For readers too young to remember, the Satanic Panic was a widespread moral panic in the late ’80s and early ’90s where some people believed that Satanic cults were abusing children and influencing pop culture through things like heavy metal and Dungeons & Dragons.

It was a moral panic over Satanism. A Satanic Panic. It’s maybe the most perfect name for anything ever. It works so simply. It describes what it is. It’s slightly sing-songy. And of course, it rhymes.

Like them or hate them, there is something intriguing about rhymes. I went to a trivia night hosted by the local public library a couple of weeks ago and one group of questions all had rhyming answers. Here are a few that I remember:

I was collecting signatures for Corb Lund’s Water Not Coal petition on Tuesday when a lady blurted out at me and a couple of other people that were there to sign.

“Maybe Alberta should just join the United States!” she jeered.

Clean water and separatism aren’t the same issue at all, and one of the folks lined up turned to ask her why she would say that.

She exclaimed, “What? Do you like Mark Carney?”

“I’d take Carney over Trump!”

She shook her head and walked away, and that pretty much ended things, but it’s a snapshot of the political climate right now: a conversation about separatism is happening in Alberta. MLA Corey Hogan makes the case for Canada:

The neighbours had the rest of the tree taken out within the week.

Last Friday, feeling a bit ambitious, I decided it was time to clean the gutters on the garage where years of pine needles had collected and solidified. I got out the extension ladder and my new electric leaf blower and, knowing how packed in the needles are, I also grabbed some scrap wood from the garage to loosen them up.

I made sure to check that the ladder was secured — but I guess I must have extended the ladder at the very last minute — and then headed up hands full.

I was about two thirds of the way to the top when as I stepped, I suddenly felt the extension half of the ladder come sliding down crushing my foot under my own weight. I pulled up on the outside wrungs enough to slide my foot out only to have the ladder continue downward on my other foot. Once again I wrangled my foot out and once again the ladder came crashing down on my other shoe.

It was at this moment I acted too hastily and decided I needed to get both feet out at the same time (somehow). I feel so stupid — here I am still holding on to the leaf blower and scrap wood in my hands — what was I thinking? Surely I could have had the presence of mind to ditch it but no, I was determined to make it up the ladder.

I ended up not being able to get my foot out right away and the next thing I knew I had lot all contact with the ladder except for my stuck foot and felt myself falling backwards off the ladder. I felt that existential dread as I wondered how hard the ground was going to feel from a two meter drop straight onto my back.

As much as the fall hurt, I could tell right away that it was my foot that was most injured.

So a week later and I’m feeling mostly recovered. It’s still a bit black and blue in places but the doctor said she didn’t think it was broken and that with sprains, you can walk on them but to just take it easy and try to keep it elevated and on ice occasionally. The eaves are still not cleaned and it’s going to be quite some time before I get back on the ladder.

“Today Apple is proud to report our best March quarter ever, with revenue of $111.2 billion and double-digit growth across every geographic segment,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “iPhone achieved a March quarter revenue record, fueled by such extraordinary demand for the iPhone 17 lineup. During the quarter, Services achieved yet another all-time record, and we were excited to introduce remarkable new products to our strongest lineup ever. That included the addition of the iPhone 17e and the M4-powered iPad Air, along with the launch of MacBook Neo, which is captivating customers all around the world.”

When I think just how high their stock price has come, it sometimes makes me wonder how rich I would be if I’d never purchased a single Apple product but instead put all that money into buying shares. How much money would you need in order to feel like it would have been worth it to never have entered the Apple ecosystem? Some back of the envelope math indicates that the iPod Color I got in 2004 would now translate to about $171,000 CAD if I’d gotten stock instead. I don’t even want to start adding up my other devices.

Here are the sixcolors charts.

Tim Cook:

Today we announced that I’m taking the next step in my journey at Apple. Over the coming months I will be transitioning into a new role, leaving the CEO job behind in September and becoming Apple’s executive chairman. A new person will be stepping into what I know in my heart is the best job in the world. That leader is John Ternus, a brilliant engineer and thinker who has spent the past 25 years building the Apple products our users love so much, obsessed with every detail, focused on every possible way we can make something better, bolder, more beautiful, and more meaningful. He is the perfect person for the job.

I wondered if he just stopped updating it but today was delighted to find Federico posted a long awaited update:

Today, I’m very happy to introduce Apple Frames 4, a major update to my shortcut for framing screenshots taken on Apple devices with official Apple product bezels. Apple Frames 4 is a complete rethinking of the shortcut that is noticeably faster, updated to support all the latest Apple devices, and designed to support even more personalization options. For the first time ever, Apple Frames supports multiple colors for each device, allowing you to mix and match different colored bezels for each framed screenshot; it also supports proportional scaling when merging screenshots from different Apple devices.

But that’s not all. In addition to an updated shortcut, I’m also releasing the Apple Frames CLI, an open source command-line utility that lets developers and tinkerers automate the process of framing screenshots directly from the Mac’s Terminal. And there’s more: the Apple Frames CLI is also designed to work with AI agents, and it comes with a Claude Code/Codex skill that lets coding agents take care of framing dozens or even hundreds of screenshots in just a few seconds, from any folder on your Mac.

I find getting good screenshots to be way more clunky than it needs to be and this is going to improve my workflow tremendously.

The dream of course is to get a hoverboard that bounces under your feet as it floats above the ground but does not limit you to a track or localized area. Colin Furze comes close with simulating that hoverboard feeling while creating something that will still take you anywhere a skateboard will go.

Despite the heartbreaker this morning watching Canada take silver medals after losing to the United States 2-1 in three on three overtime, nevertheless, we have much to be grateful for. This thoughtful article about watching the olympics in Ukraine keeps things in perspective.

The tone of the Ukrainian Olympic coverage is humane. Like other national commentators, the Ukrainians pay attention to their own athletes. But they do a better job than some of explaining the sports, of dwelling on the funny moments, of keeping things in perspective. Hockey fights and little scandals get abundant and amused attention. Commentators and correspondents seem unscripted, and they laugh spontaneously. A sign language interpreter brings the the banter to a broader audience.

And so, ironically, when I watch the Ukrainians covering sports, I can think about the sports. I get to have that distraction, that pleasure, that moment.

And this, of course, is what Ukrainians are doing for many of the rest of us, on a vast scale, the scale of life itself: buying us time, buying us moments, with their pain, with their lives.

I love this so much.

After learning about “Vision 2020” from a collector — the McDonald’s initiative which, as a I note in the talk, you did watch the talk right?, would require all McDonald’s to remodel by 2020, and remove any trace of Ronald — I really began to sweat about the mural. So, I would occasionally email the franchisee, and see if there was anything I could do to preserve it.

Assuming the chance of saving the mural was slim, a high-resolution photo seemed like the next best saving bet.

And, amazingly, the franchisee agreed to let me do it!

I reached out to photographer Aaron Lee, who does wonderful work and seems always up for adventures, and asked if he could come up and do a multi-photo-stitched giant capture of the mural for permanent safekeeping.

We hit the road.

As a side note, within a couple of Cabel’s photos, I noticed that the McDonald’s had a Greg Olsen print on the wall. It turns out, that’s a painting of my friend’s friend. The pal in question, Geoff, had us over to his friend’s house where I saw the original painting hung over that same piano. It’s a very nice painting, and their house is filled with beautiful paintings, most of which (if not all) are by Utah artists.

This painting is called “Dress Rehearsal”. Unfortunately I can’t remember her first name but I remember the gist of the story. Her dad, Steve Lund, was friends with Greg Olsen, the artist, (read: he had purchased many of his paintings) and she and her sister posed at the piano where the painting would eventually end up.

I love the self referential nature of the artwork — if you look closely you can see the painting of the girls (more specifically the piano) in the top right corner of the painting. And that painting has the painting in it too.1 I believe it was my friend Geoff who took a photo of us in that room but I don’t know if I ever saw the print. I should ask him. <ins datetime="2026-03-22T15:40:48+00:00">I bumped into him and he figures the photo is probably stored away in a box somewhere.</ins>

From Apple News Room:

We are also excited to announce that our installed base now has more than 2.5 billion active devices, which is a testament to incredible customer satisfaction for the very best products and services in the world.”

I found this on the Lethbridge subreddit:

Nathan Neudorf says notwithstanding clause “the most democratic action the legislature could do”

Presumably this is an email response to questions about the democratic-ness of using Section 33, the notwithstanding clause, to rob teachers of their rights. It says:

Thank you for your email, I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

The use of the notwithstanding clause is perhaps the most democratically responsive action the legislature could do. The level of public debate, both in support and against, is almost unprecedented. People are talking to each other and to their MLAs everyday about these important issues. And unlike the courts, the MLAs who vote for or against the use of the notwithstanding clause will be held democratically accountable in the next election. People may disagree with the legislature’s decisions but they cannot say that this is contrary to democracy; if anything, this is the most democratic action the legislature could do.

The decision to use the notwithstanding clause is not one that is taken lightly. There is careful consideration that goes into making these decisions and how it will impact Albertans, including the consideration of the lives of those who will be impacted if it is not used.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feedback on this matter. As we move forward, I will take your view into consideration.

Sincerely,
Nathan Neudorf, MLA
Lethbridge-East
ALBERTA
Honourable Nathan Neudorf
Minister of Affordability and Utilities

Neudorf should know that the notwithstanding part of Section 33 means: notwithstanding that we know this goes against the Charter, we are going to do it anyway. It might be a technically legal loophole, that doesn’t make it right and it doesn’t make it “the most democratically responsive action the legislature could do.”

Not that I think we are in any immediate threat, there will be a lot of other significant moves to make one truly frightened nevertheless the 51st state rhetoric echoes in my mind as the USA kidnapped the president of Venezuela and his wife yesterday, killing dozens, or perhaps hundreds, in this special military operation which the legal implications under US and international law are not immediately clear.

There’s no denying Maduro is a bad actor and the Venezuelan people deserve better, but how this is shaking out has me worried.

I also wonder what my Canadian born US citizen cousins make of it.1 If nothing else, the lack of congressional oversight is certainly worrisome.

Though I missed this last week, Darcy Logan has some good questions for Nathan Neudorf in his editorial on the fake recall.

If this is a fake process, they have now been denied their democratic agency by duplicitous and dishonest individuals. Nathan Neudorf publicly stated that “I’m not actively involved in my own recall.” This seems like a feeble equivocation. Were you passively involved, or were you aware it was going to happen before stepping back for plausible deniability?

Nathan Neudorf needs to answer two questions: Were you aware that someone was going to launch a spurious recall? Were any of your staff involved, and if so, how?

[I]f you’re going to do shifty things, don’t brag about it to friends, because eventually someone is going to say something in passing, and there’s no way to put that toothpaste back in the tube.

Yesterday, I was emailing back and forth with another person who has also been investigating this situation, and received some very interesting information:

The rumour is (and this is just a rumour — I have no idea the reputation of the people spreading it) that she approached Ryan Tanner because she is friends with him and he doesn’t have a Facebook account. I’m looking into the rumour more asking around to try and find the person that said it.

Needless to say, we found what we were looking for.

Update: It turns out that Ryan Tanner has a Facebook account–it’s just one that is dormant/private. It has only one public facing post since it was started in 2007.

The Lethbridge Herald has published the story, Neudorf recall mystery deepens, which details the story of a mysterious man who claims he got a call from Neudorf’s office to take the paperwork to willing canvassers for the petition.1

Shortly after 8 a.m., said Apperloo, a man walked in carrying a stack of papers. The man said he was “Mike” and apologized for being late, adding that he came from the west side.

According to legislation, canvassers involved in a provincial recall campaign must have lived in the electoral division for a minimum of three months prior to volunteering.

At the time, however, Apperloo didn’t think anything of it and proceeded to fill out an application.

While she was doing that, Phillips walked into the restaurant and introduced herself to Mike. She had experience with the Forever Canadian petition and had some questions for Mike, including who Ryan Tanner was.

Phillips told the Herald that Mike claimed he didn’t know who Ryan Tanner was, or how a recall petition worked.

There are so many red flags in this story that I’m still in disbelief that we have all the details.

After Phillips left, Apperloo had a brief conversation with Mike, who admitted he was unfamiliar with the recall process.

“I said I was kind of surprised there weren’t more people here because I know people wanted to sign and then he says, ‘I don’t even really know what all of this is about.’”

Apperloo said she explained the process to him, then asked where he got the forms if he’d never met Tanner. Mike replied that he’d got them from Nathan Neudorf’s office.

“He said, ‘well, Sariah gave me a call’ and I said ‘Sariah, like Nathan Neudorf’s office manager?’ and he says, ‘yeah, she gave me a call to come bring these papers down to you.’”

Confused, Apperloo said she asked Mike why Neudorf would be in on his own recall, then had to further explain recalls to him.

A few weeks ago, my friend posted on Facebook that his wife had a meeting with Nathan Neudorf. I wrote about that meeting here.

She explained Neudorf’s position:

He told me he wasn’t personally in favour of the clause, but said that “due to the Democratic Process” he had to vote yes with his party. When I pressed him, he admitted that if he voted against, he would be removed from the UCP.

In this interview with Lethbridge News Now by David Opinko, published yesterday, Neudorf now conveniently ignores the part about needing to vote to take away teacher’s rights in order to stay in the party and instead says:

[A]lthough there might have been other avenues the government could have taken in its approach to labour negotiations, it was warranted due to the risk that students were facing.

“We had to take a fairly significant step to resolve that, to make sure that our 751,000 students got back to school and didn’t have to repeat an entire year. Sometimes, you have to take the good with the bad, and we have to work through that,” says Neudorf. “There’s more work that needs to be done to restore that relationship.”

But it’s pretty obvious which of those ways of framing it are more likely to be true. Nathan Neudorf is a smart guy who understands the severity of voting to use the notwithstanding clause. He knows it was a bad idea and that’s why he said he personally didn’t agree with it. Now he needs to own that and resign.

Nearly two weeks after a recall petition for Lethbridge East MLA Nathan Neudorf was approved by Elections Alberta, speculation is swirling about the campaign and a total lack of action by its organizer.

Many residents in the riding, along with other Albertans, are concerned about the legitimacy of the petition since many have offered their support and assistance, only to receive radio silence from Ryan Tanner, the person whose name is on the Notice of Recall Petition.

Achieving this level of media coverage for a legitimate petition might have been a tall order but thanks to Tanner it’s all over the news. Furthermore, despite protecting him from recall, I suspect the fake petition is actually catastrophic for Neudorf’s re-election prospects.

Today’s editorial by Scott Sakatch about Tanner, the invisible man, is also worth reading.

The approval of that recall petition last month surprised another group who had already submitted one to Elections Alberta, said Lethbridge-East resident Jeff Milner on Monday.

The Lethbridge Herald ran a front page story about the Nathan Neudorf recall petition on Saturday.

By Alexandra Noad:

A lot of local residents are expressing frustration over not being able to get involved in the recall campaign for Lethbridge East MLA Nathan Neudorf.

A recall petition for Neudorf, submitted by someone identifying themself as Ryan Tanner, has been approved by Elections Alberta, but there is very little information available on how to become part of it. A number of social media posts have been making the rounds on the topic on Facebook, Instagram and Reddit.

It’s doubly frustrating for Lethbridge East resident Jeff Milner, who is part of a group of concerned citizens who were trying to create their own recall campaign before Tanner’s petition was approved.

Milner says the group had appointed a chief financial officer and opened a bank account before filing their request for a recall with Elections Alberta. But Tanner beat them to the punch.

I would just add that there have been extensive rumors about a direct connection with Neudorf’s office coordinating this sham petition. I expect that part of the story to be breaking in bigger media outlets soon.

As such, one might expect him to be a truthful sort of fellow. That doesn’t appear to be the case.

Here is a copy1 of his reasons for requesting Nathan Neudorf be recalled:

An acquaintance of mine messaged him to see if he was the same Ryan Tanner behind the recall. He confirmed that he was running the petition. When she let him know that we had also been organizing to recall Neudorf and would he like help, he said he already had a campaign manager and would check with them. She followed up with an offer to meet with us on zoom, but he didn’t respond, left her message as “read”, and then blocked her.2

Very concerning and frankly appears dishonest.

I received the following email from someone3 residing in Lethbridge-East:

I sent an email to recallneudorf@gmail.com and on Friday afternoon I received an email from Ryan Tanner stating that they were in the process of getting organized and that they would be in touch shortly to let me know how I could help.

Yesterday morning (Monday, Dec 1st), I received a second email stating that there would be a meeting for the volunteers to have us sign the forms in order to get our canvasser badges and packages. We were given the name Mike as a contact for that meeting and the meeting was today (Dec 2nd) at 8am at Tim Hortons in South Lethbridge. I was there early and right at 8am Mike shows up. A few minutes later, another woman […] came and it was just the three of us. No one else! And I know there are MANY people wanting to get involved, so this was the first suspicious thing to me. [The other woman] had some concerns about the whole thing and wasn’t willing to sign the application form until she met Ryan Tanner – who never actually came to this meeting. She was upset about this and quickly left. I then asked Mike if he had met Ryan and he said no, he didn’t know who Ryan was. And Mike didn’t even understand the recall process at all, so I explained what I knew about it to him. This was also very suspicious to me as you would think that someone volunteering to get involved would have a basic understanding of things. Then I asked him why he was involved and who asked him to come give us the forms to sign seeing has he’d never met Ryan, and he mentioned that he got a call from Sariah Seaborn of Nathan Neudorf’s office to come to this meeting to hand out papers. This completely shocked me! He then mentioned that he lived on the West Side of the city and isn’t even part of our riding.

I am 100% convinced now that there is something nefarious going on here and this recall is very likely being stalled by Nathan Neudorf’s own office members!

I understand there is someone by the name of Cheryl Seaborn who works in Nathan Neudorf’s office. I’m told she has a daughter named Sariah Seaborn. It’s awfully hard not to assume it’s the same Sariah Seaborn.

Elections Alberta called me back today about my concerns reaching Ryan via email if he was just sending back form letters but not working on actually trying to get signatures for his recall petition. She was trying to be helpful but ultimately I was left with few options besides using the contact information that was on his application and hoping he will open up communications.
