New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott had some obviously sarcastic comments regarding the Miami Dolphins after losing Sunday 30-25. When asked about losing after dominating the game statistically Scott said, “It’s tough. They’re a great team. They’ll probably contend for the Super Bowl. They have a tremendous offense – great running backs, a great quarterback, a great tight end. They are stacked across the board. I’m serious. They are great.” Scott was then asked about this loss being a humbling experience and he offered this comment up, “Like I said, they have a great team. They have a tremendous offense and they showed it today. They are Super Bowl contenders and they will probably take it all the way.” Judging by his comments, Scott obviously wasn’t very humbled today.

One thing can be said for the Miami Dolphins: they find different ways to score on any given week. During Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, despite amassing (and I use the word amassing loosely) 104 total yards of offense. That in and of itself tells you that they found ways to score other than at the offensive side of the ball.

By and large, the Dolphins’ defense and special teams provided most of the scoring that they would need, with wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. returning a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns as Miami nipped New York 30-25 at Giants Stadium.

The first half was, depending on your point of view, lacking offense by both teams (probably stating the obvious) or shutdown defense (maybe, maybe not). In any event, the only scoring that took place was bvy way of the foot as field goals were converted by Jay Feely and Dan Carpenter, which would allow Miami and New York to go to their respective locker rooms with a 3-3 tie.

Business picked up markedly in the third quarter as Feely booted a 55-yard FG whihc gave New York a 6-3 edge; the Dolphins would respond immediately as Ginn, Jr. returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score, giving Miami back the lead at 10-6. He would do the same exact thing about 7 minutes later, this time returning the kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown, extending Miami’s lead to 24-13.

The Jets would strike back with 1:35 left in the period as QB Mark Sanchez connected with Braylon Edwards on a 19-yard TD pass, getting New York to within 24-19 going into the fourth quarter. The Dolphins would have their best offensive display on a drive that covered 13 plays and 67 yards, capped by a touchdown pass from Chad Henne to tight end Joey Haynos, extending Miami’s lead to 30-19 with 8:48 left in the game.

A 16-yard TD pass from Sanchez to Dustin Keller would close the gap to 30-25 (the two-point conversion failed). A fourth-and-13 play for the Jets failed as Sanchez fired an incomplete pass to Keller in the end zone, sealing the win for Miami.

The Dolphins’ passing – or lack thereof – was led by Henne who went 12-of-21 for 115 yards with a TD while Sanchez had the better stats, going 20-of-35 for 265 yards and a pair of passing scores as well as a rushing TD. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams rushed for 27 yards, leading Miami while Thomas Jones led the Jets’ rushing attack with 102 yards while catching a pass for 28 yards.

Williams led all Miami receivers with 2 receptions for 41 yards while Keller led all New York receivers as he caught 8 passes for 76 yards and a TD; Edwards caught 4 for 74 yards and a score while Jerricho Cotchery caught 3 passes for 70 yards.

Miami (3-4) plays again next Sunday in a key matchup when they visit Foxborough, MA to take on the New England Patriots while New York (4-4) goes into their bye week and do not play again until Sunday, November 15 when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Sanchez was grilled Sunday after television cameras caught him trying to discreetly put mustard on a hot dog and eat it late in New York’s 38-0 win at Oakland. He apologized after the game, saying he didn’t feel well and needed to eat something. Sanchez added that “it won’t happen again.”

Leon Washington has been placed on injured reserve with a fractured fibula, officially ending his 2009 season. For a short time, it was thought he might avoid IR and return late in the season, but the team apparently thought better of risking a roster spot on a player who might not return. The injury is a nightmare for Washington, who was angling for a new contract. For what it’s worth, Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum has said Washington will be with the organization for a “long, long time.”

As I have said before, the Oakland Raiders are opportunists. By that, I mean that they easily lose at home as they do on the road. Perhaps they were full of themselves when they upset the Philadelphia Eagles last week. Who knows, really? Nonetheless, the Raiders reverted to their normal selves as they accumulated a “whopping” 263 yards of total offense as the visiting New York Jets easily snapped their 3-game losing streak, annihilating Oakland 38-0 at Oakland-Alameda County Stadium.

Turnovers hurt the Raiders as they committed four of them – two by quarterback JaMarcus Russell. And as expected, the Jets made hay on those mishaps as running back Thomas Jones scored on a 1-yard run while quarterback Mark Sanchez scored on a 3-yard run, giving New York a 14-0 lead. The second quarter nearly mirrored the first period as the Jets scored twice – once on a 8-yard run by RB Shonn Greene and a 39-yard field goal by kicker Jay Feely, padding the Jets’ cushion to 24-0 which they would take to their locker room at halftime.

The third quarter was also all New York as Sanchez tossed a 35-yard TD pass to wide receiver David Clowney, upping their lead to 31-0; the final nail in the coffin took place at the 6:30 mark of the final quarter when Greene rushed for his second TD of the game – this one from 33 yards out. but the Jets paid a heavy price for the victory as it was discovered that RB Leon Washington will be out for the rest of the season with a broken right leg, suffered during the first quarter.

The quarterbacks didn’t really figure in the game, statistically. Ball control was the modus operandi as Sanchez went 9-of-15 for 143 yards and a passing TD; he also rushed for a TD. The Raiders used two QB’s during the game – neither one standing out at all. Russell went 6-of-11 for 61 yards and a pair of INTs while his replacement, Bruce Gradkowski, went 10-for-19 for 97 yards. The Jets rushed for a ridiculous 316 (not a tpyo – 316!) rushing yards, led by Greene with 144 yards and 2 TDs while Jones added 121 yards of his own; Justin Fargas led the Raiders rushing attack with 67 yards.

Clowney led all Jets receivers with 4 recptions for 79 yards and a score while Oakland’s Louis Murphy caught 4 passes for 58 yards. New York (4-3) looks to extend their winning ways as they return home to host the Miami Dolphins next Sunday while Oakland (2-5) make the flight south to San Diego to face the Chargers – also on Sunday.

Jets running back Thomas Jones rushed for over 200 yards last Sunday at the age of 31 and he believes he can continue for another four or five seasons. “I can play another four or five years if I want to, God willing, if I stay healthy,” Jones said Friday before the Jets left for their next game at Oakland. “It’s like, ‘Are you kidding me?’” coach Rex Ryan said.

“It almost looks like he’s upside down. The size of those arms, they should be on the legs.” Most NFL running backs begin to breakdown physically by the age of 30. “I don’t even know who came up with that rule,” Jones said defiantly. “Whoever came up with that rule obviously didn’t play running back in this league, didn’t prepare like I prepare, didn’t watch film like I watch film, didn’t take care of their body like I take care of my body. Physically, I feel like a rookie. I don’t feel like I’ve been in the league for 10 years. It’s a mental thing.”

The Jets coach benched safety James Ihedigbo and linebacker Marques Murrell for the their next game because he thought they took things too far by throwing punches at Buffalo’s Derek Fine during a 16-13 overtime loss last weekend.

“Quite honestly, that’s not the way we’re going to play football,” Ryan said Thursday, speaking for the first time about his decision. “We want to be the most physical team in the National Football League within the confinements of the rules.

“What they did was selfish, I thought.”

Ihedigbo and Murrell each were fined $5,000 by the NFL for their actions Sunday, and Ryan plans to make both players inactive for New York’s game at Oakland.

“This is best for our team that these two understand that we’re not going to tolerate it and our football team understands that’s not how we play football,” Ryan said. “That’s not being tough. That’s not being physical, the kind of physical play that I want. There’s no excuse for it and the two young men know that.”

Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News reports as of Monday night, the Jets were exploring possible trades for a D-lineman, according to a league source. The Browns might be interested in listening to offers for DE/DT Corey Williams or even NT Shaun Rogers. Another name floating in trade rumors is Chiefs DE/DT Glenn Dorsey who doesn’t fit the Chiefs’ new scheme, so there’s some speculation about him being on the block.
