How to Watch Star Wars on Command Prompt using Telnet

This is old but gold ~ If you not already know, there is a complete copy of Star Wars done entirely in ASCII characters out there that you can watch using Command Prompt in the Windows operating system (or any OS that supports Telnet). The only thing that you need is an internet connection.

To watch it on Windows XP, Mac OS X and Linux

1. Go to Start > Run. (for Windows users)
2. Type Telnet Towel.blinkenlights.nl and press Enter.
3. Users of Mac OS X and Linux can directly execute this code in the terminal window.

On Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8

Telnet is turned off by default in the latest versions of Windows. To enable it, go to Control Panel > Program And Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off > Tick > Telnet Client > Ok. Then:-

1. Go to Start, Search in Windows Vista and Windows 7. On Windows 8, open the main Start page
2. Type Telnet Towel.blinkenlights.nl and press Enter

OR open Command Prompt and type Telnet Towel.blinkenlights.nl

If you done watching, you can turn the Telnet off.

Add a Custom Error 404 Page in Blogspot - Page Not Found

Creating a 404 Error landing page is a best practice not only to a search engine but also for your website visitor. A customize 404 error page is proven helpful and friendly rather than the standard browser-issued version. Below are the defaults in what we can see in blogspot.

“Sorry, the page you were looking for in this blog does not exist.”

What is a 404 error page?

A 404 error is an HTTP status code expected as a result when a website is unable to return a given request or there is no URL to deliver. Technically, an Error 404 is a client-side error; implying that the error is your mistake, either because you got the URL wrong or the page has been moved or removed from the website. Another possibility is if a website has moved a page or resource but did so without redirecting the old URL to the new one. When that happens, you'll receive a 404 error instead of being automatically routed to the new page.

Well to simplify the whole thing, it’s just the way the servers tell you that you’re out of luck, the webpage you wanted is broken or missing, and you can’t see it, not now or maybe not ever. So go away!. The reason doesn’t matter.

Other than that, this issue matters to your SEO efforts. If the search engine spiders cannot find a default 404 page on your site, you’ve just thrown a dead end in front of them and they have no way to get over. Search engines can’t hit the Back button or use the other advanced features on your Web site. All they can do is follow links. If they come across a bad link and you don’t give them anywhere else to go, they’ll leave your site. This may result in entire sections of your site not being indexed. Creating a custom 404 page that includes links to other pages on your site helps prevent this from happening. You have to give the engines something to follow.

How to Add a Custom Error Page (Page Not Found) on Blogger?

Here I will share with you how to create your own landing page for 404 Error Page on blogspot like a pro.

[1] Go to Blogger Dashboard >> Select Blog >> Select Settings tab >> Search Preferences

A lifetime of Amazing Generosity - Meet 98-year-old Dobri Dobrev

Some people call him an ‘Angel Among People’. This is the story of a man, who has nothing, but a good heart. Thus, he manages to help a significant number of poor people, children, orphanages and churches.

Dobri Dobrev, 98-year-old Bulgarian WWII veteran, lost his hearing long time ago during the war. This, however, does not stop him to do what he does.

Each and every day he walks more than 10 kilometers from his village, in his homemade clothes and leather shoes to Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. There he spends the entire day begging for money. He greets everyone, kisses their hands, reads their lips when they tell him something and with his children’s sparkling blue eyes wishes everyone good health and God’s grace. He is not a beggar, though. At least not one who begs for himself.

It was only recently discovered that he has donated every penny he has collected - over 40,000 Euros ($52 000) for the restoration of decaying Bulgarian churches, monasteries and the utility bills of orphanages, while living entirely off his monthly state pension of 80 Euros ($103) and the kindness of others.

Just to know, in Bulgarian almost every name means something. ‘Dobro’ means ‘good’, so Dobri Dobrev pretty much translates to Good Goody.

The World’s Largest Ice Cave In Salzburg, Austria

The Eisriesenwelt (German for "World of the Ice Giants") is a natural limestone ice cave located in Werfen, Austria, about 40 km south of Salzburg. It is extending more than 42km and though only the first kilometer is covered in ice, it is still the largest of its kind .

The cave is open from May to October, visited by approximately 200,000 tourists every year and only the first kilometer of the cave are allowed to be explored.

Eisriesenwelt Cave was formed by the Salzach river, which flowed through the mountain eroding passageways. The ice formations in the cave were formed by thawing snow which drained into the cave and froze during winter. Since the entrance to the cave is open year-round, chilly winter winds blow into the cave and freeze the snow inside. In summer, a cold wind from inside the cave blows toward the entrance and prevents the formations from melting.

Eisriesenwelt was discovered by Anton Posselt, a natural scientist from Salzburg, in 1879. Before his discovery, the cave was known only to locals, who, believing that it was an entrance to Hell, refused to explore it. One year later he published a detailed report of his discovery in a mountaineering magazine. And then later in 1912, a group of several expeditions into the cave was led by Alexander von Mörk, a speleologist from Salzburg, which were soon followed by other explorers.

How to Set Up a Custom Domain on Blogger for Name.com

So this is step by step tutorial on how to set a custom domain to your Blogger account. Noted that this tutorial is for the domain that was purchase from Name.com, but does not necessarily useless for others domain registrar.

Here we go:-

1. Open your Blogger account, click on Settings and choose Basic

2. Then click Add a custom domain under Blog Address field in Publishing section.
3. Click Switch to advanced settings.
4. Put your domain name on the field and click Save.

Note: Blogger only accepts non-naked domains in the sign-up process; otherwise most probably resulting in error. Naked domain for example ~ yourdomain.com. So you have to put a subdomain as a prefix for example, www.yourdomain.com or blog.yourdomain.com

5. Once this process done, you will see two CNAME records which should be seen as shown in the picture below

6. Now login to your Name.com Account and click the domain name

7. On the right hand side under Control Panel in the Domain Management, click DNS Record Management

8. So this is a DNS Management panel for Name.com

9.Now using the data earlier, fill in the field and click Add Record.

Type	Host	Answer	TTL
CNAME	www	ghs.google.com	1800
CNAME	geXXXXXXXhzur	gv-XXXXXX.domainverify.googlehosted.com	1800

10. Now again add another 4 DNS record with the following value and hit Add Record

11. Now lastly go back to your Blogger dashboard earlier and click save.

And that's it! It may take up to a couple of hours for Blogger to verify the settings created for your domain.

How to Remove a Domain from Google Apps

Before, I had my domain hosted on paid hosting for about a year. Later on, I decided to use Blogger.com for hosting. Anyway, I got the domain from Name.com for about $8.99 after a coupon discount. For me, Name.com is my first choice for a Domain Name Registration. The service is great and as for right now I already have two domain from this site.

Ok, back to the topic at hand. After purchasing the domain and hosted it on paid hosting, I have enable the Google Apps services provided by Name.com. But because of that, I got an error warning that says *Another blog or Google Site is already using this address when I want to set up the domain on Blogger.com. It means that I had to disable or remove the Google Apps first before I can proceed to the next step.

Noted that, when you remove your domain from Google Apps, any information you had created while using Google Apps will be erased. And you will not be able to access any of this information again. So, think carefully before you decided to delete them, make sure that this is what you want...

Here is the steps on how to remove your domain from Google Apps

1. Login to the Google Apps cPanel: https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/yourdomain.com
2. Click on Domain settings
3. Click Account information
4. Then click Delete Google Apps for yourdomain.com

5. After that, the last final notification will ask you to confirm your action. Then you can check the checkbox and click the button to delete the domain from Google Apps.

Note: You may want to change or delete the unnecessary record in your domain DNS Management panel.

After this process is done, you can now custom your domain on Blogger.com as usual and later set up your Google Apps again from scratch if you want.

Massive Solar Storms Trigger Stunning Northern Lights

These are some magnificiant pictures and videos of auroras that was taken due to the event of a coronal mass ejection, or CME, that hit our planet earlier this week. A CME is a cloud of superheated gas and charged particles hurled off the sun. The experts said that a strong solar flare had erupted from an active region on the sun triggered the strongest solar storm experienced since October 2003.

When a CME hits Earth, the charged solar particles can interact with gases in our atmosphere to produce the northern and southern lights [National Geographic].

Facts : Airplanes had to change routes, and the power grid and satellites were affected.

Fujitsu Lifebook 2013 is a concept device, design by Prashant Chandra in a competition held by Fujitsu in which attracted more than 3500 designers around the world. Lifebook 2013 has been shortlisted in the top 100 in the competition.

Well enough talk, look just how well did Prashant transforming his idea to life. It is simply brilliant..

The proposed Lifebook is a laptop computer concept based on the principle of “shared hardware”. Currently a lot of hardware is wasted when we use separate devices, as there is often a lot of “repeat” of data stored and features. For example if I have my songs on my music player, why do I have to block the same amount of storage on my laptop? Similarly, if I have a processor sitting in my tablet, why can it not also run/assist my laptop? If I have a fully functional camera with its own memory and image processing power, why do I need to have it repeated in my laptop? ~ Prashant Chandra

How to Host Your Blogger Scripts and Files on Google Code

Blogger tweaks or even adding a new widget to blogger template constantly require the use of JavaScript and CSS for customization. Hosting a JavaScript and CSS proven to be better practices than installing it directly to the HTML. This way, the load time will be more faster and more cleaner HTML template.

One of the free option to host a files is by using Google Code. Google Code runs a Project Hosting service that provides revision control offering Subversion, Mercurial and Git, an issue tracker, a wiki for documentation, and a file download feature [Wiki]. This means, with the 200MB file limit, you can upload any file - JavaScript, Image, Video, CSS, Documents etc with no restriction.

Before we go further, you must know that Google Code Project Hosting is a shared hosting rather than regular web hosting services. So all projects hosted on Google Code are Open Source, and are available for anyone to view or download.

Various licenses are used for the files served by Project Hosting including GNU General Public License (GPL), MIT License etc.

How To Host Your Files On Google Code

Step 1 : Go to Google Code Project Hosting and fill the required fields. Choose License as MIT License and Version Control System as Mercurial and press Create Project. [More on how to choose a Version Control System here]

Step 2 : Go to Downloads tabs and then click the New download button.

Step 3 : Now fill all the necessary field and select the file you want to upload and click the Submit file button.

If you're hosting a JavaScript file and want to get the source url, just click on on the files listed..

Now, right click the link highlighted in red and copy the source link..

Lastly, if you wanna make a change, make a new download or delete files, just go to Google Code homepage and click the My favorites link on the top-right corner and select your projects.

To whom who enjoyed the previous sequel of the movie - Journey To The Center Of The Earth (2008) or a hardcore fan of Jules Verne - the author, must be truly anticipate this upcoming movie on cinema this February (Malaysia - 19 January 2012).

The Mysterious Island is a story based on novel by Jules Verne, published in 1874 - basicly tells the adventures of five Americans on an uncharted island in the South Pacific [More info on Wiki]. While in the movie, Sean Anderson(Josh Hutcherson) partners with his mom's boyfriend(Dwayne Johnson) on a mission to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on a mythical island.

How to Add Facebook Send Button on Blogger

Aside from Like button, Facebook now has introduce new features in its collection - the Send button. Its allow users to send your blog post to their friend in diffrent way. The option are :-

send message to the inbox of their facebook friends
send to the group wall of any Facebook group they are a member of
and send as an email to any email address

The message will include a link to the URL specified in the send button, along with a title, image, and short description of the link.

The best thing is, we can integrate it with the Like button in a single attribute. Apparently this only works with the XFBML version, so if you have the Like button on iframe before, you have to change it intirely. But not to worry, its very easy.

Now here is how to do it..

1. The Facebook Send button code in XFBML (if you want to add it seperately)

Step 3 : Paste the code after the above code

4. Customize (button style)

And last but not least, use this if you want to make your button appear only in your post page and not in your index page.

James Potter by G. Norman Lippert

I believe that anyone who watched Harry Potter have read the books somehow in order to get a clear view on the story. Sort of.. i guess. Nevertheless, I for my own finished all J.K Rowling's books in the Harry Potter series and feel at loss because it already end. But recently I had an encounter with some rather interesting books and you know what, seems like the stories is back, now with Harry's son, James Potter as the protagonist. But wait, I thought you should know that the author of this new sequel of James Potter is not J.K Rowling, obviously. It is written by one computer programmer, G. Norman Lippert. Rowling had threatened legal action against him but somehow dismissed her threat after Lippert offered Rowling an advance copy of the novel (according to rumour).

Well I guess that can't be help since the story is not bad at all (my personal opinion). So far I have finished the first book and like it. The novel first appeared online in early November 2007 and till date had three sequel on the series. The stories build up around Harry boy's, James and start with what Rowling last books left off, which is when Harry send his sons off to Hogwarts by Hogwarts Express in the Platform Nine and Three Quarters of King’s Cross station. In the first book, the story expand along with James's adventures with his Merlin conspiracy and his daily life at Hogwarts. The story also developed pretty well with a new kind of dimension/direction entirely. Somehow Lippert trying to merge it with history and make it more global like. The story mention a witch hunt in the Western world that took place in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, a story of how the nineteen eighty-four Quidditch World Cup was held with a typhoon off the coast of Japan and how the crystal ball had been special made from China. Also about the flying carpet by the Asian wizarding communities and all. But the punching line of this book was the awakening of the greatest wizard of the old, Merlin..

Zombie Ants

A fungus from the stalk of four distinct species of Ophiocordyceps camponoti-balzani found in the Brazilian rain forest which was originally thought to be a single species, called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis turn out can infect an ant, take over its brain, and then kill the insect once it moves to a location ideal for the fungi to grow and spread their spores. The study state that this cryptic cycle has been going on for at least 48 million years.

The most amazing thing about this is that just before its death, the ant will crawl down towards the underside of the leaf and perform a 'death grip' around the leaf central vein and immobilising themselves thus provide the perfect condition for the fungus to release spores to create the next generation of ant-controlling fungi a.k.a Zombie Ants.

Tanjung Simpang Mengayau

Tanjung Simpang Mengayau or also known as Tips of Borneo is located in the district of Kudat, in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. Tourist can reach here about three and a half hours (or 215 kilometres) drive from Kota Kinabalu, and about 30 minutes from a the Town of Kudat. The tip is the meeting point of Sulu and South China Sea which called Tanjung Sampang Magazo in the Rungus dialect meaning a junction where a battle took place.

Tanjung = Foreland; Headland
Sampang = Junction
Magazo = Engage in Battle

Story state that Tips of Borneo is a historical place where the local warriors made a stand against invading pirates who always attack their village during 18th and 19th centuries.
According to historians, at once Ferdinand Magellan (Spanish Maritime Explorer) also stopped here for 42 days to repairs his ships on his way voyaging the globe.

The Most Cyber-Sociable Country : Malaysia

A study by research firm TNS revealed that Malaysia was at the top row on having the most friend on their social network. The research were conducted on 50,000 consumers in 46 countries based on their cyber-socializing habits. The result shows that Malaysian have in average 233 digital friend in their list while Japan have the fewest, 12 friends. Brazil follow closely at second place, 231 and Norway 217.

However, despite that, Malaysians were also the heaviest users of social networking sites, spending a nine hours per week on average communicating with their online friends. Russia came a close second, with its people spending an average 8.1 hours per week online, and Turkey third with 7.7 hours a week.

It was said that "being cyber-sociable doesn't necessarily mean you're particularly sociable in real life." Whether it is true or not, its hard to tell.

Control your Widget Placement with Conditional Tags

According to google, Conditional tags are Blogger template tags that allow us to discover even greater flexibility and better control over the template design. We call them conditional because they allow us to specify which parts of the template will appear under certain conditions. If in any chance you want to place a certain widget in the certain place in your blog like Home page, Post pages or Static page etc, this might become handy.

The simplest Conditional tags there is as state below (note that these are the old one. It might not work on most recent templates) :~

Since the default Facebook Share button does not fit well with the others social media share button in term of width like for example ~ Twitter, it is end up look not so good. But not to worry, there is a solution for this problem..

This might be a little bit late since Facebook box_count like button had been around for a while now, but let us look into it. Many people say that Facebook Share button may go down because of this, moreover now we can comment directly from Facebook like button. But i believe both of them have a specific uniqueness on their own. Here, we will be learning on how to add it in the Blogger.

Step 0 : In your Blogger dashboard Click 'Layout' ► 'Edit Html' ► 'Expand Widget Templates'. Don't forget to backup your template by download it first. Find <data:post.body/> and paste the code below right after it.

Google WebP to Replace JPEG

Google has announced a new image format WebP for web, which is replacing JPEG to allow web sites loading faster than before. Here is a part of the announcement :~

Most of the common image formats on the web today were established over a decade ago and are based on technology from around that time. Some engineers at Google decided to figure out if there was a way to further compress lossy images like JPEG to make them load faster, while still preserving quality and resolution. As part of this effort, we are releasing a developer preview of a new image format, WebP, that promises to significantly reduce the byte size of photos on the web, allowing web sites to load faster than before.

A friend posted "wake me up when september ends" in their Facebook wall just now thus make me thinking about the song. I never really care about the song's meaning before or any other song for that matter. Bur when I listen to the song something was bothering me. I was curios about the meaning of the song. So I google it and found something that obviously not new but i never heard of it before. Since today was a day when September ends, lets take a moment to look into it..

"Wake Me Up When September Ends" is a song by Green Day which released as fourth single from their seventh album, American Idiot. The single peaked at number six in the United States, becoming Green Day's second Top 10 single. It also peaked at number eight in Canada and the UK, while making number thirteen in Australia. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" has sold 1,652,000 copies as of May 2010 ~ Wikipedia.

There was once much debate regarding the meaning of this song, one of the most common initial beliefs being that it was about the events of 9/11. Taken a facts that, the song is dated September 10, and it is track 11 on the album. However, Billie Joe Armstrong has confirmed that the song was written as a memorial to his father, a jazz musician and truck driver, who died of esophageal cancer in 1982 when Armstrong was only ten years old.

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this about his father, who died of cancer on September 1st, 1982. At his father's funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie's room, Billie simply said, "Wake me up when September ends," hence the title.

The references to the amount of years is like so: When he says 7 years has gone so fast, he is talking about how Sweet Children (Green Day) formed almost exactly 7 years after the incident. And 20 years has gone so fast is an homage to when he wrote this song.
