Superheroes are born from adversity, bred in fighting atrocities, and are forced to exist in anonimity. Regular citizens like you and I who took it upon themselves to vanquish evil and all that jazz. Knowing full well that it's the stuff of legend, a loner by the name of Dave Lizewski has decided to take back the streets. Armed with a set of batons and a steel will, the legend that is Kick Ass is born. Along side seasoned veterans Big Daddy and Hit Girl, Kick Ass takes his nose out of his comics, and puts their boots to the bad guys butts.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. We all know that Charlton Heston parted the Red Sea as Moses in The 10 Commandments. And we all well aware of the older stop animation films of Ray Harryhausen and how cool King Kong must have looked atop the Empire State Building back in the 1930’s. But today, we hold special effects up to a higher standard. The technology has advanced tenfold just in the past five years and our expectations in effects laden flicks have turned big budget summer blockbusters into money making monsters.

THE GATE. PHANTASM. SHOCKER. I`ve reviewed a good number of films from my demented childhood, but none match the affection I have towards THE NEW KIDS, a film released in 1985 and directed by Sean S. Cunningham (FRIDAY THE 13th). I`m not sure if my infatuation with this film is due to the excellent cast, or the “stand up and fight back” attitude it delivers, but whatever the case, I`ve never forgotten about the film’s existence and just recently purchased the DVD for a visit back down Memory Lane.
Just a week ago, Paramount announced that Saw VI director Kevin Greutert would helm the sequel to Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity and that the studio would release the movie on October 22, directly up against Saw VII 3D. It sounds like the breaks have been put on that deal as Deadline Hollywood reports that "Saw" franchise partners Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate have exercised an option that puts Greutert back in the director's chair for Saw VII 3D, leaving Paranormal Activity 2 without a director for the moment.

Back in 1990, Joe Dante’s post-modern Gremlins sequel, The New Batch, all put killed off any possibility of the creature features ever developing into a franchise. Despite that, MarketSaw are now reporting that a third Gremlins film is in early development. According to their source, Gremlins 3 is also being crafted with one eye fixed firmly on 3D. No big surprise, considering Avatar’s continued box office coup.

Latino Review is reporting that Avatar and upcoming Clash of the Titans star Sam Worthington is a frontrunner to star in Universal's Dracula Year Zero, to be directed by Alex Proyas (Knowing, I, Robot). The film is an origin tale of Vlad the Impaler, the Romanian royal who inspired Bram Stoker's vampire tale. It centers on how Vlad became the creature; the choices that he made to make him into the tragic character. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote the script.

It must be tough being a gargoyle. Vampires and Werewolves get all the big budget movie treatments and gargoyles hardly get any screen time at all. Come on. Be honest. When was the last time you saw a gargoyle movie? Even a bad one. I can remember a gargoyle as part of a story in Tales from the Darkside: The Movie back in 1990. And I remember an animated Saturday morning cartoon show called Gargoyles. That’s about it.

This film cracks me up just thinking about it. I thought Halloween was lacking in plot but this film takes the cake. In the opening sequence, we see a woman being raped by a handful of local, barbaric construction workers. Just another night on the wrong side of the tracks - “Hey Rocco, want to go grab a brew and then rape a broad?” This happens even before the opening credit sequence. You put the DVD in and this scene is the first thing you see. Why waste time, right? It’s not until the men have finished playing stuff the muff that the credits come in.

Ashley Greene, who plays Alice Cullen in the "Twilight Saga" franchise, has graced the cover of Maxim magazine this month (December 2009). We were hoping Ashley would be wearing nothing more than a handful of mini sized candy canes, but no luck there. The spread overall feels like a fall issue of a “SEARS" clothing catalog which sort of sucks, but oh well.

Electronic Arts is once again trying to revive the on-and-off first shooter franchise "Medal of Honor" with this latest effort simply titled "Medal of Honor". Their last effort "Medal of Honor: Airborne", was definitely not the kick start EA was hoping for. The game was decent, but failed when stacked up against the "Call of Duty" franchise.

The gents over at QuietEarth.com posted some interesting info regarding the currently in-development 3D reimagining of The Gate (the classic PG-13 kiddie horror from the 80s). The most interesting tidbit for QE readers is probably that H.R. Giger is on board to design new creatures for the film. However I wouldn't expect anything quite as sinister as the Alien. The re-make is aiming to retain the PG-13 sensibilities of the original and keep the film light-hearted.

As you know, when something is popular in Hollywood (or even mildly successful), it's going to get a sequel. This is especially true for horror, it seems. Can you think of a popular and successful horror film that has not had a sequel or has a sequel in development? The only one I can think of at the moment is the original Black Christmas, which is actually shocking that a sequel never got off of the ground. But for every good sequel (see this list for a list of the best), there are at least three bad ones. I'm fairly certain that is not an exaggeration.

Writer-director James Toback’s Two Girls and a Guy is one of the lost great movies of the 1990s. What might appear as a “Friends”-era sterile romantic comedy is actually as far removed from that as possible, full of nasty acts of duplicity and retribution and a faked suicide and an ‘NC-17’-worthy love scene (which really looks SO tame by today’s standards).

When I saw The Matrix back 10+ years ago, I was in awe of how much I enjoyed a movie to which I had no fucking clue what I just witnessed. Same with the film Dark City a few years before that. These movies were great, but it took repeated viewings for me to understand what the hell was going on with the convoluted and complicated screenplay. What put me in the state of awe were the incredible visuals and style of the film that sucked me in so deeply that I got lost trying to take it all in with an intricate storyline in tow.

At a time when too many animated films consist of anthropomorphized animals cracking sitcom one-liners and flatulence jokes, the warmth, originality, humor, and unflagging imagination of Up feel as welcome as rain in a desert. Carl Fredericksen (voice by Ed Asner) ranks among the most unlikely heroes in recent animation history.

That is what Kevin Williamson said when I asked point blank if his claim to "never play Sid out that way" still stood. But first, some backstory. In July, it was revealed that Neve Campbell passed on returning for the upcoming "Scream 4," a fact I celebrated since horror movies have a habit of killing off their heroines when they return for subsequent sequels.

It’s not very often that I come across a good low budget horror movie or in this case, exploitation film. In the world of indie filmmaking these days, people (purposefully not using the term “filmmaker”) are so eager to make a movie that they don’t put enough attention towards acting, product value, pacing and overall entertainment. I’ve seen enough Citizen Kane attempts on a shoe string budget to last my life time and yours. Thankfully, Vicious Circle Films gets it and delivers the best grindhouse experience I’ve seen in years. Click above for full review!
