Use Keyword Phrases for Linking or Anchor Text!

First of all, let’s talk about first what is the linking or anchor text? Linking text, also known as anchor text, is the clickable text that takes people to another page or resource or another website. Anchor text is the visible hyperlinked text on the page. Now let’s discuss why it is important to choose this linking or anchor text carefully?

So if I have a mortgage website and I have few articles, then I can provide a link with anchor text as ‘Latest Articles’. If you analyze, you will agree that this is right as I am capturing all my related articles in this category. But if I call this link as ‘Latest Articles on Mortgage’ or ‘Latest Mortgage Articles’ has much more significance and meaning to both users as well as the search engine bots. So you will agree that the second option is a better and preferred one.

Let me expand the above idea with two specific explanations:

1. Keyword rich text is more meaningful to humans as it explains the links better. If the readers know exactly where he or she will be taken by just reading the links, the reader already knows what he will be provided when he clicks on that link. This is very powerful as that reader is mentally ready to accept that information rather than a website forcing that information to that reader.
2. All the search engines like google, MSN, Yahoo etc. prefer this type of the linking as it provides them information in advance about that link before they check that link.

So I say this is a win-win scenario for every one. For highly competitive market, these extra ‘points’ that Google gives can mean the difference from appearing on the first page of results and appearing nowhere. The inclusion of important keywords in the anchor text can make a big difference in the final ranking of your site pages. All search engines that matter, give significant weight to the anchor text on your pages. In fact Google even has a special operator: ‘allinanchor:keyword’, which picks up text only from within the anchor text of indexed pages.
