Designer Tidbits: Bonnie & Camille

The Fat Quarter Shop is so excited to welcome Little Miss darling Camille Roskelley of Bonnie & Camille to the Jolly Jabber. Bonnie & Camille’s latest fabric collection is Vintage Modern for Moda Fabrics. Their refreshing colors and prints always have us in a frenzy when we see them for the first time! This is our first time using their fabric for our Designer Mystery quilt, and it has become our favorite!

Q: What or who would you dedicate this Vintage Modern collection to? Do you have an inspiration board?
A: We both have inspiration boards in our sewing rooms. Mom's is neat and organized (and color coordinated!), but I have a hard time keeping mine tidy! Lots of drawings from the munchkins keep making it up there and never come down.

Q: What is your favorite project using this collection?
A: Of my mom's Vintage Modern projects I would have to say her Sweet Pea quilt. It shows off the prints really well too.

Of mine, probably my On a Whim quilt.

Q: If time travel became possible, what year would you want to be in?
A: 1950’s-ish. Love that whole era, the clothes, the cars, the little boys in bowties... very Mad Men-esque. Not to mention red and aqua (our favorite colors) were kind of a big deal back then. Or so I've heard. :-)

Q: If you had to change your first name what would you change it to?
A: I wouldn't change mine; I've always loved my name! Thanks Mom :-)

Q: What was your favorite childhood TV show?
A: Mine was probably The Wonder Years. I loved everything about that show. Whenever I catch old re-runs it makes me all teary. Love it. Mom's would probably be The Brady Bunch. It brought out her inner Marsha Brady.

Q: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
A: I'm not sure, but maybe the most memorable was when I bumped into Jerry Stiller in the grocery store when I was living in Nantucket. It was right after Zoolander had come out and I wanted to say "That's what I'm talkin' about!" Don't worry, I didn't. My mom helped Donny Osmond once when she worked in a toy store in the 80's. It was quite possibly the best moment of her whole life.

Q: What is your favorite App to play on your phone?
A: I absolutely love Draw Something, but haven't had time for it lately with all the sewing for Quilt Market. Mom would say "What's an app?" ;-)

Q: If you could marry a technology, what would it be?
A: My iPhone, hands down. It's my right arm, can't live without it! My mom's would have to be my dad. He's super tech savvy and keeps all the technology over there up and running. He's a keeper!

Designer Tidbits: Jamie Wood

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Jamie Wood to the Jolly Jabber. Jamie’s latest fabric collection is City Streets from Clothworks Fabrics.

Q: What or who would you dedicate this City Streets collection to? Do you have an inspiration board?
A: My focus is to design collections that are boy-friendly. I have two spunky little boys, ages 6 and 3 that keep the inspiration flowing around my house. Each of the prints are inspired by them.

I love to sew with pretty flowers and soft feminine colors for myself but when it comes to my kids, I've got to have bright, cheerful, rough-and-tumble designs that match their personalities. They love to look at my designs and they always tell me what they like best.

I do not use an inspiration board. I work mostly digitally so I gather inspirational images and put them in a folder on my computer and refer to them regularly for sparks of creativity. I like the idea of a board though. Maybe I will try that too.

Q: What is your favorite project using this collection?
A: I designed a quilt pattern that will be published in the July issue of Easy Quilts. I am not allowed to show you the whole quilt but here is a sneak peek.

That is the one and only project I have made with City Streets so far. The sample yardage for the quilt is the only fabric I have gotten my hands on so I am anxious to get more so I can make more fun things.

Q: If time travel became possible, what year would you want to be in?
A: This is a tricky question. Of course, I would only do this if I could bring my entire family along with me.

If I could travel in time, I would definitely go back, not forward. I would like to go back to the pioneer days and live on a farm with cows, sheep, chickens and pigs, and have a huge garden where we could grow our own food. Maybe we would even travel by horse and buggy instead of a car. I would like to make all of the clothes for the family and cook meals from scratch. Am I crazy?

Q: If you had to change your first name what would you change it to?
A: I used to wish I could change my name to Molly when I was a little girl. Now I am pretty fond of my own name, Jamie.

Q: What was your favorite childhood TV show?
A: Oh my! I don’t think I could choose a favorite. There were so many good shows back then. Most of which were family centered, unlike today.

Q: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
A: I am wracking my brain trying to think if I have ever met a famous person. The fact is I don’t think that I have.

Q: What is your favorite App to play on your phone?
A: Angry Birds. We have all versions of Angry Birds at our house. We all play it. We have them on my phone, our Nook, and our iPad. It is a very sad state of affairs, really. Haha!

Q: If you could marry a technology, what would it be?
A: I prefer my hubby to be of the human variety. :o)

Designer Tidbits: Tula Pink

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Tula Pink to the Jolly Jabber. Tula Pink’s latest fabric collection is Nightshade from Free Spirit Fabrics.

Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Nightshade collection?
A: I knew it was time for me to tackle Halloween. I love the idea of an old mysterious family with closets full of secrets, big spooky mansions and the kind of dark elegance that comes with the territory. I live in an area with a lot of history and I'm always struck by the giant creepy houses out here that haven't been lived in for ages. My design process usually starts with a story and a mood. I make sure each print lives up to that original narrative.

Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A: If Nightshade had a soundtrack I think it would be a series of noises like creaking doors, rattling chains, wind whistling through the trees and distant footsteps. There might be a barely audible victrola playing in the background or someone practicing violin down the hall.

Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite (can only pick one!)?
A: The main print with the portraits, called Coven, is artistically the most complex. I fell in love with characters as I was creating them. I thought about their stories and who they are which influenced the details in each portrait. I love telling stories and that print has the most narrative in it.

Q: If this collection had a scent to it, what would it be?
A: If Nightshade had a scent it would be called #9. The bearer of the scent would have the uncanny ability to attract people from up to 100 yards away. One whiff and you would be putty in their hands. The vapor alone would bring civilization to its knees. It would be sold exclusively on the black market.

Q: Can you give us a sneak-peek of your next fabric collection?
A: If Nightshade is my dark side then my next collection is definitely my light side. My next collection is all sugar and spice and sunshine. I am crazy excited about both collections. The new collection debuted at Spring International Quilt Market. It's called The Birds and the Bees the image is the palette for the collection.

Q: If you had a mascot, what animal would it be?
A: If I had a mascot it would totally be a turtle. If I was out walking around and I had an idea I could stop right there, retreat into my shell and get to work. I would be the happiest little fabric designer on earth.

Q: Who is your favorite celebrity?
A: I don't have a television and the only magazines I get are art related. The idea of celebrities in a general sense is pretty lost on me. I wouldn't even know where to begin with a "favorite". That being said, I don't live in a cave. I think that Lady Gaga is a huge freak and that's pretty fascinating to me. Also, I can't walk in high heels so anyone who can do that successfully is pretty impressive. Wigs are also entertaining so I guess if that is my criteria then Ru Paul would also be a contender and maybe Carmen Miranda (fruit hats? amazing!).

Q: If we were making a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
A: Jessica Rabbit. My hair is darker though so she would have to have to change that. I hope she would be up for it; she does seem like kind of a diva. I would like to be a spy in this movie, who designs fabric to relax after the high speed car chases and international espionage.

Q: Who is your favorite fabric designer not including yourself?
A: I respect a lot of different designers for completely different reasons. I am drawn to designers who have their own point of view and an almost obsessive passion for their craft. My favorite designer that is living today would probably be Marian Bantjes or Tauba Auerbach. Both of them play with typography and pattern in a completely unique way which I find mesmerizing. I would love to see what either of them would do if asked to design fabric.

Quilt Market Spring 2012: Day 2

Can you believe how fast the last 72 hours have gone by?! It's already the end of Day 2, and Market will soon be coming to a close for us (we take off for Texas tomorrow). We will be sad to see the end of it, but we feel so fortunate to have been a part of this! And we are so, so appreciative of y'all following along and experiencing Market right by our side! It has truly been an amazingly gorgeous and creative weekend! We can't wait to show you all the great stuff we saw today...and you probably can't wait either! Quilt Market Spring 2012: Day 1

Wow! Market after Market we are amazed by all the creativity and energy that literally keeps the convention centers buzzing! And this Spring is no exception! There is so much to see and it is all absolutely spectacular! Forgive us if our eyes bulge out of our heads, but seriously, just take a look at these photos from today! (And be sure to make it to the end of the post because we're going to have ANOTHER awesome giveaway!)

Willow by My Mind's Eye for Riley Blake Designs is an absolutely stunning collection full of muted greens and perfect greys.

We are absolutely loving what everyone is doing with the Riley Blake Chevron collection! Don't even try to tell me that's not amazing!

Our very own Stephanie with Carina Gardner of Riley Blake Designs. Her latest collection, Song Bird, can be seen on our Coming Soon page--it's adorable!!

How hilariously creepy is this butler?! No matter where we went it seemed like his eyes were always following us, telling us to pick up his rulers!

As the end of our first full day in Kansas City comes to a close, we can look back and safely say that today was awesome! Although it all seems like a bit of a blur, Schoolhouse was absolutely amazing this year! We wish you could have been here with us to hear all the great speakers and see all the adorable projects, but to tide you over, we'll just show you some of the highlights from today:

That's us pumped for our first day of to school (this year)!

Lonni Rossi of Andover Fabrics presented her new line French Twist with a little twist - a bustier!

In love with this quilt by Tula Pink and the quilting by Angela Walters.

Jane Sassaman was presenting her book, Patchwork Sassaman Style, coming out soon. The book shows how much the actual patterns in the fabric can make so much of a quilt without doing much piecing.

Doug Leko of Antler Quilt Design showed up in our lives last market and we quickly fell in love with his patterns. He is releasing a few new ones this Market but even more exciting for him, and maybe shocking for us, he is about to graduate high school next week!

Here is a designer we all know and love, Julie Herman, presenting a quilt in her new book Skip the Borders due out in August 2012.

Michael Miller has been creating their color story collections like Retro Basics, Auqa Red, Sorbet, Citron Grey, well you get the idea, and here they are displaying their beautiful mood boards. Plenty of inspiration for new prints! #lovingcolor!

And here is a little more color - great quilt using Kona Cotton Solids featured in C&T Publishing's book, We Love Color, coming soon to FQS!

The lovely Denyse Schmidt presenting her line, Chicopee, for Free Spirit Fabric Fabrics, coming soon. If it's anything like Flea Market Fancy, we're sure to love it!

Sarah Jane presenting her ubber cute line Out to Sea for Michael Miller. Her collection was inspired by her family and kids, who are "a family of mermaids" (as in they love swimming).

The once called Bonnie Blue Quilts but now Red Crinoline Quilts showed off their Freedom Rings Block of the Month. Have you signed up for this one yet? It starts in October of this year!

The Moda designers lining up to present at Schoolhouse. First up, the adorable Sandy Gervais, the oldest (and I don't mean in age) Moda designer! Moda surprised us with the fact they are coming out with Mini Charm Squares, aka Candy, so each of the designers showed us projects they made with their collection's "candy" precut. Here are a few!

The crowds were literally unbelievable but waiting in line is always worth it!

It's that time of year again--International Quilt Market! And to be honest with ya'll, we could not be more excited! After a quick flight, we arrived in Kansas City early this evening and have been settling in, making sure to take it easy so we can be well rested for the next few days!

Designer Tidbits: Ellen Luckett Baker

The Fat Quarter Shop is so excited to welcome Ellen Luckett Baker for the first time to the Jolly Jabber. Ellen’s debut fabric collection for Moda Fabrics is Quilt Blocks.

Q: What or who would you dedicate this collection to? Do you have an inspiration board?
A: Well, I guess this Quilt Blocks collection was inspired by my interest in geometry, so I'd consider my junior high geometry teacher but she wasn't very nice. She had a little plastic toy hammer that she would bop kids on the head with if they got the answer wrong. Unfortunately I gave a lot of incorrect answers. So let's say I'd dedicate it to my daughters. My use of pink and purple was definitely inspired by them -- colors I never would have used before they were born.

I'm not even organized enough to have an inspiration board outside of my head. Sometimes I tape things onto the wall, but mostly I do this with my own work to stare at it for days and make millions of tiny changes. I'm a master of indecision.

Q: What is your favorite project using this collection?
A: I love what Katy from Fat Quarterly did. I think seeing what people make will prove to be the most exciting part of this fabric design process.

Q: If time travel became possible, what year would you want to be in?
A: I don't feel much nostalgia for the past as I'm pretty sure we're better off now. But I might like to live in Jane Austen's world of the early 1800s, but only for a few days.

Q: If you had to change your first name what would you change it to?
A: Snooki. I think it suits me perfectly.

Q: What was your favorite childhood TV show?
A: Three's Company. You just never knew what trouble those crazy kids would get into next.

Q: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
A: Jon Stewart. These days it's tough for me to stay up to catch his show.

Q: What is your favorite App to play on your phone?
A: I'm old-fashioned and do not have apps on my phone. Just use it to check e-mail, talk and now I've finally entered the brave new world of texting.

Q: If you could marry a technology, what would it be?
A: Well, I'm married to an IT Manager, so I've pretty much done that. He's constantly hacking things.

It's Sew Emma Spotlight: Out in the Wild

Hello quilters! I am back to showcase one of my newest patterns, Out in the Wild!

I have wanted to do a fun chevron-happy pattern for a while, and I am so pleased with the results! Our pattern has instructions for crib and lap-sized quilts as well as a coordinating 18” throw pillow. You might get addicted and make all three!

This pattern is especially great for small coordinate prints you love. The possibilities for it go on and on. We have done our cover quilts in Play Date, and the bright limes and pinks are fabulous, but it is not limited to children’s fabrics at all! Imagine it in feedsack prints or go to the polar opposite with contemporary flair.

Designer Tidbits: Sheri Berry

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Sheri McCulley Seibold of Sheri Berry to the Jolly Jabber. Sheri’s latest fabric collection is Costume Clubhouse from Riley Blake Designs.

Q: What or who would you dedicate this collection to? Do you have an inspiration board?
A: I don’t make up physical inspiration boards for collections, but my studio is filled with old products and bits of commercial art that inspire me. The feeling for these characters, which debuted in the earlier fabric collections called “Trick or Treat Street” and “Costume Club,” was inspired by classic animation like Casper the Friendly Ghost, Felix the Cat, and “The Great Pumpkin.” So I dedicate this collection to everyone who, like me, prefers their Halloween to be sweet and innocent—not scary.

Q: What is your favorite project using this collection?
A: One of the panels in this collection is designed to create bunting or a hanging banner, that spells out “Happy Halloween” with a character on each pennant. It can be used for seasonal decoration or actual party décor. In my earlier fabric collections with these characters, they were out trick or treating. In this series they’re inside the “Clubhouse” for a traditional Halloween party where kids dress up in classic costumes like a witch, a skeleton, and a pirate, and play traditional games like bob for apples. In fact, I created Costume Clubhouse paper crafting collections for Lettering Delights that play on these same themes, with games and decorations that coordinate with all these fabrics.

Q: If time travel became possible, what year would you want to be in?
A: As they say in “Back to the Future,” I’d love to be “safe and sound back in good old 1955.” Actually, I love the styles of everything in America from about 1945 to about 1965— all of which was fading right around the time I came on the scene.

Q: If you had to change your first name what would you change it to?
A: If I HAD to change my first name, I’d probably go with “Stephanie,” my best friend from childhood.

Q: What was your favorite childhood TV show?
A: I always loved “Bewitched,” especially the opening titles that had Samantha and Darren as cartoons flying around on a broom, complete with sparkly stars and swirls of stardust against a romantic night-time sky. I hope people get the same feeling of fun and romance from Costume Clubhouse and the two collections with the same characters before it.

Q: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
A: Martha Stewart is probably the most current celebrity I’ve met. However, as a grade-schooler I met then-vice-president Gerald Ford, and our picture was in the paper. And when we lived in a small town in Michigan in the late 1980s we would occasionally bump into Muhammad Ali, who had a home nearby.

Q: What is your favorite App to play on your phone?
A: In order to keep up the pace of art production I need to keep my licensees cranking out products, I leave the smart-phone apps to my kids and focus on the main programs on my Mac: Illustrator and Photoshop. My cell phone is not too smart, and its main use is rather unconventional these days: Calling people and talking to them.

Q: If you could marry a technology, what would it be?
A: When it comes to technology, I’m rather Amish at heart. But I actually did “marry technology” in the form of a husband who works in the tech field and we now have two tech-minded kids. If I didn’t need a computer to create my designs, I’d be happy to go back to an era where the technology centered around light switches, running water, and rotary phones.

Quilt Market Spring 2012: Pre-Market

We are probably wayyy more excited than we should be for this Spring's International Quilt Market! Wait, what am I saying? There's no such thing as TOO excited! In a few short days we will be hopping on a plane and heading over to Kansas City and we hope you are as pumped as we are! There are literally SO MANY great things in store in the next couple of days! We can't wait to drool over, I mean see, some lovely new fabric collections, projects, patterns and oh so much more! And there's an extra special treat for us, too, because we will be displaying some of our pride and joy...that's right...our very own It's Sew Emma quilts will be on display!

Q: What or who would you dedicate this collection to? Do you have an inspiration board?
A: Maasai Mara is dedicated to those who appreciate Ikat & Global fusion but don't want to spend high-end designer prices on it. Our collection is affordable and fun, allowing the trendy consumer to swap things in and out of their home without breaking the bank.

Q: What is your favorite project using this collection?
A: The quilt from our latest Maasai Mara advertisement. I'd put that on my bed.

Q: If time travel became possible, what year would you want to be in?
A: I have to agree with Jamie. It would be wonderful to be able to go back and be a kid again in the 80's! But I'd also love to go to the 16th or 17th century for a day or two purely for fashion reasons.

Q: If you had to change your first name what would you change it to?
A: Straw (my maiden name) because everyone calls me that anyway!

Q: What was your favorite childhood TV show?
A: Jetsons, Fraggle Rock, and Kids Incorporated.

Q: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
A: Although I didn't get to speak to her, I worked with a floral designer on a Martha Stewart photo shoot for Macy's a few years ago. I was able to gawk in admiration at Martha but I didn't dare say anything!

Q: What is your favorite App to play on your phone?
A: Draw Something - it has instantly replaced Words with Friends!

Q: If you could marry a technology, what would it be?
A: I think the answer would have to be my iPhone. I honestly don't know how I did anything without it. I order groceries, check-in to my gym, and buy a coffee with it!

It's Sew Emma Spotlight: Tumbling Blocks

Last week we introduced our newest series of little patterns, our "Little P" patterns! So far they have been very well received, with plenty of oohs, aahs and squeals at how cute they are!

Tumbling Blocks is the quilt that launched it all.

For a long time I've been wanting to design super easy quilts that are interesting and show the many different ways to use fat quarters (totally appropriate for us, I'd say!). Just as this thought process was going, we were shown the Vintage Baby line by Lori Whitlock from Riley Blake Designs, and I went nutso over it. This fabric completely and utterly screams Kimberly. So precious, sweet and light with adorable prints – making it perfect for a small, simple quilt using fat quarters. See where I was going with this?

After a bit of churning in my mind, I drew out Tumbling Blocks – blocks and rows made multiple times and switched up. It blows our minds with adorable-ness, but anyone can do it! And it only uses a few fat quarters, one background and a binding, which you may already have laying around in your stash. Another bonus is that it took me less than four hours to make this sample. With four kiddos in the house, that is a very good thing! I knew I was onto something, and thus Little P’s were born!

While the cover quilt uses soft, frothy pastels, we have made other samples that use bright, vibrant fabrics that look equally awesome. Yep, they are made with the adorable Savanna Bop by Thomas Knauer!

Designer Tidbits: Dear Stella Fabrics

Q: What or who would you dedicate this collection to? Do you have an inspiration board?
A: Petal Pusher was inspired by a gorgeous photo of vibrant and colorful painted wildflowers on a white background, and of course STELLA loves fresh-cut flowers! It is dedicated to all the smart and creative people we surround ourselves with every day to lift ourselves higher in every way. I love how the clean colors and bold, modern design of Petal Pusher are floral without being fussy.

Q: What is your favorite project using this collection?
A: Eloise! We had our Eloise elephant pattern made up in Petal Pusher and it's so adorable, I feel the need to pet the fabric every time I walk by it!

Q: If time travel became possible, what year would you want to be in?
A: I'd love to go back to the early 1980's when I still believed that Santa Claus was real and my biggest problem was that my friends might not be able to come out and play that day.

Q: If you had to change your first name what would you change it to?
A: Superwoman, because some days I feel like I should have super powers to achieve everything on my to-do list!

Q: What was your favorite childhood TV show?
A: He-Man & She-Ra, Saved by the Bell (still is!) and I Love Lucy.

Q: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
A: Jerry Seinfeld sat behind us at a New York METS game last year. I could not tell you a thing that happened during that game, I spent the entire time turned around in my seat! Oh, also Jon Bon Jovi high-fived me at a concert once... does that count?

Q: What is your favorite App to play on your phone?
A: Draw Something - I take my illustrations very seriously and on the iPad you can really do some good work!

Q: If you could marry a technology, what would it be?
A: My iPad & my DSLR (digital super camera). I can't figure out how I lived before either of them.

Notion of the Month: Heat n Bond Batting Tape

Hey Jolly Jabbers, I am here today to tell you about one of my favorite new notions!

HeatnBond has released a Batting Tape.

With Quilt Market just around the corner I decided to make a new Jawbreaker Pillow for my booth.

When it came time to find batting I realized I had a lot of scraps 12" – 15" wide that were very long, but no scraps over 20" that were wide enough for the pillow panel.

Instead of cutting into a new piece of batting I decided to put 2 pieces together. I used to do this by sewing a zig zag across the two pieces, but it is so much easier with the batting tape! For my 20" pillow panel, I cut two pieces of batting 20" wide by about 13" tall.

Then I set my pillow panel aside so I didn’t accidently cut it! The next step is to trim the two ends of the batting that I needed to attach together. I trimmed off about 1/4" just to make sure each edge was perfectly straight.

Take them over to a pressing board and place them so they are just touching, but not overlapping. Then take the batting tape, rough side down, and roll it out to cover the seam.

The directions say to use a pressing cloth, but I didn't have one handy and it worked just fine for me without one.

Next, trim off the excess batting tape.

The directions explain that you can add batting tape to one or both sides. I'd probably do it to both unless I was making something very small like a placemat etc. So now, flip over the pieced batting and repeat on the other side.

I now have a piece of batting large enough for my pillow panel!

Consider this: You made a quilt from a pattern in a book using a fabric line you love. It's Sew Emma Spotlight: Little P's

Happy Friday! Today we want to introduce you the newest member of the It’s Sew Emma family, Little P!
Named after one of Emma’s little brothers, Peyton, our Little P’s are excellent for anyone short on time. (No exaggeration here; all of the samples were sewn up in four hours or less.) Little P also stands for “Little Pattern” – these adorable pocket-sized mini patterns have some serious shelf appeal!
