The last few months have disappeared in a whirl of colour, texture and fabric. Making designs of texture and pattern and printing the first of my series of signature silks….We now have the new printed “Katelyn Aslett” silk ready on the racks to be released at Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival in Brisbane on 24th August.

The photo shoot was fantastic- to see the designs on Elle and Sas was like falling in love…like seeing them for the first time after weeks of being surrounded by the colour and texture and cuts it was so wonderful to see them as though for the first time and realise that it was all I had dreamed and more…Insight Creative were once again inspired behind the camera and Sas and Elle captured the happiness behind this collection. We set up the photo shoot in the main workroom in my studio which has added such a lovely personal feel to the shots that add a special depth..

I am so looking forward to getting the pictures out so watch this space and we will have them online soon. Until then dream in colour…

Ok.. we have had another busy month, so much for getting a blog off every week. Thankyou to all who are feeling the cold and going in to look at my new pieces in all my lovely stockists… there has been such a fabulous response to the winter collection and I am working very hard to get everything out as quickly as I can, so please be patient if you are waiting for a special order. I really like to spend enough time on each one until I am happy, so you are happy when it arrives. And there is always the challenge, due to the very unique production, of getting pieces just right.
This month I was honoured to recieve a special commendation award for my commitment to the local arts scene from my local council. I thank all who voted for me, it really is very humbling to be recognised for the work that I love so much. I was also asked to present an award which of course I enjoyed. Nothing like an excuse to get dressed up and enjoy yourself.
I have spent a whirlwind few days in Sydney working on what is going to be the most exciting development in my design work… something I have been working on for several years is about to come to fruitition and I am so excited that I will soon be able to share it with you. I have had one of those weeks where things start to take shape and I can hardly hold in my excitement to share it.

While in Sydney I was lucky to get an invite to the Porters Paints Bowie Wallpaper release. Bowie is a well known Sydney designer whose label is pretty awesome and he has produced a beautiful wallpaper collection in collaboration with Porters Paints (the best paint I just love what they do). It was of course a beautiful night with Champagne and lots of interesting people talking design.
Next week is going to be a whirlwind with an invite to Government House in Brisbane for an evening with the Govenor at the Q150 Reception to celebrate Queensland Excellence in Design.
Then we have a beautiful Mothers day event that will be held at Dance North. A fabulous collaboration with the dancers to create a spectacular fussion of dance and fashion. The beautiful Michelle is choreographing a truly expressive event and I am enjoying making a few really special pieces to show. This month has started with a whirlwind visit to Sydney to have meetings and a little champagne and cupcake parade afternoon, visits to the Opera House for the Sydney Theatre production of Travesty… beautiful costume and set design and a very stimulating dialogue and a fabulous concert at the Enmore Theatre- Rokia-Traore, if you ever get to see Rokia perform don’t miss it- the energy and beautiful optimism and intelligence and the raw passion made this an inspiring performance.

We celebrated birthdays and engagements and the Gay Mardi Gras…

Happy First Birthday to Miss Opulence in Moray St in Brisbane, have a beautiful day Sue…. Your store is a beautiful delight to all who enter and I love to send my beautiful pieces to you.

I still have a few thoughts and pictures from New York… one is a great find at 67 Prince St .. A beautiful shop called DusicaDusica. Selling a beautiful collection of shoes and bags to die for designed by the owner and made in Italy, it is well worth a look as it has a really beautiful aesthetic and craftsmanship. It is always so rewarding to find beautiful and well made pieces from designers who have something special to give….

I am now back into full on production mode with orders to get out and lots of great colours to dye up… the studio is a buzz of action with the dye pots simmering and new pieces being laid out. The new cardigans are so beautiful each time I finish one I just have to look at it and smile like a new special friend. I don’t know if I will be able to part with them….

New York

I am home to flooding rain after the most incredible 10 days in New York. It was snowing in Central Park- so beautiful… the hot chocolates were well worth looking forward to- particularly the Belgian Chocolate and Chilli in Soho.

There are so many great memories I may bore you so feel free to dream off while I re-live the experience.
I was so fortunate to be involved in such a lovely event- G’day USA….with so many fabulous Australian designers( 9 of us altogether) We set up at the Australian Consulate and were then introduced to buyers from Barneys, Bloomingdales, Nieman Marcus,Bergdorf Goodman, Harpers Bazaar, various Stylists, bloggers, Conde Naste Traveler… the list goes on. Such an amazing chance to get feedback and understanding of a dynamic and excitiing market place. And I love that wherever I go there are people who appreciate the craftmanship of the handmade in a world obsessed with mass consumerism and production….

The Presidential inauguration was a wonderful part of the week. The atmosphere was quite incredible and very positive. Such a moment in history. It was exciting to just walk the streets and soak it all up.
The Gala dinner at the Waldorf Astoria was a night to remember with a room full of the most incredible Australians from Baz Luhrmann and his lovely down to earth wife Catherine Martin, Nicole Kidman who just glows with such grace and style, beautiful Ursula Yovich who sang an amazing collection of songs as a tribute to Baz and his movies. The effervescent Mark Olive the Qantas choir of beautiful voices and amazing young people. It was a beautiful night. I designed a floor length skirt and beautiful beaded top for the night and it was wonderful to be able to wear a design that I was so proud of- and I was a little bit happy to be told by several people that my dress was the best in the room… is that too egotistical of me? I am now planning a whole collection based on the design…..in beautiful colours that are happy to wear.

It was a magical night and I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to be there… I just tried to live it all in. One of my favourite moments was at the end of the long night after the Gala Dinner after dancing and eating and champagne and chandeliers, I walked off into the cold night with “Moon River” playing in my head,I headed home walking the freezing streets- it felt like my own “Breakfast at Tiffanys ” moment and I loved every minute of it…..I love New York it really is quite magic for all its complexity and romance. Now it is back to work…

Welcome to the New Year

Welcome to the Katelyn Aslett blog…. It has been a long time coming after a very busy year of new collections and exhibitions and new web sites. I will now be keeping the blog updated with developments and happenings and maybe the odd picture from my travels and new work as it happens.
I have been working on some lovely new textural pieces for my winter collection ” Joyful” that will be shown in New York for G’ Day USA later this month. The collection includes my new Cardigan Collection of re-dyed and recycled wool, some beautiful adaptations on my Origami Wraps that will be so warm and textural for the cold winter. Also the fabulous new Many Petaled Skirt that is so fun.
I look forward to my first blog on the road from New York City……
