Man charged in Stremcha murder goes on trial November 15th

22 year old Semaj Williams, one of the men charged in the July 2011 murder of former Northfielder Shea Stremcha will stand trial on November 15th. He was set to go to trial last week but the judge postponed it after he entered a guilty plea. Yesterday, Williams again changed his mind. According to the Northfield News, a spokesman for the Hennepin County attorney’s office, Chuck Laszewski, said that Williams attorney told the court they were considering hiring an expert to help them in the trial. He waived his right to a speedy trial and was told he will not be offered another plea agreement. The second man charged in the case, 28 year old Robert Shelby Emmanuel, pleaded guilty to 2nd degree intentional murder. In exchange for testifying against Williams, Emmanuel accepted a plea bargain from the county attorney that includes over 35 years in prison. According to court documents, Williams and Emmanuel broke into Stremcha’s south Minneapolis home and shot Stemcha after he confronted the men. Williams is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree burglary. If convicted, Williams will receive life in prison and will have to serve 30 years before he can even be considered for parole.

Another step toward the new PSC

As the city and council move closer toward building a new Public Safety Center, there have been changes since the last time DLR, the architect firm hired by the City, has submitted plans. Specifically the site change which is laid out differently from the original schematics planned for a more rectangular space. That’s not the only change Architect Mike Clark pointed out. With the new Land Development Codes, there are new rules to follow. Clark had 2 draft options laid out. One that fit with the old codes and another altered for the new code. While council was given the option to consider waiving the new LDC, they agreed to follow the new code. In regard to design, council was in agreement that form should follow function. They want a sturdy, decent looking building that’s built to last. Now it’s up to DLR along with Mark Taylor and staff to further develop plans. Another consideration brought up by Councilor Pownell was the purchase of the acre of land in close proximity to the Cowles site. The city will look into what that would take. Clark agreed that it would be strategic to own that property.

City’s looking good…

The Council received an update on the city’s financial position. Overall Mayor Rossing says the city’s in good shape with a $700,000 surplus. The majority of revenue comes from LGA. The other piece is that in 2011 spending came in at $200,000 less than anticipated. Rossing credits staff for their diligence. The extra cash goes into the General Fund. To help pay for the new PSC, Rossing says they’ll use part of that money as well as the cable tv fund, the Capital Reserve fund and the IT equipment replacement fund. There will be a public hearing on the sale of the bonds for the PSC on June 5th. If you’d like more information go to the city of northfield website.

Streetscape Task Force wants your input

The City of Northfield and the Streetscape Task Force will host a Public Forum from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight in the City Council chambers. The project’s design team will have copies of the project plan and be present to answer any questions. The plan includes short, medium and long range ideas including landscape plantings, streetscape treatments, pedestrian walkways and more as well as proposals for the enhancement of major intersections along the corridors. They invite your thoughts, concerns and ideas. For more information, contact Ross Currier at 663-0319 or rcurrier@nddc.org.

Hospital Strategic Task Force meets for the first time

Following the open house, the Hospital Strategic Task Force will meet tonight at 7:30 in the Council Chambers. This will be the first time the group has met since being formed. The task force includes Hospital board members Brett Reese, James Schlichting and Charlie Austin as well as council members, Betsy Buckheit, Patrick Ganey and Ivan Imm. The first meeting will likely cover resources they’ll need for their work, whether they feel the need to hire a facilitator and when the group will report to the council.

Buckheit and Nakasian will vie for Mayoral seat, Rossing won’t run again

Filing for public office opened up yesterday. It’s already been active in Northfield. City Council member Betsey Buckheit was the first to file for Mayor of Northfield and,although it’s not official, the Northfield News is reporting that Councilor Suzie Nakasian plants to run for Mayor as well. City Clerk, Deb Little, has yet to receive her filing information. Nakasian is currently in London. Erica Zweifel announced her intent to run for re-election in Ward 3 last week and David Ludeschur filed early for Council member-at-large. Mayor Rossing took the opportunity at the end of last night’s work session to express her intention to not run for re-election. Rossing said there hasn’t been a two-term Mayor since the 50’s. She says that she’d like to leave it open for others and that she has other business goals she’d like to pursue. In all Northfield will be electing a Mayor, a council member at large and council members for wards 2 and 3. Candidates have until June 5th to file. Quinnell to take on Malecha for Rice Co. Commissioner

Jeff Quinnell has filed to run for Rice County Commissioner. Quinnell is a current member of the Northfield School Board, his term ends this year. He’ll face incumbent Galen Malecha who’s term ends this year due to redistricting.

Fire apparatus and the current fire facility

During last night’s council work session, Mitch DeWar of the fire department updated council on the condition of their trucks. Due to the aging of the equipment, they’ve had issues with the cost of maintenance as well as finding replacement parts. The safety innovations on new trucks are now standard. None of the Northfield fire department apparatus have those safety features, including non-tipping and new technology that adds foam to the water for better firefighting. They are asking to replace the 50 ft. ladder truck with a new 75 ft. aluminum ladder truck. The cost is estimated at $750,000. There are really 4 trucks in all that need to be replaced. City Administrator Madigan says there’s money in the 2012/2013 budget for the truck. The department provided a plan for replacement of trucks that goes into the year 2020. The total estimated cost at this point is over 2 and a half million dollars. The cost of these vehicles goes up about 5% every year. Sean Simonson spoke on the fire bays to house the trucks. IF the floor in the current facility is reinforced, they can store most of the equipment there. When the floor is reinforced, then most of the equipment can moved back into the facility, which will mean an even tighter fit. It was obvious during the meeting that Chief Franek wants to stay with the current facility. DLR architect, Mike Clark said that it will cost about $300,000 to strengthen the floor and to demolish the downstairs. He then moved on to the PSC site where they are still planning for possible future use by the Fire Department.
The Standard Operating Procedures committee were unable to present their report. They’ll come back to council Oct. 23rd. The entire meeting is archived online at kymnradio.net.

Dundas meets with Bridgewater

The Dundas City Council will hold a Quarterly Joint Meeting with Bridgewater Township Supervisors at 7 tonight at the Bridgewater town hall. They’ll discuss the Orderly Annexation Agreement and Items Related to it. There’s been recent contention between the 2 regarding the 800 mega hertz antenna that Bridgewater approved and Dundas wanted their say. Rice County chimed in saying they’d done all that’s required and the antenna will go up. Without that antenna it renders public safety radios mute.

Northfield city council talks with fire

The Northfield City council has a work session tonight beginning at 7 o’clock. On the agenda are updates from Fire Department Vehicle and Standard Operating Procedures Committees as well as discussion on the new Public Safety Center Building design and Process. The meeting will be streamed live online at kymnradio.net

Micro-grant for Small Engine Unlimited

Small Engine Unlimited of Northfield applied to the EDA for a microgrant. EDA member Jack Hoshouer says they granted $5,000 for signage and specialty tools to better serve their customers. There are grants available but you must meet certain parameters. You can find out more information at the city of Northfield’s website.

Filing starts today

Today’s the first day of filing for local office. Northfield will be electing a Mayor, a council member at large and council members for wards 2 and 3. Local attorney, David Ludeschur, applied early as he’s out of town. Erica Zweifel announced her bid to run for re-election. Candidates have until June 5th to file. Chamber names new Executive Director

The Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors named a new Executive Director.
Mary Schmelzer is a resident of Northfield and local business owner. She serves on the Northfield Enterprise Center board of directors. Schmelzer is excited about the opportunities.
Schmelzer’s will take over her duties on June 18th.

Click it or Ticket, your choice

The Click it or Ticket seatbelt campaign kicked into high gear. Deputy Chief Chuck Walerius says you can expect increased enforcement. As the road trip season heats up, the idea is to make people more aware of how seatbelts save lives. Police will cite you for not wearing a seatbelt. The ticket will cost you $25 but could rise over $100 with court and administrative fees. The campaign goes through June 15th.

Second Ward City Councelor Betsy Buckheit this morning became the first person to file to run for the Mayor’s position. The filing period began this morning and runs through June 5. The following is a media release that accompanied the announcement:

I’m running for Mayor because I can provide clear vision and strong leadership for Northfield’s long-term success, especially:

·Budget and planning. Like all cities, Northfield is struggling to balance its budget while maintaining service levels and limiting tax increases. We moved to a two year budget cycle, improved our capital planning, and reduced our reliance on local government aid. As Mayor, I will lead the Council to restructure our budget in the following ways:

·Sustainable development. Northfield’s long term economic success will require maximizing our existing infrastructure, improving our connectivity, and providing the best return on public investment for Northfield.

·Collaboration. Collaboration is more important than ever to reduce costs and stretch our limited resources. Partnering with the schools, arts organizations, colleges, and others will help Northfield grow and flourish.

·Consistency. Northfield has made real progress in the last 4 years on better budgeting, infrastructure planning and cost management, and economic development. Right now, Northfield needs a mayor with experience to build on what has been accomplished.

·Transparency. City government works for the public. As Mayor I will ensure that residents have the most accessible and complete information about our actions and the costs of our choices.

About Me:

I am 51 years old, and I have lived in Northfield since 1989. I attended Swarthmore College, Syracuse University, and the University of MN Law School. I have served on Northfield’s Library Board, Planning Commission, Non-Motorized Transportation Task Force, Charter Commission, Northfield Soccer Association Board, Complete Streets Task Force, Save Our Post Office group, Hospital Strategic Future Task Force, and I am currently the Ward 2 representative on the Northfield City Council. I have been a Humphrey Institute Public Policy Fellow and I have participated in the Blandin Community Leadership Program. My husband Justin London teaches at Carleton College and our daughter Elizabeth is a junior at Northfield High School.

Today’s news update | Northfield golf course gets hit with vandalism, an update on the thefts from auto and the EDA calls in a loan

There were 3 reports of vandalism yesterday. According to Deputy Chief Chuck Walerius none of them were related. The Northfield Golf course suffered turf damage, a window was busted out of a vehicle and another vehicle had the passenger side windshield spray painted.

The EDA met this morning and is recalling a $50,000 forgivable loan to ID Insight, Inc. There are conditions… Listen to the audio for all the information.

A very sleepy Professor Antsy Adams, C-Goody, The Mairinator, and Kev-E-Fly take a look at the week’s most compelling news items, and play a delightful mix of music that they hand selected FOR YOU. Buckheit bucks Madigan on PSC and Rural fire

During this week’s council meeting, Councilor Buckheit was concerned about making decisions about the Public Safety Center without input from the Rural Fire Association and how their plans for fire protection service might affect the new facility. City Administrator Tim Madigan said that it was “unrealisitic” to think that there would be an agreement with them before decisions need to be made for the PSC. Rossing asked Public Safety Director, Mark Taylor if the current solution for the PSC would work for the fire department. He said part of that question will be answered at next week’s work session. The floor is the main issue. If it gets fixed that will solve 90% of the problem with storing the trucks in the current facility. There’s still a concern over the windows and H-Vac system but Taylor says with the police vacating the facility that will alleviate SOME of the problem but it’s not a permanent solution. Fire Chief Gerry Franek will be presenting at next weeks council meeting.
On another note, the Fire Relief Association has requested a meeting with Madigan as well as Mayor Rossing, Mark Taylor and Kathleen McBride. Councilor Ganey will also be included. The meeting should take place within the next 3 weeks.

Who’s in first? Filing for office starts on Tuesday

The filing to run for elected office begins at 8:00 o’clock Tuesday morning and ends at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 5th. Council member, Erica Zweifel announced her bid for re-election. The law allows for anyone leaving town to file early. Another early filer is former Councilor David Ludescher. He filed for the at-large seat now held by Ivan Imm. An attorney, Ludescher, applied last fall to replace Kris Vohs. Ivan Imm now holds that seat. Four council positions will be on the 2012 ballot: Mayor, Council Member At-Large, Council Member Second Ward and Council Member Third Ward.

Put your tennies on and Walk for the Animals

The Prairie’s Edge Humane Society’s 25th annual Spring Walk for the Animals takes place tomorrow. Executive Director, Kathy Jasnoch said this is the 2nd year in a row that it will be held at their facility in Faribault. Walk routes are mapped out, you can walk for any length. There will be prizes for the youth and adult that raise the most money and each person that raises $50 or more will receive a free t-shirt. There will be food, games for pets and kids and vendors. The shelter will open at 10:30, they’ll have animals for adoption. For more information go to prairiesedgehs.org
