1. For Laundry

Directions:

Mix a small amount of Blue Miracle with water. Soak laundry for about an hour then rinse.

MARCOS M. DUMANDAN doesn’t have a classroom anymore but he continues to teach; this time, to other farmers.

In the past five years, his contribution and participation in research and development on diversified farming, integrated pest management, and balanced nutrition have benefited not only his fellow farmers within Southern Mindanao, but also farmers from all over the country.

His improved integrated/ multiple cropping systems and his expertise in balanced plant nutrition with emphasis on organic and inorganic farming have impacted greatly on many farmers with small land holdings, minimizing their production cost, while maximizing output.

Step 1: Gaining diverse experience

Mark was born in April 25, 1941 and graduated his BS Agriculture at Central Mindanao University, Musuan, Bukidnon in 1963, passing the Teacher’s Board Examination in 1965. He then took up BS Education and graduated from the International Harvardian University (IHU), Davao City in 1968. He earned his Master of Arts in Education from IHU and the University of Mindanao in 1970.

He then became the national marketing manager for the Makati-based Sigma Trade Resources Philippines, Inc. of Vancouver, Canada from 1998 to 2000. Before he became a full-time farmer, he served as a consultant for the Philippines for the Ranadey Group of Companies in Puna, India from 2000 to 2002.

Step 2: Participating wholeheartedly

On November 10, 2003, Mark officially became the Magsasaka Siyentista (MS) of Region 11 for its Knowledge Management and Farmers Information and Technology Service (KMFITS) Center. Since then, he has consistently been a much sought after farmer trainer in the region.

Without thought for reward or remuneration, he unselfishly shares his knowledge by teaching and showing his technology innovations to fellow farmers through technology trainings, farm tours, and lakbay-aral to his farms. He is often invited as resource speaker in various training and consultations within and outside the region. Currently, he does farm research trials on balanced plant nutrition and productive growth.

Mark co-hosts the University On-the-Air Program Linkage-Techno Gabay Dissemination and serves as a resource person for the local radio program “Bahandi sa Kaumahan ug Kadagatan” aired over DXRP Radio ng Bayan. Through the program, he shares modern and applicable agricultural technologies and discusses development issues for the listening public in Davao City and all other areas in the Philippines that are reached by the broadcast.

Recognizing his leadership and his efforts in improving the economic situation of his fellow farmers and the community, the Regional Agri-Fishery Council (RAFC 11) appointed him as a consultant on the land conversion issue. Further recognition came his way in 2006 when he received a GMA Leadership Award for his efforts in bringing technology to the farmers. He was also adjudged as the Most Outstanding MS in Davao Region for CY 2006 and 2007.

Step 3: Innovating continuously

The Dumandan farm is planted to coconut, cacao, durian, banana, and coffee. Earlier, Mark had used commercial fertilizer solely to nourish his plants. But his training and earlier experiences firmed up his decision to shift to a system of balanced nutrition. Gradually, Mark achieved optimum production and despite the decrease in input, his profits increased. Dumandan also experimented on pruning the trees in his farm. Results showed that pruning improved the growth and increased production of the trees. Now, he performs heavy pruning, deleafing or debracting to ensure the quality of growth and production of the trees.

He showed that fruit pests can be managed with the use of a combination of creoline and ‘tawas’ and that this combination is as effective as commercial pesticides. The population of fruit borers, for instance, would still decrease with reduced material cost. This has encouraged him to shift from the use of expensive pesticides to the use of the creoline-tawas combination. With the use of a grass cutter, he can weed a wider area and has cut down on the use of conventional weedicides, while reducing costs for hand weeding.

Shifting from the conventional mono-cropping to multi-cropping has improved productivity with several fruit-bearing plants growing in a given area. In addition, he has developed a scheduling of tasks so that only one person per day can maintain the farm, instead of the usual 4-5 men. This reduction in the labor force reduces the production costs and contributes to higher profit.

Step 4: Connecting with the community

Farming has been a part of Mark’s life for 30 years now and throughout this time, he has been an active participant in and promoter of agriculture-related activities in his community. Thus, he shares his time as an active member or officer of different socio-civic organizations that cater to the needs of fruit growers like him. These organizations include the Little Baguio Livelihood Association, Inc., Baguio Water System, Go Modern Agriculture (GMA) Associations, Inc., and Farmer Industry Advisory Committee.

For all his success, Marcos Dumandan can sit back and rest on his laurels. However, this erstwhile teacher enjoys his life as a model farmer who continuously extends his hand for the community. His family is living a more comfortable life since they started earning from their diversified farm. As his fellow farmers still seek his guidance toward the betterment of their respective farms, Mark remains approachable and generous of his time. As it is, he never really left the teaching profession – only now, his classroom is the farm.

Menopausal Syndrome Made Easy

MENOPAUSE is the absence of menstrual period for 12 months. The menopausal transition starts with varying menstrual cycle length and ends with the final menstrual period.

Perimenopause means "around the time of menopause."

Postmenopause is the entire period of time that comes after the last menstrual period.

Menopause is the time in a woman's life when the function of the ovaries ceases. The ovaries are the main source of female hormones. The hormones also regulate the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. Estrogens also protect the bone. Therefore, a woman can develop osteoporosis later in life when her ovaries do not produce adequate estrogen.

The average age of menopause is 51 years old. But there is no way to predict when an individual woman will enter menopause. The age at which a woman starts having menstrual periods is also not related to the age of menopause onset.

FEMAPOS is designed for women over 38 years of age whose estrogen levels have begun to decline. It is suited for women suffering from some perimenopause or menopausal symptoms.

Most women reach menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, but menopause may occur as earlier as the 30s or 40s, or may not occur until a woman reaches her 60s. As a rough "rule of thumb," women tend to undergo menopause at an age similar to that of their mother's.

Perimenopause, often accompanies by irregularities in the menstrual cycle along with the typical symptoms of early menopause, can begin up to 10 years prior to the last menstrual period.

It is important to remember that each woman's experience is highly individual. Some women may experience few or no symptoms of menopause, while others experience multiple physical and psychological symptoms.

The extent and severity of symptoms varies significantly among women.

Symptoms of Menopause

1. Irregular vaginal bleeding.
Some women have minimal problems with abnormal bleeding during perimenopause, whereas, others have unpredictable, excessive bleeding. Menstrual periods may occur more frequently or they may get farther and farther apart before stopping.

There is no "normal" pattern of bleeding during the perimenopause, and patterns vary from women to woman. It is common for women in perimenopause to get a period after going for several months without one.

There is also no set length of time it takes for a woman to complete the menopausal transition. The menstrual abnormalities that begin in the perimenopause are also associated with a decrease in fertility, since ovulation has become irregular.

However, women who are in perimenopause may still become pregnant until they have reached true menopause (the absence of periods for one year).

2. Hot flashes and night sweats.
A hot flash is a feeling of warmth that spreads over the body and is often most pronounced in the head and chest. It is sometimes associated with flushing and is sometimes followed by perspiration.

Hot flashes usually last from 30 seconds to several minutes, and are likely due to a combination of hormonal and biochemical fluctuations brought on by declining estrogen levels. There is currently no method to predict when hot flashes will begin and how long they will last.

Hot flashes occur in up to 40% of regularly menstruating women in their forties, so they may begin before the menstrual irregularities characteristic of menopause even begin. About 80% of women will be finished having hot flashes after five years. Sometimes, in about 10% of women, hot flashes can last as long as 10 years.

Sometimes, hot flashes accompanied by night sweats (episodes of drenching sweats at nighttime). This may lead to awakening and difficulty falling asleep again, resulting in unrefreshing sleep, and daytime tiredness.

3. Vaginal symptoms.
These occur as a result of the lining tissues of the bagina becoming thinner, drier, and less elastic as estrogen levels fall. Symptoms may include vaginal dryness, itching, or irritation, and/or pain with sexual intercourse (dyspareunia). The vaginal changes also lead to an increased risk of vaginal infections.

4. Urinary symptoms.
The lining of the urethra (the transport tube leading from the bladder to discharge urine outside the body) also undergoes changes similar to the tissues of the vagina, and becomes dryer, thinner, and less elastic with declining estrogen levels. This can lead to an increased risk of urinary tract infection, feeling the need to urinate more frequently, or leakage of urine (urinary incontinence). The incontinence can result from a strong, sudden urge to urinate or may occur during straining when coughing, laughing, or lifting heavy objects.

5. Emotional and cognitive symptoms.
Women in perimenopause often report a variety of cognitive (thinking) and/or emotional symptoms, including fatigue, memory problems, irritability, and rapid changes in mood. The night sweats that may occur during perimenopause can also contribute to feelings of tiredness and fatigue, which can have an effect on mood and cognitive performance.

6. Other physical changes.
Many women report some degree of weight gain along with menopause. The distribution of body fat may change, with body fat being deposited more in the waist and abdominal area than in the hips and thighs. Changes in skin texture, including wrinkles, may develop along with worsening of adult acne in those affected by this condition. Since the body continues to produce small levels of the male hormone testosterone, some women may experience some hair growth on the chin, upper lip, chest, or abdomen.

In a gathering of vitamin D researchers recently held in Toronto, Dr. Cedric Garland delivered a blockbuster announcement: Breast cancer can be virtually "eradicated" by raising vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D is "the cure" for breast cancer that the cancer industry ridiculously claims to be searching for. The cure already exists! But the breast cancer industry simply refuses to acknowledge any "cure" that doesn't involve mammography, chemotherapy or high-profit pharmaceuticals.

That's the message vitamin D pioneer Dr. Cedric Garland delivered in Toronto Tuesday as part of the University of Toronto School of Medicine's "Diagnosis and Treatment of Vitamin D Deficiency" conference - the largest gathering of vitamin D researchers in North America this year. More than 170 researchers, public health officials and health practitioners gathered at the UT Faculty club for the landmark event.

Garland's presentation headlined a conference that reviewed many aspects of the emerging vitamin D research field - a booming discipline that has seen more than 3,000 academic papers this calendar year alone, conference organizers said. That makes vitamin D by far the most prolific topic in medicine this year, with work connecting it with risk reduction in two dozen forms of cancer, heart disease, multiple scleroses and many other disorders.

Dr. Reinhold Vieth, Associate Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at University of Toronto, and Director of the Bone and Mineral Laboratory at Mount Sinai Hospital, organized the event in conjunction with Grassroots Health - an international vitamin D advocacy group founded by breast cancer survivor Carole Baggerly.
