They've done several wonderful animated shorts over the years--some of which I've featured on Keyframe in the past--and now they are attempting to raise money for their first long-form animated special. PBS has agreed to air the special in the fall of 2013, but StoryCorps needs to raise $25,000 to make this project a reality. As of this writing they'd raised a little over $17,000, but the great thing about a Kickstarter project is that every little bit helps. If you're interested in this project, but can only put in $5, then that's perfectly fine too.To learn more about this project, check out the StoryCorps Animated Special Kickstarter page.

And here's an example of one of the great shorts they've done in the past...

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/KeyframeExtraExtra/~3/K7HPZIgrAVM/http://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=416Sun, 02 Sep 2012 18:41:32 GMThttp://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=416Comic-Con Weekend Recap
My grand-scheme of posting all the animation panels for each day of Comic-Con got sidelined by a bad back over the weekend, however here were all the panels that happened.

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/KeyframeExtraExtra/~3/OPiG9vtzp5k/http://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=415Mon, 16 Jul 2012 19:22:17 GMThttp://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=415Comic-Con Day 2: Ponies, Zombies and Avatars... oh my!
Heaps of stuff going on at Comic-Con today if you're an animation fan. If you had asked me back in 1999 how long I thought I'd be running Keyframe, I think my answer would've been closer to 13 months as opposed to years. I could never have done it alone and our longevity is in large part due to the hard work of our editors—past and present—who have tirelessly added the 1500-plus profiles of animation that make up the site. And of course we also wouldn't be here without our members, many of whom still remember the creaky early editions of the website years and years ago. To this day, even I come to Keyframe to find out from our own users what I should be watching out in the world of animation. So, raise your glass, fellow Keyframers! The list wasn't so much an article but a picture gallery of 10 characters who "tease audiences with cartoon chemistry" so there isn't a whole lot of actual content to nitpick here, although the folks over at ToonZone's Voice Actors in the News have a delightfully scathing article on THR's choices. What I find interesting is the use of the word "inappropriate". I mean, we live in an age where sexuality is plastered everywhere—and I mean everywhere. I remember walking through a shopping mall a few weeks back and passing a ladies lingerie store with a poster of woman in a bra and panties that filled the entire storefront window. This was perhaps two stores down from a kids clothing store and the "Build a Bear" toy store. Do I think that poster is going to melt the brains of the little children who pass it? Not really. Frankly I don't think it would even make their radar given how saturated our media landscape is with such images. So why the hub-bub? Is it because animation is supposed to be filled with only kid-friendly, completely non-sexy imagery? Jessica Rabbit, not surprisingly, made THR's list but let's not forget that Who Framed Roger Rabbit? was not a film written for a strictly kiddie audience. And if anyone thought Holli Would (also on the list) and Cool World were meant for a kid audience clearly has never seen a Bakshi film before. As for the Disney character couples on their list like Eric and Ariel or Jasmine and Aladdin... oh c'mon! Both of their films were love stories. By definition, being in love kind of requires... oh, I don't know... chemistry between the characters. And since Jasmine and Aladdin's first date culminated in a single kiss and Eric and Ariel's in not even that much, I'd say that they're setting a better example of what to do with that chemistry than a lot of media that's out these days.In any case, in the humble opinion of this writer, there's nothing wrong with being a sexy toon. And since animation speaks to as broad an audience as the rest of media, it shouldn't be asked to be any more inherently "appropriate".

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/KeyframeExtraExtra/~3/J3EqGaBK06Q/http://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=407Sat, 28 Jan 2012 18:47:14 GMThttp://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=407And the nominees are...
It's Oscar season again and, for the first time, a Pixar feature film didn't get the nod from the Academy. Since 2003 the nonprofit organization, StoryCorps, has dedicated itself to allowing Americans of all walks of life to record, share and preserve the stories of their lives. Most of these stories remain in a purely audio format, but a few of them have now become the audio track to several animated shorts also created by StoryCorps. This past week StoryCorps released several stories told by people looking to remember loved ones who are killed on September 11th. I've included my favourite below. In many ways the shorts reminded me of similar films such as Give Up Yer Aul Sins or Aardman's Creature Comforts with the very off-the-cuff sort of dialogue combined with animation. StoryCorps aims to record at least one interview for each life lost on September 11th, but I hope they also continue creating these animated shorts as well. I think there's something rather magical in remembering people this way. These stories are not necessarily momentous or earth-shattering. They are simply the stories of eveyday life and loss, regardless of whether that life was lost old age or a horrific event such as 9/11. However I think that by combining this unscripted audio with animation there's the opportunity to show a bit of the beauty and magic that makes up even a seemingly ordinary life. For more StoryCorps animated shorts, visit their YouTube channel.

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/KeyframeExtraExtra/~3/XPf0Uy4PwIQ/http://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=400Sat, 10 Sep 2011 18:18:50 GMThttp://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=400Tangled gets short film sequel
When I saw this in my morning news feed, I couldn't help but think "Wow, a sequel to Tangled already?!" Some films and series however have never made it out of the vault at all. Movies like Song of the South and a number of the series belonging to the Disney afternoon like Pepper Ann, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and Gargoyles have never been released on DVD in their entirety. The fan-run website, Open Vault Disney, is looking to change that so that fans and their kids can enjoy the same classic cartoons that they grew up on.Open Vault says: "We understand that to achieve this aim, we have to view it from the 'business perspective,' as in Disney is more likely to release these titles if they feel they will make a profit on it that pleases them. To that end, our main idea is to get Disney to fully immerse into the world of DVD-on-Demand just like Warner Bros. has with their Warner Archive. They have recently started a DVD-on-Demand collection, sold through Amazon.com called The Disney Generations Collection. What we want to do is direct this collection into the release of these various titles. We hope that some titles that could be released the DVD-on-Demand rout could end up so popular that they end up in a proper, retail DVD releases in time, like many of the NickToon titles that were originally sold via the DVD-on-Demand option on Amazon, but will be satisfied just to have them released at all."To learn more about Open Vault's efforts visit their website or follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/KeyframeExtraExtra/~3/luOr2TAcawY/http://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=396Wed, 17 Aug 2011 20:43:10 GMThttp://www.keyframeonline.com/NewsArchive/?article=396Digital Domain's animation studio announces its first feature
Tradition Studios—the name of Digital Domain Media Group's new animation arm—will be stepping into the feature animation arena with a movie about elephants. The Legend of Tembo follows the story of a baby African elephant taken to India to become a war elephant.
