If this is the case…it depends. Credit cards tend to have a couple or so day lag before they hit your account. XBox Live treats all cards, debit and credit, as a credit card in my experience. I would expect a couple days, more or less (weekends, holidays, time of purchase, etc.)

Best advice is to wait a few days until you have the money in the account. It’s not worth the overdraft fees really…

Okay, in short my xbox is in one place but my computer and modem are in the other. I need to connect to Xbox live. I have and adapter but its not strong enough to reach the signal from my wireless router. I cant move my xbox to my computer room but I do have a laptop that gets the signal fine that i can have in my room. How can i make Xbox live happen?

Kacey: You need to buy a really long ethernet cable. Just measure how far the distance is along each wall and buy a cable maybe 5 or 10 feet longer just to be safe. Just plug the ethernet cable into your router and you should be good to go. Either that or buy a new router with a stronger wireless signal.

I have xbox 360 and xbox live. I set up iternet connection sharing through my laptop to play xbox live and it worked for about a week, that is, until i went to columbus and brought my xobx 360 and laptop with me. To use the internet at my hotel i had to change alot of settings on my laptop, similar to setting up a vpn. I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop, and it’s running smoothly – It doesn’t have a wifi card at all, yet, because it was my brother’s old laptop and he took it with him. So I just need to know if i can just use a regular one, or there’s certain ones that wont work.

There are certain wireless cards that don’t work with Ubuntu, but most do. There is on such thing as “regular” WiFi cards unless you can define what a regular one is. The best thing to do would be to find the wireless card you want to buy, then Google search “X wireless card ubuntu 10.10 compatibility”. You should get some search results about whether that specific wireless card works or not.

Your best bet is to get a small home router, like a Linksys WRT54G. You could also use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the laptop if you wanted. That involves a few steps, so do a Google search on how to do it, and you’ll be good to go in no time.

Problems with Hibernate Function on Laptop with Ubuntu?

I just switched my OS on my laptop from Windows XP to Ubuntu Linux and I’m happy with it for the most part. However, I’m having trouble getting the hibernate function to work. Whenever I click hibernate, the monitor simply goes black and the computer enters a dormant state, but the power never actually goes off. So I end up having to force it to power off by holding the power button. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Sounds like it might just be sleeping instead of hibernating.

Hibernation with Linux is still a little bit hit and miss, sadly. How well it works for you depends a lot on the make and model of your laptop. I can’t make any suggestions about what to do without knowing that.

Your best bet would be to hit up the Ubuntu forums and search there for details on your laptop.

Use Linux for the bridge. Install the bridge utils package. You’ll have to reboot the Ubuntu machine. Also dual homing Linux is quite simple while dual homing windoze can be fraught with peril. So again Linux will be a much better choice.

You’ll also want to install and configure Squid.
Only glanced at the two links I included but at a glance they look reasonably detailed and will at least get you started. I’ve never done this with Ubuntu but it was mostly painless doing this with Fedora. I doubt Ubuntu would be much more difficult.

if u have a single hard disk partition then it’ll be difficult to install (still not impossible) but if u have a different partition then u can easily make ur system a dual boot system……….

you have too many options. I suggest to install ubuntu on a virtual machine based on vista. first install virtual box application from http://www.virtualbox.org.
Then you will be able to install ubuntu as a fresh copy. This is the best way for any newbies.

Yes. Exactly what to do I cannot say. It is not clear what your goal is. If the XP machine has ethernet, then surely it can connect to the Internet that way. If so, what do you want Ubuntu to do for you?

If you do not have any ethernet network device (modem, switch, etc.), then you want Ubuntu to ask as a proxy for packet forward. Your laptop machine will need to be able to run BOTH ethernet and wireless at the same time.

Look into the iptables package (firewall) for how to construct firewall rules to perform automatic packet forwarding.

for being able to go online wireless from your ubuntu laptop you need to make sure of the following things.

1. your laptop should be equipped with a wireless n/w adapter.
2. ubuntu should be equipped with wifi adapter drivers package.

eh….hopefully this isnt a really stupid question because i looked all around my laptop and it really doesnt seem to have one, but then again, it came with 2 cds, and in the help sections it talks about insterting cds a lot. im guessing i need a seperate external usb cd dvd drive.

look up the model of your dell computer on the dell site and see if it didn’t come with one. That is very strange for a computer to not come with one. I guess it depens on where you bought it. Anyway, you can buy a new one, external or internal. Internals are a little harder to find and it can be tricky finding driver so an external should be fine.

Which laptop do you have? There might be an open slot on the right side where you load the cd at.

Do you have a mini or full size laptop?

Minis do not have an internal CD or DVD drive. You must use external.

i suppose you have the Inspiron Mini 910.. Inspiron mini 910 do not have built in cd drives so you need an external CD drive for your computer.

BTW, All mini notebooks do not have cd drives…

Your DVD drive will work out of the box in Ubuntu. Actually, most things in Ubuntu work out of the box. You probably won’t need any “drivers” unless you run some obscure hardware.

If you are that worried about “drivers”, you can always test out Ubuntu first before you install it. Ubuntu comes as a live CD, meaning you can run it and any changes you make to it won’t hurt your existing operating system (until you decide you want to keep Ubuntu.)

So test it out first. See if all your hardware is supported. Chances are it will be.

The installation process will find the correct drivers for you. With Ubuntu the software repositories hold the correct information so you shouldn’t need to do any finding yourself.

You can try this out though … download the Live install and burn to CD, then re-boot into Ubuntu – it will run from the CD and not install anything, just show you what you will get.

If everything seems to work then from the Live CD you can choose to install Ubuntu – it will let you choose between blanking out Windows or retain in a separate partition alongside Ubuntu.

Creating a Live CD is the way to go. Alternatively check out Wubi and install as a Windows application.

Ok.. they forgot to tell you that you should have a internet connection thru a lan cable. when you do the install or test drive it. Common mistake. Ubuntu will find everything for you. Including your wireless drivers. Now if you want to watch DVD’s you will have to install a few things as those a proprietary drivers and need to be enabled from the repository. nothing major. If you want a major headache.. try Wubi . it’s best to run linux natively. if you want to keep win 7 you can do that.. it’s a dual boot set up.

There is definately a learning curve to getttin used to the way things are done in Linux,but wasn’t there one also with Windows? Explore and enjoy.

What precisely is wrong with your laptop? There is no way BIOS can go “bad”. That really doesn’t make any sense.

If the BIOS in your computer is not working, your computer will be unable to perform the POST (power on self-test) and will be unable to load any operating system. You need to flash the BIOS, which you can do yourself if you’re comfortable with computers (Google, if you don’t know how to do it). Otherwise, you’ll need to have it professionally repaired.

no it will not turn your computer into ubuntu. it wont cost any more money only the internet speed maybe slightly slower when you have both pc’s on internet at same time.

The Laptop that you think has windows should run with you router, no it would not “turn” you laptop into Ubuntu however there is no reason you would not if you wanted could load Ubuntu on to it…

You did not say which acer laptop you are using. If you mean the netbook you might do better with a special remix made especially for the netbook. See the first link below.
If your acer is a “regular” full sized laptop the latest version of ubuntu will work fine. You can use the livecd to see how everything works before installation.

On the task bar, click the START buttin, in the search box type in msconfig. When it comes up select the Boot tab, then select Ubuntu and click delete. Select your Vista OS and make sure it’s the default OS.

Now it sould boot Vista automatically, yet you still have Ubuntu as a back up OS

There are lots of different settings in msconfig, don’t screw them up!

You cannot uninstall Ubuntu from Windows because it is not under Window’s control. You can use fdisk from the command prompt to delete Ubuntu’s partition, format the partition as ntfs and use it as your D: drive or whatever, or you can use a third party program like partition magic or a live gparted disk to delete Ubuntu and extend the Windows partition over it. If you still have the Ubuntu CD you can use it. Just boot from it, go to system-administrtation-gparted and delete the ext3 or 4 partition and swap then resize the ntfs one untill it covers the disk.

Ubuntu installation is not a great issue. At first install it in the C: drive, which will get formatted into Ext4. Then format the other partitions to Ext4 after installation. Get the netbook version for you laptop…

If it is older computer, use Mint Linux version 5 to start out with. It is Ubuntu based and some files have been included that Ubunt won’t install because they are proprietary hardware drivers. It will boot as a LiveCD so this will allow you to see if it can be installed. Linux does not work on all computers for one reason or another. When you choose to install you can choose use the whole partition or share it with Linux, but that may require you to use the install to create the partition, which makes the computer dual boot. You can use the desktop or the netbook versions, the netbook version loads less files, but you can add just as many files as the desktop uses.

Go to http://www.ubuntu.com to download the OS. That will be an iso file to create an installation disc. Make sure you get the readme file too and read that first to check for any hardware conflicts you may have. To install you’ll use the cd to boot. In your system bios set it to boot from a cd first then reboot the machine with the installation cd in the drive. Then follow the instructions from the readme and what should be on screen too to install as a second OS, thereby preserving Windows 7 and installing Ubuntu. Then you can chose what OS to load upon boot up.

okay so i have my laptop, it has the 8.10 version of ubuntu on it and i would like to take it off. I have the windows disk but something is keeping the autorun prompt from automatically running. how do i reformat without the disk?

Get a partition manager software that can be burned/ran from a CD, burn it, and use that to format the partition with Ubuntu on it.

You want Ubuntu completely gone, there is nothing on the laptop that you need and you want to re-install Windows, is that correct?
Boot from the Windows CD and follow the prompts but when you get to selecting the partition on the hard drive you want to delete the existing partition and start fresh creating a new partition and formatting it with the NTFS file system.

Take the hard drive out, connnect it to an external harddrive enclosure, connnect it to your desktop or another Laptop, go to my computer, find you hard drive, rightclick and choose format. That is how I always go about doing it.

Load up vista or xp.
Download a freeware call easyBCD
run the program and click “manage bootloader”
check “reinstall the Vista bootloader”
click the button “Write MBR”
the status bar at the bottom will say “done” or “complete”
press windows button and R (or startmenu > Run)
run should pop up
type in: diskmgmt.msc
a partions manager will pop up
Find all unnamed partions (there should be two or three)
right-click (NOT ON ANYTHING THAT HAS A NAME
delete
Keep on doing untill you cannot delete again (partion should be deleted about 2 times, making it unallocated or free)
right click primary partion
click extend
keep clicking OK (windows automaticly sets it up)
restart!

Now your done. Hope this helps!

Boot your Windows CD up and have it remove the current partition, then have it partition NTSf, when it completes that process it will Install your Windows. It’s that simple. I am not sure why you are trying to use autorun.

wait all the other answers assume that ubuntu is the only OS on the computer. are you dual booting with windows? If so you may used the wubi installation method to install ubuntu from within windows. if thats the case you can easily remove ubuntu by booting into windows and simply going to add/remove programs to remove it like any other application.

the real question is why are you wanting to remove ubuntu? You should do a fresh install of 9.10 instead of 8.10

If you have Ubuntu 8.04 up to anything higher then you go with deb. for 9.04. IF it’s 9.04 or higher you go with apt. for ubuntu 9.04

If you had Ubuntu for less than a year go with the apt. If longer, go with the .deb.

Actually, you can just try the apt. If your version of Ubuntu’s too old it won’t know what to do with it and give you an error, if it’s new enough it’ll install it and add Adobe’s repository, so your flash will always be kept up to date.

Alternatively, you can just open up a terminal (you can find it in menu bar on the upper left side of the screen under applications>accessories>terminal) and type in “sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer” without the quotes. This will install it for you, but I do not know if it’ll surely be the latest version.

Create a Virtual Machine and install Vista in the VM.

If you have no problem deleting everything on your hard drive(backup everything you want to keep), you can simply boot from an Ubuntu CD and use the Disk Tool or GParted from Administration menu to repartition and format your hard drive. Make sure to create at least one primary partition and format it with NTFS.

It’s really odd, plus I’m using the “install in windows” thingy. (From a ubuntu disc, not wubi.) Ubuntu’s great but I would like to use the internet in my room and not have to bring my laptop near the desktop computer.

I’m assuming you are using a wireless router.. It would appear that it has a weak connection, and its simply unable to receive data while not close to it.

most likely your laptops Wireless LAN card is quite old and it cant detect signal from too far away maybe you just need to download the latest drivers for your wireless lan card if you know the name and model of it and what company it belongs to so that you can visit that website and click help/support section and download latest drivers

It should be possible. If you go to NetworkManager’s “Edit Connections”

Click on a connection, either eth0 or the wireless network you’re connected to and go to edit under IPv4 Settings and the method dropdown. There is an option for “shared to other computers”.

I’ve other ever done this the other way around – shared a wired connection over a wireless network, but this way should work too.

I think for your case the wireless network should be set to Automatic (DHCP) or whatever it is now and the eth0 connection (ethernet cable to the pc) should be “Shared to other computers”.

Sorry that’s bit vague it’s been a while since I did it. Hopefully that’s enough info for you to get it working.

First you need to make sure your boot order is set to boot from the CD drive first. This is done in the BIOS.

To access the BIOS you will press a certain key before you get to the windows loading screen. This key is usually F10, F2 or Del. Look for a message that says “Press “key” to enter setup” it may say BIOS instead of setup, but the message will be similar. Once inside the BIOS you will need to check your boot order. All BIOS programs are setup differently, so you will need to look for something that pertains to how your computer boots. Make sure you set your CD/DVD drive to the number one position. This link will help you with setting the boot order.

Once you set the boot order correctly, restart your computer with your UBUNTU Disc inside your drive. you should see a message that says press any key to boot from CD. Press a key and your Ubuntu OS should take over from there.

I have the Ultimate Edition of Ubuntu installed to my laptop, which means pretty much everything works with it. However, I haven’t been able to get the Wireless Internet to work. I have a Linksys external wireless card. The Ultimate edition comes with several popular wireless detection programs and I’ve used all of them, but so far no good. Internet works fine when I plug directly in with ethernet.
Any suggestions? I’ll provide updates as I try what you guys think. Thanks!

Ubuntu has had a long troubled history with Wifi unfortunately. I’m currently using an old HP zt3000 with Ubuntu. It will not pick up the wireless at college.. won’t even recognize it.

Some people have had good results by installing WiCD. (go to applications, software center, search for WiCD, click install)

if that doesn’t work here’s a troubleshooting page. I’ve also seen a list of hardware with known interface issues that might narrow down whether you ~can~ get it working

We bought a small Dell mini laptop online recently and it came with the Linux operating system, Ubuntu. Many know the limitations of programs not being compatible with Linux (Ubuntu), and this being the reason we would like to switch to Windows XP. Is it possible? If so, then please describe how. Sure, boot from Windows CD/DVD and install Windows.

1) Find XP drivers for all the hardware for XP on Dell’s site. (If you can’t, you’re finished here.)

2) Buy XP (if you can find a legitimate copy for sale – if you don’t buy a legitimate activation key, the installation stops working in 30 days) and install it.

3) Install all the drivers.

In addition to the first two answers you may also want to make sure the laptop meets the minimum hardware requirements (CPU speed and RAM amount) for Windows XP, or the recommended hardware levels or above for optimal performance.

For the easiest installation you should format the hard drive before a clean installation of Windows XP. Make sure you backup any documents or data you want to keep to a flash drive or external hard drive before starting.

Since Dell sells the mini with both winddws and linux I would suggest that you contact Dell and ask them for the best way to do the switch.

laptop coolers.I am setting up a new desktop, and it has an ethernet card. My laptop has wireless and ethernet. I can’t find the desktop’s USB, so I want to temporarily attach it to my laptop through ehternet and then use the wireless on the laptop to create a network bridge. They are both running Ubuntu 9.10. Is this possible to do?

Yes, this is possible and relatively straight forward:

1. You’ll need a cross-over cable (or a switch) between the ethernet ports of the computers.

2. You’ll need to create on both computers static IP configurations for the ethernet ports in a subnet that is separate from the wireless subnet (e.g. 192.168.99.1 on the laptop and 192.168.99.2 on the desktop if wireless is 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x). In the desktop configuration, use the laptops ethernet IP address as the gateway.

3. On the laptop, you’ll net to enable IP masquerading so that traffic from the ethernet port gets forwarded to the wireless port. Instructions for how to do that are here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Internet/ConnectionSharing

Wow, that’s a tough one. I’m not sure if that’s possible. What I would try is to create a peer to peer connection and see if it works on Ubuntu. If it doesn’t, I’m out of ideas.

I was wondering how to access a windows desktop from a ubuntu laptop. I just downloaded SSH on my ubuntu laptop from the terminal, and then I installed Putty on my windows machine. After that, I typed in the WAN IP address of my laptop, but then I get an error saying “network error: connection refused”. Could someone please help me and tell me how to fix this problem.

You should not mess with the Firewall because Ubuntu already comes shipped with no open ports.
Ubuntu Linux is supplied with powerful firewall technology known as iptables built-in, & if you mess with the default settings, you could actually make it less secure by accidentally opening ports etc.
However, if you still want to mess with your firewall, then you can install the front end program UFW or Firestarter, you can find these programs in Ubuntu Software Center

Install the gufw firewall from the software repositories using your Synaptic package manager. Then find it from the menus and click it on. By default all the internet ports in Ubuntu are closed, but enabling the gufw firewall makes them more “stealthy”.

You need a virus scanner pretty much only if you forward Windows files to your Windows-using friends. Viruses made for Windows do not work in Linux.

You can use clamav with the clamtk graphical front-end for this (is in the repositories), or you can download and install BitDefender for Unices (you can get a free key for a year for it; after one year, you can just request a new free key).

Browser-wise, use Firefox. It has plenty of security-related add-ons. I recommend Adblock Plus, BetterPrivacy, HTTPS-Everywhere (A GNU add-on, not in Firefox add-ons) and NoScript.

laptop financing.I just installed the new release of Ubuntu on my laptop and now whenever I close the laptop it won’t wake back up when I want to use it again. I still want it to go into stand-by when I close the lid in order to conserve batteries, but when i open it back up it won’t wake back up. Or, you could go into the power options and try to configure it there.. I’m not sure how you can keep it from freezing in standby without turning off standby.. but you can try.
I don’t know anything about ubuntu, but try going into the most advanced looking mode of whatever your control panel is, and look for something about power conservation or power options. there SHOULD be something in there about how ubuntu reacts to different stimuli, such as closing the lid or laying idle for x minutes. try fooling around with those, there might be something about what mode (hibernate vs standby) it goes into when one closes the lid, Try switching between the modes, they’re both powersavers, and one might not cause the computer to freeze like that.

I will be 17 by the time I would graduate early. I will have more than enough credits by my junior year, and find my senior year as going to be a waste. I want to attend a college to become an Elementary Teacher. I’ve already done some practice teaching (tutoring 1-on-1, and teaching a whole class) and I am positive it’s the job for me. I love kids, I love teaching. At college, I also plan to spend the majority of my time in Wellness Housing (smoke/alcohol/drug-free), in order to live a more positive and healthier life style. I currently volunteer at an Elem. School and with a Substance Abuse Prevention program, both working with kids.

i am confident. i am ready to do this. all i need to know what are others pros and cons to early college life?
also, if any scholarship search websites are known, i’d love to have them, too.

The con of early graduation is maturity level. Are you mature enough and have enough discipline to attend college? Are you ready to sacrifice? Your friends will be in high school and you will be in college with new people and experiences and your friends will not be able to relate.

The pro is you may graduate a year early from college.

Your high school counselor has scholarship info or you can also contact your future college financial aid officer.

Ther are no cons– except that your friends will be jealous– get out of HS as soon as you can and you’ll get to start your life and career ahead of all ofyour friends.
