I’ve never really been on a Twitter client hunt before. Know why? It’s because TweetDeck is awesome. I can’t remember how I came across it but it’s my favourite way to keep track of what’s what on twitter.

You start of with 3 columns: All Friends, Mentions, and Direct Messages. From there, you can make groups of people you’re following to have their own column, add a twitter search column for terms or hashtags, or even link up with other social networks and watch the updates on TweetDeck.

Lately, I’ve been using it to follow the TV shows I watch. I’ve added #castle and #criminalminds columns and find some interesting people. Through the #castle hashtag, I found out that there was a book signing for Heat Wave in LA at the same time the episode was going on here in Toronto. Also, yesterday, I found out that Castle’s been extended to be a full-fledged 22 episode season. The news really travels.

I actually just added the #criminalminds column about 15 minutes ago. I’m sure I’ll find out some things I wouldn’t have known before the end of the night.

A Summer of Games!

As a student, I still get to enjoy my summers (kinda) and not have to deal with any school work (again, kinda). This summer has been especially enjoyable since a lot of my summer earnings have gone towards gaming.

I made a post on my old blog about getting Zoey, my gaming PC. That was back in March and really kicked off my latest era in gaming. The gaming portion of the summer started with the purchase of a new monitor, the Samsung SyncMaster 2243 - a 21.5” widescreen LCD that can handle 1080P. Left 4 Dead never looked so good. Also, I went and got the SteelSeries 3H USB headset for gaming communications. I have no complains about either.

I don’t think I’d be able to remember all this stuff if it wasn’t for my raptr account. It’s kinda like steam but goes beyond just steam based games. If you like personal gaming statistics and to be able to keep track of your library without doing much work, I suggest you give it a shot! My Steam account also helped because of its account transaction record. Maybe I should keep some receipts in the future…

The game purchasing began with Street Fighter 4 for the PC. I wanted to get a fightstick to go with it but for $100CAD… that’s a bit much for such a specialized controller. A friend told me about $50~60 Hori sticks on Amazon. I might have to look into those.

Then I went and got Mirror’s Edge. I wrote a review on raptr. It’s nothing flashy but I got my 2 cents out there. I’ll probably reiterate some of it in a future BGR.

I forget the order of things but I got Call of Duty: World at War off Steam because of the 50% off deal and I couldn’t pass it up. I don’t regret it at all and this one’s definitely gonna be featured in a future BGR.

Another sale item over at the Steam store was Droplitz. It was my first BGR. You know what I think of it. :3

Then for some strange reason, I started playing PS3 again, probably due to the slim coming out. My sister actually let me borrow it and I’ve been playing on my new monitor. I went ahead an bought the PSN games everyone’s been raving about — Noby Noby Boy, Flower, and Fat Princess. All of them are quite fun to play and will get a BGR iin the future.

Today, I purchased Dead Space for the PS3. I haven’t stuck it in yet but I intend on having a very scary long weekend with it.

Looking ahead into the Fall, the games that come to mind that I’m really waiting for are Need For Speed: Shift, Gran Turismo Portable, Bayonetta, and CoD:MW2. I’m sure I missed a few but Oh well. They’ll come to me when they come to me. They’ll come to you via BGR once I get around to playing them.

Budget Gamer Review - Droplitz

I knew nothing of this game prior to it popping up under the Specials tab over at the steam store. 80% off was what grabbed my attention. I saw a trailer and was intrigued. It’s like Pipe Dream meets one of those other puzzlers I can’t quite remember but you’ll know what I’m talking about if you watch the trailer. I was instantly hooked since these kinds of puzzle games are my jam. Just to go over quickly, droppers (located at the top of the board) drop droplitz through the maze of rotatable pieces. It’s your goal to create paths to the collectors (at the bottom of the board) so the droplitz can serve their life’s purpose.

On the Steam version, there are 4 modes of play. Classic, Zendurance, Power up, and Infected. With each play mode, there are 9 different boards: 3 levels of difficulty and 3 sizes. (3 x 3 = 9). Each mode is pretty straight-forward once you get the basic gameplay down. I haven’t touched Infected yet. Also, there are 12 Steam achievements. On the iPod/Phone version, there are 3 difficulties but only one board (from what I’ve played so far).

I don’t really have beef with this game but I find one thing about myself frustrating while playing this game. The only way you can shift the pieces is by rotating them. I get lazy and don’t really think about the consequences between spinning clockwise and counterclockwise which could be the difference between a x10 or x15 multiplier — the more paths you make connecting droppers to collectors, the higher the multiplier. In turn, the bigger the board, the easier it is to make paths. The more difficult (faster droplitz movement) the board, the less time you have to plan out paths. It’s got a lot of room for the most hardcore of thinkers but I find it quite relaxing to play on the largest board with the easiest difficulty. I think my highest multiplier is x23.

One beef that I have with the iPod version is that they should make an option to make the board larger by turning the device. That is all.

How much it’s worth in my opinion
Steam: No more than $5. It’s fun but $10 fun… I don’t know.
iTunes: Can’t complain for $2. Considering how convenient it is on your iPod/Phone, it could make time waiting at the doctor’s or mechanic’s go by without you noticing.

As you can see, there are still only youtube videos and the odd tweet up here. I plan to change soon with a series of budget gamer game reviews. Here’s the breakdown:

1. I purchase a game.
2. I play it to as far to completion as I need to get a solid feel for the game.
3. I write about it and say:
a) How much it was at launch (if possible)
b) How much I got it for
c) How much it’s worth in my opinion

They won’t be particularly long but they’ll contain my strongest opinions about the game. I hope they’ll be useful to someone.
