In the EU, filament bulbs are rapidly disappearing from the shelves of supermarkets and specialty stores.
The residents are buying this product in bulk so they have enough of the supply to last for dozens of years.
This is how the local population reacted to the decision of the EU energy ministers to switch to more ecologically-friendly and less expensive light sources – energy saving lamps.

Starting today, a comprehensive ban on sale to the consumer of 75 watts filament lamps comes into force in the EU. Europe intends to completely get rid of old bulbs by 2012.
The predecessors of energy saving light sources have been already removed from the production, and stores are allowed to sell the remaining stocks.(...)

U.S. have banned video game

Military bases across the U.S. have banned the sale of a new video game that lets a player pretend to be a Taliban fighter and “shoot” U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

“Medal of Honor” by Electronic Arts, a major game developer based in Redwood City, Calif., hits stores Oct. 12. Gamers are scoffing at the decision, saying that advanced technology has made it commonplace in the gaming world to let players switch sides and play the bad guy.

After public protests, including by British Defense Secretary Liam Fox, U.S. military officials decided not to stock the game in any of the nearly 300 base exchange shops.(...)

The Bodyguard and Britney Spears

A former bodyguard sued Britney Spears on Wednesday, claiming the singer repeatedly subjected him to “repeated unwanted sexual advances” and harassment.

Fernando Flores filed the sexual harassment lawsuit in suburban Los Angeles, alleging the singer intentionally inflicted emotional distress.

He is seeking unspecified damages from the Grammy Award-winner and his former employer, Advanced Security Concepts Corp.

The lawsuit claims that Spears, among other things, exposed herself to Flores and summoned him to her bedroom while she was naked.(...)

The invasive Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, is known as the “golden clam” in the aquarium trade and the “good luck clam” in its native southeast Asia.

A thumbnail-sized clam blamed for clouding the azure bays of Lake Tahoe high in the Sierra Nevada has now turned up in a mountain-ringed Adirondack lake renowned for its limpid, spring-fed waters.

A light aircraft carrying skydivers crashed in flames Saturday near a popular tourist spot in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, killing nine people including four foreign tourists, police said.

The plane caught fire after takeoff from an airstrip at Fox Glacier on the country’s South Island, said Ian Henderson, a spokesman for local ambulance services. But other locals said the fire erupted when the plane crashed into a fence at the end of the runway after it failed to lift off safely.

The pilot and eight passengers were killed, Greymouth Police Senior Sgt. Allyson Ealam said.

Ealam said four foreign tourists from Ireland, England, Germany and Australia were among the dead, and the embassies of each victim had been informed.

Police would not release names until next of kin had been advised, she noted, and the bodies would remain at the crash site until Sunday when they were to be moved to Dunedin Hospital for autopsies.

An identification team was en route to Fox Glacier, she said.

In addition to the pilot, four New Zealanders — reportedly skydiving instructors — were killed in the crash.

New Zealand’s stuff.co.nz website said there is only one skydiving company operating out of the Fox Glacier airstrip, Skydive New Zealand, but a company spokeswoman reached by telephone refused to comment. An answering machine message at the company said skydiving had ceased for the day.

Police said the aircraft was a Fletcher fixed-wing plane of a type designed and built in New Zealand. The planes are popularly used for scenic flights and skydiving in the area around New Zealand’s Southern Alps.

Fox Glacier is on the western coast of the South Island, about 90 miles (150 kilometers) from the main city, Christchurch, which was hit early Saturday by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that damaged buildings and injured at least two people.

The fatal crash was the third in the region in the past 17 years.

In October 1993, nine people died in a plane crash when a twin-engine Nomad 22 crashed at nearby Franz Josef Glacier. In October 1994, seven people were killed when a Helicopter Line Squirrel helicopter on a sightseeing flight crashed in a mountainous area near Fox Glacier.

In August, two international expeditions for volcanoes studying were launched.
Russian and American researchers went to the peak Sarychev, located on the Kamchatka Peninsula (where, incidentally, yesterday the Day of volcano was officially celebrated).

A sick internet joke or a serious business proposition? A restaurant in Germany has been conducting an advertising campaign for people to donate body parts which will be transformed into delicious dishes at a new restaurant called Flime.

The advertising campaign has been carried out not only online but also on television and in the press. Calling for donors to donate body parts “any part of the body”, the restaurant, called Flime, in a secret location in Berlin, claims that the donors will be considered “members” of a new dining cult.(...)

Jason Statham, an English actor and martial artist, known for his roles in many action films, recently got an invitation from Gazpromneft, an oil arm of the giant Gazprom to appear in a clip promoting a new company’s brand, machine oil G-Energy.

Statham played roles in the Guy Ritchie crime films “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”, “Revolver”, in the American films “The Italian Job”, “The Transporter”, “Crank”, “The Bank Job”, “War” and one of the characters in the current Moscow’s hit “The Expendables”.
