How To Build A Drawer

As the new direction of this blog continues to unfold I am confident that we can have some fun with this. What is best here is to have me saying things like “we can have some fun with this”. Lynns’s 14 year influence in business with me sure shows up here. Anyways how to build a drawer? A friend emailed me the other day to ask if I would layout some drawers for him. Let’s call him Paul since that is his name. I think he was talking about something like this. And these are the exact things I want to offer in my blog. So let’s use Paul to help us with our customer questions in our regards to “How To Build A Drawer”. Paul will be calling and we will start a dialogue with him on the subject. Pros and cons to the drawer guides and drawer style etc,etc. Sounds like fun because I’m getting bored.

This is a design that we did in 2007. Notice the nice flow in the room. This room started off with the Island connected to the cabinets on the right. The owners had only one way in and out. My design took apart the peninsula, turned the area into a nice island with cook top and now seating takes on the view of the mountains in the background. This was a hands on design meaning we measured and built this one. We no longer build but we do design. This design would cost less than $400.00. It comes with a set of kitchen drawings and cabinet and appliance call outs. What else would you like to see?

I’m Back

I’m back. I have been stumbling around now for close to a year with what to do with myself. I have been writing some political blogs and now realize that this was all out of the desperation of needing to vent. What I have been through with this business and economy, I thought gave me the right to cry like a baby. Well that isn’t so.

I think that it has boiled down to a just a few things for me. The most logical is to continue to write this blog and change it to a business that will take my design expertize along with a computer generated PDF. Check this out.

This is a reprint from our other blog.”Today we close our doors after thirty years of business. The economic downturn has finished us off. We currently have no business booked for next year and have no quotes out. So I and what is left of the crew head to unemployment. This has been a sad year it seems like each month since our man Obama was sworn in I saw a little more of my business fall off. The Man has done a disservice to Small Business Well enough about him and the Leftist movement in our Country This is not a fun time I was not ever prepared to close my doors and walk away with nothing, I mean this business was my retirement plan and at age 57 time is not on my side when it comes to putting together a new plan for retirement. Stop crying and move on. I must say that I will miss building things but oh well. Not sure what we are going to do with the blog, we have a lot of readers and maybe we will do a cabinet and furniture recourse center. Who knows? Look for my giant machinery and supply sale in December.” Our train did not make it through the storm of 2009.

Decision Has Been Made For Us

Here are what I called a couple of bumps back in in November of 2009. Two different customers who could not pay due to the fact of them electing to go Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.The next day another customer changed his mind on an order he placed and then went to the credit card co and not us, they without telling us sucked his deposit out of our account. Those three items left us -$40,000.00 in the bank. I guess they were big bumps.

“Well a couple more bumps in the road and now the closing of our business will be the day before Thanksgiving. Yep that is it we are done, I have for the last couple of months been working out of the shop and on the shop floor. This allows me to be included in break time, something I have missed for the last few years. You learn a lot at break time. Today I had to break the terrible news that next Wednesday we will close after thirty years in business. I guess I did all that was possible to keep it alive, and for that reason I am able to go out with the knowledge that in thirty years we never missed a payroll. One of the immediate areas of fallout is the loss of our home in the mountains that we built and then used to keep our business alive. We will move from that home to mobile home in the desert. The photo is of the home we built in the mountains on a nice winter’s day, going to miss that place a lot. We must stop this from continuing to happen to small business. Elect Conservatives and take back our country. We don’t bow to Japan or we don’t humble ourselves to China Mr. President. President Obama not knowing what it is like to have to get by in the world is ready to give away our opportunities and those of our children and grandchildren to our competitors in World Politics.”

As I go to the factory this morning I know that we are starting the second to the last order on the books. Next week I will give the awful news to the rest of my employees that we will not reopen In January 2010. In my business you don’t write orders in the last month of the year. We are going into 2010 with not 1 order on the books and none in the quote file. This is a thirty year old business that has always had the first 2 months of the year covered. In 2009 we started with 3 months covered and then Obama and the merry band of leftist thugs started to stimulate us. After we close the business we will look at what is the best way to get into the work place I have no fear about getting a job. President Obama has made it very easy to sit at home on welfare or unemployment. That is why it will be so easy to find work. Obama’s base welcomes the thought of staying home so they can spend time at political rallies.

When this happened we thought no big deal we would sell our machinery pay off creditors and move on to the next phase of our life. Well that did not happen, the landlord locked us out , the bank forced a liquidation sale, and in this market the machinery sold for pennies on the dollar , the bank took the money, we lose our business and home, move to a different town to take care of my mother and her husband who both were put into hospice. What a day.

This is what I was feeling when it was decided that we were to close our business.

As the door slowly shuts on our thirty year business I can hardly believe it. I mean we are talking about a business that had a 10% to 12% gain for 28 years straight. And then along came Obama and that was the end. Don’t tell me it was not President Barack Hussein Obama that collapsed our economy. Don’t lay this off on Bush. This is on Obama whose lackeys administered T.A.R.P. and who administered the stimulus. Banks with no accountability and no strings attached. No monies for small business was that the key that our Fearless Leader promised? No I will attach my favorite campaign video of Obama with a big fat lie coming out Don’t tell me it is not a lie because he announced last week that he was making more funds available to small business. I am on the front line of this war and there is no truth to that. We need fiscally conservative leaders to come forward.

We Got Shutout

As Obama puts the squeeze on Small Business Loans by cutting off a bank with a history of being friendly to small business he hurts us some more. Now as Congress starts their talk of Payroll over $250.000.00 means you pay a healthy chunk, they rock our confidence in future profits. That means in an economy that is in a recession, small business works at its lowest profit levels ever. We employ the highest number of people in the country, but we are not communicating with each other. Small Business needs to become a Political Voice made up of people that believe in our current system. This group of people will come from each political party in our country otherwise it will not work. How we go about it is up to us. The Internet is the tool for this to snowball into the largest grass root effort to elect a President ever seen. We need help in getting together online. What Happened?

This is s a reprint from my other blog July 19,2009.This is when we started thinking that this situation was hopeless. “President Obama has fallen down on his campaign promise in Toledo Ohio on October 13,2008. That is when he said “Last Friday I proposed a small business rescue plan, that would create an emergency lending fund to lend money directly to small businesses that need cash for their payrolls or to buy inventory.” In that same speech he also said “If Congress does not act in the coming months, it will be one of the first things I do as President of the United States of America.” Small Business Loans are a thing of the past so I guess Obama made his stance with Small Business. We need a fiscally conservative President In 2012 and we need to find that person now and small business needs to get this person elected.” When will we start seeing orders based on this vast bank bailout?

Where To Go From Here?

This is always a hard one for people, you spend your entire adult life working in one trade and then you need to make a change, where do you go? I have been doing a lot of reading to help guide me to the next part of my life. Now I think through the comments from friends and family, and this blog that I will figure out a way to do something in this industry that has treated me so well for so long. As one old customer told me when he called me the other day ” your my private woodworking encyclopedia” He sure has helped in this decision to keep writing and to see where this blog goes. I think it is headed into do it yourself articles by me and experts in other areas of construction. We will also do some reports on the great new tools out there for homeowners. We will show you the best source in your town for hardwoods. All kinds of stuff. What do you want to see? Let me know or let me know if you are in the trades and you want to post a article yourself. The guy who did this sculpture started out doing this for fun.

Starting Over

Dam yesterday was tough. The last day after thirty years it did not seem good. This is not what I had intended as my exit plan. I don’t even know why I am writing today it is a habit I seem to have. We had a lot of fun with this blog and why not it is a down home blog, we have written about personal things along with our business stuff. We did a lot of community stuff like back in 2008 we gave away 132 king size cherry wood sleigh beds to victims of the Witch Fire. There are memories of the giveaway that I will not ever forget. The customers we have had through the years have been great some have become very good friends and we will miss seeing them. One regret is that my grandson was not old enough to ever do a project in the “big shop”. I will dream up a piece of furniture that him and I can build at home, wait a minute isn’t that how this all started 30 years ago with my son? Today’s photo shows my grandson pursuing my favorite pastime I wonder if he has my passion for building stuff?

Working At The Sanding Table

The Denrey Downdraft Sanding Table has a 72×36 work surface. It operates with an air system that takes all the sanding dust and particles and sucks them into the filters below the table (that is why Lyle does not need a mask). Yesterday’s blog showed you the drum sander, used as the first pass for rough sanding. After the drum sander and assembly, the nail holes at the doors, drawers and frame pieces are first puttied, then the receive two levels of sanding at the sanding table; one at 100 and the second at 200. After this prep and final assembly furniture pieces receive their hand rubbed oil or stain. If the work is for cabinets, they are ready for finish by the on-site paint contractor. Proper sanding is one of the most important elements for a fine finish. No matter what the construction, if the sanding is not done patiently and properly you will have a sub par finished piece. For a project you will be proud of, take the extra time to sand properly.

Using The Drum Sander

The drum sander is the first machine that the solid wood hits after the material has been ripped. The material for face frames are run on one side while the door stock is run on both sides to a certain spec. The glue ups for doors, tops, and various other things are also run through the drum sander. The sander was bought new by me in 1983 and was manufactured by Haney Machine Co. in Oregon. That Company is long out of business, they were a victim of the Chinese taking over our machinery industry. This machine gets a least 5 hours of run time every day, and has been in fulltime service for 26 years. The Chinese knockoffs have a 5 year life. Another fine mess our politicians have got us into.
