Jordan has achieved the unprecedented distinction of winning not only the European KF2 title but also the British Championship in the same year. With some strategic racing, he secured enough points in the first Final to have some fun in the second race.

The Super One Series, the UK’s national championship, is run over seven rounds all over the country and the last round was last weekend at Fulbeck in Lincolnshire.

Jordan has truly seen the highs and lows of kart racing this season, ranging from his European win in France to suffering a broken collarbone at his very next race. Luckily recovering from the injury caused barely a blip in his national championship campaign and Jordan has now fulfilled both of his 2009 aims.

After impressive speed on the test days, Jordan took pole by 0.15s and was confident going into the first heat.

As Jordan says “we won the first heat after being knocked back to fifth at the start, so coming away from the track on Saturday my confidence was booming and things were looking promising.”

Overnight Jordan and his team Williams Motorsport finalized their plans for the next day’s racing.

“On Sunday morning in Practice we made some changes to the kart and we were once again the fastest by 1.5 tenths, so I was again very confident going into the second heat,” said Jordan.

“Jake Lloyd put up a good fight in the next heat as he needed to win because he didn’t finish Heat 1 so I settled for second so as not to cause any conflict and crash.”

“Then I started on pole for Final 1, took the lead and started to pull out a healthy gap and relax, but as I started to relax Lloyd hunted me down and overtook me quickly. I pounced back at the next corner and re-took the lead and tried to push on, but a slight mistake allowed Lloyd to re-take the lead so once again I settled for second as I only needed to finish in the top three to win the Championship.”

Next up was the second final, and Jordan didn’t need to take this one quite as seriously.

“Having already won the Championship after the first final, my aim was to go out in Final 2 and “have fun”… after the first corner I had fallen to third place. Then still on lap one, me and the leading group were defending our places so a lot of bumping was going on, so at the hairpin I moved aside and let all the drivers overtake me, so now I was in 16th place.”

“I let the leading bunch settle down then I got my head down and tried to carve through the traffic. I got into third place, setting the fastest lap by two tenths, but then a slight collision with me and the driver in second place allowed my teammate Shaun Carter to pip me on the line for the final podium position.”

The prize presentation will take place at the Autosport International show in the first week of January, but between now and then Jordan will be on a hunt for sponsorship to enable him to take the next step into car racing and on the road to Formula One.

Jordan was back with a bang at the weekend in the penultimate round of the British Championship at Larkhall in Scotland, where he won both points-scoring races.

Just three weeks ago Jordan was suffering from a broken collarbone sustained at the previous round in Northern Ireland but after laser treatment was hoping to be back on form to continue to lead the championship.

“We were very fast all day Friday, but didn’t do too many laps to try and save myself for the important parts such as Timed Qualifying and racing.”

“For the session before timed practice we put a new set of tyres on and we lost about 3 tenths, we then made some improvements to the kart for timed qualifying and put it on P2, not what we wanted but good enough.”

“In the first heat we finished 11th after a bad start and a crash later on, then in the second heat we finished second to Shaun (team mate Shaun Carter) after another bad start from the outside of the grid where we dropped back to sixth place.”

“In the first Final I started second, dropped back to third at the start and then crawled my way into the lead.”

“We then made an risky engine change for Final 2 but it paid off as we started on pole and led from start to finish with a comfortable lead, allowing me to treat the engine well on the last 7 laps.”

Jordan sensationally won the European KF2 Championship at Essay, France, after starting the Prefinal in 29th place and making up 22 places, then gaining another seven in the main Final.

Jordan sensationally won the European KF2 Championship at Essay, France, after starting the Prefinal in 29th place and making up 22 places, then gaining another seven in the main Final.

The weekend started with timed Qualifying on Friday afternoon where Jordan secured 17th overall, which gave him about seventh on the grid for his heats, which select the 34 finalists.

In the heats Jordan had some bad luck and in this highly competitive field he slipped back to 29th on the grid for the Prefinal.

But in the Prefinal his fortunes changed when he successfully negotiated a first-corner pile-up and came out in eighth. Another place made up gave Jordan seventh and a highly coveted inside starting position for the championship-deciding race.

“Qualifying 17th wasn’t great and after the heats I was 29th, but coming seventh in the Prefinal gave me confidence for the Final,” said Jordan.

When the Final started, there was another crash which he was also able to avoid, and he came out of the second corner second, although the leader Matteo Vigano (Italy) was already a long way off.

Halfway through, the race was neutralized with Slow signs and yellow flags, so the competitors drove round in formation while an accident was cleared.

“I was nervous while the yellows were out as I’d had a bit of luck at the start and I wasn’t sure if I was fast enough to be at the front. However, once the green flag drops the nerves always go,” said Jordan. It quickly became evident that he was fast enough and he pulled away from the group fighting for third. The race finished with Jordan still in second.

“When I got in to the pits someone shouted over the fence that there was a chance that I was European Champion as Vigano had taken the rolling start too quickly. It’s the best feeling in the world,” he described after the decision had been confirmed.

Jordan cites his team Williams Motorsport as the main influence on his success, and is planning to compete in the World Cup at Alcaniz in Spain next month, as well as continuing to defend his lead in the British Championship where there are two rounds to go.

Jordan took his fifth win in a row at Whilton Mill, Northamptonshire, at the weekend in the KF2 Super One national championship. He has retained the championship lead and is now just past the midway point of the 14-race (seven event) season.

At the start of the meeting, it looked as though there could be problems ahead, but typically Jordan and his Williams Motorsport team worked through it to retain their place at the head of the field.

“We struggled a bit for pace but made some changes for qualifying, and then put in three flying laps that were 1.7 tenths faster than second-placed driver Shaun Carter, which I was very pleased by.”

“Then in Heat 1 I won the race with Shaun finishing second. Over night we re-built the engine and the next day I had Heat 2, where we found ourselves down on power as the engine we re-built had developed a problem, but I nursed it home in a steady fifth place which gave me a front row start next to pole sitter Chris Lock.”

“In Final 1 I struggled early on in the race, dropping back to sixth, but then a crash happened and the Battenberg flag came out, which bunched all the drivers up as we had to drive round in single file. On the re-start I took full advantage of the situation, immediately gaining three places. Then I slowly caught Shaun Carter, overtaking him then I hunted down Jake Ball who I made a manouvre on two laps before the flag.”

The win also came as an extra birthday present to team boss Jason Williams.

“In Final 2 I was pretty confident after winning the first final but I knew I was lucky in the previous race, and as the lights went green I took the lead, immediately pulling a big gap. Seven laps into the race I was caught by Lock and James Godbehere as my tyres had worked too hard in the earlier parts of the race and the previous final. As the race settled down I was able to take care of my engine and bring it home in a good point scoring third.”

Jordan is now leading the championship by 37 points from Carter, his teammate at Williams, and Final 2 winner Lock.

The next round will be at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland on 23rd August, but before that is the final of the European Championship on 2nd August at Essay, France.

The European Championship is a one-off event for the 80 best young drivers in Europe, and after winning heats at the Qualifying event Jordan is in a good position to take an impressive result.

The third round of the Super One National Championship was held on a wet and dry weekend, not the ideal conditions for either driver or team manager, but Jordan Chamberlain overcame bad luck in the early stages of the meeting to take two wins at Rowrah in Cumbria to further strengthen his KF2 championship challenge.

As he explained, Rowrah was set to be one of the toughest but most enjoyable events of the year:

“I think Rowrah is undoubtedly one of the best circuits in the UK, I’m always excited to see it on the calendar as it has everything from downhill to uphill, fast corners and slow corners and it’s always interesting because the weather is usually unpredictable there. I finished second there last year in both Finals so I was looking to improve on that this year and I was pretty confident after my two wins at Shenington. I was also very confident after the quick lap times I had been producing in the wet and dry practice sessions.”

Driving a Williams Motorsport-prepared Tonykart, Jordan’s race day started off well in timed practice which was wet and Jordan qualified second, just 0.01s off pole.

“I was leading Heat 1 on dry tyres, had a healthy gap, but was caught out by a shower of rain that sent me into the tyre barrier. I ended up coming back on and crawling my way to 15th with a damaged kart, setting the fastest lap as well. I came second to Jake Ball in Heat 2 when I had a bad start and couldn’t make up lost ground but I set the fastest lap again.”

“In Final 1 I started seventh and by lap 6 I was in the lead and pulled out a gap where I was able to relax for the last five or six laps, and again I got the fastest lap. Then I went off pole in the second final, lost the lead on lap 2 to my team mate Shaun Carter, then after two laps I overtook him and immediately pulled away which continued until the flag.”

The team had worked hard all weekend with two karts to prepare - one for the wet and one for the dry. “A lot of credit goes to my dad (my mechanic) and Jason Williams, my team manager, not forgeting my engine builder Gordy at GFR Engines. I have to say the drive home to Wales was a lot more cheerful knowing we came away with a victory… the excitement of that kept me awake for the whole seven hour journey!”

Jordan will take a 10-point lead over Carter into the next round of the championship at Whilton Mill on 5th July, which will mark the halfway point of the championship. However, he also has his GCSEs to deal with which has prevented him from testing as much as he would have liked, but with only three exams left Jordan will soon be able to hit the track and work on the areas he needs to improve on.

Jordan hailed his double win in the Super One national karting championship at Shenington, Oxfordshire, as the best of his career, after a weekend where his only opposition came from within his own team. After the second race meeting out of seven in 2009, Jordan is now in the lead of the championship by four points.

“I was very confident leading up to the Shenington Super One as it is one of my favourite tracks and I always seem to do well there. We had been fast at the European Championship Qualifier at Angerville the week before and the engines were good so I was hoping for a result,” said the Williams Motorsport driver.

“We had been fast all Friday and Saturday morning, then when it came to timed qualifying I put it on pole by 8 hundredths over my team mate Shaun Carter, then I got my head down and won my first heat to end the day on a good note.”

The team were confident enough to experiment with the equipment, a Tonykart with a GFR-prepared TM engine. “On Sunday we used our second engine for Heat Two, which wasn’t as fast, but we still managed to get a win so I was pretty confident going into the finals,” explained Jordan.

He never looked in serious danger in the first points-scoring race - “I led from start to finish under pressure all the way from my team mate, but I held him off in the last few laps to take the win.”

Jordan had found even more speed for the second final, pulling clear of Carter, unrattled by a race held up by a startline crash. “We made some changes to the kart for the second final hoping to improve, and luckily enough it paid off and after the re-start (after the Slow flag, karting’s equivalent of the Safety Car) I managed to get a gap and get my head down, while the others behind were fighting, and I managed not to make any mistakes.”

A delighted Jordan exclaimed: “I’m over the moon now, I put this down as my best and biggest win by far!”

The next race will be the next round of the Super One on the first weekend of June, at Rowrah in Cumbria.

Broken reeds set me back to 7th place in qualifying which meant I had to start 5th in my heats. I got into the lead of the first heat and was knocked wide so finished 2nd, and was leading Heat 2 then the engine blew up…

I started 13th for Final 1 and got into fourth, then the engine started to slow down (we later found out that the piston ring broke) so I coasted it home in a steady 5th with the fastest lap.

Then I got smashed off at the first hairpin of the second final, couldnt get engine started at first then got going and came 10th. I was second fastest to Ash Sutton, who had fresh tyres as he didn’t get to complete more than five laps in qualifying, heats and Final 1!

Jordan’s career received a major boost this summer when Vroom and BMW Motorsport selected him to take part in a shootout to select the drivers they will support in their junior formula in 2008. And that’s not all – he also got an invite to the Italian Grand Prix as a VIP guest of the BMW-Sauber F1.

Jordan races in KF2 in the UK and abroad and is currently leading the Super One, but back in July he was awarded a free place on the licensing course to enable him to race in Formula BMW, the logical next move after karting.

Although Jordan had never driven a racing car before, he was selected as one of the ten best youngsters on the course who will return to the new F1 circuit of Valencia at the end of September to attempt to earn a place as one of the three official Formula BMW Juniors for 2009.

To qualify for the award, the young drivers must not only demonstrate their driving ability but must also pass various tests of their mental and motoring skills away from the car. These are elements that drivers often find it difficult to focus on but can be the decisive factors.

BMW’s innovative driver development scheme pays for a proportion of a season’s racing costs, which are estimated to top £250,000, and also puts the drivers through an intensive off-track programme of education about sponsorship, media awareness, and mental coaching.

This weekend’s trip to Monza was a resounding success, where Jordan had the chance to meet all the F1 drivers, and also went to a barbecue with the BMW team. He attracted the attention of several talent scouts and potential sponsors, and looking for funding is his top priority for the next few months. By all accounts he made a good impression and even found time to collect autographs, meeting Lewis Hamilton, Ron Dennis and Formula BMW graduate Sebastian Vettel.

Monza was also the venue for final two rounds of the Formula BMW Europe Championship, so Jordan had a close-up view of his aim for the next year as well as his first chance to watch F1 live, where his ultimate ambitions lie.

But it’s back down to earth with a bump as Jordan’s next time on track is for the last round of the Super One national championship on the first weekend of October, where he is neck-and-neck with Yorkshire driver Michael Simpson in one of the toughest fought championships for years.
