I have now officially launched my personal portfolio website, KINGSLEYWILLIS.COM

Officially, it is the:

Portfolio of digital media professional, Kingsley Willis, in videography, photography, motion graphics, visual effects, web design, and print.

Sadly, that means the end of my Stanford website and blog, but it is the start of new and exciting projects for me. I will still continue "Kingsley's Blog" on my new site here: kingsleywillis.com/blog. As of 9/3/09, it still re-directs back to my Stanford Blog.

The Foundry Fixes RollingShutter

Does your camera give you a rolling shutter effect? If so, this generally is not a good thing. What is the rolling shutter effect? Wikipedia defines it as the following:

...not all parts of the image are recorded at exactly the same time though the frame... This produces predictable distortions of fast moving objects or when the sensor captures rapid flashes of light.

This rolling shutter effect or "jello-cam" as it is sometimes referred, is a tell-tale sign that the camera you are using is not professional and will produce an amateur look and feel even to those who don't know what rolling shutter is.

Luckily the Foundry has now produced a plug-in for Adobe After Effects (and Nuke) that will fix this problem. The price is a bit steep though at $500, but this may be the only way of correcting footage to track in 3D elements if you have shoot with CMOS sensor cameras like Canon's HV20, 5D Mark II, or
even a Red One.

Here is a video produced by the Foundry explaining their product:

Here is a link to the Foundry's site with more information and suggestions for settings the Red One and Cannon 5D:

UPDATE (8/6/09): Stu of Prolost.com who has used RollingShutter, says it is just a "crutch," and "a tool to help us limp along while camera manufacturers sort out this CMOS issue."

Apple Compressor Errors: 4 Solutions

I have yet to use a piece of software that is perfect, but usually there is some pattern to any errors I might be get. I am still searching for the reason why I get "Quicktime error -9459" and "3x crash service down" qith Apple's Compressor version 3. A simple Google search reveals only others with the same cryptic and unsolvable errors.

My Solutions:

1. Don't Use Compressor: use Quicktime Pro (~$30 or including with Apple's Final Cut Pro studio) instead to export. You don't get the same level of control but at least you will get the job done in a pinch.

2. Check your Codec: make sure the codec you are using is one that your machine can play and transcode. Open the file in Quicktime Pro, and then take a look at the info for the file to discover the codecs used.

3. Keep Digging: if you find a better solution thatn I have to these pesky Compressor problems then share the solution by making a comment below.

4. Call Apple: If you are really in a bind call Apple support. Let us know what they told you.

So far the subjects have been mainly landscape, but I plan to post more news worthy and seasonal photos down the road as I catch up with the time of year.
I shot footage of the new building weekly from February to May 2009. In the editing process, I brought together footage of the demolition shot by Bindu Madhava and photos of the new building by Jamie Tsui. The timelapse was particularly challenging because of the sure amounts of data and the ebb and flow of work throughout the year. I created the new bumper for the School of Medicine in Adobe After Effects and edited with Apple Final Cut Pro.

I got the inspiration for the opening sequence of music from STOMP and Bindu Madhava composed it. The rest of the music is called Metamorphosis and was composed by Megan Miller and her band.

Here's a candid shot of my wife I took when we first moved to Santa Clara. She was watching TV and I asked her to look up for a second: 'snap.' As always, I think she's beautiful!

I struggled with the composition in camera until I got something interesting that framed her. I am proud to say I did not crop this photo! The lower third of the picture is actually the other couch. It adds a lightness that I think complements the dark upper half of the photo. I bounced the flash off of the ceiling. This is a very simple technique that seems to produce some very professional results. I did do some post processing to bring out her eyes and skin tone.

Sometimes the bud is more beautiful than the flower. I noticed this gorgeous pink rim to the bottom of the California Poppy. The thin shroud over the orange petals is also something I've never noticed. All these things caught my eye and I just had to pull out my camera.

I didn't do much in the way of post processing which I think is when you know you have a solid photo to start with. I just boosted the clarity and the vibrance a bit and posted it to Flickr.
