Unfortunately, now they are in danger of becoming extinct. These magnificent creatures are threatened by whaling, garbage, chemicals, noise, fishing lines and more.

Did you know?

Whales are mammals, which means they are warm blooded and breathe air like us although they live in water.

A whale's nose is on the top of its head and is called a blowhole. A single breathe from a blue whale can inflate 2000 balloons! Isn't it amazing?

The largest whales are blue whales. In fact, they are the largest creature ever to live on Earth.

Ten whale species are on the endangered list, including the baleen, blue, and right whales.

He used to go to forest daily and bring firewood and sell it. He was cutting trees to make them firewood. He never knew that trees are valuable and they are not to be cut.

One day he was cutting a branch of a tree. the branch was about to fall into the river. At that moment a cheetah appeared near the tree. He was hungry. he saw raman. He wanted to eat him away. He atarted climbing the tree. the boy feared. Below was a big tree. He was not knowing how to swim. The cheetah didnt wait. He climbed the tree. The boy decided to fall into the river. However there was a branch being cut. He felt that he would float on the branch of the tree and escape from the cruel cheetah.

The cheetah was nearing him. Raman took his axe and cut the branch with force. The branch fell into the river. But Raman was holding it. The branch took him away and enabled him to escape from the cheetah. Raman went too far along with the branch. Finally he reached the bank of the river.

Raman thanked the branch. The tree had saved him from danger. Raman decided not to cut the trees from then onwards. He started loving the trees which had saved him. he planted samplings in the places which he had cut the trees. He stopped selling firewood. Instead he joined a factory to do hardwork.

They were getting food daily. They were all happy. One night a cat entered the hole and attacked all the rats. all the rats went out running thay all feared. But some how the cat catched one small rat. The cat took it and ate it. Next day the mother rat was caught. The other rats started to worry.

They assembled at one place and discussed the matter. One fatty rat suggested, " We are all independent. then how can we accept our defeat? We have to be free from our enemy. let us put him to death."

Then a small rat got up and said, " Its not so easy. The cats are powerful. They catch us and kill. the easy way is to escape from it. But we have to know is arrival. So let all of us find him and tie a bell in his neck. When the cat comes we can come to know as the bell will ring and we all can escape."

The suggestion was accepted. But an old rat said, " Its alright. But who is to bell the cat?" No rat ca me forward to tie bell to the cat. The suggestion failed. Next suggestion came. A wounded rat got up and informed, "My dear friends, tomorrow when cat arrives let us all fall on it and put him to death.

All the rats agreed. Next day they waited the cat entered the hole in the night. the rats bit the cat with their sharp teeth. The cat died. All the rats were happy. then the wounded rat boosted, "Actually I killed the rat. because I gave you the suggestion. Otherwise you would not have killed it".

The other rats didn't agree. Each one boasted. they quaralled with each other. They envied each other thereby. All are seperated. They started wandering alone.

A few days passed. Another cat entered the hole. He started eating rats one by one. In a short period all the rats found dead.

Moral of the story:

Unity is strength. Standards of hygine in operating theatres at this time were so bad that to be taken to hospital was almost a death sentence. Lister developed a system of cleaning everything that came into contact with a patients wounds with an 'antiseptic' called carbolic acid. He was able to prove that this method destroyed germs and greatly reduced infection.

This is not as strange an idea as it sounds. In 1928, Scottish Professor Alexander Fleming was clearing out his laboratory when he noticed a dish of bacteria had become contaminated by a mould called Pencillium notatum. he observed that the bacteria had been killed where they had come into contact with the mould. after refiinement, the mould became the first antibiotic wonder-drug, now known as 'Pencillin'.

It was fine to shout loud enough for the seamen on your own ship to hear, but communicating with other ships while under attack was almost impossible.

In 1800, Sir Home Riggs Popham, a rear admiral, came up with a clever way of signalling to other ships. he devised a code which involved hoisting flags, each with a differently coloured design. the code was known as Telegraphic Signals of Marine Vocabulary.

Since then it has been shortened a number of times to make it safe. Then, in august 2007, the pole was taken down because it had become too dangerous to raise a flag. woodpeckars had damaged it making the pole unsafe.

Today, the tallest flagpoles dont have this problem. The rubber band was firsr made in London in 1823 by Sir Thomas Hancock. Since then, there have been many improvemnts in the quality of the rubber band and it has come to be adjudged as one of the most important inventions of the 20th century.

Even though the rubber band is used extensilvely as a packing aid, some people hit upon the idea of making a rubber ball by simply stretching rubber bands, one over the other. The world record ( as recognised by Guinness Book) is held by John Bane of Wilmington, Delaware, USA. Here are the statistics of the biggest rubber band ball in the world.

Weight - 2800 lbs

Height - 5 feet

Diameter - 15 feet

Time taken - 4 years, 2 months

Number of rubber bands used - 5 lakh, 50 thousand

cost - 12,000 dollars

Why does a rubber ball bounce?

Rubber is viscoelastic material which means it is both viscous and elastic. Rubber is characterized by its resilence - if you drop it from a height of 1 metre, then it will bounce back to 0.5 to 0.7 metre depending on the rubber type and resilence value. Higher the resilence, higher is the bounce which means higher elasticity and lesser viscosity.

Generally, butadiene rubber has higher resilence property, followed by natural rubber. Due to this resilence property of rubber, it is used in tyres, etc.

If you come across a timber depot, stop a bit and look closely at the cross-section of a tree trunk. You will observe a series of concentric circle. these circles indicate the age of a tree.

How does it happen?

When a tree grows, two types of layers grow around its trunk every year, one soft, the other hard. These layers grow around in circles. External factors such as extreme cold, heat, famine, excessive rain etc., determine the shape, size, and thickness of the layers. Since this takes place once every year, the age of the tree can easily be calculated.

" Although water goes through phase changes, it is always water. The chemical make-up of water does not change whether it is solid, liquid or a gas."
Steps

When chocolate is heated, it melts and becomes liquid. When it cools, it becomes solid again. Break some chocolate into pieces and put them in a heat-proof bowl. Put the bowl into a saucepan one third filled with water.

Put the sacepan on a low heat and stirthe chocolate until it melts.

Pour melted chocolate onto some biscuits.

The tall canes are cut down and taken to factory called sugar mill. There they are shredded and crushed between rollers that squeeze out the juice. The juice is then boiled with lime. This gets rid of the unwanted bits in the juice. It is then boiled to make syrup and small lumps of sugar crystals. A centrifuge seprates the brown crystals from the syrup. The crystals are taken to other countries and refined into white sugar.

Festival of Masks

Masskara festival in Bacolod city, Negros Occidental in The Philippines is Bacolod's version of Mardi Gras celebrated in october. The week long celebration kicks off with mask-making contests, food fairs, brass band competitions, beauty and alent pageants, a windsurfing regatta, drinking and eating contests, trade fairs and lots of exhibits. The highest of the festivities is a parade with street dancers in vibrant masks and colourful costumes.

The symbol of the festival - a smiling mask was adopted to signify the happy spirit of the region, in spite of periodic economic downturns in the sugar industry in 1980.

The word masskara was coined from two word 'mass' meaning multitude of people and the spanish word 'kara' meaning face, thus denoting multitude of smiling faces.

They were called Celts and spoke a language called Celtic, which totally was different from English.

Then about the year 450, the land of Celts was invaded by three tribes from a place that is now the country of Germany, in northern Europe. These tribes were Angles, Saxons and the Jutes. These tribes fought a war with Celtic people. The Celts lost the war, and they had to leave England and move to other parts of british Isles. Today only few people in the British Isles speak Celtic language, and there are almost no words in English that come from Celtic.

The Angles, Saxons and Jutes all spoke the same language, but in slightly different ways as they had settled in different parts of germany. Once they had settled in England all the tribes began to speak the same way. this new language came to be known as English, after the tribe called the Angles as they were in majority.
