Surprisingly, yesterday qualified as a disappointing day of fishing for Dave Lamoureux, a 42-year-old Wall Street trader from Chicago set out from Cape Cod in his 12-foot sit-inside kayak to break the 187-pound barrier for a fish hooked and landed unsupported by kayak.

He came up a tad shy.

Yet at 157 pounds this bluefin tuna puts him squarely in the record books for the largest bluefin, and likely the largest tuna, and one of a handful of history's very biggest and boldest kayak catches.

Kokatat recognized for quality

We've long known that U.S.-based paddlewear company Kokatat made great clothing and PFDs for kayak fishing.

Now it's been formally recognized with the company's receipt of ISO 9001:2008 certification.

Congratulations, Kokatat.

We like this company because they're great to work with. They make most of their stuff in the U.S. on the California coast. Like us, their staff actually paddle and are passionate about the sport.

But why should we care that they received ISO 9001:2008 certification?

California's crown jewels on the chopping block

Anglers in California have been fighting tooth and nail (hook and gaff?) in the state's MLPA process to protect their rights to continue kayak fishing in the very waters where the sport was born.

Options on the table like this one depicted to the left for La Jolla "will kill us," says frequent Kayak Angler Paul Lebowitz, a good knight who's put his life on hold to lobby the government on our behalf.

Paul says,

The new doomsday for kayak fishing in SoCal is Tuesday the 10th. Only Dana Point appears safe; our dual crown jewels of Malibu and La Jolla are both under dire threat.

This manufacturer's an ardent fan of kayak fishing

A big-name reel manufacturer scrambles their PR team to promote their sponsorship of a kayak fishing tournament winner.

A few years ago this would have been unimaginable. But it just happened.

This press release from Ardent just landed on my desk, announcing (a week after we ran the story) Gilbert Hernandez' win of the 2009 Plastic Navy Tournament Trail.

It's further evidence that kayak fishing is going mainstream.

Kayaker attacked by great white shark

A man kayaking off of Portland, Australia, was attacked by a 12-foot-long great white shark on Friday.

The Australian newspaper The Age reported that Rhys Gadsden, 27, was out for a morning paddle when the shark surfaced and clamped down on the bow of his kayak, a plastic Dagger sit-inside.

Gadsden clubbed the shark on the head with his paddle until it let go of the boat. The shark then bumped Gadsden, who fell out of the kayak into the water.

Gadsden was terrified that the shark would return and attack him in the water. He was left floating in a panic for 15 minutes, but the shark disappeared and Gadsden was rescued by a nearby boat.

The attack left puncture holes in his kayak.

The newspaper reported that Gadsden's friends have taken to calling him "shark bait."

The greenest sandals

While much-hyped green clothing companies come and go, one sandal company has been quietly doing a good job of making products that stay out of the trash for as long as possible.
