Night Photography Tips with point and shoot camera

I carry camera around almost everywhere i go, either 'the 4 years back Canon dslr model' or my trusty point and shoot 'Canon ixus' (well..Canon is my favorite) or i carry both along.

Sometime,is not always the right situation that i can carry the bulky slr,so my point and shoot will be the alternative.

Some tips for my future reference about Point and Shoot (P & S) especially when to capture night photos without tripod.

1) Long Shutter speed

Luckily my Ixus have ability to adjust the shutter speed in M mode.Trust me, the result is better than auto night scene mode.

2) Used different shutter speed

As i remember,longer shutter speeds will bring in more light.

3) Find something sturdy

Without a tripod is hard to hold the camera when it come for 1 or 2 minute of shutter speed.Find something sturdy like table surface,boxes or anything. Stability is the priority.

4) Breath and squeeze

Keep the finger on the shutter release when taking a photo. Don’t attempt to remove it as it’ll likely cause minor shakes. Take it easy,breath normal and steady.

5) Fiddle with iso

Take manual mode of iso setting. Iso more than 400 will make the photo produce some fairly grainy shots. Lower is better,but remember to set in long shutter speed.

Being a girl,she is really into girly thing like doll,ballerina,kitchen set,princess,dress-up and so on.

Most of the time she play pretending with her doll. She was acting like her Mama, saying/acting some of the same things to the doll that i always said/did to her.

So damn cute...

I should encouraging Myza to play pretend because at the same time she is learning.

Dreamy

Step 1: First open any image
Step 2: Duplicate the layer, go to Layer> Duplicate or press Ctrl+J and change the blending mode of the new layer to Screen.
Step 3: Now add a layer mask to the top layer so go to Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All.
Step 4: Make sure the layer mask is activated. The thumbnail of the layer mask in the layer window should have a white border around it. If it does not, click on the thumbnail to activate the layer mask.
Step 5: With the layer mask activated, go to Image>
Apply Image and use these settings:

Step 6: Click on the thumbnail of the top layer to deactivate the layer mask. With the top layer selected, go to Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur. Make sure that the preview checkbox is checked and increase the radius slider until the desired effect is achieved.
Step 7: Add another layer mask but Photoshop will only allow one raster layer mask per layer. To get around this, simply group the layer so go to Layer> Group Layers or press Ctrl+G and add a layer mask go to Layer> Layer Mask> Reveal All, to the new group created.
Step 8: Click on the thumbnail of the new layer mask. With the layer mask selected, use the Apply Image so go to Image> Apply Image tool to apply the entire image to the layer mask and apply these settings:

Funny Eyes

Step 1: Open a photo.
Step 2: Create a new layer and rename the layer as "left eye".
Then draw a circle with the Eliptical Marquee Tool in the left eye of the cat while holding SHIFT key to get a perfect circle.
Step 3: Fill the selection with white color.
Now double click the "left eye" layer to choose Blending Options and use these settings:

Step 4: Create another layer and rename it as "left eye circle".
Then select the Eliptical Marquee Tool and draw a circle over the last circle a little smaller while holding SHIFT key.
Fill the background with color, eg color #2c0505.
Step 5: The left eye almost finished.
Duplicate both layers to make the right eye in the same way.
Move the layers to get the effect and finished.

Picnic

Having an indoor activities, might get bored sometimes.

Myza love outdoor,like we do,she is extremely excited when she know we going to take her for a walk. We love taking her to the park and watching her run and play around until she out of breath.

I had planned ahead to take Myza for picnic and prepared a branch (Fried kuew tiaw),some fruits, a couple cans of Nescafe-Guarana for me (for the drive),tit bits,small pail and net (the park has a crystal clear river which has alot of shrimp and small fish,the major reason why i bring Myza to the park)

That day was a beautiful and perfect morning for some fresh air!

To reach our picnic spot that day,approximately half and hour drive from our place. Since I hadn't been to the park in so long, I knew it would be an adventure for us plus it was Sunday,the park full with a lot of peoples.

I was pleased to find an area set up with large wooden tables and chairs. Not cozy,but convenient.

We unpacked the food and start eating once we got such a nice spot to eat.

After finished all our food,we strolled along and played game like cat-mouse,chase,tag,touch the trees/grass. Myza was super happy run around and scream.

The best part was catching shrimp and small fish at the shallow river. Myza was fascinated with the net once she watch me using the net to catch the shrimp and a lots of shrimp get caught on the net. I just let her do whatever she wanted to do. She had fun anyway and i can see excitement on her face. She had a good time even though she get wet and got no shrimp at all to put in our aquarium.

I just really happy and relieved that that weekend has turned out as good as it has. She is completely wiped out by the time we get home.

We are the food lover! this year,as for papa's birthday dinner we prefer for something that not too heavy, at the same time kids can enjoy too.

Where else a place nearby,have a cool,family oriented dining and at the same time have a night playground?

Well,at last we decided to have our celebration at Pulau Ketam Steamboat@Desa Parkcity,just a stone away from our house.

It was Saturday Night,the place was jam packed full with cars at parking lot plus the restaurant was really busy, we thought we would have to wait forever for a table, but we were pleasantly surprised when they seated us right away.

The service was quick and efficient,maybe because this restaurant had plenty of competent waiters and waitresses and our food was served right away.

How to enjoy dine out with kids

We loved dining out,sometime lil' bit tricky when a restaurant that we'd choose not so child-friendly restaurant.

There are a few tips and tricks to keep Myza happy while we dine out.

I must make sure that:

1) Pack a tricks for Myza before head off to restaurant. (usually i pack a book.pen,marker and some toys)

(Myza's happy face,on the way to our favorite restaurant)

2) Choose family oriented restaurant,forget the candle-lit ambience.

3) Order kid's menu and ask the waiter if the kitchen can prepare the kid's meal quickly/ if i bring over some cracker/nuts let her munch while wait for her meal.

4) If she getting restless,its time for a bag of tricks. (Myza love to draw)

5) Make sure Myza's drink preferably in a kid friendly cup, or a small glass.

(Lots of places completely ignore the kid and just bring a tall glass like this to the table)

6) Ask for separate set of silverware. (as a toddler, she wants to feed herself with utensils.)

7) A small plate for Myza.

8) Extra tissue. ( prepare for the mishap, spill, or mess).

From experience,i've learned to ask all of this up front,so i don't have to wait or flag down the waiter/waitress. Myza old enough,sometime she asks for these things by her own.

4th days of fasting month today. Hmm..another 26 days to go.

Myza is asleep in her bed,on the new soft Barbie pillow under her arm.

Already 9.30pm,i should sleep too because i need to wake up at 4am for Sahur (maybe beef soup,egg,salted fish and watermelon for Sahur meal tomorrow) but my stomach bit full. So i can't sleep rite now.

2) Our dad's day celebration

The food was terrible! (being honest ok) and the price? NOT WORTH IT!

I know my blog has been very dead,bored and plain,never been updating my blog because i'm either too tired or too lazy to do so. Time flies quite fast when i had actually lost track of time. I have a lot of things to be update but like i said,i'm too lazy.

Well, i'm having my break now.

Since H1N1 become more serious,better to lock up inside the house this weekend staying at home rotting and watching Tv.

We had a lot of eventful things that happened last month,now would like to do some photos post.

1) Pre Dad's day celebration

Pre-dad's day dinner with my uncle's family @ Island Red Cafe(IRC).

My uncle eagerly want us to have dinner there, BECAUSE he actually IRC's shareholder who are purposely bring us there to coax us to join the IRC marketing plan,in other word to join MLM. Because of the relationship,we joined as his downline by purchased a dine card worth, rm360.

I don't hate MLM neither do i like MLM. In most of MLM,sales is basically everything. I'm not into MLM because I personally do not have talent in sales. Before I reject the IRC marketing plan,i did listen to my uncle.

' Join as member for RM360, and directly bring the family to any IRC outlet (Lucky one of them just near by at our place) and dine in there, and you entitle for 15% discount if you pay by cash,once you get the IRC member card,will rebate directly from your account. Which mean,for rm360,you get rm300 meal voucher,RM60 for membership'

To be frank, we join it because of the '15% discount' and i love their toast,their variety of foods,the environment,free wi-fi and their coffee as i'm a coffee junkie and i love to eat. :)

Night Photography Tips

What are our tools in night photography?

1. Tripod. While not always necessary,a tripod will give the greatest flexibility to get the angles while keeping camera steady for those long exposures.

2. Wide-angle lenses.

3. A lens hood. To minimize lens flares from light entering at angles outsider the frame.

4. A flashlight. Sometimes want to draw attention to or simply lighten up an important part of the foreground which is too dark.

5. Our imagination. Tools lie all around us in everyday objects to help us make our work better in this; Used bicycle lamps, lampposts and newspaper boxes to get it done.

The same composition rules that apply to day apply to night, except with night we have our long exposures to take advantage of.

The beautiful leading lines of Vancouver’s Public Library make it a photogenic building any time of day, but the diminishing light and soft cast at night makes it an even more attractive subject. Notice the green lens flare in the top corner – this may have been avoided by removing the filter or having a faster shutter speed. The jury’s out. This was a 30 second exposure at f/22.

Water is your friend in night work. It seeps up colour, softens it and adds a charming glow to your images. 10 seconds at f/11.

Journey continue...After having the best nasi kerabu ever at somewhere near Batu Buruk (if i'm not mistaken) head off to our relative's house somewhere in Bukit Payong. (about 3 km from the town). I like the really 'kampung' surronding,blessed with natural landscape,sound (bird and cricket) and as well as natural river running tru the village.

Just a simple tutorial for my future reference. Turn the color photo to black and white using paint and color blending. I found out this method will preserve the detail unlike using the direct converter
Image >adjustment > black & white/desaturate.

a) Open the image and make sure the mode is RGB
Image > Mode > RGB colour.

b) Ctrl + Shift + N to create new layer and select the brush tool with an appropriate brush size + opacity and paint over the areas in gray color/other color. I have used #756f6f.

c) Change the blending option to color to maintain the detail.

• Give Myza a hug and say 'We Love her soooo much'
• Praise her whenever she did something good.
• Read & write with Myza for at least 30 minutes.
• Make a dictionary of new words & add to it.
• Count with Myza. (Lucky we stay in apartment,at least twice a day we count together)
• Share news with Myza. ( she loves to listen anything about my workday)
• Listen to music with Myza (Mostly in car,and we sing along especially 'Barbie Diamond castle's soundtrack'

And...because i love her damn much..nothing can compare with mom's milk...and she still become my lil baby...

I am a typical full-time working mom,and have my job at the office from 9am -6pm from Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm on Saturday,plus a part-time unpaid jobs at home as chief, dishwasher, laundress and housekeeper. AND the most IMPORTANT,I DON'T TRUST/ NEED MAID.

Dealing with my 24 hours seems very tricky. Almost everyday i like a chicken running around with my head cut off. There are too many things on my to-do list every day.Even my daily schedules are jam packed and not everything on my to-do list is getting done,BUT,the satisfaction of having things done by myself can't be describe by words.

I am so anal retentive when it comes to house cleaning/organize,even Myza's papa always call me a 'obsessive and compulsive psycho freak with vacuum seamlessly extended in my hand as he said i was born with it '. For me,tidiness and cleanliness is a virtue, and i do like having a clean and well-organized house everyday. I think my mental space is devoted every day to keeping things under control and sometime my life become miserable because of this. DAMN!

Here are a quick breakdown what i have to do to ensure my house in a good order:

1) Mop the kitchen floor, clean the wall, stove, condiment and seasoning jars,empty the food waste trash right after every single meal i cooked. I hate of grease-feel -floor,wall and seasoning jar and unpleasant smell.

2) Vacuum,scrub, polish, wash, dust, sanitize the floor,carpet,bedsheets, and entire corner of the house. I hate especially amounts of strands hair at the floor/bedsheets. ( I do vacuum almost everyday/alternate day,scrub/polish/sanitize once in 2 days especially bathrooms)

3) Laundry and ironing. (Bath towel on Monday,kitchen towel+doormat on Tuesday,white on Wednesday,color+house dresses on Thursday and Friday,bedsheets on Sunday/Saturday,curtain twice a week on Sunday,i do ironing everyday,included every single thing of Myza wore, Myza's papa shirts/his and my work clothes,pants,house dresses, and as well as underwear.)

4) Wipe/clean all fans,switches,door handles,furniture,cupboard,refrigerator and other hide-stuff on Sunday,once a week.

I've post my cleaning checklist on refrigerator, so that i can remember what i am supposed to do on what day because i think the checklist makes me easier to organize and manage my household chores stress free.

I like having my home organized, neat and clean everyday. I like when i come home from work,i can still smell the aromatherapy from the floor that i used to mop before leave to work.

My laziest Sunday,really dunno what to do this weekend,I tried to do something interesting like bring Myza to Sentul West for photo shoot. But again,i'm soooo lazy. But,there were nothing special than spent my weekend with my family at home:)

stressful week but i'd made it..

I wanted to post, since I had a very 'bad week' last week. The most stressful week for this year.

1) My brother have been engaged for 1 year and will getting married in June this year,but he cancel his wedd at the last moment,(he and his fiancee had a huge fight about dowry,to be specific,her fiancee ask for double amount at last minute) which mean, my family will losing a TON of money, most of preparation had been made for that particular date.

My bro's weed is canceled! which is fine for me. (i think he dun deserve to get married with F***ing a**hole gal,and thank god its canceled!) but likewise i just cannot understand the venom from her side (my bro x fiancee) who ask for huge amount of money from my brother and my family! HELLO!!!!

How on earth they can show their faces and ask the money from my family? what type of people are they?

***so sorry to my family,i really can't help them with 'money',but I'll be the shoulder to cry on.

2) I need to finish up 6 different designs/concept in 4 days. I crack my head almost everyday and night,at first,i couldn't give 100% commitment with this job,cuz Myza's papa had blocked the Internet access to my laptop,( we had an argument and not spoken to each other). I only can access thru Myza's pc which is using on-screen keyboard and the monitor is about 5 ft tall

*** at last,he called me when i was in the office,just one simple call, we back to normal again.(sometime,fighting can actually make our relationship stronger, closer, and better than ever),and also,manage to finish up the designs on time

We going to celebrate mother's day on second Sunday this month. Which is on 10th.

Well..i do love my mom, but never did/give her anything on that special day. As usual on this Mother's day,I'll send her a short sms,telling her that i love her very much, no matter what i have done in my life,i have put her through a lot,she is an inspiration to me. In fact, i appreciate her more each day. Miss u Mama...

How much do i love my mom? countless...and how much do i love my mother's earth?????What can i do to show my love to her?or did I hurt her.

I'm not try to be an environmentalist,because 'i'm not insensitive,but i just dun give a damn' kinda person, doesn't mean, i dun care and dun give a damn bout it.

I'd strange feeling when i heard this song and it happened when Myza tried to sing-along. Why not i try to educate Myza protecting Mother's Earth,from the lyric to reality.

But How???

For the sake of Mother Earth,we trying our best to:

1) Shut off the lights and water when we not using it
2) Use Jusco recycle bag whenever we buy our groceries, so we don't need to get plastic bags.
3) Take a speed showers. Reduce to 10 minute instead of 15 minute. (i'm trying ok...i'm the one who always take a long shower)
4) Recycle...recycle...anything we can,especially plastic bags,paper,
5) Encourage my clients,not just water feature,you must have green at your compound area.
6) Potty train Myza,reduce of diapers used.

Is that all?well..that what i could think for time being,maybe more list in 'How much do you love your mother part ii'
