I don’t know what your Grandpa looked like, but this kind of reminds me of mine. As a kid he was kind of a gentle giant, a prankster, and yes, even a cool monster when he wanted to be.

The big chin especially brings me back. Can’t you just picture this cool monster popping out its teeth and scaring the grand kids. So Grandpa!

Captain Kirkish 2010 Character Design

In the year 2010, Space Travel was possible. . . . But not very far.

Boldly going where no man has gone before was just a dream. There was no Mars. . . . no Jupiter moons. . . . . no the wannabe planet Pluto.. . . .

Who thought we’d have flying cars by now? Raise your hand. . . . . I know I did.

(Shakes a clenched hand up at an imaginary comic book thought bubble. This jittery phantom of a thought balloon lingered like an electric smoke cloud above my head, with a bit of static like an old lit television, bleed through from an ancient dead channel in a parallel Universe. It was the opening credits of the Jetson’s. . . . .

Starts singing the theme song like a kid again, “Jetson’s meet the Jetson’s” . . . . Coughs…… clears throat . . . . “ pauses….. Quickly looks around to see if anyone is watching while imaginary bubble disappears like a phantom.)

Anyways….. What’s really important is I have a new post to show you today. Something retro. Something new. Something 2010.

It’s my take on a Captain Kirk-like character design. Not exactly Kirk, but I think it has the feeling of that type of character.

Let me know what you think and Tell me how you imagined 2010 as a kid? How did you see your heroes? Any heroes that maybe you came up with when you were kid? Any sketches you wanna share????

Sketch-Lapse: Buddha Journey

In Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha, Siddartha comes to realize there is no such thing as time. Upon the realization it is said, “Nothing was, nothing will be, everything has reality and presence.”

Today, we have a little something different in the form of an experiment not only in pencil, but in time as well. With the help of my friend Richard Gluck and his awesome Canon 5-D, I was able to document the process of today’s sketch. I asked Richard if he could time-lapse my sketching. I knew he could, but he suggested that we animate the sketch instead, taking shots of the drawing little by little. The effect was to remove my hand and pencil so it wouldn’t cover up the drawing. It could use a little more contrast, but this is my first attempt and it would have been a little longer too if my drawing hand had not knocked the camera out of place. It’s a Buddha Journey.

There is truth and wisdom to Siddartha’s concept of time, but today it does occur to me that if there is no time, there is no sketch-lapse. Reality though… Maybe?… Presence, surely. I hope it gives you something to wrap your mind around.

Angel of Death

This is another spacecraft hybridization of the mechanic and the organic and what I call a mechanical organical. The triangular cluster of dots to the left of the craft echoes my own encounter with a genuine UFO. Those three dots used to appear in a lot of my drawings, sort of a signature of mine. I’ll tell you the whole story another time.

The piece was also inspired in part by one of my favorite anime series: Neon Genesis Evangelion. Some of those Angels look almost like spaceships.

I was pretty blatant in establishing the mechanic-organic duality. I tried to use organic shapes on the left of the ship and more mechanic one’s on the right. There are even branches, veins and even leaf-like structures growing out of the left side and trailing arm tentacles like a jelly fish’s ready to stun anything foolish enough to drift in its wake.

One of my process drawings gave off more of a Death Angel Baby than a fully matured Angel of Death.

I continued to experiment and so developed its darker and more sinister Papa.

You might remember the old Passover story about the Angel of Death “passing over” the first born children of the Israelites thanks to the blood of a lamb painted across their doors. I’ll tell you one thing, this one ain’t passing over no one. An indiscriminate executioner!

Happy Passover everybody or Happy Pesach and I hope everybody has a Good Friday and good Easter this weekend.

Well….This little sketch is actually a smaller part of a larger sketch that I have been working on. Hopefully the rest turns out ok. I thought this part looked cool so I scanned it in to show you. I picture this guy much like the character Dr. Parnassus in Dr. Parnassus’s Imaginarium (Go see it!). This guru, floating on this little mysterious piece of earth sits quietly contemplating the meaning of the universe. Hope you like it.

Also if you haven’t heard a little bit of news, Guru the legendary rapper of Gang Starr suffered a heart attack and fell into a comma a few weeks ago. Apparently, he is now in a stable condition. He is being pretty quiet about what happened. He is quoted as saying, “That’s something I don’t want to talk about. I don’t want to talk about the past. The past is the past,” Guru said, according to the press release. “It is what it is. It was great, but that was then and this is now.” A statement and a piece of advice….Very guru of him.
