A victim of crime has the right to be treated with respect and fairness. Victims have rights such as the right to confidentiality, the right to offer and receive information, the right to protection, the right to assistance, the right to compensation and the right to restitution. These rights should be defended. These were the words of advice from Gauteng Regional Head Emily Dhlamini during the Victims Charter Launch at Orlando East Community Hall on 29 October.

Accordingly, we adopted the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as our route in laying to rest the conflicts of the past. What we could not do, was to say let the by-gones be by-gones, without having sufficiently addressed these heinous crimes of our past.

The Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-related Information Act, 2002 regulates various aspects relating to communications. It, among others, prohibits the interception of communications, except in terms of the provisions of the Act. The Act allows for the interception of communications when there are reasonable grounds to believe that a serious offence has been or will be committed and upon the issuing of an interception direction by a designated judge.

Seven schools were visited in commemoration of the child protection week. The campaign also aimed to inform the learners about their rights as victims of crime and how the Criminal Justice System operates.

The Bill is intended to empower the national government to further regulate the executive authority of municipalities in respect of local government matters listed in Part B of Schedule 4 and Part B of Schedule 5 to the Constitution when it is necessary to achieve regional efficiencies and economies of scale in respect of a specific municipal function.
