    Carry Bradshaw of ‘Sex and the City’ became famous for strutting the streets of New York in her luxurious Louboutin’s. These shoes are recognized  for their fire engine red under soles; they are easily spotted on the runway and on the city streets due to their distinctive feature. This red accent has fashioned itself as Louboutin’s trademark.

This past April, the French fashion house decided to file a million dollar lawsuit due to a claiming a trademark infringement against  Yves Saint Laurent. The rival French fashion house also showcased the fiery red under soles on shoes during the runway shows of their 2011 Cruise Collection.

Last Wednesday in a New York federal court, Christian Louboutin fought for the élite right to put red soles on shoes, being their distinguished fashion trademark. The judge agreed that this colour was definitely part of the Louboutin brand and also spoke very highly of the company. He ruled that there was in fact no trademark infringement and that other fashion houses have the right to feature this colour on under soles. It was also mentioned in the courtroom that YSL actually presented red soles in their collection in 1970 and it was never a vocalized issue. So looks like we’ll be seeing a lot more red soles on city streets!

1. Â Â  Use at least one consistent color in both the shirt and tie:

First choose your shirt. Whatever colour the shirt is (lets say it is taupe) you must feature this as an accent colour in the tie. Your tie can be any pattern or texture, as long as it has taupe (in this case) as an accent colour to equalize the look.

2. Â Â  Vary the size of patterns:

Choosing the same size pattern for both your shirt and tie will result in a busy overly crowded look.  For a cleaner look choose one large pattern and a smaller one. If the shirt you choose has thin pinstripes on it, the tie may have a bolder and larger stripe pattern. This is how you carry out the same pattern in a fresh and sophisticated way.

3. Â Â  Match patterns:

If the shirt you are wearing has a small pattern, the tie must have a large pattern. This rule works vise versa and it works when matching patterns. If the shirt you choose has a small, simple plaid print try pairing it with a tie that has a bold and colorful plaid print. By using the same pattern but in different doses, you are creating an excellent contrast!
