So recently I had someone ask me “What do I do? I can’t get to work because I’ve had a car accident and it was totaled!”. This is a common problem and puts employees in a precarious situation. If you don’t have a car, then you can’t drive to work. And of course most people don’t wan to use personal days or vacation days to just sit at home (collect them and get thee to Hawaii or somewhere warm!). So what do you do? Here are some ideas:

Ask coworkers to carpool- you can always make a deal with coworkers that if they can pick you up and drive you for a week, then when you get your car back, you’ll do the same for them. Who doesn’t want a little time off from driving?

Rent a car- this obviously costs money, but some car rental places have cars for around $30 a day. While you won’t be driving a Ferrari for that, at least you’ll be mobile.

Take public transportation- explore what your city has to offer in terms of various modes of public transportation. There may be more possibilities than you think.

Take the company van- many large companies have company vans, buses or shuttles that will take employees to work for free. Some of them even have wifi on board!

Contact a lawyer- yes, it may be time to call a car accident lawyer. Why? Because they are experienced at getting insurance companies to pay you more than you’d be able to get on your own. That could more than compensate for having to rent a car. Also if you were injured in the crash, a car accident lawyer will be able to refer to you the appropriate doctors and help you get the medical care you require.

Work from home- many employers are becoming a lot more flexible in allowing employees to work from home. If you explain to your boss that you were in a car accident and that you currently don’t have any transportation, he or she may be willing to let you just work from home until things get sorted out. And with applications like Skye and GoToMeeting, you can even be face to face with other employees while you’re at home.

Go on vacation- if all else fails, go on vacation! Why not? You can get some great discounts on last minute vacations. Just take a cab to the airport and fly away to somewhere fabulous. You’ll soon forget that your car is wrecked.

So while getting in a car wreck is the pits, it happens to almost all of us at one point or another. The best thing to do is to remain calm and sort out all of your options. In the best case scenario you may be able to work a few days from home, and you may even end up with a new car!

Employment expert Alan Shusterman says job seekers need to move beyond onlilne job boards and ramp up their networking, in person, at job fairs, and through volunteer and part time work.

“What companies are looking for is performance. They want to see you are capable of making their business better and its hard to do that when you’re at home all day searching for jobs,” says Shusterman.

Shusterman says, “Every company wants to make something or sell something so if you can help build or sell it, they’re gonna hire you.”

Here are some of the videos we took from the Jobnob Docstoc Happy Hour in Los Angeles on December 9, 2009.

This first one gives you a sense of the crowd and the venue (Air Conditioned Supper Club in Venice)

This one shows the Mahalo company pitch at the event:

And you can find videos for all of the other companies who pitched too at our YouTube Channel jobnobdotcom. Enjoy!

Wednesday night over 300 of LA’s hottest startups and most talented jobseekers crammed into the Air Conditioned Supper Club to attend the first Jobnob-Docstoc Happy Hour . Space was tight as people moved around the room to get their free food (courtesy of Docstoc) and schmooze with the hundreds of people at the event. Twenty companies also got the chance to pitch the crowd on their companies and jobs.

The idea behind Jobnob is to connect jobseekers and startups both in an online community at www.jobnob.com as well as at in person events. Jobnob has already put on 9 successful events in the Bay Area, but this was the first time the event was brought to the Los Angeles startup scene.

While the event was open to anyone, special partners included: USC Viterbi School of Engineering, USC Marshall School of Business, UCLA Anderson School of Business, UCLA Henry Samueli Engineering School, Pepperdine Graziadio School of Business, and the Technology Council of SouthernCalifornia (TCOSC).

You can see a list of companies and jobseekers who attended at http://www.jobnob.com/happy-hour/LosAngeles-dec-9-2009. Just click on the blue buttons JOBSEEKERS ATTENDING and COMPANIES ATTENDING and click on a profile if you want to contact someone. You can also download a pdf file of all of the startups and their jobs at http://www.jobnob.com/files/Jobnob-Docstoc-Happy-Hour-Company-Jobs-List.pdf

Special thanks to Jason Nazar and Docstoc for making this such a terrific event!

While I was searching for places to stay in Seattle, I came across a nifty little website called Dealbase that says they find the best deals and then compare them for you. I checked out their section on Seattle hotels and actually found their deals to be very good. I was looking for a good site to tell me what to do in Seattle, but then I realized that unfortunately I’m not going to be there long enough to be able to see anything. I’m a little disappointed tough that I won’t get to see the Space Needle, and some other things, like the Klondike Gold Rush Museum sounded (strange but) fun. So I guess that means that I’ll just have to come back to Seattle at some point!

If you haven’t registered for the Seattle Jobnob PSN Happy Hour there’s still time! But hurry up, space is limited.
