I purchased A Cup of Christmas Tea many years ago and read it aloud to my mom and three sisters who i had invited over for a Christmas Tea. Tom Hegg's poem so touched my heart that my voice broke towards the end of the reading. This is the story a man who goes to visit his old aunt whom he loved and spent time with as a child. He goes out of guilt and dreads what condition he'll find her in. To his surprise and delight she is still the same caring, loving woman of his youth and in spite of her physical limitations she still celebrates Christmas. As they drink tea and eat the cookies she's made, he finds that she is vibrant in spirit and draws him out just as she did when he was a boy. This is a book to treasure. It has inspired me as I have grown older and struggle with physical limitations. I bought this copy to send a friend who is wrote that she is finding it hard to care about Christmas as she did in hears past. My hope is t hat it inspires her as it did me.

Years ago a friend read this book to me over a cup of tea during the Christmas season. I thought that was so sweet, I bought myself a copy. I have continued the tradition with many friends over the years. This year when I looked for my copy, I couldn't find it. So checked and found a replacement copy. In so doing, I found there is a sequel which I also ordered from the sweetest book seller, BONNIE TAGS. The day my copy of the original book, A CUP OF CHRISTMAS TEA arrived, my husband found my original copy! That's ok, next year I'll have a copy of this lovely book to give as a gift!
The book is short, I expected a longer read. Kids were not interested - perhaps they could not relate yet having no fragile old relatives. I found the rhyme a bit forced and the reading not really enjoyable. It was ok, but I will not be re-reading it next year.
We often forget the nice people we have known as we grow away from our childhood and get busy being adults. We forget the charm of quiet conversation and a warm cup of tea shared with an older friend or relative. The lessons of life learned as we sip our tea and nibble our dainty sandwiches fade into the past. This little gem takes us back to a quieter, reflective time and helps us put things in proper perspective. Whether you read this during the holidays or just on a solitary afternoon, you will smile and go fix yourself a cup of tea. You might even invite your next door neighbor over! Really delightful... This is an old classic tale told in poetic form about a young man and an old aunt who he fondly remembered as a young boy. The poetic story begins with his hesitation to pay his old aunt a visit because of the problems she has remembering things. Since he is a young man he cannot relate to the common problems of old age. Nevertheless, he decides to visit his old aunt and he learns it is never too late to learn something of value from his wonderful aunt.

After a long talk a with his aunt, where memories of his boy hood Christmas memories came flooding back, his aunt made the tea. Together they sat drinking "A cup of Christmas Tea.

In conclusion, this is a timeless poetic tale that is a joy to read.

I bought this book as a Christmas present after reading reviews. I was not disappointed! I loved it so much that I’m going to also order one for myself. A beautiful story!
Bought this copy to share with a friend...we are both in the stage of life where we are caring for elder relatives and so could relate to the touching theme of this book...reminder to cherish and share all the good times/memories and make new ones while the time is still there to do so. Would recommend...even though Christmas themed, the message is not seasonal.
This is a book that we have always read each and every CHRISTmas but had lost our copy somehow. It has been a family tradition for about 18 years and will continue to be so. It has the most meaningful message in it about what CHRISTmas is all about with the exception of JESUS CHRIST. It's about putting others first.
I would recommend it to everyone to share with your family and maybe start a family tradition.

I haven't read sci-fi in many years (it was my passion as a teen, but I'm long past that period of my life now), so I was pleasantly surprised by the writing and intellectual quality of The Forever War. It is a provocative novel that uses the Theory of Relativity to show us how much the world changes over the 100s of years that actually pass while the space warriors are on missions that last for months. Shifts in social and sexual mores that occur during the protagonist's three combat missions are jarring for him, yet he manages to hold to his personal principles and beliefs. The parallels with Vietnam are clearly intentional (since the author fought in Vietnam), and the returning soldiers are greeted not as heroes but as oddities in a culture that has foresworn war and made peace with an enemy that had slaughtered many of the men and women's friends. This novel is the kind of thoughtful science fiction that I used to love, and I'm delighted to know that such books are still being written. Bring on more!

It's certainly a good book and I enjoyed reading it, however I think that it has lost something since being written. Maybe its tremendous impact on the SciFi genre is working against it when read today. Specifically, the concepts which were novel when this was written, have become SciFi tropes and standards, which since have executed with greater breadth and resolution. The book's length also works against it in that it's hard to flush out concepts when the timeline of the book is millennia and the book is less than 300 pages. I'm not sure it is fair to criticise the odd anachronistic future technology already surpassed today, but it was somewhat jarring at times. For all the criticism I have, it is absolutely a required read for any lover of Science Fiction. It is one of the corner stones that the modern genre is built on and an enjoyable read.
Joe Haldeman's classic science fiction war novel, The Forever War, appears on most lists of the all-time most popular stories in the field. The book won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novel. When it was published in 1974, the Vietnam War was winding down. Haldeman had fought in the war and was badly wounded there. At the time, a dozen publishers rejected the novel because, as Haldeman reveals in an Author's Note at the front of the edition of the novel, "'nobody wants to read a science fiction novel about Vietnam.'"

Today, the parallel between the Vietnam War and Haldeman's story is difficult to see. The Forever War could be no war in history, or every war. "It's about Vietnam because that's the war the author was in," Haldeman writes. "But it's mainly about war, about soldiers, and about the reasons we think we need them."

A classic science fiction war novel set centuries in the future
The Forever War opens in the 1990s, a period that seemed far off when the book was published. But the time quickly advances far into the future as a result of the time dilation explained by the Theory of Relativity. Haldeman posits travel at near light-speed through portals in space-time that are most commonly called "wormholes." He generally refers to them as "collapsars," which are the super-dense product of supernovae. This is the mechanism through which Haldeman can portray his protagonist, William Mandella, fighting in an interstellar war with an alien race called Taurans over the course of many centuries.

This is hard science fiction—up to a point
Haldeman treats relativity on the basis of a solid understanding of astrophysics. Mandella is, in fact, a physicist. The starships Haldeman describes appear to be consistent with our understanding today of ship design and propulsion systems appropriate for space travel. And, unlike most science fiction authors who venture far into the future, Haldeman clearly grasps the ways language changes over time. Centuries later, in his telling, 21st-Century English is virtually unintelligible to contemporaries. In fact, of course, there's unlikely to be anything virtual about the difficulty. Just try to understand Old English today!

However, relativity, spaceship design, and linguistics aside, Haldeman's tale is entirely fanciful. The super-weapons he describes may well be based on what scientists today might imagine will be possible. But they are, in the end, imaginary. So, too, are the Taurans.

Considerations of reality notwithstanding, this classic science fiction war novel is suspenseful, tightly written, and psychologically plausible. And this edition is, in fact, Haldeman's original text, before the publishers of the 1970s toned it down for what they deemed the less tolerant readers of the time.

About the author
The Forever War was Joe Haldeman's second published novel. It remains the work for which he is best known. He has written more than 30 novels and received every major industry award. Haldeman's long, successful career has won him a Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and placement in the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
I first read this many years ago, but seeing it at a bargain price of $1 over the Black Friday weekend was irresistible.
It's been good to revisit it, too. Sure, I remembered an awful lot, but times have changed in our world since then, which makes for something of a good parallel with the tale itself.
For those unfamiliar with the book, it's the story of William Mandella, a soldier fighting in deep space for humanity - but the faster than light travel that carries him and his fellow soldiers into battle also means that while only a year or two may pass for them, many years pass on the Earth they are fighting for.
Before they know it, the world they left behind is almost unrecognisable to the soldiers - and the only remnant of the world gone by are the soldiers themselves, finding in one another the familiarity they can no longer see in society.
There are obvious connections here to the veterans who returned from Vietnam - Haldeman himself served there - and came home to a country they struggled to fit into after the horrors they had experienced.
Among the changes they see are changing attitudes to sexuality over the years. I've seen people criticise the book for Mandella's attitude to homosexuality, which becomes more prominent in society in the decades in which he's off fighting alien aggressors, but really that's a representation of both Mandella's place and time, and I would argue a positive showing an increased acceptance of homosexuality. Sure, Mandella has a struggle to accept that - but he struggles to accept everything about the changed world. He is a man literally out of time, with regard to just about every aspect of society.
It truly is a visionary novel, tackling heavyweight subjects of how you go on fighting for a world you no longer recognise, even as you do your duty.
If you've never read it, trust me, put it on your reading list - it truly is one of the greats.

I just finished reading Stay with Me and I admit to feeling sad and so disappointed and I'm trying to figure out why. This book is the third in the Wait for You series and it's about Calla, Teresa's friend. She's had it tough - lost most of her family so young, has scars on her face and body and just before the summer of her senior year, she discovered how her mom drained their bank account and caused her to be thousands of dollars in debt. So she goes back to her hometown only to find out that her mom's been missing for about a month. She decides to wait it out and work at her mom's bar, earn some money. There she gets friendly with the handsome bartender Jax, who likes her despite her facial scars and her druggie mother. He introduces her to a lot of firsts and he does his best to take care of her because even with her background, Calla seemed very innocent and lost.

Thinking back, I realized my disappointment stems from the fact that I just didn't like the story. I found it over the top in some parts, a bit boring in others and over all just incredulous. There was too much drama after another going on, that the story got bogged down. So much so that there were moments I was either rolling my eyes or was skipping parts.

And on the romance side, I also felt no interest on seeing where Jax and Calla's relationship was leading...it just felt forced to me. I know Jax was supposed to be this likable hot hero but he fell short. He acted like a player who talks a good game but is just a condescending older guy that lies and can't be counted on.

All in all, I feel really let down with Stay with Me. It had a huge potential but it just felt flat. I expected so much especially since J Lynn said it was her fave book but I seriously doubt that I will be continuing with this series...unless of course it'll be about Cam and Avery. For now, my advice is to wait until the price drops before buying...oh, and also to lower expectations because sad to say, this book is not one for keeps.

Could have been much much better, if the story was not dragged down by the most dreary, awful pasts of the characters. Strangely I loved the heroine, she was perky and irrepressible, but immature. The hero was not for me at all. I can't say that I have disliked a hero as much as this one in a while. The reason? When they fought over the OW, who was still hanging around with encouragement from the the hero, he just slams the door on the heroine, stays away from her, no communication and then only comes back to confess his love AFTER she has been gut-shot. Undying love was not a theme here. Nothing could really save the book for me after that. Not even his final confession of having loved her from afar from long before they even met.
Also, there was way too much misery in this story, the fire, the death of his sister, the drugs and all the fall-out from that, the mother, the villain mob-guy, the dead body through the window, the heart-attack of the loving uncle, it went on and on and on. This book really needed an editor, or if it had one, a different editor. For a while there was a KA feel to the book and especially the hero's personality and if that was intentional, which is ok, it did not work.
JLA is one of my favorite authors and I know when I pick up one of her books I won't be putting it down until it's finished. This book had me up until WAY past my bedtime reading about Calla and Jax. I adore every couple in the Wait For You world, but these two are my favorite. This story is a prime example of how your past can continue to royally screw up your future, whether you are doing everything right or not!

Calla just wants to finish college to become a nurse when her sad excuse of a mother cleans out her bank account. She has to return home to deal with this, and in doing so runs into Jax, who is running Mona's, Calla's mother's bar. Sparks fly, the past comes up to haunt them both in very dark, dangerous ways, and they have to navigate into the future together.

Just read it! You'll love their banter, and the whole cast of characters is a complete dream squad. Who can't love a psychic stripper who got her gift falling off the pole? The best part about this world is that it feels real, and you are plunked down in the middle from the get-go.
5 stars Super great book. My favorite in this series. It takes the self-image issues to the next level.

Seriously, Calla is scarred. She's embarrassed by her body. And not in the "oh my thighs have cellulite" or "my brother hit me with a branch when we were kids so I have this scar on my eyebrow" kind of way. She is straight up scarred and skin-grafted and everything. I mean, she might as well be missing both legs and the plot still works. So no wonder she has massive self-image issues. This is what took this book to the next level for me... I'm so tired of reading about self-image issues that don't go beyond "my boobs are small and my stomach has stretch lines." Dude, that's everybody.

I have read 43 out of JLA's 48 published novels and novellas, so obviously I'm already on board with her writing style. But there are a handful of her books that I like to revisit every so often, and this is one of them. I like the surprise at the ending (I find it sweet, not creepy). I like how Jax interacts with Calla at every point. I like the danger aspect. Overall two thumbs up from me!

I really liked the characters and the story line. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a clean and fun romance.
Enjoyed The Grass is Always Greener and the other "Belles" books. I have loaned the books to friends who are reading them now.
This is a great book but we need at least one more story. This is a book that I would have in my classroom library.
This was a great finale to the series. Every single page made you want to read more
If you loved "Belles" and "Winter White" you are sure to love "The Grass Is Always Greener". Izzie and Mira are about to be 16 and a lot of things have changed their sophomore year in High School at Emerald Prep. Keep read the "Belles" Series to find out!

I really love these books but I want to know how the sisters are after they turn 16!
I really did like this book. It was full of excitement and secrets that were soon to be discovered. I really hope that Jen Calonita keeps going on with this series. If she doesn't I don't know what I'm going to do. I mostly read books that are full of secrets, mystery, and romance and this was definitely the book for me. I could not stop reading this. If u ask me, the book was sort of short but I give Jen a lot of credit. I loved how Mira found a new guy to be in her life. That was a shocker. There was only one thing that I didn't exactly like about this book. A lot of secrets were revealed but the was no REAL drama between Izzie and Brayden. I really wanted to see some real problems that could've happened in their relationship. In the first two books, there was so much drama between them that I would literally crawl up in a ball and dare myself to read more. That's what I was expecting from this book. But it was a great book on the other hand. I did expect more with this book but it was still good. I would recommend anybody to read this series and I guarantee you that you will love it as much as I do!!!!!!!!!

The author did not disappoint in this installment of London Mob Boss.
Ferrell is his consistent dependable self, forever vigilant of Jenna and Lily. He keeps the worry on his shoulders and asks nothing in return (at first). Jenna is of course her indecisive self. She really does start to grate on your nerves. I find her to he whiny and selfish when compared to what Ferrell is doing. She often blamed him when In fact it is her that has brought on the trouble.

Towards the end of the book she comes to a long awaited realization and I am glad Ferrell asked her to be sure. I was tired of seeing him get jerked around.

The author takes you to some wonderful destinations. She did a great job describing them for the readers. The romance scenes...yeah...Ferrell. Enough said. I'm adding him to my book boyfriend list. I'm excited for the third installment.

I really pity the idiots who have set Farrell and Jenna on this mission. Now the world thinks their killers. Th i is not going to end well for them. They have to keep Lily and Kate safe. Everyone they come into contact with turns up dead. Now on their way to Paris this is coming to an end soon. Farrell has to much power and contacts for the evil conspirators to hide forever. I can't wait for th next book.
This book moved along at a wonderful pace. It was full of drama, sexy scenes, and an intense love. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the storyline moved at a decent pace and wasn't rushed like some other books I have read. Jenna and Farrell are amazing characters and the the love they have for each other and the realizations they have as a couple no as individuals is awesome. I a, ready to read the next book.
Love Jenna and Farrell, but as in my comment with the first book. Jenna's back and forth made be harden towards her a little. I like how the story is slowly unfolding with the papers found in her father's safe deposit box and who is actually after them to silence them. Overall good read, I just wish there was more "mafia." Farrell has the connections, but yet, he still can't get certain information and for a man that has all those connections and connections to the black market you would think the story would play out differently.
Love Farrell and Jenna. Primal starts a few months after where Savage left off. Jenna is working and staying away from Farrell even though he has been spending time being a father to Lily. Jenna has been safe so far… and then she feels someone following her and Lily… lucky for them someone else is also following them. And it begins again and the quest for the truth. Will they be safe, will they be found, will they find their way back to one another… I can’t wait for Eternal!!!
I’ve loved Farrell and Jenna’s story from the beginning so I was thrilled by how it heats up even further here while also becoming richer and more complex. The author does a wonderful job entwining all the passion and romance with a suspense subplot that is terrifyingly real. But there’s an extra element to this story that makes it truly unforgettable--the relationship that Farrell and Jenna have with their daughter and together as parents. Anyone who is a parent knows how the love and joy of a child also brings a full measure of vulnerability and concern, sometimes even fear. Michelle St. James depicts that beautifully, in the process taking a passionate, exciting story to an intense new level. I can’t wait for Book Three!
Book 2 of the series starts 3 months after the first book ended. Jenna and her five year old daughter are trying to live a normal life away from Lilly's father who happens to be a crime boss of the London mob. Jenna and Lilly barely escaped death at her father's Cornwall property. So Jenna wants to stay away from Farrell Black. However the people who want to kill her are because her father found out a shady lab was developing a bioweapon. Jenna discovers she and Lilly are far from safe and turns to Farrell to help. But Jenna and Farrell realize they must stop this evil group that is willing to kill and threaten. This story becomes extremely exciting as Jenna and Farrell travel from Italy to England to Amsterdam to Germany trying to stay ahead of the murderous group. The book is sit on the edge of your seat exciting but also advances the loving and sensual relationship of ore hero and heroine. The ending makes you want book three immediately but June is the last installment. I highly recommend this series.
This series just got even better!! This book starts out 3 months after where book 1 left off. But its perfect. Michelle St. James delivered a great second book that had me reading book 3 right after I was done with this one. With more action, more emotion, this book was absolutely amazing.
Jenna and Lily are trying to live a normal life - or rather Jenna is trying to live what she feels is a normal life for Lily. Though she is no longer keeping Farrell from Lily - she couldn't if she tried but I'm glad for her character development- she is also not giving in to Farrell and continuing to do everything her way. But when trouble continues to come for Jenna she has to start doing things Farrell's way. Farrell will stop at nothing to make sure both Jenna and Lily are safe. After making sure Lily is safely hidden from powerful enemies Farrell and Jenna start digging to find out what's really going on. What they find is more trouble than they thought they could get into, and one that could possibly end them.
This book was filled with action and twists and turns.
A 4/5 for me!! I wish I could give it more!!

Their mother has been a mostly absent part of their lives, and the few times she is around she is usually drunk or on drugs and often with a new lowlife boyfriend who is supplying those drugs. Maggie suffers from cystic fibrosis, an incurable genetic disorder that is slowly killing her. As a member of the street gang known as the Leopards, Selina fights in underground fighting rings to earn the money needed to pay for medical tests, medications, food, and rent money to keep them both going. At least, it does until the night their mother is arrested and a woman from social services arrives with two police officers to take the girls into custody and place them in foster care.

The foster homes are usually overcrowded group homes, infested with bugs, and won’t be able to provide Maggie with the care she needs to try and survive having cystic fibrosis. The care she needs is expensive and unlikely to be provided even if she were lucky enough to wind up in one of the better foster homes. The girls both know that this is essentially a death sentence for Maggie, but what can they do to escape it?

When Selina is arrested for assaulting the police officers who came to take them away, she learns that at nearly 18 and with two previous strikes against her, she won’t be going to a juvenile detention center. She’ll be sent to prison instead. When a woman offers her an alternative, one that will see Maggie placed in better care and will erase Selina’s criminal record, she realizes that she really has no other option. For her sister’s sake, and understanding that she likely won’t see Maggie ever again, Selina accepts Talia al Ghul’s offer.

I have long been a fan of the DC comics Catwoman character and have seen numerous origin stories describing how she started out and how she became one of the more recognized of Batman’s foes. Those seeking a book that follows the traditional DC comic book origin story for her probably won’t appreciate this one. While all the expected characters appear in the book, Catwoman’s origin story as told here is rather different than what one would expect, and it is certainly different than what is told in the various comic book versions.

Personally, I loved it. This book kept me so entranced that if there were any typos, I never noticed them. (Any book that can keep me that interested in just reading & not watching for errors is a rare thing these days.) Parts of this story even had me tearing up and wanting to cry. I am very glad that I picked it up. I will definitely be reading the other books that are out about the DC comic book characters and hoping they are just as amazing as this one. I strongly recommend reading it.

***** FIVE STARS! This story starts out by showing Selina’s horrible, young teen life and explains why it is so much harder than any other person’s. The story continues two years later when she returns to Gotham City with a plan. That plan is kept under wraps by the author until well in the book, and I refuse to tell or give spoilers. When the plan is finally revealed, readers realize that everything Catwoman has done had a specific purpose. In the exciting conclusion, it all comes together and I am left grinning like an idiot. *****

This was such a fun ride and I did not expect it to pack the punch it did. I am a big Sarah J. Maas fan and I was so looking forward to Catwoman to see a different side of her writing and I was not disappointed. She delivered an action packed anti-heroine story with a ton of heart and some romance to boot.

I absolutely LOVED Selina. She is so fierce and strong and smart and tough and she also has so much heart. At the base of it all her heart is what drives her. She is so easy to root for, even as she is robbing people left and right and causing general chaos. She is simply likable and at her core she’s a good person who just does bad things sometimes.

And then we had Ivy, who in a lot of ways stole the show. I truly loved her and loved the friendship that formed between Ivy and Selina. Forever a fan of strong and positive female friendships. Loved Harley too, she’s such a loose cannon and brought so much fun and crazy to the story. And of course I have to mention Luke, aka Batwing. Adored him as well. He is such a good guy and just wants to do right and do something meaningful. And of course I loved Selina and Luke together. It was fun watching them dance around one another and seeing how both sides of their personalities intertwined.

I feel like I need to mention though that I am not a comic book reader, it’s just not a medium I ever got into. But I love superheroes and villains as characters and I adore the genre when it comes to movies and other mediums. I mention this because if you are looking for a strict canon Catwoman, this probably isn’t the book for you. This is a new take on Catwoman, and I personally love her, but I recognize that those who are very attached to their version of Catwoman may not love this version. Personally I think the world has enough room for multiple versions and takes on classic characters, but I also get why some people don’t like to see their favorites messed with.

A Stranger at Fellsworth just may be my favorite book yet from Sarah E. Ladd! I was able to read it in one day but was forced to put it down at Chapter 31 when “real life” got in the way and it was killing me until I could pick it up again. 🙂

I felt that the story had an excellent balance of dialogue and descriptions. I could really picture the locations but the descriptions weren’t excessive.

I loved both Owen Locke and Annabelle Thorley. I liked the Annabelle had a quiet yet strong personality and Owen’s personality, back story and description were so interesting. He also had some of the best quotes, like this one: “I would take the solace of a forest over the hustle of london’s streets any day. Just listen to the silence. If the mind is too cluttered, you will never hear your soul’s whispers.”

Certain events at the end were predictable but I feel they did not take away from the story at all.

I really like Sarah E. Ladd. She's not my best Regency era setting author, that would HAVE to be Jane Austen, but she is a good writer with MOSTLY language that works, but isn't too vintage for contemporary readers. Christian writers must walk a fine line between much theology, and none at all for their reader base. Ladd is accessible to those not evangelical, but those who understand that characters in this era did pray and spoke of their spirituality more casually than contemporary characters might.In other words, unlike the more traditional Christian writers, Ladd doesn't have her characters pray all the time, but does have them bring to reader's attention at appropriate occasions that they DO have Christian beliefs. Perfect for a WIDE variety of Christian readers.
This book is a wonderful addition to my collection of historical fiction. I have read the other books in the series, but this book stands well on its own. The main character has to give up everything in order to protect herself. Her experiences and feelings while living through this give the book some thoughtful scenes that potentially impact how we think about our own lives. I did enjoy the book and will continue to look for more books by Sarah Ladd to read and enjoy.
Life has been a challenge for Belle. With a murder, the threat of an unwanted marriage, broken trusts, and danger following her; she takes her only option and runs. She starts over, despite realizing how pampered her life was, and discovers there is a lot to learn to survive. As all these things catch up to her; we are left wondering who is the murderer? Who has been poaching? Who can she trust? How did they find her? Is love even possible?

This is a clean story with a tiny bit of preaching, suspense, and forbidden romance. I loved it!
A stranger at Fellsworth is Book 3 in the Treasures of Surrey series of novels and it's talented author is Sarah E. Ladd. This series has been a favorite and I am never disappointed by this author. I can expect a clean romance and isnpiring faith based characters that are well developed and interesting. The story is well written and gives the Christian reader much to relate to and or ponder. Looking forward to more in this series and others from this good author.
If a book has the ability to be a time machine, a portal to another time and place - then Sarah E Ladd’s latest historical offering offers no less than to immerse one in a time long ago and in a culture far different than our own.

A Stranger at Fellsworth tells the tale of Annabelle - a young socialite whom the world seems to be at her beckoning when scandal threatens to destroy it all. Orphaned with only a rather repugnant brother as her ward - she is expected to marry a man far her senior and less than savoury in his manner.

Annabelle decides to abandon her home and along with her maid, flee to her uncles estate and the school which her is superintendent. She finds an unexpected ally whom she literally bumps into but then when their paths cross at the opportune time when Annabelle needs a means of escape, he becomes her only option to remove herself from her brother’s plotting ways.

That ally - Owen Locke has secrets of his own. Tragedy and scandal follow him as well but there is nothing he wouldn’t do for his young daughter. When Annabelle is made a teacher at the school where she attends - more bonds will be created.

With the threat of poachers weighing heavy over the estate of Fellsworth and it’s neighbours - Owen and Annabelle may need each other more than they can ever guess as the danger maybe closer than home than they could ever have guessed.

I read this book in almost one sitting - it had suspense aplenty and just the right amount of tension to make it un-put-down-able.

I loved both Owen Locke and Annabelle Thorley. I liked the Annabelle had a quiet yet strong personality and Owen’s personality, back story and description were so interesting. He also had some of the best quotes, like this one “I would take the solace of a forest over the hustle of london’s streets any day. Just listen to the silence. If the mind is too cluttered, you will never hear your soul’s whispers.”

Certain events at the end were predictable but I feel they did not take away from the story at all.

Okay, so I have been on a Teresa Mummert reading binge this week. I just can't help myself, her books are just so addicting!! I didn't put any of her books down until I read the last page, so this means that I was up until 2-3am reading. So I am currently hyped up on caffeine and awaiting the crash lol. This is the first book in her new Sin Series (Squeeee) and I can't wait for the second one!!!

Sinthia is a college student just trying to make good grades, keep her head down, stay out of trouble and graduate so she can start her life. She has her dreams all planned out, great guy, great job, nice house with a white picket fence and children. So when her best friend Taylor (a.k.a party animal, wild child) calls to go party, she tries her best to ignore her because she can never say no to Taylor. After begging and begging, Sinthia finally agrees to go out for ONE drink only, she doesn't even try and dress up she wants to get it over with.

Once they get to the bar and have that one drink, Taylor refuses to leave and drags Sin to the dance floor where she notices Collin, the resident college bad boy starring at her. His eyes are glued to her all night, so when she is shoved from behind by two guys fighting he comes to her rescue with fists swinging. They end up drinking beer and playing pool, and ending the night at his place playing video games. Just as the sun is starting to come up they decide to go to bed, sleeping in the same bed as JUST FRIENDS!!! It's obvious that Collin has a thing for her, but she knows he is a bad boy and doesn't fit in to her happily ever after dream. As time passes they become close and start going out every night, she even bring Taylor along to hangout with them and his roommates. She becomes everyones wing man, finding them (everyone but her) "dates" for the night, but after a while she can't seem to do it anymore, she starts developing feelings for Collin.

Sin has had enough with finding women for him, he has a different one every night. She finally realizes that she wants to be the one he chooses but is scared that she will mess up their friendship if she crosses that line. She could put herself out their and he could shoot her down then what would happen, she would lose him forever or he could continue with his bad boy lifestyle and she wants more than a one night stand.
What will happen???? I know you are dying to find out so get the book!!!! I am so excited for the second book, Comminting Sin to be released...EEEEKKKK!!!!

After reading "White Trash Beautiful I definitely wanted to read more of Teresa Mummert's books. I really liked Breaking Sin, it started out really good but then it felt like it ended way too soon and I really wish there would of been more to the steam you could feel building between Collin and Sin, my only draw back from giving it 4 instead of 5 stars. I can't wait to see what happens with the second part of this series. I loved the character Beef, hopefully he will be part of the next book.
I had high hopes for this book...I have read other books by Teresa M. and liked them very much but this one was seriously lacking. It was more of a novella, not a book. Very short...was done within an hour or so. Along with this, the writing was not very good. The book was very choppy. More then a few times I found myself having to re-read sentences just to understand where the heck the author jumped to. In one sentence the character is shopping...and without any transition, she is then at the bar. It was just a little hard to follow, although the story could have been very good. There needed to be more back story on the main characters, better transitions, grammer, etc.
I absolutely love all of Teresa Mummert's books. I haven't read all her books yet but she has yet to disappoint me. Breaking Sin was excellent! I like a good looking, possessive male character that believes himself not worthy of the love of good girl. Sinthia is looking for a good guy and when she meets womanizer Collin she knows he is not for her even if she feels the attraction for him. They become friends and she becomes his "wingman" as their friendship evolves. How long will Sinthia hold back her true feelings for him as she picks out his next conquest? When will Collin tell Sinthia that he wants more than a friend or wingman from her? Both of them think they know what they want in a relationship, but will they sacrifice their true feelings for each other? Anxiously waiting on the next book. I need more Collin!
Love this fast put in your face story. Bad boy meets good girl. I loved it, what can I say, I'm a sucker for romance. I've read this twice already and love it even more. Sin and Collin, they are awesome together right from their first meeting. What is it about elevators!!! Excited to see what the next book entails! Beef, Taylor and the gang are a hilarious bunch when all together. I've read all the rewiews and even the negative ones didn't guide me not to read. I go off of instinct, or perhaps listening to my inner voice. And might I say, I'm glad I did. Yes, I would recommend this book, a must if you ask me!!! Hands down to the author, keep up the good work )
This is truly a well-written coming-of-age short story with the most intriguing characters, coupled with an absolutely fabulous premise it made one incredible read! Sassy and smart college student Sin meets bad-boy, man-whore Collin and they instantly become friends and share their evenings with a close-knit group of friends. Their partying and enjoying their time together with their hilariously raunchy friends makes them more aware of each other, and actually, links them closer together.

However, Collin, by far, is not the kind of relationship Sin is looking for he does make her rethink what she really wants. After both have become increasing dependent on the other to be there for each other, they realize they want more than friendship, which will eventually break them apart. And when it does, it tears each of their hearts apart. But not is all lost, for you see, the ending will resurrect the most heartfelt relationship imaginable...breathtaking story! Highly recommend!

Love the book and the movie.
Named my daughter after the heroine. Gave her the book for her Christmas gift and she melted! Love the movie stills in the middle of the book.
my collection is now complete. with this movie tie-in & the willow sequel trilogy(shadow moon, dawn & star) I have the entire willow set.
If you like the movie, you will like the book. It gives a lot more detail to the story. I enjoyed it very much.
I’m always a bit leery of buying from 3rd parties, but the book was stellar. The copy I ordered was rated as “Good” as far as condition goes, but honestly, as far as 30 year old books go, it arrived damn near perfect. Pages yellowed a bit, but that’s to be expected. This isn’t the easiest book to find anymore, let alone in great condition. So thank you! I’ll definitely be checking out their collection and ordering again.
For whatever reason, I have loved this movie since I was a kid. It was a movie I always watched at least two or three times while visiting my grandparents' house. The book follows the movie very well and also includes some backstory on the characters and lore. Being a fan, I also bought the next book in the series since George Lucas never continued the story on the big screen. I'm about a quarter of the way through and am enjoying it also.

Shannon Stoker's "The Registry" is the story of an alternate America where girls are raised to be brides that are essentially auctioned off to the highest bidder. The boys go off to serve their country in a mandatory 4 year term & then get the chance to buy a bride from The Registry. When Mia Morrissey gets ready to be listed she has an encounter with her sister who comes back home & is nearly dead from the abuse of her husband. It's then that Mia decides after she's appraised at one of the highest prices possible that she plans her escape & does so with her friend Whitney & cohort Andrew who is a farmhand. The story itself is a chance across the country as they outrun Mia's husband Grant who buys her sight unseen as they themselves are funneled through what amounts to an Underground Railroad system en route to freedom in Mexico. The story itself is engaging & a quick read with chapters that are short & easy to follow; however, the biggest question I have with this book is - why do I care about these characters & their plight?

Stoker's biggest flaw is that the background history of the creation of The Registry let alone this version of the US has so many holes in it that I literally need to know more in order to care. Supposedly there was a great war that the US fought & won that did some damage to the male population which is why they are treated like throw away children (sort of like the Chinese today with their girls). There is also a hint that the population of the girls was decimated due to some sort of either plague or other disaster making them in short supply. None of this is clearly referenced. Also there is a line that almost implies as if the states are actual countries while referencing certain regions of the US as x-area. It is that lack of development within the story that makes it almost hard to understand the simple reason of why is all of this necessary or better yet when is this even set.

Don't get me wrong, I want to care about these characters & understand why the US has taken this major step backward & I'm also very curious about the sequel to this book planned for Winter 2014, but for now though this book is a skip in my mind simply due to information that probably could've taken a quick chapter or 2 to develop & make this world more believable.

I figured out the problem with this book but it took until the middle before I finally placed my finger on it. While the premise is actually one I really do enjoy (dystopian world), the characters are stereotypes you would expect in any "reality tv show" casting. There is the stupid, pretty girl, the smart not-so-pretty girl, the rich mean guy, the poor nice guy, the pair of gays, etc. Everyone you end up meeting in the story has 1 dimension - and it is very stereotypical. Perhaps the author meant to do this, showing that a dystopian world produces people with no depth of character, but I doubt that much thought went into it.

The premise and intro really got me hooked. I read for 3 straight hours the first time I picked it up and only put it down when I had to sleep because of the premise and I wanted to see how the country got that way. However, after having some sleep, picking up the book () again led me to wonder why these characters had no depth.

I did finish the story since I don't like to start the book and not finish it, but it was not as developed as I would have liked. If you see this on sale, it is worth a viewing, but be warned that there are issues with the characters.
The premise of this novel is interesting and the plot shows promise, but I felt like I was reading a first draft version. The characters are interesting but underdeveloped and their relationships are stilted. I wish I could speak to the author and tell her to dig deeper into who her characters really are and then rewrite the last couple of chapters. So many things happen that are not logical based on the characters' previous actions, and it felt like the end was just thrown together to finish the book. I was disappointed.
Mia has been trained to believe that her beauty is her whole worth and that she must submit fully to her future husband. But she is determined to find something more for herself that what the system of the Registry offers to her.

I thought many of the ideas and themes in "The Registry" were interesting. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get past the fact that I thought the characters were one-dimensional and unbelievable. Mia, the completely sheltered non-educated girl, suddenly becomes someone who is contributing to the running away effort. And Whitney, the girl who has been taught to think for herself, is somehow unable to break out of the conditioning of the American system. Both of these characters actions once they run away don't really align with how their backgrounds were presented. Instead of being so stark, there should have been a mix of fight/nerves in both girls instead of having them react so differently to being on their own. And then for Andrew, no real reason is developed behind his determination to break from the system. It just seemed so sudden and didn't align with how he is presented, a law-abiding boy in the system.

As good as some of the world building was, the characters that populated it were super disappointing. So I don't think I'll be reading the rest of this series.

Abbott is about a black woman reporter in 1972 Detroit, who investigates a series of murders of an otherworldly nature.

It is excellent.

The tone is both true to its time (from what I’ve heard, as I’m neither from Detroit nor Black nor old enough to have been alive in 1972.)

Abbott doesn’t take any crap from anyone, and at the same time she has her weaknesses and flaws. Her supporting cast and her enemies are not as deeply fleshed-our as the main character, but considering that this book represents only five comics, that’s not a significant concern.

The story is excellent, the art is dynamic and detailed, and the combination makes for a compelling experience. As with all comics, the end of the comic is not the resolution of the main source of conflict, but that’s good, because it may signal more to comic. I hope that Saladin Ahmed, Sami Kivelä, and Jason Wordie return to this world to give us another glimpse.

This is a fantastic addition to the collections of anyone that includes Constantine or Dresden Files
I loved this book! It’s a 1970’s occult noir following hard-boiled reporter Elena Abbott as she tries to piece together the story behind several gruesome murders that the cops are all to eager to sweep under the rug. Beautiful visual story telling and a cast full of charming characters.

It’s also a stand-alone comic (I think...this story is finished by the end of the book) so it’s easy to pick up without worrying about learning the lore of a whole universe, or following along book after book after book.
I thought I'd like this. I didn't expect how powerfully it would make me feel. The story, writing, art - every little detail. It packs a punch.

I hope there will be more stories to tell.
Admittedly, I'm a fan of Saladin Ahmed's work, but this is his first comic offering I've read, and it did not disappoint. He weaves a hell of a story, and Sami Kavelä's artwork took me right back to the comics of my childhood. I hope Elena Abbott goes on to have more adventures we can share.
I don't know if the writer or artist remember the 1970's, but I do and there is something perfect about the rendition of that era in this book. There was something Lovecraftian about that decade and the essence ia captured in this story.

Nobody understands the pacing of comics better than Ahmed. This is a masterwork.
This book is a wonderful and exceptionally well crafted supernatural crime drama, Abbott written by Saladin Ahmed with art by the amazing up and coming talented Sami Kivela, and published by Boom Studios, this comic is a rad flashback to 1972 Detroit, and tells the story of a tough as nails reporter named Abbott, and she doesn't take crap from anyone, and has a Pam Grier style swagger about her! When a new odd story she's on starts bringing back old memories she falls in to a starts having terrifying visionsand she is hunted by mythical monsters, she has to nuckel up and fight, and I just love it and the character Abbott, she is just such a great main lead, she is strong and independent, but she is also kind and respectful, she's brash, but she treats her friends well and always pays back her debts, on the real this book is just so good and I super duper highly recommend it!
This is a fantastic read. Elena Abbott is a wonderful heroine -- smart, brave, insightful, and determined. Oh, also incredibly stylish and sexy. The setting is 1970s Detroit with all sorts of dangers ranging from the too-plausible (racist cops) to the incredible (creepy occult beasts). The combination of historical detail and creative horror puts this book over the top for me. There was something to be intrigued by (or cower from) on virtually every page. The art is great -- it's crisp and alternates between beauty and grotesque body horror (sometimes weirdly combining the two).

IMO, this is a horror comic not to miss.

I needed this book in my life after the heartbreak of the last book I read. I just picked this up because of the title. (yes, I am a title judger and a cover judger as well) And because I haven't read a fairy tale in a while. The name really says it all. Its not like any fariy tale I have ever read. A very cute YA romance. I just kinda sunk right into it. I loved the school for magical creatures and how you had to apprentice to one to graduate. There were all manner of creatures. The Sandman, Master Time, Fairy Godmothers, Centaurs, those goat things (I think they are called satrys) It was rich in magic diversity.

Ash is a sterotypical teenage masculine personality. Pink was for girls and boys don't talk about their feelings. They called other guys tools when they feel threatened and get protective of the ones they care about. He made me feel like a teenager again and I kinda liked it. I just wanna fold him up and stick him in my pocket and carry him around. I'm swear I'm not creepy. But as his character progressed in depth I really began to become invested in him. Not like a cutesy teenage way. He took me on a journey that changed him and I feel differnt for having known him. Again, I'm not creepy talking about fictional characters. I promise.

Kendall was a sweetheart. I liked her immediately. I know what its like to lose a parent albeit not as traumatically as she did. And she was reminded of it everyday which had to be hard. It was easy to identify with her. Although to be fair she was a bit wishy washy when it came to the guy she liked and she could have been a better friend to Tess. The flow was so easy-going and consistent, it was just so good.

Read it, its got a sweet twist at the end that I won't go into. Just read it.

Fun twists and turns that I didn't see coming from a mile away like some books. I'll have to get the sequel to find out what happens next.
Ash is in disbelief - he is the first male fairy-godmother. Ever, like ever ever. Complete with wings and a pink wand, which doesn't stay pink for long. To say he's irritated would be an understatement. He's stuck working with Kendall, a girl who doesn't believe in happily ever after. An accident changed her life and she's stuck in a game of blame with herself, not wanting to move on. Ash has an enormous challenge ahead of him. The story is full of hilarious anecdotes and conversations between Kendall and Ash! It's definitely a page-turner and an easy read!

The relationship between Ash and Kendall starts out quite rough. He appears to her, claiming he can grant her three wishes. Sounds like a bad pick-up line to me! It takes a little convincing her to believe he's a fairy. Neither seem to get along, but as they start to realize they have things in common, both become a little less stubborn. I admit, I have a book-crush on Ash - he's protective and has pretty wings! I love the developments between the two! It isn't perfect; it's messy like romance is supposed to be.

Not Your Average Fairytale is a wonderful book for all ages! It is very enjoyable! The descriptions of the characters are perfect and there's an air of magic the reader wishes for themselves. I found myself wanting to check my bedroom for Ash and his wings. Also, Sam. He's a pretty adorable character. This fantasy novel comes to life on the pages and finds home in your imagination! I love the set-up for a sequel, complete with an enticing twist. You won't regret reading this book!

This was a good escape and not what I expected. Chantele is a talented writer and it has been great to get lost in a book and want to pick it up. Worth reading
Kendall & Ash had great rapport & chemistry. They both had nice character growth arcs.
There was fun magic, good danger

Obviously there is more to come. This was a satisfying first book with a strong ending, but also a good tease for what may be in store for book 2.
This was a great pick for a summer read. Sedgwick quickly pulled me into her world and held my interest the entire time. I had a difficult time putting the book down wanting to know what happened next for Ash and Kendle. I enjoyed the descriptions of magic and the magical world Ash lived in. The characters were both real and engaging. It was so good I immediately purchased the sequel. Can't wait to read more.
Not Your Average fairy Tale is such a fun read! You will immediately be enchanted by the many different whimsical characters in the story. It will keep you guessing, and have you rooting for the main characters to win and overcome their misfortune. It is so refreshing to read a romantic, adventurous book that is clean. A quick and exciting read that will leave you wanting more!
I have to say this book was a surprise! I never would have thought to have a male fairy godmother, and I'm sure Ash thought the same thing. Ha!! I thought this was a very original take on a fantasy/fairy tale type story.

Ash seemed to be the type of person who really has everything fall right into his lap. He works hard and therefore, gets what he wants out of life. I really connected with him and liked his character. When he gets this surprise assignment, he tries really hard to make the best of it, even though it's obvious he wants to be anywhere but where he is. His eyes--that's what really got me. ) Silvery blue... Very interesting...

Poor Kendall. I felt so sorry for her. I can't imagine the guilt and pressures she was feeling in life and being a teen makes it all that much harder to deal with. I could easily relate with her skepticism towards Ash. Really?? A fairy godmother?? And a male one at that? Yeah, right.

I loved the build up of their relationship. It was believable. I'm very excited to see what happens next--I hope there's another one!!

Content nothing that stood out to me. Clean.
I needed this book in my life after the heartbreak of the last book I read. I just picked this up because of the title. (yes, I am a title judger and a cover judger as well) And because I haven't read a fairy tale in a while. The name really says it all. Its not like any fariy tale I have ever read. A very cute YA romance. I just kinda sunk right into it. I loved the school for magical creatures and how you had to apprentice to one to graduate. There were all manner of creatures. The Sandman, Master Time, Fairy Godmothers, Centaurs, those goat things (I think they are called satrys) It was rich in magic diversity.

Ash is a sterotypical teenage masculine personality. Pink was for girls and boys don't talk about their feelings. They called other guys tools when they feel threatened and get protective of the ones they care about. He made me feel like a teenager again and I kinda liked it. I just wanna fold him up and stick him in my pocket and carry him around. I'm swear I'm not creepy. But as his character progressed in depth I really began to become invested in him. Not like a cutesy teenage way. He took me on a journey that changed him and I feel differnt for having known him. Again, I'm not creepy talking about fictional characters. I promise.

Kendall was a sweetheart. I liked her immediately. I know what its like to lose a parent albeit not as traumatically as she did. And she was reminded of it everyday which had to be hard. It was easy to identify with her. Although to be fair she was a bit wishy washy when it came to the guy she liked and she could have been a better friend to Tess. The flow was so easy-going and consistent, it was just so good.

Read it, its got a sweet twist at the end that I won't go into. Just read it.

I saw this movie when i was about 12, then I read the book. Many decades later, it's back in my life, so I highly reccomend it for young teens to get a feel for what it was like being pregnant in the 70's.It's a great story with a heart-wrenching ending.

Great book. Read it for the first time in high school. Could never find another copy until I discovered this site. Touching story. A great book for teenagers-especially those teens who are thinking about getting pregnant at a young age.
The book came exactly when I was told. Very happy.
Very good condition. It was a nice reread. Really took me back to those bizarre teenage years. I never got pregnant, thank you, Lord!
This was a very well written book about a 15 year old girl who becomes pregnant and struggles with her life after her baby is born.
I read this book in high school. At that time, 3 girls were pregnant. I talked to them and they said that the issues in this book was true to life. What to do, taking care of the baby financially, the sleepless nights, no time for themselves, their friends not associating with them and two family's problems. I'd this book for pre-teens, boys as well as girls.

From the Publisher Jean de la Fontaine was one of the few great poets of his age and is justly famous for his fables. He was a vivid story-teller, who drew his material from the great stories of Aesop, putting them for the first time into verse.

Many of the fables are moral allegories with animals mirroring human folly and behavior. At the same time, La Fontaine portrays his animals as feeling, even thinking, beings, interspersed throughout the poem with princes, poor men and Olympic gods.

La Faontaine inspired many artists to illustrate his fables. In Gustave Dore he found his most congenial illustrator. Dore had already illustrated many masterpieces of world literature - among them Dante, Balzac and Cervantes, as well as the Bible - and in 1868 he turned his attention to La Fontaine's fables for which he drew pictures with a charm, drama and emotion that have remained unsurpassed to this day.

Dore's illustrations were published in the eighteen-sixties with a translation from the French by Walter Thornbury, whose work is reproduced in this edition.
I ordered and returned 2 copies of this small book from . In both copies, the black and white printing was extremely faded and the page was not in place when the printing took place. On some pages the print started about 1/4 the way down so the bottom 1/4 of the text did not get printed on the page.
Unfortunately the book is a copy (which is not why I'm complaining)...but at least make a good copy of the book. I am a bit dissapointed.
The print job was terrible. I was so disappointed because I was looking forward to reading this book to revisit the tales of my childhood. Not worth your money.
Brought back great childhood memories of my grandmother reading me these timeless fables. Want your child to start on a solid foundation in the French language? Add this treasure to your library.

The Tommy and Tuppence (her real name is Prudence, but no one calls her this) series have a definite sequence. In "The Secret Adversary", they meet (well, re-meet after WWI) and, at the end, are going to get married. They have recently left the service ("been de-mobbed"), so the first book probably takes place in 1919.

This book starts six after that (so it's 1925); they are happily married, but Tuppence wants adventure - in comes "Mr. Carter" from the first book, and offers to let them run a detective agency (about which he has suspicions that it has been used for espionage).

And so Tommy and Tuppence (and Albert!) run a detective agency.

This book is a series of short stories (some in two parts) about those adventures. Some are part of the "arc" of the espionage activities, but several are stand-alone stories.

They also try out various detective methods -- even Agatha Christie's own Hercule Poirot! Some of the detectives I have never read about.

Anyway, because each adventure is a short story, it's easy to read one (or two...) and then put it down to pick up later.

This is a fun read, and critical in the Tommy/Tuppence series.

The next book in the series is "N or M?" and takes place 18-19 years after the events in this story (they have twins; a boy in the RAF and a girl doing nursing); at the same time, it's clearly early days of WW2; enemy aliens haven't even been interned yet. That would make it 1939 or 1940, but that doesn't fit with the twins being as old as they are.

This is a fun collection of related short stories. I really enjoyed reading this book and found that it is now one of my favorites to read because I can read a chapter at a time and still have a full story. The ending is wonderful.
Each chapter is so vividly written that it's like watching a TV series; and then the season finale wraps up the main theme of the book, keeping the view on the edge of his seat. Nothing gory, nothing nasty, just good clean mysteries that build the kind of suspense that won't give you nightmares. Fun.
It is no wonder that after this novella was published Agatha gave up on Tommy & Tuppence for years and years. I think even the 1920's public didn't appreciate these somewhat empty-headed, not flushed out characters, and they read even worse now!
Tommy and Tuppence are my favorite characters by Agatha Christie. Her first short stories with the couple were set in the 1920's, which is a time period I like.
Tommy and Tuppence have returned in "Partners in Crime." (my apologies -- I cannot seem to determine how to italicize while typing this review) This book is not as good as the duo's debut in "The Secret Adversary" or their later adventures in "N or M?" but if you are a fan of Christie, you will probably enjoy this book. Here the young couple set up a sham private detective agency with the assistance of law enforcement in order to bring down a major criminal organization but along the way Tommy and Tuppence solve several mysteries after being hired to locate missing persons, wills, jewels and also manage to solve the odd murder or two. While doing so, the sleuths adopt the personas of famous historical detectives by employing those detectives' methods of observation and investigation.

A pleasant read but not one of Christie's best books. Still, I give it a B- because one or two of the short stories has a nice twist that I did not see coming.
It’s not as good as the Poirot or Marple novels, but it’s not meant to be. Written at a time when Christie was experimenting with different strategies, it’s great fun. Tuppence and Tommy traipse through different mysteries, emulating famous detectives popular during the era. They nab dope smugglers, solve impossible alibis, and find out who killed the heiress. Great for a quick read before bed, but it certainly won’t keep me up at night. Also, I found the puzzles to be unfair, as there would be an important clue left out until the solution is given, but maybe I’m just missing it.
Great book. Contains lots of great funny short stories featuring Tuppence and her husband Tommy. If you love Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Piorte, Father Brown or any other old time mystery author you'll love this. Each short story has the main characters pretending to be a famous novel detective in order to help them solve their case while also doing thing their own way. Helping them is the ever so helpful Albert who fits right in to their crazy little world. Enjoy, Laugh, and solve mysteries.

Amelia was the only bright spot. She was everything we love in a heroine, kind, intelligent, vivacious. After six years, David was still mourning the loss of his beloved wife.

Amelia, abducted by a wastrel, was being taken to Gretna Green. David and Amelia were friends of long standing and he rescued Amelia, marrying her to avoid her ruination. From the outset, David made it clear that he'll only marry to gain a stepmother for his daughter; he and his bride will be friends and companions and Amelia understood this. Okay.

But while I empathized with David for quite a long while, an entire novel's worth of his angst just wore me down. He didn't behave as a friend; he ignored her for days, tried to install her in a bedroom meant for servants, gave her no support when his servants disregarded her. She was shown little simple respect and courtesy by him. IMO Amelia was heroic and had to put up with way too much. Amelia was multi-dimensional. David was rather flat except for the all-consuming grief. That was thoroughly defined. I reached a point where I couldn't stand Katherine (the dear departed) and was pretty sick of David's moping.

There were some sub-plots that seemed so incongruous within the story that they were distracting. A couple were obvious pitches for the next book.

Finally, the ending was very rushed and just too pat. The least satisfying I've read in a long time. I like to finish a romance novel smiling and picturing the characters' happy future. This didn't leave that glow for me. The H was still thinking of the dead wife in the epilogue!

These are not your soft-core bodice-rippers, with mannered ladies and gentlemen, tea in the parlor and innuendo on the veranda. You will find real sex, real passion, and real hot underwear in these novels!

Of the four books in the Secrets in Silk series, this is the closest to a conventional historical romance. Young Amelia is focused on the handsome Viscount of her dreams, ignoring the counsel of her older sister, her aunt, and the kindly widower, the Earl of Castledon. In fact, she reacts to Castledon's advice with a challenge of her own. She will draw up a list of young women who will serve his need for a stepmother for his daughter, and he will give her a list of men to pursue and to avoid.

Amelia puts her prim sister Margaret's name on the list of prospects for Castledon to consider. Not surprisingly, the Viscount is at the top of Castledon's list to avoid. When the rakish Viscount kidnaps Amelia away to Scotland so they can be married without her parents' consent, Amelia needs to reconsider where her heart (and her passion) lies.
So far, this is my favorite book in the series, probably because of Amelia. The baby of the family, Amelia Andrews is true to the reputation of the youngest sibling. She's a bit flighty, precocious, nosy about secret things, and quick to bend or disobey the rules. In the past her cute innocence has probably gotten her out of several punishments, so she isn't concerned with bending the rules.
At the age of 14 two of Amelia's three sisters were attending balls and parties with hopes of finding a suitable husband. Amelia being too young to participate, she was relegated to spend time at her mother's or aunt's side. British custom forbid her to speak to a man without a chaperone present, and preferably not at all. (Try that today!)
In her own resourceful way, Amelia strikes up an ongoing conversation with David Hartford, the Earl of Castledon, a grieving widower. It would be scandalous for a young lady to be speaking to a gentleman without a chaperone present. Ever creative, Amelia positions herself with her back to the Earl, and talks freely. Wow, does she talk freely. Amelia doesn't seem to stop talking. She's not familiar with embarrassment, sharing her thoughts and feelings without filters. The Earl is only attending the events because he has promised his daughter that he would remarry so she would have a mother.
At 33, David Hartford is 13 years Amelia's senior. His wife has been dead for 6 years, leaving him with a 5-year old daughter (now 11).
Skipping a lot of details here, Amelia was drugged and kidnapped from a ball one evening, right under everyone's nose. Her older sister, Margaret, was charged with her care that event. When she couldn't see her, Margaret enlisted the Earl's help locating her. After realizing she had been captured by an unwanted, womanizing suitor, who needed to marry a heiress to pay off his gambling debts.
Margaret took one route to Scotland and David the other, both knowing a woman could be married there without her father's permission. David found her first, beat the kidnapper, and rescued the damsel-in-distress. British societal norms being what they were, a woman was disgraced after spending a night alone with a man, no matter the circumstance. Of course the Earl agrees to marry her. His stipulations were that it would be a marriage of friendship, sans love, providing a mother for his daughter. Amelia will have his name and a title, a daughter, and enough money to buy whatever she wants. Anything but love that's reserved for his first wife and only love. His grief causes him to often act cold, seem uncaring, and even cruel.
The story has some twists, turns, and surprises, but allows plenty of time for the characters to develop. It's a sweet story, book three of four in the series.
David is a widower Earl with an 11 year old daughter who needs a step-mother. Amelia is a noble's daughter, younger than David, but a good friend. She is 1/2 in love with a rogue viscount and is trying to help match David up with a woman to marry and wants his help in snaring the rogue. They make each other a list of suggestions and the quest is on.
Because they re friends, he tries her suggestions, and she barrels ahead with her ideas. Things come to a head and they end up married.
Nasty twists and turns force them to resolve their differences and move towards a good ending.
Excellent novel by an author who is new to me. She is worth reading. The pace is good, the intrigue suspenseful, and the readers involvement emotionally involved! Look forward to more by this author!

First off this book has actually been in my possession for an embarrassing almost two years and I don't know what kept me from it, given that I originally purchased it based on Leila's review over at Bookshelves of Doom. And she never steers me wrong. But I did undergo a pregnancy in between buying NORTHLANDER and reading it and so maybe that had something to do with it. Those pregnancies. They can wreak havoc on your mental state. In any event, I was pleased to see it pop up as the selection for this last month, particularly as I had heard the sequel had been published in the intervening time and I was looking forward to being able to run right out and read the second book if I ended up loving Meg Burden's first Tale of the Borderlands. That's the only good thing about waiting to read the first in a series, isn't it? And I held the knowledge of a sequel out before me like a promise. But more on that later.

Ellin Fisher and her father have come to the Northlands in secret and under pain of death. Her father--a noted Southling healer--has been summoned illegally to work his arts on the Northlands King. The king is dying and none of the leeches they call healers in the North have been able to do anything to ease his pain or stop the rapid decline. And so a few of his highest councilors do the unthinkable and smuggle a hated Southling healer and his red-haired daughter into the royal city as a last resort. Despite the fact that the king has specifically outlawed evil Southling magic and despite the fact that their southern neighbors are looked down upon like the plague. And so Ellin finds herself forced to hide out in a country where she is reviled and watch her father attempt to save the life of a man who would have them both flayed alive if he knew they set foot in his kingdom or dared to lay even a finger on his royal person. Then one freezing night Ellin is out fetching the ingredients her father needs and returns to the city gates only to be turned away on the grounds that she has no papers. And it turns out that the young guard who so acrimoniously shuts her out in the cold is the king's youngest son Garreth. But when Prince Garreth realizes it is Ellin's father who stands the only chance of saving his father and that Ellin herself possesses an unusually gifted talent for healing as well, things become a little more complicated. As Ellin works to reconcile the unfriendly, raw land she's come to with the friendship of Garreth and his older brothers her perspective begins to change and it is only the first in a long line of shocks she will have to endure before she and her father will be allowed to return home. If they aren't killed first.

I fell into step with Meg Burden's writing style from the first page. The easy, fluid writing reminded me a bit of early Tamora Pierce and Patricia McKillip, with a little bit of The Blue Sword thrown in for good measure. Ellin's relationship with her father is a strong one, even though they occasionally keep things from each other because of their love and desire not to see the other hurt. Her mother's death was hard on them both and it's a difficult and dangerous process allowing yourself to care about more people who might betray you by dying at any time. Which is why the Northlands princes pose a particularly uncomfortable problem for Ellin as it becomes clear that it will be impossible to hate them, with their blond hair and boyish charm and the way they seem to have of including her in their escapades. Even grumpy, dumpy Coll who is only interested in horses and wants Ellin in his home about as much as he wants an incurable disease. And they all clearly love their father, tyrant though he may be, and that is an emotion Ellin can relate to. Here is a scene early on, in which Ellin begins to see the castle and its inhabitants in a slightly different light:

He leads me through the hall Garreth brought me in and then into the castle's great room, where I stop with a quiet gasp and look around. I had thought this place dark and forbidding, but now, with sunlight streaming through the high windows, I realize I was wrong.

The darkness made all the furniture look black and heavy, but now I see that the large tables are deep red, with carved legs and polished to gleaming. The banners and tapestries are richly dyed, scarlet and deep green and dark blue and gold. And they're beautiful, worked with ornate pictures of wolves and horses and snow cats and other Northlands creatures. A fire crackles orange in the huge hearth, keeping the room warm despite its size, and benches and chairs are gathered in front of it, waiting for a storyteller and listeners to pass the cold nights.

Ahead of me, Erik stops and turns. "What's the matter?"

"This place," I say slowly, still dazzled. "It's beautiful."

He looks around, too, and shrugs."This? It's not bad."

I shake my head, realizing that this room has to be larger than the main room at Alder's inn, back home in Harnon. "It's so big. How many people live here?"

"At the castle?" Erik's brows pull together in thought. "Well, there's Da, and us. That's six. Nan and her girls make ten, add the stable boys, Jana the cook, Lord Ivan, Lord Erfold the Wise and his wife, Master Thorvald the Physician, Master Fenrik the Smith and his family . . ." he shrugs. "Twenty-five? Thirty? Alaric would know exactly, and could tell you without blinking an eye," he adds with a grin. "I'm not really sure."

I nod, a little overwhelmed at the idea of living with so many people. "So, do they call you Erik the Uncertain?" I ask, teasing, as we leave the room.

He grins again. "Erik Archer. Actually."

"Because you're as quick to shoot with a bow as you are with your mouth?"

"Not as quick as you," he retorts, half-laughing. "Or as sharp, apparently."

"And the others?"

"Well, they call Alaric the Golden."

"I know that one."

He nods. "And then Coll Horse Master. Officially, at least," Erik adds with a wicked smile. "Everyone calls him Coll the Fat, though."

"And he doesn't mind?" I ask, trying not to giggle.

"Course not. He is, isn't he?" Erik waves one hand dismissively. "Then there's me; they call Finn--actually Finnlay, by the way--'the Deaf,' of course, and Garreth the Youngest."

"I see Northlander names aren't always flattering."

"No. But they're always true."

The characters in this book surprise each other. They live in a world of absolutes and yet somehow manage to reach across borders--quite literally--and form friendships where only enmity existed before. That is why I loved them and NORTHLANDER. They succeeded in surprising and endearing themselves to me and all I wanted to do was spend more time with them. Not to mention the enticingly dangled hints at the real history between these two countries and these two families and what it might mean down the road.

And so we come to the subject of the sequel. By all accounts, The King Commands--the second installment in the Tales of the Borderlands--was published on April 12th of this year. That's right. Just under two months ago. And yet an actual copy of this book is nowhere to be found. Or it's going for more than $50 used here on Amazon, which amounts to the same thing for me. What gives? I know some of you out there have read it. So help a girl out. What happened to make this book disappear in so short a time? I'm mystified. I realize Brown Barn Books is a small publisher and so on, but did they only print like ten of them and then, once those were gone, that was it?! Because, if so, then I have a problem on my hands. I need this book. I'm going insane here. I have to find out what happens to Ellin Fisher Healer, to Alaric the Golden, to Finn the Deaf, to Erik Archer, and, of course, Garreth the Youngest. Who can help me? Anyone?

Northlander arrived in the mail today, and I immediately sat down on the front porch and started reading. And I didn't stop for three hours except for the ten minutes while I ate supper.

Now, I'd already been lucky enough to read the first few chapters online a couple months ago, so I knew some of the characters already. I can't begin to tell you how much I LOVE these characters. The five Northland princes, Ellin the Southland 'witch-girl', Ellin's wonderful, loving father. The relationship between Ellin and her father was so great, it made me think about my own relationship with my father.

The plot is exciting, and each time I started thinking, "Oh, I see where this is going", I was proved wrong. Not that I thought that very often, anyway.

I don't want to talk too much about it, because I don't want to spoil you at all for the story. Let's just say that in the Northlands, all Southlanders are reviled. They're seen as lower than low because of their red hair and their predisposition to the healing arts. They're required to carry papers, and if a Southlander wears clothes, they're fit for nothing but burning afterwards. Yet Southlander Ellin and her father are the only people who have the ability to save the life of the Northlander king, and as healers, they feel compelled to try, even if they endanger themselves by breaking the law to do so. Because of Ellin's bravery, momentous events are set into motion, and danger threatens from several sources. She has to rely on her wits and the new talents that are awakening inside her to keep her alive--and she can't tell who to trust.

It's a riveting story, and I found it both emotionally moving and engaging.
Having traveled with her father, a master healer, hastily and in secret from the Southlands, Ellin Fisher quickly learns she is neither liked nor wanted in the cold Northlands. Both of which are made perfectly clear one night when she is locked outside the city gates -- during a blizzard -- simply for having the red hair of a Southling. Fuming and in danger of freezing to death, Ellin takes refuge in a guard cottage only to be intruded upon by the same guard who earlier denied her entrance. Only this guard is now crying his heart out over the impending death of his father. The King of the Northlands. Whose father Ellin came to heal (I'm sure you can imagine his change of heart). Not willing to stand by when perhaps she can help, Ellin convinces the young Prince Garreth to taking her to the King's bedside where she attempts an illegal healing using abilities she has is still only learning herself. Of course, by taking that first step into the King's presence, Ellin is brought into the inner circle of the five young Northern princes whose world she is about to turn upside down. That is, if they don't manage to muck hers up first.

Northlander stole my heart. I found it extremely refreshing to see such a character like Ellin who is constantly out of her element but who is still willing to learn and admit to her mistakes. And constant is the key here. It seemed as if Ellin flew head-first from one dangerous adventure to another, yet I never once felt that her story was forced or implausible. Unexpected, yes -- but still utterly believable in context. The five Northern Princes were also a complete breath of fresh air! Alaric, Coll, Finn, Erik, and Garreth all stole my heart in their own way (probably around the time they each wormed their way into Ellin's heart too). Meg Burden did an excellent job of creating believable and unique relationships between Ellin and each of the Princes. Seldom do you find YA books that manage to include well-drawn friendships between males and females. Northlander is one of those rare books that will continually surprise you with it's endearing characters over and over again.
First off this book has actually been in my possession for an embarrassing almost two years and I don't know what kept me from it, given that I originally purchased it based on Leila's review over at Bookshelves of Doom. And she never steers me wrong. But I did undergo a pregnancy in between buying NORTHLANDER and reading it and so maybe that had something to do with it. Those pregnancies. They can wreak havoc on your mental state. In any event, I was pleased to see it pop up as the selection for this last month, particularly as I had heard the sequel had been published in the intervening time and I was looking forward to being able to run right out and read the second book if I ended up loving Meg Burden's first Tale of the Borderlands. That's the only good thing about waiting to read the first in a series, isn't it? And I held the knowledge of a sequel out before me like a promise. But more on that later.

Whenever I’m in the mood for a fun summer read, something with a bit of humor and romance and a southern setting, I reach for a Mary Kay Andrews book – that’s her specialty and she never fails to deliver.

Location scout Greer Hennessy is tasked with finding a town that represents “old Florida”; somewhere far from tourists and theme parks. She finds the perfect spot in tiny Cypress Key, but runs into a roadblock when the town’s mayor, Eben Thibadeaux, has some reservations about having a big-budget film crew descending on his hometown. Greer manages to persuade Eben that a touch of Hollywood will be a boon to the local economy, but once filming gets underway chaos (and romance) ensues.

I really enjoyed this. The author does a great job describing Cypress Key, and by the time the book ended I was ready to toss my flip-flops into a suitcase and go searching for this fictional beach town. The characters are wonderful, really nicely developed and relatable. The story revolves around a major film being shot on location, and there are a lot of behind-the-scene movie-making details that I found interesting as well as entertaining. There’s a little mix of everything in this story: romance, heartache, grief, forgiveness, humor - all skillfully woven together to create a totally satisfying read.

This was the perfect story to get lost in as summer winds down here and autumn begins to creep closer and closer. I may not be able to hold on to summer forever, but I can experience it vicariously thru Ms. Andrews’ writing, and that may just be the next best thing.

I could not put this book down. I started reading this book a few months ago and life happened. I finally picked it up and was able to start right where I left off. This time I did not stop reading until I was finished. Greer never imagined her life changing so much so quickly but when Eb showed up it all changed. Mary Kay Andrews did a great job keeping you engaged wandering what would happen next. As soon as the book ended (which I will not give away here), I wanted to know what was going to happen next in Greer and Eb's life.I felt like I was their best friends along for the ride.
My least favorite MKA novel yet. Actually seemed like a different author for the most part. The sex scene was just bizarre and (at least to me) inappropriate. Although I finished the book it was painful. Luckily I bought it used and that penny I paid for it was about all its worth. It's back to "Savannah Blues" and "Hissy Fit" for me!

Mary Kay Andrews once again delivers a good summer read. I enjoyed the hero, glasses and all. Her heroine, Greer, had a refreshingly , new occupation as a location scout and manager. I like learning new information while reading.
This was an pleasant read with a predictable romance between the two main characters. I had high hopes for their romance but it was predictable. I thought the heroine fell into bed much to easily and that she didn’t really have good reason for running away from Eb in the middle of the night. Eb the hero was much better drawn as a character. I liked the characterization of “Messiah Syndrome” for Eb. It seemed to fit him.
Andrews creates believable female characters to people the pages and to flesh out the novel. I felt for Allie all the way through. Being a teenage is always a difficult time for any girl and I cheered for as she battled her way through being taken in first by Kregg and secondly her realization of her father’s true character.
I would recommend this book as light reading and perfect to pick up and pick up again as I often do during the busy summertime.
Let me begin by stressing how much it pains me to give a Three Star Review for this book. I am a very loyal fan of Ms. Andrews, I absolutely adore her work.

It's been some years now since I read my first book by Mary Kay Andrews. I honestly can't recall if it was Hissy Fit or one of her other books that I first read. What I do remember was being absolutely captivated and mesmerized by how perfectly she was able to capture the true heart and spirit of the south.

Hollywood has long had such skewed preconceived notions of how us southern ladies are, and so to find an author who had truly captured the heart of the south and the spirit of the southern woman was so refreshing. She nailed it with Hissy Fit and her portrayal of a southern woman scorned.

The last few books have been a little different feeling than the earlier books I had fell in love with, yet they still managed to feel "southern". Beach Town to me seemed to lack the trademark Mary Kay Andrews "Southern, Sassy woman".

In Beach Town, we are taken to a remote old school southern beach town called Cypress Bay. Greer Hennesy, a Hollywood location scout, has been tasked with the impossible, finding an uncommercialized beach that has the feel of a remote and almost forgotten beach town. However, Cypress Bay is just the right location, it has all the qualities that the director is looking for.

Most of the locals are more than thrilled to discover that Hollywood is descending on their little town. However, the mayor and "Jack of all trades", Eb Thibadeaux is less than impressed by the bright lights and the big name stars. The mayor is more concerned with how this whole movie situation can have a negative impact on their small community.

When the director and writer of "Beach Town" has inspiration strike and sets his heart on having an explosive ending, the tensions between the Mayor and Greer only escalate. Seems the crew and Greer have their sites set on a local historic landmark "casino" and they have plans to not only fix it up to feature it in their movie, they also have the casino in mind for their "explosive" ending.

With a cast of characters that are more Hollywood than "Southern charm", this book feels different than Mary Kay Andrews trademark style. Don't get me wrong this was a good book, but the storyline didn't pull me in and grab my attention. Generally when reading a Mary Kay Andrews book, it takes me two nights TOPS to finish. However, this one it took at least a week to finish.

I just didn't find myself really connecting with these characters, I didn't feel any emotional connection to what happened to them. I wasn't rooting for any of the characters. It just lacked anything that made me feel immersed in the story.

The last chapter or two, I finally felt invested in the story and it got exciting a bit. However Beach Town is a long long way from the quirky and lovable imperfect southern characters in Hissy Fit and Savannah Blues and other of Mary Kay Andrews books.

I hope that this is a "one-off" and that Mary Kay Andrews goes back to the types of characters that we have come to expect to find in her books. For me Beach Town just totally missed the mark and didn't even feel anything like a Mary Kay Andrews book. I literally felt as if I could have been reading any ol' book by any ol' author. It just was severly lacking in character and heart.

It literally pains me to have to say anything less than glowing things about Mary Kay Andrews. Afterall, there's no way that I could do anything near as good as Beach Town, but as an avid reader and lover of Ms. Andrews work, I just have to give my honest opinion.

I'm not going to give too much away, but I started out really liking this book. It was a cutesy take on a paranormal romance. Megan attempts to spend her Christmas at the cabin she shared with her husband who unfortunately passed away two years prior. Owen comes into her life (not going to give that part away) and Megan has to learn to let go and find love again. A timely story for Christmas. And I really wanted to give this book 5 stars, and had every intention of doing so until Laura ruined it with the political slant on climate change and the world needs saved. I'll give it 3 stars because up until the near end, I really liked it. Being the holidays I was looking for a feel good story-I just could have done without the political opinion. When I fist saw this book I was excited it was part of a series. I won't be reading the rest of them. But, to each their own.

Frosty the snowman meets global warming and the result is charming and very sexy, (no spoilers here, just read it). This book is very well edited so I have only one criticism and this goes out to the vast majority of romance writers who make the same mistake, (using a word incorrectly time and time again does not change it's definition)...PRONE means face down, SUPINE means back down. To put it in sexual terms, in the missionary position it is the man who is prone and the woman who is supine...look it up.
Forgive me, it has become a personal mission to make this understood.
Megan is a twenty nine year old widow and is spending Christmas at the cabin her and her husband spent every Christmas at. He’s been gone two years and her family worries about her. Megan goes outside and builds a snow family. When she wakes up later, there is a man on her doorstep. Owen is a god of winter and has been sent to help Megan find love again. The cold makes him stronger and he can control the wind and snow. If he gets warm he starts to melt. If he can get Megan to fall in love with him, he’ll be able to stay forever. There is a bump in their plans, he has just one week because the god of spring has decided for spring to come early.
I felt bad for Megan because of her losing her husband so young. Owen wanted her love so bad but she was afraid of losing him. Owen is funny and so very sweet. Megan doesn’t realize how strong she really is. An awesome story that’ll leave you with a good feeling in your heart.
Well that was just awesome. I had read a good handful or her other books before this, the Hard series and loved her work. When I saw this book cover I immediately liked the background image of the snowy cabin so bought it. At this point I know I like her writing and style and don't even read the descriptions before purchasing. I love to support the creative people who make great works of art.

I will say the beginning of the book really truly hit home for me. I'm originally from Chicago but moved to California about 8 years ago. I miss the different seasons to say the least. So in reading this book I was simply in awe of feeling like I was being transported back in time to childhood and young adult memories of winter and Christmas. I lost my first love young about 10 years younger than the main character in this book. Between those two things this book was like a beautiful, emotional and wonderful healing. So for anyone who misses winter, snow, or just wishes to re-experience a different kind of Christmas I would highly recommend this book. I really can't put into words how beautiful the story is and honestly I'm just left feeling so impressed by this author for creating such a deep and emotional story that's uplifting.

Oh and I had no idea the author wrote fantasy sci-fi type works lol so this book was a wonderful surprise!
This is my first ever "paranormal" read. I was hesitant at first because I have never been into these kind of stories. But, I was really looking for a bit of a change from my usually reads and the synapses just pulled me in.

To say I'm glad I decided to read it, is an understatement. This book was absolutely amazing! I was enthralled and pulled in from the very first paragraph. Thank God it was my day off, because once I started reading, I simply could not stop, it was that good.

The best part about it was Megan's situation was one that had, unfortunately, happened to so many people, it made the story that much more believeable. The entire story felt so real, I was pulled in so deep, that I felt like I was in the story with them. Owen's character is every woman dream. I'm pretty sure every woman wants to be loved, wanted and needed the way Owen did Megan. He was sweet, funny, charismatic, sexy and oh so perfect. I laughed, I smiled, I cried and swooned through the entire book. There wasn't a moment I wasn't utterly there with them. I never knew a story like this could capture my heart the way this one did.

This is definitely one of my favorite top five books I've read this year. I am so excited to read more of Laura's work. Believe me, if I could give it more than five stars, I absolutely would! Thank you Laura for such an incredible story.
I'm not going to give too much away, but I started out really liking this book. It was a cutesy take on a paranormal romance. Megan attempts to spend her Christmas at the cabin she shared with her husband who unfortunately passed away two years prior. Owen comes into her life (not going to give that part away) and Megan has to learn to let go and find love again. A timely story for Christmas. And I really wanted to give this book 5 stars, and had every intention of doing so until Laura ruined it with the political slant on climate change and the world needs saved. As one might expect, this short novel is an amusing take of the Famous Five in a modern context. It deals with the Five facing the problems of deciding to have a healthy diet and the consequences of this new lifestyle. As you can imagine, there are plenty of references to spiralizers, chia seeds, kale etc..

Reasonably funny with as couple of laugh-out-loud moments, this is a pleasant enough experience and worth a visit. Quite enjoyable and the best of the three that I've read (Brexit Island and Parenting being the others).
Waste of time reading it
This a cute little story and if you like English humor, you will like this delightful book!

I liked the movie. I thought it was fun. It eventually led me to read this book. I think the book is of its time. It reads like a young adult novel, with an emphasis on the adversity in which the protagonist was raised. I read it to the end, always hoping it would be better. It just never panned out. It was very linear storytelling. There were no real surprises.

Enjoyed the authors writing style and will read more from him. Book subject was very interesting and I appreciated the history lessons interspersed.

David Rice is a highly intelligent, well read, seventeen year old boy, who has been physically and verbally abused by his father for years. Abandoned by his mother, Mary, when he was twelve, because David's father, her husband, also battered her, David decides that he cannot take any more abuse. In a moment of great personal angst, he discovers that he can teleport himself to a safe place. So, begins a new life for David and a most excellent adventure for the reader.

David, to his own amazement, can teleport, but there there is a method to the madness, which he soon discovers. His new ability, however, enables him to not have to return home. He, instead, starts a new life for himself, one which the reader will enjoy sharing, as his new found ability, which he calls "jumping", leads to many interesting situations. Some of the situations in which he gets involved turn him into an unusual sort of super hero. Inventive and absorbing, this is a very special coming of age story that will keep the reader turning the pages.

The only problem with the book is that many of David's initial problems, while on his own, arise out of his lack of a social security number. This is a highly unlikely case scenario, because David would have needed a social security number for some of the standardized tests a student is required to take, as the social security number would act as the student's identification number. Moreover, his father would have needed David's social security number in order to claim him as a deduction on his income tax return. This is, however, the only false note in this otherwise totally delightful tale of a young man with powers of teleportation and the ways in which he puts his ability to use.
A good book which I kept thinking "I wish it were better". This is an amazing story which kept my attention, but something is missing and I cannot put my finger on it. I wanted to tell the story my way, which, with a great author, you should never have that feeling.
While I enjoyed the trip across the United States with these two characters and the unusual characters they met along the way the book never seemed to feel completely unified. Perhaps that is what the author wanted but I always felt like the three characters in the story—the author, the doctor and the brain—never connected fully. Still an enjoyable read with all kinds of insights into the life of Albert Einstein to research.
The premise of this book isn't bad; it's just never really developed as it could have been. Several potential directions are hinted at, but are never explored, such as others with the ability the main character displays, or possibly trying to understand how the central figure does what he does. Not bad... just expect to spend the last quarter of the book reading the same phrases over and over.
I recommend this book to everyone. many people think they don't like science fiction. Or books. So this is the book I recommend to everyone like that. It's a very easy read. Fast paced. Page turner. It makes you think. It's clever. It's fun. Nothing like the movie. There is only one jumper in this book on the entire planet. In the movie there are many. Anyway I read about 50 books per year and this is my number one goto book to recommend to people who don't read as much as me.
I really enjoyed this book. I can see why they made a movie and TV show about it. The characters were great. The plot was captivating. The story was interesting.

There were a few problems. There was too much profanity in this story for young children. This book also joins with other media in encouraging sexual relations before marriage.

I've read some of Steven's latest work and found it much improved in this area.

Funny stuff right there. This book is great for two reasons. One it has some of the best cartoons ever produced by Gary Larson. Two, it has a lot of his thinking on what went into the cartoon, so they make more sense and you can see variations on some of them even. A must read full of laughs!
I have been a fan of The Far Side for many years and have several of his books, and this one is the best by far. Clearly I have a sick sense of humor (ha) as I often found the cartoons that were rejected by the editor/publisher far funnier than the published versions. This book is a must for every true Far Side fan who has a sense of humor and doesn't take themselves (or anyone else, of any species) too seriously. For anyone who is politically correct or easily offended, this book isn't for you.
This is a wonderful book that not only has hundreds of cartoons but also allows you to get to know Gary Larson better. On many cartoons he will give you a description on why he did the cartoon; and the history around a certain cartoon. I loughed me rear off since many of these cartoons in this book have not been released anywhere else. Some are rather risky and not intended for newpapers since they are just a ltter further from the "Far Side". I loved the book and wish he had more like this one.....
One day I was told I had weird and peculiar thoughts. Later, I found out I think like Gary Larson. Does a "Slow Children" sign mean the children are "mentally slow" or "physically slow" or "drive through our neighborhood slowly"?

This book takes you into the original thoughts and sketches by Larson, then shows the final cartoon. Great fun reading!
...a delight, especially the first half..Gary Larson walks us through his early efforts, simply, with humor, of course....He shows incomplete sketches, what he originally thought, and how the actual caption was decided. He gives examples of cartoons which were rejected by editors and why, cartoons never printed, those printed with changes by editors, responses from readers who completely missed the intent, and many of his personal favorites. ...I loved feeling as if I had been allowed into the creative process of this honest, gifted humorist ..Anyone who loves Gary Larson would treasure this book.
I like The Far Side, but I love this book. It's a fascinating look behind the scenes of the strip, and a glance inside Larson's mind. And while it's not necessarily a "Best-Of" collection, the cartoons selected ARE some of his best. Essential.
I don't really know much about Gary Larson. He's not like Bill Watterson (i.e. a recluse), but he really doesn't show up on a day to day basis, especially not after he's retired from his comic strip. There is a 2020 interview with him from the 1980s on youtube, but I've never really gotten to examine his personality until I read this collection. And hotdog, did I enjoy reading it!

The PreHistory of the Far Side is a collection Gary put together on the 10th Anniversary of his globally loved comic strip, The Far Side. In it, he talks about how and when he got into comics ("You're sick! But I love your work!"), his view of comedy, particular strips that were milestones for him ("Cow Tools") and, my favorite part, the comics that offended people with some hate mail printed next to them.

I love comics and I always have, especially unique comics strips modeled for the newspaper, but I haven't laughed this hard at a comic collection since I was a child. Gary seems to me like a meek and mild-mannered character with a love of Biology (especially the gross/disturbing parts) but with a very grotesque and incisive sense of humor. With that in mind, it was fantastic to read some of his greatest hits (that we've all seen before), then read reactions/events behind the hits, then read his reaction to those reactions/events behind the hits and so on.

If you're a hardcore Far Side fan, buy this book. If you've gotten a single Far Side greeting card in your life, buy this book. It's hilarious and you won't regret owning it. For those that have purchase the recent "Complete Far Side" boxed set collection, that collection doesn't touch on some of the stories that Gary touches on in this book, so buy this book as well!

Okay, truth...my daughter is 10 and in the 5th grade. Grandpa, an avid reader like myself, went out on a limb and bought the book for her last Easter. We struggle to find books that are in her 8.4-9.5 reading level, have age appropriate content with a plot she has the life experiences to connect to and comprehend, that are also challenging AND interest her...tall order. We have read all the popular series - adore Harry Potter, of course; tore through the "Greggor the Overlander" series, etc. - so even though in previewing the series I noticed it contains some very minor-vanilla...no F-bombs or S$$T level, mature-type language, and there are a couple scenes that hint at an intimate relationship in book 2 (trying not to spoil books), I gave the book a green light. We started reading it together, taking turns reading aloud, and were BOTH immediately, read 30-40 pages at a time, wake up needing to see what happens to Celena, come home from school hoping to fit in a read and "see what Celena has gotten up to now" before dance, hooked like I have never seen her before!!! And while she is an awesome reader, she is not, by any means a sit & read person, preferring to dance, sing, socialize, game, etc...yet another challenge to add to the list. The challenged are important to note because the way Maas has crafted the characters has achieved what NO OTHER series has for my daughter, and that is to draw her in to the point she NEEDS to keep reading, every single day. The characters are beautifully developed to the point where my daughter was crying when she thought her favorite character died, and was angry at who did die. Maas has painstaking developed 3-dimensional characters that are ever evolving, and that are relatable to all ages. She has also created an entirely new setting that is similar enough to other books of the same genre, like Hunger Games (she has read/watched all), yet it is entirely new & fresh. The writing is clear & thought-provoking, and she weaves in asides & flashbacks that challenge and engage readers. We have had the most incredible conversations and my daughter has made multiple connections to other texts, movies, life, and especially music/song lyrics while reading. These connections are the reason I personally & professionally recommend the series to children beginning at age 10 who are reading at a 6.5-7+ grade level, primarily due to the challenging vocabulary. The twists and turns, the co afflicts & themes, character interactions, vivid & selected detailing, and obviously careful/thoughtful word choices make this series, in my opinion, an award winning, best selling series. As a reading specialist and 18 year veteran teacher of struggling readers, I fully give not just this book, but the entire series 5 stars! I could rave on and on...but I don't want to give away a single detail and only, sincerely hope what I have shared has piqued your curiosity enough to give the series a try yourself, along with a loved one, and that through sharing our personal experiences with the books I have helped answer the question of reader age appropriateness & interest level. Buckle up...it's a wild, wonderful ride through Adarlan!

Please note: I am reading the series aloud with my daughter, so as we go we just naturally, out of habit, change cuss words to "gosh" and "darn.," and the intimacy scenes were handled as follows: "A., this next chapter has Choal and Celeana interacting like a married couple sometimes do in private. Shall we read or skip?" Reply, "Well, um is it very like detailed?" Me: "Nah, it's pretty vague." A: "Well, I know she shouldn't be doing that stuff because they are not married, but let's just read it...it's not like I'm embarrassed or going to act like that myself...ewwww!" (Love the sweetness this age!) Basically, here is my point and yes I have one... if you take the time to first, preview what you will read with your child later; second, spend the time to read aloud with your child; third, talk to your child & maintain open dialogue, all the time, about everything, just as though they are the adults-in-training they really are (not saying talk like you are buddies, peers, or equals), the content of a fictional novel is not going to become controversial or be outrageous to them, throwing them into a tizzy of misadventure and exploits! So yes, while, the series is for ages 14+, I still maintain that WITH parental supervision/accompaniment, this is an incredible series to read together!

Crown of Midnight Throne of Glass Sarah J Maas Books Reviews

I believe I'm going to have a love-hate relationship with this series. I'm breezing through them rather quickly, and yet I'm not LOVING them the way I feel like I should. I recall hearing that this was "A Song of Fire and Ice for the younger set" and I was rather excited about that idea. It doesn't quite seem to be that, though.

This novel was rather hard for me to read. It suffered from Second Book Syndrome - a lot going on and being explained and yet not a lot happening. I like the lore and fantasy elements that are coming into focus, however a lot of the elements felt messy and thrown together.

I must admit that I'm also still rather indifferent when it comes to Celaena and Chaol. Celaena is still vain, shallow, selfish, and oddly unintelligent for the greatest assassin in the land. Chaol is increasingly annoying, ignorant, and pompous. Maybe they are made for each other. Or maybe they are a bit too much. I felt a bit like the romance really took over the novel. I wanted a lot more world building and just got a whole lot of romance.

Really, it's the story of the past and the fantasy elements that are keeping my interest. I'm really hoping as more characters come into the picture, I'll have more stories to be interested in.
Well, holy cow. I don't even know where to start...

This book. This series. These characters. THIS AUTHOR.

We are in full on queen mode in Queen of Shadows, obviously. Hence the title. Calaena shows up some, for the sake of appearances, but she has completely accepted her heritage and now goes by Aelin. She's still the intense, no nonsense, scary-as-heck chick we've all grown to know and love, but there's tons more to her character that we only got a glimpse of in Heir of Fire. She's ready to go and taking names. Like literally taking names as she crosses the ocean back to Adarlan. Her cockiness and downright meanness in the first two books really rubbed me the wrong way at times. You can't help but to be drawn to her character, but the things she said and did were.. disturbing, to say the least. And she still has that fire, but there is so much more depth to her now that she has accepted who she truly is and, in the process, is opening her heart again to the people she loves instead of shutting them out and running off of pure rage. Her complexity makes her one of the best female protagonists I've ever read.

We start out back in Rifthold, and at this point everything is up in the air. We know why she's there and who she's after, but how she's going to go about doing this is anyone's guess. I will say this, A LOT gets resolved in this book. Granted, there are plenty of other monumental surprises that step into take their place, but I was surprised by how many plot lines got tied up. I was expecting two for sure, but the third one threw me for a complete loop. If anyone says they predicted that to happen, they are a liar. And my goodness, these last two books are going to be downright scary. I was on pins and needles the entire time. You thought present Erilea was bad.. it's about to get wayyyy worse.

And as for the book being 650 pages.. Why are people upset about this?! I say, the more the better!

Now onto the other characters, because there are quite a few POVs in this book...

I've always been partial to Dorian, so being in his POV was absolute torture. The ending of HoF about sent me over the edge and I didn't even want to think about what what was going to happen in this book. I was a nervous wreck. And then PAGE ONE happens. Like, literally as soon as I open the book, there it is. Chapter One. Pretty sure my heart dropped into my stomach. And then every time we were back in his POV after that. I did not handle it well. I hate Valg demons.

And while I've never particularly liked Chaol's character (I know I'm in the minority here), he sort of takes on a whole new persona in QoS. Maybe it's the fact of what all he's given up and how he sees the world changing that makes him into the person he's become. He's always seemed to me like a guy who is scared of change, and has an incredible ability to pick and choose which parts of people to accept. And I'm not just talking about Aelin, but also the king and Dorian. He sees only what he wants to see, and if he doesn't understand it or like it, he just shuts it out completely. He doesn't like magic. He's scared of it. He's also very scared of what will happen if people with magic have free reign again. We've known this since Crown of Midnight so I'm not sure why his continuing dislike of it surprises anyone. Chao is not going to be the same person he's been for the first three books. His life has completely change, so while his character is infuriating to me at times, he's still a vital part of this story and I don't dislike him. His character, by the end of this book, grows leaps and bounds and I was glad to see it happen.

Now for Rowan. Ah, Rowan. I still don't know how Sarah Maas did it. She gave us Dorian and Chaol in the first two books and everyone was on their respective team. Then in one book, ONE BOOK, she made me toss all my loyalties aside fall in love with Rowan's character. How anyone can not like him is beyond me. He's like the male version of Aelin, and the interaction between those two are some of the best dialogue of the book and they just work very well together. With his character showing up in Rifthold, you see him having to adjust to life without magic. And as the bond between them grows, you see different, softer sides of the Fae warrior. I love him.

We didn't get too much from Aedion in this book apart from the first few chapters as he awaits his execution. His reunion with Aelin was everything I thought it would be.. I ain't ashamed to say I may have teared up a bit. They are the only bit of family each other has left and they totally had their moment. It was perfect.

Manon's POV scares me. (Besides Abraxos, because who doesn't love Abraxos?) She is dark and wicked and infuriatingly loyal to that wretched grandmother of hers. I know she's redeemable, but for a good chunk of the book I was hoping Asterin would just overthrow her and become the new heir.. assuming that's how it works. Which it probably doesn't. BUT Manon has some feels going on that she's not even aware of and I think in this next book she will most definitely have to make a choice of which side she is on. It very well could've happened in this book, but we have no resolution where this is concerned. And that scene with Aelin.. on the edge of your seat stuff right there. I'm not sure how I feel about some illusions of her character, but I'm not completely against her playing an even bigger role in the last two books.

I'm not even going to spend time on Arobynn because I hate him. But some of the other characters, I loved. Calaena has been surrounded by a troupe of men for far too long and it's about time the women came out to play and they did not disappoint! Lysandra, wow. Love her. So much more to her character than meets the eye, and her and Aelin's relationship was refreshing. Nesryn, even though we don't get anything from her perspective is also a pretty bad chick and helping Chaol with the rebels. It's safe to say, unless you're in denial, you will know why she's there from the get go. And lastly, Elide, Lady Marion's daughter, is brought into the picture and hanging with the witches, no less. Very much excited about what role she will be playing in the future. She's got some surprises in store, I think.

For the most part, the book felt like long build-ups. Part one was a build-up and it was resolved. Part two also felt like a build-up, and it wasn't as cleanly resolved as the first. I still have some lingering questions about that. Prepare yourselves for part two. Big time game changer coming your way.

AllI can say, is that if you truly love this series, and I mean disregard the romances and all that, and are in love with the story, this book will not disappoint.

I'm going to rant just for a sec. I keep seeing some low to mid reviews on this book and they all have one thing in common Chaol Westfall. I know people shipped Calaena and Chaol really hard, but being this distraught over the downfall of their romantic relationship does a disservice to this series. And I can say that because I am completely Team Dorian and have had to put up with Chaol from day on. Not to mention Sorscha from HoF. Was not a fan of that little surprise. Never once have I given these books bad reviews simply because things weren't happening the way I wanted them to. If the romance aspect is your biggest concern, go read romance novels. The growth and maturity of the characters is wonderful, and I'm glad that Maas is not scared to kill off characters we love or sever relationships if it means progressing the story to where it needs to go. I'm completely okay with the direction Aelin and Rowan are headed because they work. Even if in my heart of hearts I had this small hope of King Dorian and Queen Aelin falling love... yada yada yada... Rowan is the dude and I'm okay with that. So if all you're going to do is get on here and rant about, "I want the old Calaena back," "Maas completely ruined Chaol's character," "These books are too long," Guess what? Go read another series! Or some watered down YA novel where everything works out just as it should in the end.

These books are gold. Sarah Maas is a genius. And you can't convince me otherwise.
Okay, truth...my daughter is 10 and in the 5th grade. Grandpa, an avid reader like myself, went out on a limb and bought the book for her last Easter. We struggle to find books that are in her 8.4-9.5 reading level, have age appropriate content with a plot she has the life experiences to connect to and comprehend, that are also challenging AND interest her...tall order. We have read all the popular series - adore Harry Potter, of course; tore through the "Greggor the Overlander" series, etc. - so even though in previewing the series I noticed it contains some very minor-vanilla...no F-bombs or S$$T level, mature-type language, and there are a couple scenes that hint at an intimate relationship in book 2 (trying not to spoil books), I gave the book a green light. We started reading it together, taking turns reading aloud, and were BOTH immediately, read 30-40 pages at a time, wake up needing to see what happens to Celena, come home from school hoping to fit in a read and "see what Celena has gotten up to now" before dance, hooked like I have never seen her before!!! And while she is an awesome reader, she is not, by any means a sit & read person, preferring to dance, sing, socialize, game, etc...yet another challenge to add to the list. The challenged are important to note because the way Maas has crafted the characters has achieved what NO OTHER series has for my daughter, and that is to draw her in to the point she NEEDS to keep reading, every single day. The characters are beautifully developed to the point where my daughter was crying when she thought her favorite character died, and was angry at who did die. Maas has painstaking developed 3-dimensional characters that are ever evolving, and that are relatable to all ages. She has also created an entirely new setting that is similar enough to other books of the same genre, like Hunger Games (she has read/watched all), yet it is entirely new & fresh. The writing is clear & thought-provoking, and she weaves in asides & flashbacks that challenge and engage readers. We have had the most incredible conversations and my daughter has made multiple connections to other texts, movies, life, and especially music/song lyrics while reading. These connections are the reason I personally & professionally recommend the series to children beginning at age 10 who are reading at a 6.5-7+ grade level, primarily due to the challenging vocabulary. The twists and turns, the co afflicts & themes, character interactions, vivid & selected detailing, and obviously careful/thoughtful word choices make this series, in my opinion, an award winning, best selling series. As a reading specialist and 18 year veteran teacher of struggling readers, I fully give not just this book, but the entire series 5 stars! I could rave on and on...but I don't want to give away a single detail and only, sincerely hope what I have shared has piqued your curiosity enough to give the series a try yourself, along with a loved one, and that through sharing our personal experiences with the books I have helped answer the question of reader age appropriateness & interest level. Buckle up...it's a wild, wonderful ride through Adarlan!

Please note I am reading the series aloud with my daughter, so as we go we just naturally, out of habit, change cuss words to "gosh" and "darn.," and the intimacy scenes were handled as follows "A., this next chapter has Choal and Celeana interacting like a married couple sometimes do in private. Shall we read or skip?" Reply, "Well, um is it very like detailed?" Me "Nah, it's pretty vague." A "Well, I know she shouldn't be doing that stuff because they are not married, but let's just read it...it's not like I'm embarrassed or going to act like that myself...ewwww!" (Love the sweetness this age!) Basically, here is my point and yes I have one... if you take the time to first, preview what you will read with your child later; second, spend the time to read aloud with your child; third, talk to your child & maintain open dialogue, all the time, about everything, just as though they are the adults-in-training they really are (not saying talk like you are buddies, peers, or equals), the content of a fictional novel is not going to become controversial or be outrageous to them, throwing them into a tizzy of misadventure and exploits! So yes, while, the series is for ages 14+, I still maintain that WITH parental supervision/accompaniment, this is an incredible series to read together!
