Canon EOS 40D, EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Trust me there is a very good reason why I’ve been slack with postings lately, and its not only because I’ve been chasing bokehs* In the meantime here is a little bokeh experiment when cleaning my lenses over the weekend. Almost all windows, can have this or a similar effect if you take a bit of time to compose your shot. The mundane part that you don’t recognise here, is the bit out of focus; the leaves and branches in the tree we have just outside the window. And a building ‘North Leagues‘ across from the road about twenty meters away. Using your camera if you stop down real wide and set aperture for f/3.5 or lower it makes for very interesting captures should you can get the subject crisp. Also a little post processing helps to bring out the edges, add a little contrast and signature(in this case). This was shot around midday with ample harsh light on top of the tree and some filtered streams through the branches and leaves, which makes for the magical bokeh! If the same shot was set for on anything above f/5.6 you probably wouldn’t even bother looking. Click on the image if you want a closer view.

* The pleasing quality of the out of focus areas of an image produced by a lens. Derived from the Japanese word boke, “blurred,” this term is sometimes used to describe the deliberate blurring of areas of a painting to create a sense of depth

Last weekend we toddled off to Canberra for a quick break from the constant Sydney rain. Its amazing what a little break from the routine can do — and so glad we got out and about! Having heard a bit about Collector from D’s browsing, it did seem very interesting. The place certainly seems to have a lot of history attached to it. We took the turn off into Collector but to our dismay on a Saturday morning about 11:00am Collector seemed totally deserted, forlorn! Except for an old rickety petrol station turned into a café – not terribly inviting. We kept driving through the small town and turned into one of the inner roads which lead us to a corner church with a huge annexed field mostly uncultivated with some ponies and horses about! There were signs of ‘Pumpkin festival’ on a wooden doors across the church. There were cockatoos squatted just about everywhere nibbling on the cold frosty grass. I walked alongside the wire fence of the large field and waved gently at one of the horses. Acknowledging my presence it walked towards me: klap, klip klap, clip clop, kopotikop. As soon as it was at an arms length the horse stopped and lifted its upper lip and exposed its grotty pinkish gum and ugly yellow tartared teeth — then flared its nostrils at me forcefully… followed by a horsy grunt with a blow and then another! Ah that putrid smell came wafting down my clean camera. I quickly paced back with my gear. Holy Moly! Here I was thinking all things country are meant to be friendly and nice. Back in the car we tried to explore a bit more but the town seemed dead! There were road closure signs along the way too. We had little choice but got back on to the motorway to Canberra.

Canberra, ACT

Once on the Federal Highway time goes real quick as u drive along. The views of Lake George is always fascinating though I’ve never seen water in that lake — ever! Of late though the area seems a lot more greener and we noticed the other side of the lake now has wind turbines that look really nice from a distance let alone its a great carbon reduction process. Its good to see natural wind energy being harnessed. We were soon in Canberra and headed for Ginger Catering in the old Parliament. Its a gorgeous café in the house! It sure is an old favourite of ours and the food never disappoints. But who knew we’d be getting the same pot pies again just like three years back! That same scrumptious taste that left me licking my lips and a sense of satisfaction that even superlatives don’t express. They must be doing something right! We knew we were in Canberra and also I must say there is something grand about pulling up in front of the Old Parliament House with the view of the old architecture behind and the manicured lawns and rivulets running around leading to the view of Mount Ainsley on the other. Live on olde world charm!

Chicken and vegetable pie with puff pastry top and steamed green vegetables tossed in Homeleigh Grove olive oil

We still had a ton of time to kill before the hotel check in. So we went up to the top of Mt Ainsley. It was quite cold up there, about 4 degree C and add the wind chill factor as well. There was perfect synergy of sunlight on one side of Canberra while the other had the rain clouds dancing about in the horizon letting off a spectacular misty display from its shower cap against the Black Mountain Tesltra Tower. It was so cold my fingers were freezing and it was hard to operate the camera buttons and the sun had practically no effect at all. I took some shots and then we headed down to the suburb of Kingston.

Rain coming through while most of Canberra is still well lit. Beyond the hills is where the State of Victoria starts.

The road that takes visitors back down the Mt Ainsley

While at Kingston, we walked around the block and then went into a little cafeteria there the Lemon tart look to hard to turn away from. Surprising the coffee was brilliant too. Life is short we pleased our inner man.

Beautiful lemon tart in a cafe at Kingston, ACT

We took another walk around the block looking through shops and little cafe and possibly looking for places to come to for dinner — until we spotted a wine bar to kill more time — as you do and then headed off to Rydges Lakeside, London Circuit. In the evening we headed to a gorgeous place for dinner…. Thanks to my trusty iPhone App that never fails to recommend good eatery. It was a french restaurant called Aubergine in Griffith — a suburb about ten minutes drive out of London Circuit Canberra. Part of the reason we also went there is because every other place we did try to get in was full. Wow Canberra — I tell you Julia’s keeping the place busy. Unlike Sydney we got a spot right outside Aubergine. No parking stress in Canberra — and we were seated for a nice three course degustation! The food was simply beautiful. And the service was very attentive except for one thing! I did have a fillet of beef for my mains but had to use normal knife(without serrations) — in hindsight I don’t really know why I didn’t ask for one. The fillet of beef was beautifully tender — but still! The food was really yummy and we’d so recommend it. Check out the menu!

Bundanoon, NSW

Canberra came to an end all too quick, we left next morning after out brekky at Rydges. We came up to Bundanoon around lunch time and went back to the Red Violin. Still full from last nights beautiful dinner but sure could squeeze in a toasted sandwich and scones for D. Yeah the very same one! Yummy.

Shame it all came to an end all this quick. We were back in Sydney before we knew it but was good to be home sweet home!

Now this is what I call an unhealthy obsession with Black and White Photography. But I reckon its too late. After processing the photos using the usual workflow I then go around and do a B/W version of the same. Its worth the effort because in most cases the B/W photos when done right they stand out so much more crisper than their colour counterparts. Or at least they work for me. I’m LOVING Black an whites lately.

Last Sunday I took part in the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk 2010 at The Rocks, in Sydney. This was my first ever randezvous with a group of photographers, hobbyist, amateurs and semi-pros alike. The Worldwide Photowalk is a social photography event where photographers get together to walk around and shoot photos and have fun. And it sure was and its good to mingle with people who have similar hobbies and interests. The only challenge if any was to find time to chat and concentrate on decent photography at the same time. Not easy! Despite BOMs predictions the weather turned out to be fine and the clouds cleared up and had the sun come out in all its glory. I remember walking along the Bennelong point felt quite warm, probably also because i was lugging all that gear and had a thick jacket on. We didn’t quite have the perfect blue skies that sunny Sydney normally does but the clouds sure did add their touch of character to the winter blue. I came back having met some nice people and a fair bit of camera chat with all my budding gear questions that I always seem to have. Here are some photos I took. As you can probably tell, they were all quick and hurried shots.

I love the shadows in this photos. The tree in the centre is like one gigantic life-giver making the place around it beautiful. Its almost like a frame from the movie ‘Forrest Gump‘ I can hear: “Run Forrest Run”.

After driving through for a few hours we stopped at a road side motel which was appropriately named Rajasthan Motel. We were almost on the border of Delhi and Rajasthan. By this stage of course we were hungry. Rakesh-ji drove us right into the car park under the shade of a nice big Banyan tree. Any shade in summer in India is God sent. We opened the car door to step out and the first thing that hit us was the gust of hot air. Just like when you open the over door after you’ve been baking for an hour! Luckily we were getting more and more used to the hot weather. There was no escaping!

Looks much more than a motel doesn’t it? Thats the entrance to the motel, through the narrow hallway it leads on to a massive big dining room all of which was non-air conditioned. Then we walked through that onto the left which had a nice sized air-conditioned room where we sat. The window to the left is where we had our lunch while the earth scorched outside.

Looking at the greenery you wouldn’t quite think it was about 46° centigrade here would you? And yes I often pondered how they keep these places green in such extreme climate! There ought to be some method to this madness other than just plain watering.

We’re seated inside in the nicely air-conditioned part of the Motel. Meals have just arrived. The garlic Nan bread was really nice even though the photo looks rather pedestrian.

The Rajasthan Motel Motif on their plates

And some more shots while we waited for our food to arrive. The food was quite good even for a roadside motel and we didn’t feel unwell or otherwise. We rushed back in the car for the rest of the journey with baited breath for Jaipur.

Yes we got snap happy as you do when you waiting for food

The Road to Jaipur is pitted with hardware shops almost every small town or village we passed had at least 5 to 20 Ball Bearings shops or dealers on ether side of the highway. It was later we learnt that the biggest manufacturer for Ball Bearings right from the smallest machinery to the big tanks and ships are made right here in the most arid of all places. We were passing through the Ball Bearing export area of northern India and didn’t have a clue. Had I known this at the time I surely would have taken a photo or two of the Ball Bearings shops.

You’d notice a Ball Bearings shop here, and a make shift school for kids in a village we were passing by

We had finally arrived at the pink city — Jaipur. We were going to stay at Mandawa Haveli Hotel. This is a haveli, hindi for Mansion, built in typical Jaipur architecture with lots of pillars and arches right in the heart of Jaipur City.

This was one of the water features in the Mandawa Haveli Hotel. A little bed of fountain that lit up at night along with the fountain on the marble floor.

This was taken a little while back… February this year. We were relaxing up at Copacabana in the middle of this massive summer heat. The place we stayed had had a bit of trees in the backyard which was more like a garden/ cliff and beyond this there was a big drop right into the deep rocky ocean bed. There were lots of birds about resting in the shade and I went poking my head to see them every now and then as one does!

This Lorikeet didn’t mind being photographed while grooming herself. Even though I did use a telephoto lens I was quite close to the bird and it didn’t seem bothered. Although she kept a firm eye on me just to see I didn’t get too close to her comfort.

If you frequent Lightly Toasted you’d remember the time I wrote about the Classic and contemporary Women’s Weekly* Roast Book? And where you could get them cheaper? Well, I’ve to confess I love a good roast. They make me feel like I can eat all day without the thought of putting on weight not that that much deters me really! But roasting is mostly fun and very satisfying especially in winter. All those hot warm, succulent juicy roasts come to mind when its cold outside. I never much resist food really I quite literally keep eating when everyone around me has stopped. Here is a little Moroccan Chicken with cous-cous stuffing I made about a month back. Isn’t it appetising? The roasted vine ripened tomatoes are my weakness and sadly these were just a tad overdone, still yummy though.

* I have known plenty people that will turn up their nose when they hear the name — Women’s Weekly. But you know what, its quite alright for home cooking and the occasional entertaining. Not everyone packs The Cooks Companion by Stephanie Alexander or the likes in their kitchen. Its great to have gorgeous recipes but at the end of the day a lot depends on the technique, ingredients and passion.

Now speaking of ‘arsenal’ a great quote comes to mind. This is somewhat related. And bet you’ll see my correlation in a second. read on.

“An amateur photographer friend was invited to dinner and took along a few pictures. The hostess looked at his work and exclaimed, “these are very good. you must have an excellent camera.” Later, as my friend was departing, he turned to the hostess and said, “that was a delicious meal. You must have some excellent pots.”

Our Delhi sojourn was soon coming to an end. We had survived the 45°C plus heat and now on our 3rd day of the trip. We were acclimatising a little and had realised by this that stage that two litre of water intake was just not enough for the day! Our bags were packed as we waited at the reception to check out. When the guy at the reception asked where we were headed next — we chimed JAIPUR with excitement! He looked at us both and said it’d be about 3 to 4 degrees hotter than Delhi!! Of course in that excitement what was a mere 4degrees! We braved the biggest smile and said YES bring it on! Our Travel Inn guide who had checked us in at the Delhi hotel was there to see us off and we rolled off on our Innova with Rakesh-ji(the driver) behind the wheel. He was such an excellent driver.

It took almost an hour and half just to get out of Delhi. Probably because we headed out at 9am and on a Monday morning. We took a road that goes via Gurgoan and pretty wide and in great condition, except with little sense of sticking to their own lanes. About forty minutes later we came to a grinding halt. There were 18 lanes on one side of the road all leaving out of Delhi. I did count them there was not much else to do. In the meantime someone came and dropped off a copy of the local magazine (like our MX in Sydney) through the car window on to our driver. He passed it on to us. The first write up was about dealing with ‘Homophobia in Schools and with your peers’ I sank back into my seat reading a bit of that goss thinking to myself whatever happened to the so called sexually repressed orthodox society! My! Things HAVE changed in the 12 years I haven’t been around! Rest of the magazine was interesting too but just one of those flick and go kinds. You wouldn’t miss a beat if you didn’t read it. I remember D having a quick glance at it but he was more keen to see what was going on outside, taking it all in. We were truly leaving Delhi. We had seen the throng of the old pulsating Delhi, the energy and the maze of colours and the narrow lanes where you get poked and prodded to buy handicraft, you think of the sights and smells and the sights of an incredibly old city and yet in just half hour away here we are sitting in a bumper to bumper traffic jam of mostly four-wheel drives, a lot of air-conditioned cars, heading towards the toll booth where one side of the motorway can handle 18 lanes in a go! Did I say India is a land of contrasts? Huge contrasts!

I craned my neck up to see if I could count the number of incoming lanes on the other side of the Motorway. Alas in vain. It was a massive w-i-d-e road. Nothing I’ve seen anywhere else, not yet anyway! We crawled — bumper to bumper till we got to the toll booth. Just before we made it to the tool both we noticed a huge signboard telling us who exactly qualifies an exemption. The list was long and dare I say — hilarious!! We had a giggle and then D said: “Well the President and Prime Minister of India are Exempt too. Well I sure would hope so ” Do they really need to put that on a giant billboard?

We were racing through scorching hot earth. If the warm colours in the photo is anything to go by. The air-conditioning in the car was running at full throttle and we were still a bit sweaty. The landscape was parched and partly burnt, we were going through small patches of heat tornadoes. The burnt yellow dry soil and sand from the fields would form a mini-tornado and gyrate going over the piles of hay-stack on the fields and toss everything around… these were little localised heat waves. Great to watch from the comfort of zooming air-conditioned car. There was a constant haze of hot air and if you looked up ahead in the distance you could see the shimmering vehicle registrations numbers rising in a curve as we sat in anticipation thinking what was to come next. It felt a bit like we were travelling through a tunnel of fire and everything around us was a bit burnt and brown. Beautiful yet very unique and somewhat unnerving. Passing though miles of empty space at times with not a soul in sight and yet with 5 solid bars of signal on our iPhones. Vodafone seemed to look after India well.

Since then its been playing in my head non-stop! And thanks to Saint D for reminding me about it on a dreary Monday arvo.
A couple of days back we decided to go for a little drive up to Mosman. We obviously miss Mosman lots its such a beautiful suburb. We were initially going to go to Pasta Zu wen suddenly the idea of sitting and having lunch by the wharf seemed much more appealing. It was a gorgeous day. Blue skies, not a cloud in the sky. Oh beautiful sunny days like this with just enough winter crisp in the air are so cozy. Sydney weather is to die for. Really!! Well most of the time till it starts raining of course.

When we were at the Wharf sitting and enjoying the view and the lunch – a family of three ducks called past and circled around us for a while. This probably is the mother saying Hello They glided by so effortlessly. In the time we were there she’d have swam past us at least five times.

This was taken through the glass and yet you can see it feels like she was an arm-length away. Quack Quack! We were a few feathers short of a whole duck. Literally!

“Twinkle, twinkle, little bat!
How I wonder what you’re at!’
Up above the world you fly,

My blog has a bit of imagery. And most of it my own. I shoot as often as possible, catalog & process and then post a handful online. The operation though simple takes a bit of planning and a certain amount of good oopmh and mojo. Given all of this is an avid hobby I pursue it with vigour yet there are times when I feel languished for no good reason — perhaps old age. Not a spring chicken anymore! The life of a creative artist(of sorts) is very flighty and temperamental. I have moments of clarity when all I want to do is write and write more till there is no more to pen. And then I hit the bend in the road and look back and wonder if it was me who wrote all along. This ebb and flow of creativity is also a great ride for it often brings a lot of interesting perceptions to mind that would otherwise be lost. Consistency is great but remember that adage ‘Change in the only constant in life’ — ain’t that the truth!

“It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”

I was also pleasantly surprised to find that Lachlan Macquarie’s(1761 – 1824) travels took him right from the Island of Ulva in Inner Hebrides, Scotland as far as America, India, Egypt, Britain and back to Scotland.

It sure transformed the city into a spectacular living canvas of colours. Here are some shots I took during our Vivid Sydney Walk. We took the opportunity to visit the Nippon Club while in the area. Thanks L for the suggestion.

It is one of the largest war memorials in India. Situated in the heart of New Delhi, India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Originally known as All India War Memorial, it is a prominent landmark in Delhi and commemorates the 90,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who lost their lives while fighting for the British Indian Empire, or more correctly the British Empire in India British Raj in World War I and the Afghan Wars. It is composed of red sand stone and granite.

Rajpath, leading up to the Presidents Estate

Soon we were passing India Gate on our way back to the Hotel. These is a lot of construction going on in Delhi at the moment due to the upcoming Commonwealth Games in October 2010. We couldn’t park and go for a stroll as the nearby parking area had been turned into a tow away zone to facilitate some make-shift construction. After a quick hurried photo we hopped back in the Innova and went up the Rajpath also known as Vijay Chowk Road towards the Presidents Estate known as Rashtrapathi Bhavan.

On the way we passed many architectural façades some of these were the building of the National Archives of India, Nirman Bhavan, Vayu Bhavan. We took a detour on Mother Teresa Crescent which circumnavigates the Presidents Estate and then left the area after we went past a few High Commissions dotted in the Chanakyapuri Enclave also known as the Diplomatic Enclave due to the number of embassies found in this particular suburb, and yes we had a little glimpse of the Australian high commission in New Delhi

It was a great day out, we got back to our Kingston Park Hotel(don’t fall for the name) probably about 5pm that afternoon. Still about 40 degree C. Exhausted would have been a major understatement! This was our second day in the real heat. We got home thinking we’d shower and rest up a bit and the make dinner plans… by 6:30pm we had succumbed to the exhaustion of the day. Totally! We had no energy to get out in the still nearly 40 degree heat. D plundered the snack-bar in our room. There were some Indian snacks — Masala chips!! They were yummy. We slept a solid 14 hours dead to the hustle and bustle of Karol Bag Delhi!
