7. Midtown Tunnel

The official name is the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. It is one of NYC’s toll roads. This road runs beneath the East River. It also joins Queens (in Long Island) with Manhattan. This road runs among major cross-towns. This tunnel includes twin tubes that has a total of 4 traffic lanes.

8. Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

This is NYC’s suspension bridge. More interestingly, it is double-decked. This bridge is connecting Staten Island with Brooklyn. This bridge has a span as large as 4,260 feet. It is renowned as a gateway into New York Harbor. Cruise ships and container ships that arrive into New York’s Port or New Jersey would have to pass beneath it.

9. Staten Island Ferry

The passenger ferry that gives you the coolest, smoothest experience ever possible on NYC waterways! This ferry leaves Manhattan at South Ferry near Battery Park. On Staten Island, this ferry docks at St. George Ferry Terminal. In total, it is a 5 mile trip that will take a little more than 20 minutes.

10. The Brooklyn Bridge

The most ancient suspension bridges in US! It is almost 6000 feet long, and stands over the East River. It connects Manhattan and Brooklyn (on Long Island). This is a classic thing to see in NYC.

Do you feel connected to NYC yet?

Providing safe, reliable service has always been MTA New York City Transit’s top priority. During inclement weather, especially snow storms, NYC Transit works even harder to ensure riders get to where they need to go safely and quickly.

MTA New York City Transit’s Department of Subways maintains a fleet of snow and ice-busting equipment designed to keep outdoor tracks and the third rail clear of snow and ice during harsh winter weather. The fleet includes super-powered snow throwers, jet-powered snow-blowers, and specially-built de-icing cars, all designed to keep service moving. This equipment provides the ability to run trains more often, which also serves as a way to keep tracks clear of snow.

“Our goal is to keep our services up and running so that our customers can get to where they need to be no matter what the weather,” said NYC Transit President Thomas F. Prendergast. “We have a tremendous investment in machinery, manpower and experience so that customer confidence remains high in our ability to transport them safely.”

The expectation of heavy snow brings the order to move all out of service trains from outdoors yards and store them underground. But while the subway portions of the system remain unaffected, there are nearly 220 miles of outdoor track around the system and NYC Transit has heavy-duty equipment designed to move snow, melt ice and do anything else required to maintain service in less than ideal weather conditions. Routes running along the surface and in open cuts, such as the Rockaway, Sea Beach and Dyre Ave. Lines, are particularly vulnerable to snow and freezing weather.

During a heavy snowstorm, such as the one that hit the city in 2006, tracks on outdoor subway lines must be cleared often, and the third rails kept free of ice. Also, the outdoor steps at all 468 subway stations must be shoveled and salted along with the outdoor platforms.

First out of four short posts, the facts about transportation in NYC

1. New York City Subway

This is one of the world’s finest, oldest and largest rapid transit systems. It has over 450 stations. It deals with 229 miles of routes. If you combine all passengers carried by other US public rail systems, the NYC Subway alone will surpass that. Its stations are positioned at different places of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, or Bronx.

With some exceptions, all NYC Subway services run through Manhattan. The first two exceptions are the Franklin Avenue Shuttle and the Rockaway Park Shuttle. The Brooklyn–Queens Crosstown Local (G) doesn’t tear through Manhattan as it joins Brooklyn and Queens straightly.

2. 59th Street–Columbus Circle

This station of NYC Subway is shared by 2 services. The first one is IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line. The second one is the IND Eighth Avenue Line. This subway station stands Columbus Circle, which is in Midtown Manhattan. This is the intersecting point of 59th Street, Broadway and Eighth Avenue intersect.

NYC has great locksmith professionals!

If you are looking for locksmiths, New York City has many quality professionals. Before you hire a locksmith service, here are some modern locking technologies you may want to give a glance.

Keycard lock
These locks are opened with keycards. Keycards are pretty much the same size as credit cards or your driver’s license. Lock systems based on keycard technologies are based on physical movements of detainers. These cards have magnetic strip with digital data encoded.

In its locking mechanism, A keycard lock has locally or centrally stored data. As you insert the card, the lock mechanism’s sensor reads the digital data on the magnetic strip. The strip’s data are compared against stored data. If there’s a match, the lock opens!

Time lock
This locking technology is generally used for the security of bank vaults or containers with high profile security. Time locks are usually used as secondary locking mechanisms. By design they prevent anyone from unlocking safes or bank vaults until a certain time or date.

This way, only the time lock mechanism can unlock the volt at a set time or day. The lock cannot be opened even if anyone knows the right combination(s). Technologically advanced time locks come with multiple independent clocking systems. So if a timer fails by accident, the lock won’t open. Time locks are usually programmable up to 4 days (144 hrs).

Wafer tumbler locks
Mechanisms of this lock include few flat wafers. They prevent this lock from unlocking unless the right key is used. These locks are identical to pin tumbler locks. When the lock has no key inside, its wafers (red) remain pressed by springs. Wafers in the lock remain in a groove at its outer cylinder’s lower portion.

This keeps its plug (yellow) from revolving. As a key goes in, wafers (red) in the lock are lifted out of its lower groove and the outer cylinder. When wafers are clear, the lock’s key, wafers, along with the plug (yellow) can revolve.

Second short post in our Environment protection posts.

• You must develop the habit of segregating and recycling newspapers, beverage containers, glass, metallic items and other recyclable and reusable goods. Buy products made of recycled materials because recycled materials use less of the raw material and also reduce pollution load on the environment (that is inevitable during its production process).
• At the office, start using both sides of the paper, and put off all the appliances, which are not in use.
• Reduce pollution in your garden too – use a hand mower rather than a power mower. Use compost pits to create your own manure.
• Save water wherever possible – it is one of our resources which is not going to last very long.
• Switch over to car-pooling, use a bicycle, or take the public transport.

Perhaps if everyone practices conservation and spreads the word – ‘Save our Planet’, then there may still be some hope left for our planet to survive and the worst nightmare could be postponed a little.

We are going to try and post some environmental posts here, as NYC has its fair share of pollution and air quality issues, maybe this can do some good.

The Earth has been continually changing during the course of its history, with our planet experiencing climate changes, ranging from long periods of warmth to long periods of extreme cold. We can be quite certain that the changing composition of the Earth’s atmosphere has immensely influenced the changes in the climatic regimens of the Earth.

One major culprit that has greatly contributed to climate change and the resulting global warming are the ‘Greenhouse gases’. These gases are the result of emissions consequent to using electricity, air conditioners, refrigerators, and use of cars.

Whether you are at the office or in your home, you can do your bit to help control global warming by following these steps:

• Replace the conventional bulbs with energy star qualified bulbs that can help conserve energy.
• Clean the air filters of your heating and cooling equipment regularly.
• Seal and insulate your home from leakages to prevent hot or cold air from escaping – this way, you can save on a lot of power consumption.
• You can switch over to using green power instead of using the highly polluting conventional power sources to meet your energy demands. Green power is electricity produced from one of the renewable power sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and hydel power.

Next points, on our next posts, in the meanwhile you can check out some pretty amazing national state parks such as the Natural Bridge park and Cumberland in Kentucky.
