This show is chilling for news broadcasts, which were left in. This was the day that the British destroyer HMS Sheffield was sunk in the Fallklands War. Peel makes little mention of it directly, but is clearly rattled.

This show is famous for one of Peel's greatest cock-ups. The Brian Eno/Robert Fripp track is played backwards. The story goes that only Eno noticed. And when he tried to phone the studio, he couldn't get past the switchboard operator who thought he was a nutter.

This may also be the first time Queen was played in England (or anywhere else). Peel mentions that "a curious and woolly" Eric Idle is in the studio kissing everyone. It sounds like wonderful merriment all around.

The first installment of "things I've been listening to that you might enjoy." This is the first episode of John Peel's second BBC Radio 1 show, "Night Ride," from March 6, 1969. After a successful radio career in America, John Peel became a highly influential pirate radio DJ on Radio London. After the British authorities shut down the pirate radio ships, the BBC formed Radio 1 and promptly hired many of the pirate radio DJs, Peel included. Peel would work for Radio 1 for the rest of his life.

This is the first episode of his second show Radio 1, "Night Ride."
