Improved Single Click UltraVNC is No Longer Slow in Windows Vista

In some conditions is it necessary for the user to initiate the help-desk connection. Perhaps they are behind a firewall, at a hotel, or some other hard to reach location. In this case UltraVNC's SingleClick tool is very useful. However, since Microsoft has released more advanced operating systems such as Windows Vista the tool has ran very slow. I offer a solution to this problem.

Up to this point the only solution I had to offer was including a "hacking tool" in the self extracting package, and then launching it before the user initiated the connection. This worked well until many anti-viruses identified the tool and alerted the user that it may be unsafe. To be perfectly clear I have seen a very popular anti-virus attack UltraVNC for being some sort of hacking tool. So be sure that the user understands why anti-virus software would falsely warn them about the tools you are using.

I spent some time working on a solution that eliminates the need for the hacking tool. The solution was to run a rundll32 command and shutdown a system service, and then undo the changes after the connection was closed.

Please note that I only tested this once on a Windows Vista machine, but I believe that it will work on a Windows 7 machine. You may download the configuration files and compiler here. If it doesn't work on Windows 7 you could always have the user turn off all visual styles using the advanced performance settings.

To configure the tool unzip the file you have downloaded and open the SC_VNC_Files folder. The folder contains a file named "helpdesk.txt". Open this file and change the server to your IP address and modifiy the information accordingly. When you are finished configuring the tool, run the Compile.bat file to make "Single_Click.exe"

How to Run a Headless Virtual Machine

When running a virtual machine (using VirtualBox) on top of your primary system sometimes you might wish for the window to just go away. In the event that you want to log into the machine you could just use Remote Desktop instead of having a window open at all times. I searched the web looking for bits and pieces of information on how to "close VirtualBox but keep [the] machine running." Eventually I came up with a solution that I thought was acceptable.

My solution ended up being a special VB script. One that could even be launched on startup via a simple shortcut. Before you create your script you may want some background on starting VirtualBox in headless mode. VBoxHeadless.exe is a command line application that allows you to start a virtual machine that you have already created without a graphical interface. In a default installation VBoxHeadless.exe is located in "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\". Below I have shown you the proper usage for version 3.2.2. You may also download this information from my box.net account.

   -s, -startvm, --startvm [name|uuid]   Start given VM (required argument)

                                         server can bind to. Use a dash between

So in my case I am launching a virtual machine I have named "Debain", without quotes of course. My command would be:

C:\Progra~1\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxHeadless.exe -s Debian

Now if I were to launch that from a regular "Run" box in windows it would show me a black DOS-like box. If your goal is to get rid of that black box then you should continue. Still reading? Glad to hear it. Below I have copied some code from a Yahoo Answers post.

Copy that code into a blank notepad document and save it as "HIDECMDWINDOW.vbs". The file extension must be ".VBS". Replace the "H:\test.bat" with your command to launch "VBoxHeadless.exe". My code looks like this:

When you open the VB script, VBoxHeadless.exe will open in the background (you will not receive feedback). Your computer may ask you to allow port 3389 to open. If it does this is OK, because it is your remote desktop port.

Now if you want to log into the virtual machine using remote desktop all you have to do is open Remote Desktop Connection and type in local host as your server. (127.0.0.1 or localhost)

Amazon EC2 Needs Automated Power Management

I have been experimenting with Amazon EC2 for the last few days. It turns out Amazon wants its users to leave their servers running at all hours of the day. Imagine if you were a small business and have recently expanded to the cloud. You may only need your cloud server to run from 7:30am to 5:30pm during normal weekdays. Amazon EC2 had no form of automated power management. It seems that the developers of the product have gotten caught up in making new features work, but have forgotten about how the customer feels about paying per hour.

Samsung Highlight Reset Settings

How-to reset all of the settings on a Samsung Highlight.*

1. On the main screen push the Phone button in the bottom left hand corner.

2. Now you see your keypad. Type in the following "pass phrase": *#6984125*#

3. Now you should see a screen you likely haven't seen before. On this menu choose Pre-configuration.

4. Now you'll be prompted with a box that says Confirm, and Cancel below it. Click the empty box, and it will give you a screen to type. Here you should type the following "code": *#73561*#

5. Choose Done.

6. Choose Confirm.

7. Your phone will restart itself and the settings will be replaced with the Factory Defaults.

* I am not responsible for the actions you preform. A forum for resetting a Samsung Highlight without a password, became ever so useful when I wanted to reset the settings on a Samsung Highlight. Can't Use Your Own Domain With Weebly

HELP! I'm having trouble publishing my new eebly site under my owned domain. When I go to my domain I see a weebly 404 web page saying that everything is configured properly and to go republish. I go to republish in the settings tab and it says "domain currently in use by another website." I have written to weebly support numerous times without response. What will solve my issue?

That was taken from getsatisfaction.com where a user of Weebly could not use their own domain name with the free website. Someone replied to their response, and told them to visit Weebly through this special link. I tried it, and it resolved my same problem when I tried to use my free co.cc domain with them.

I have noticed that there is nothing really special about that link. I believe that the really problem lies in what has been type in the domain box. The example domain weebly gives you on the right hand side of the input box includes a www preceding the domain name. Try putting a www. in front of your domain, and see what happens. If you are using a co.cc domain name, make sure that you have added a CNAME record for the www.

UltraVNC's SingleClick is a great product. Sadly out of the box it does not work with Windows Vista, or Windows 7. To make it work on the newer operating systems I spent some time looking around for a solution. I found this thread and on that thread I found a link to this website. At that website they host a version of UltraVNC's SingleClick that works with Vista. The problem is that it is hosted as a .rar, and I would prefer a zip. I tried downloaded the rar file and found its contents scrambled. Below I have a zip file that is unscrambled. I have not tested this software on Windows 7, so if anyone does please share in the form of a comment.
Note: Box.net flagged the installer, so I had to put a password on the zip. The password to open the file is 'password' without the single quotes.

Activating a Preloaded Trial of Microsoft Word

For PC some users, Microsoft Office is already installed on their computer in the form of a 60 Free Trail. When this free trail runs out it is possible to reactivate the software without having to insert a disk. For some, their computer doesn't have a CD/DVD Drive on their computer, and they must have another solution.

If you would like to activate a pre-installed version of Microsoft Office with a product key you have acquired, you are in the right place.

If you do not have Microsoft Office already installed on your computer, but have a product key; you can download an install Microsoft Office for free. Of course, you will still have to have an activation key, but the download is free.

If you're running Windows Vista, or Windows 7 the solution is relatively the same.

1. First, find your product key. This is the 25 digit number/letter combination that it located on the box, or was given to you by some other means.

2. Click on the start button or the Windows Orb as some call it. It is the little round icon in the bottom left hand corner for most people.

3. In the search bar type Microsoft Office. Before you finish type you will probably see it pop up. Start one of the office products, and it will ask you to activate your product.

4. Type in your product key.

5. Your product should now be activated and ready to use!

Acer 5810TZ System Restore

Before I begin I must first warn you about what occurs when you perform a system recovery from a recovery partition. When you boot into a recovery partition and run the process ALL DATA WILL BE DESTROYED. The only data that will be left is what was on the computer when it was shipped from the factory. This process deleted everything and starts over. If you do not understand this process I do not recommend you to continue as it will result in lost data when done incorrectly.

Before starting a system recovery you should back up all important information. There are multiple ways to back up your important files, and I will not highlight them here at this time. You may want to buy a removable hard drive to copy all of your file onto, I use a Toshbia 500G External Hard Drive available on Amazon. When confronted with a broken Acer 5810TZ, you may find it necessary to remove everything and start from scratch. To start a system recovery from an Acer 5810TZ you should press
CTRL + F10
repeatedly at the BIOS screen (this is the name for that initial screen you see before you see the graphical windows loading bar). If you make it to the graphic windows loading bar, you have gone too far, and should start over. Do not confuse the screen that says "Windows is loading files" (black and white), with the graphical screen.

If you see a screen that is black and white and says it is loading the file, you're in the right place.

After it loads you will see a graphical recovery counsel. Follow the instruction to which type of restore you would like to perform. Make your decision wisely. Once you have selected your recovery option, you will have to wait for it to do its business, be patient, because if you aren't you computer may not see life ever again. After you have completed your recovery process you will be confronted with a computer that has its factory defaults in store. This is a good thing; however I do recommend you follow my guide to optimizing a PC. It is geared toward Windows XP, but some of the information does translate to newer versions of windows.

Restore an Eee PC Without Using An External DVD Drive

myeeeguides.wordpress.com has a great how-to on how-to run the Eee PC's System Recovery disk from a flash drive. Note that you cannot use Windows Vista or Windows 7 to make the USB drive, this how-to only works with windows XP. The process is very simple, and once you've created the USB drive to act as your restore disk it is mostly automated.

Without the how-to you need to purchase a external DVD drive, or you can't restore your computer. Before considering the idea of restoring your computer from scratch try restoring your computer to a privous restore date using system restore.

Email Scams – Ten Simple Steps To Avoiding Them

According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) email scams also known as phishing attacks claim more than 2,000 victims each day from more than 75 million phishing emails that are sent each day. The APWG also claims that these email scams steal close to $1 billion a year from its victims.

Phishing (pronounced fishing), is online identity theft that uses spoof emails, fraudulent websites and crimeware to trick unsuspecting internet users into providing financial data, credit card numbers, social security numbers, account logins and passwords, etc.

These email scams (spoof email) mimic legitimate companies such as banks, credit card companies, investing companies, paypal, ebay, etc. These fraudulent emails look like they are from the "real" company; many even include the real company's logo. Generally these emails try to convey a sense of urgency; if you don't correct this problem your account will be suspended.

The spoof email may state that there is a problem with your account and if you do not log in and update your information your account may be suspended, restricted, terminated, or something similar. They may also request user name, passwords, credit card numbers, social security numbers, etc.

Protecting yourself against phishing and email scams.

1. Do not give out personal or financial information through an email request.

2. Always log on to your sensitive accounts by opening a new browser and typing the actual URL directly into the address bar. For example, if you receive a suspected phishing email from ebay, open a new browser and type "www.ebay.com" in the browser bar.

3. Do not click on any link in a suspected phishing email.

4. Do not open any attachments in a suspected email scam.

5. Only use a secure website to submit sensitive data. A secure sites' address will begin with https:// instead of http://

6. Check the activity of your online accounts regularly and check for fraudulent activity.

7. Make sure your browser is up to date and all security patches are installed.

8. Report phishing and spoof email to: reportphishing@antiphishing.com , spam@uce.gov, and forward the email to the company that is being spoofed.

9. Keep your PC protected with updated anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and a firewall.

10. You may want to install an anti-phishing toolbar such as Earthlink ScamBlocker which alerts you before you visit a known fraudulent website. It's free and can be downloaded at http://www.earthlink.net/earthlinktoolbar

As email scams are on the rise and with the consequences being identity theft, it is important that you increase your awareness and learn to protect yourself from these fraudulent attacks. With more than 75 million phishing emails being sent every day it's only a matter of time before you receive one. Getting Games
You could waste a lot of time trying to make all of your own games. I would discourage that anyway. For a start, find some free game that are allowed to be re-hosted like the ones in this list.

Don't download someone's game and host it on your site unless you know that you're allowed to. That is a fast way to get into trouble. People spent a lot of time on their games, and they sometimes limit who get to host them.

Making the Website
If you don't know some simple HTML you might need to learn some before you continue. If you find yourself as a computer person, you will not regret learning it. I mostly taught myself, but I've taken formal classes in recent years. To be clear, I did not use the skills I learned in college in this project. I've been capable of doing this since I was 13 years old.

Now that you have downloaded your games, you need to put them on a website. Instead of designing you own, or paying someone else to do it. Try grabbing a free css template from freecsstemplates.org. They offer great staring points for your websites, and they're free!

Alternatively you can buy a template from someone like freecsstemplates.com, but I assume that you want to do this on the cheap end.

Stay Away From eMachines

I recently had a go with eMachine's Support, and while the customer service representative was nice, the company was not.

Basically I asked to purchase the recovery media, and they said they don't offer it anymore. If I were you (although I'm not ;) ) I would stay away from eMachines. I've always had horrible luck with their hardware, and they usually don't have very well put together software distributions (opinion). To avoid writing something inaccurate here is the conversation I had with them.

Me:
I can I go about ordering the recovery cd's for my machine. I don't have a 22 digit serial number, and I haven't registered this machine. I don't remember exactly when I purchased it either.

eMachines:
Dear Justin Kubicek,

Thank you for contacting eMachines. I apologize for the inconvenience that you have experienced. Recovery media is no longer available for the serial number you entered. Please purchase a retail version of the Operating System to proceed further.

Using RSS to Deliver A Dynamic Flickr Screen Saver

How to Remove "Security Tool"

Security Tool is a fake antivirus/anti-spyware tool that warns you about infections you don't have. In order to remove it you'll need something like MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, or any other legitimate malware removal program. I used the free version of MalwareBytes' today to remove Security Tool. But before ran the tool I did the following:
I turned of the PC.
Powered on the PC.
I pressed F8 repeatably until I got a black screen with white text that asks about boot options I choose "Safe Mode with Networking."
Then I installed MalwareBytes from a jumpdrive.

Welcome to speeding up Windows XP. I'll just get right into it.

First off I take no responsibilities in what you do with this document. If you use it to create a mob that is your doing. If you damage a computer, you damaged it, not me. Please take responsibility for your own actions.

First thing you could do is turn off some visual effects.

Click Start
Right Click on My Computer
Choose Properties.
Uncheck the the one's you don't need to use.

I normally only leave the following:
Show Translucent Rectangle
Smooth edges on screen fonts
Smooth-scroll list boxes
Use a background image for each folder type
Use common tasks in folders
Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop
Use visual styles on windows and buttons

Second thing you can do is clean your registry.

Download a program called CCleaner, you can find it here. Ignore the stuff about donating money, you don't have to unless you want to.

After you download and install CCleaner, open it.
Click on the Registry tab

Click Scan for Issues.
When that is done, click Fix Selected Issues.
I'll ask you if you want to back them up, that sounds like a great idea.
After you save your backup, click Fix all Issues.

Since you have CCleaner you can clean off some gunk from your system.

This one is a little free style, click on the Cleaner tab
Then choose anything what you want to get rid of.
Don't delete anything that might be useful.

Another thing you can do is remove things from startup.

CCleaner has a tool for this under the Tools tab
Then Startup

But! a better thing to do is to note which programs start with your computer, and learn how to change each of those program's startup options off. Each program is different.

Lastly you can uninstall programs that you will never use.

You can use CCleaner once again to do this.
Go to the Tools tab
Then go to Uninstall
Then click on what you want to get rid of and choose Run Uninstaller

The best part about CCleaner is that if the uninstaller doesn't run correctly you can use CCleaner to delete the entry manually and go manually remove the files yourself.
After uninstalling programs I recommend running another Registry clean if you know what you're doing.

Obviously, I am missing a lot of things you could do here, you choose defragment your system, use other tools to speed up your machine, or you could even add more ram. The point is that I see people everyday without these simple fixes, and well, I thought I would be nice to tell the world.
