detailed though after shoots appear and become well established...

Attachment:

Picture!4092.jpg

next step is to wait for shoots and then take the next step from there. more trunk work perhaps.. :-)

this is how i picture the final tree (less the detailed carving and further trunk work) with it's foliage..

Attachment:

untitled.JPG

I have a soil pile in the corner of my yard. soil from repots gets put here. there is everything you can imagine mixed up. akadama, cinder of various grits, kiryu, old roots, dirt, grass clippings plus who knows what else. most of my collected material gets planted in this stuff. nothing glamorous but it works. I can't say what effect this mix has on the color ( of the foliage?) sometimes the leaves are light green/yellow at first then later turn dark green. bougainvillea are as tough as ficus, so no worries.

think you will have to locate and contact each one for their data. We had one nearby, the Weyerhauser Bonsai Collection but it recently closed up due to budget issues.

There's also Dan Robinson's Elandan Gardens not too far from here in Bremerton, WA.

http://www.weyerhaeuser.com/Company/Bonsai

http://www.elandangardens.com/

That's all I know about in our area other than nurseries such as Bonsai Northwest.

http://www.bonsainw.com/

Nice, by they way Sam what substrate mix do you use for your bougainvilleas? have you notice any change in the color?
I should work on mine but maybe later, this week are Gymnopodium, quite a nice species, although it has its problems, like it takes a while to get decent branch thickness.
