Perhaps we’ve forgotten to put the attachment on, or missed out the subject, sent it to the wrong email address, or not quite finished typing – but there it goes into the big yonder and there is nothing we can do about it – or is there?

Using one of the Google Labs add-ins to Google Mail (or gMail), called “Undo Send”, we can get a slight reprieve. First off, read the warning that accompanies anything in Labs, “Mail Labs is a testing ground for experimental features that aren’t quite ready for prime time. They may change, break or disappear at any time.”

If, after reading the warning, you are happy to proceed then enable Undo Send by heading into Google Mail, then Settings, and Labs, and scroll down to “Undo Send” and click “Enable” then Save Changes.

Now, next time you fire off that accidental message you can click the Undo button. Phew!

Last time we looked at the physical aspects of the tiny Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini &#8211; you can catch up in A Closer Look At The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Part One – and this time we’ll take a look at some of the functions of the phone. As we discovered in the <a class="readmore" href="http://www.jasonslater.co.uk/2010/08/31/a-closer-look-at-the-sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-part-two/">[read more...]</a>

As we discovered in the previous article this phone runs Android version 1.6 so it benefits from some of the advantages of the Android operating system – most notably of which is access to the Android Market Store for adding applications.

As the screen is small, each main screen panel can hold just one Widget application, some may find it a problem, but I found it quite useful – it feels broadly similar to the excellent webOS in this particular aspect.

The hot touch areas in each corner of the phone are also useful as they can be customised by holding the icon, on the icon tray, you want for a few seconds then dragging it into the appropriate corner. It’s worth mentioning the touch screen here as it’s a capacitive touch screen so you really feel the responsiveness when sliding things around with your finger.

In the image you can see the X10 mini in the middle, with a Nokia N95 8GB on the left and the Motorola Milestone on the right – this should give you some idea of the size of the phone.

Standard applications included on the phone are Browser (but bear in mind the size of the screen if web surfing is important to you!), Camera, Album, E-mail, Settings, Market, Alarm, Calendar, User Guide, Notes, FM Radio, Timescape, Facebook, PlayNow, Video, YouTube. Maps, Gmail, Google Talk, Calculator, Timer, Stopwatch, Sync, Geotags, TrackID, NeoReader, User Support, RoadSync, Voice Search, and Wisepilot. With the addition of the Android Marketplace you can extend the applications with all sorts of productivity tools, games, utilities, and social networking tools.

Timescape is an application Sony Ericsson have put a lot of work into, it brings together the various communication methods and services such as text messages, call information, email, tweets, and Facebook messages into one place so you can more easily keep track of what’s going on and when.

Music playing is easy and the sound through the speakers is reasonable given the size of the phone (though you’ll probably be wearing the headphones most of the time – especially if you want to take advantage of the FM Radio).

Taking photos is a doddle, just select your flash options, and and image options and off you go. Likewise, video is just as simple – check out the video clip below. Once you have completed your video clip (.3GP) you can email it to someone, or uploaded it straight onto YouTube – if you have a suitable connection.

You have to hand it to Sony Ericsson – when they said it was small they were not kidding around &#8211; the Xperia X10 mini is very small. When sat next to my Palm Pre and Motorola Milestone the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini looks tiny – and it runs Android (version 1.6 is loaded). <a class="readmore" href="http://www.jasonslater.co.uk/2010/08/27/a-closer-look-at-the-sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-mini-part-one/">[read more...]</a>

You have to hand it to Sony Ericsson – when they said it was small they were not kidding around – the Xperia X10 mini is very small.

When sat next to my Palm Pre and Motorola Milestone the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini looks tiny – and it runs Android (version 1.6 is loaded).

It has the feel of a slider phone but it isn’t – it’s just small.

Take a look at the physical specifications – firstly the dimensions – there are 83mm x 50mm x 16mm (H x W x D), and the weight is just 88g.

The screen is 320×240 QVGA, with a physical 2.55 inch display, and due to the size of the phone the interface has been customised so that a widget sits in the center of each screen and the corners are hot linked to special functions, such as phone calling, contacts, music, and messaging. Inside the phone beats a heart of a 600 Mhz Qualcomm processor which makes the device feel quite speedy.

On the top of the device we have the power and lock button, the side we have ringer volume up, down and a camera buttons.

The bottom has the USB slot(with a cover) and a standard jack for a headset connection.

Sitting behind the back cover is a a space for a MicroSD card (the phone itself has 128MB memory) which can support up to 16 GB; the card in the phone I am looking at is 2GB.

It’s worth mentioning that a bunch of alternate colour back cases were included in the box ranging from silver to pink and green.

Features you would expect from a phone of this nature are all present, so you get Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Radio, YouTube, aGPS, Twitter and Facebook facilities, Geo-tagging, Web Browsing, Google Maps, Wisepilot, and a Music Player.

The front of the X10 mini has three buttons (Menu, Home and Back) at the base whilst at the top of the device is a notification LED, the ear speaker, proximity sensor and light sensor.

The phone also has a built in 5 megapixel camera with a light for taking pictures in a range of lighting conditions.

In use the X10 is surprisingly easy to use – even with my big fingers – it also feels pretty quick and responsive. Typing on the onscreen keyboard takes some getting your head round – not the interface but instead the T9 system so if you put in a ‘J’ and then an ‘a’ for Jason, it flips it to read ‘La’ and then back again as you carry on typing – I never did really get the T9 system.

Battery life has been very good, I have had the phone just over a week and it is still on its initial charge and during that time we have downloaded applications from the App Store, played games, used many of the features and it’s still going (7 days 6 hours so far).

I just read that the Xperia X10 mini handset has been awarded “European Mobile Phone 2010-2011” by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA).

If you need a small phone that is big on features I have yet to see anything that comes close to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini.

For some, quite surprising, reason an effective internet security solution (including anti-virus, and anti-spyware) isn’t shipped with Windows 7 and we are pretty much left to our own devices to figure things out. There are several problems introduced by the lack of bundled protection, the most important, and most worrying, is that we may forget to install a safety product altogether.

However, assuming we have remembered, and with so many solutions out there, which one do we choose?

Recently, I have been looking at BullGuard Internet Security, currently up to version 9, which is an internet security suite that brings together a range of safety features all under one simple interface. Some of the key features of the latest version of BullGuard Internet Security include:

Antivirus protection

Spyware removal tool

Spam Filter

Backup and Recovery features

5 GB Online backup

24/7 Support with Live Chat Support

A special “Gaming” mode which aims to reduce processor usage, whilst minimising the impact on system resources, when playing demanding games.

Protection for instant messaging

In this article we’ll be taking a closer look at BullGuard and the protection it offers.

The BullGuard product is compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and Windows XP (at least SP2 required for XP) and installation of the product is pretty straight forward: Simply download it, install it, then reboot your computer (make sure you have saved your work first!), and create a BullGuard account in the friendly wizard that appears. You can also opt in to the regular newsletter to keep up to date with development in the security product.

Once installed BullGuard sits, like a faithful companion, in your taskbar whilst keeping an eye out for any signs of trouble. Right-clicking the taskbar icon presents a context menu offering quick access to a number of features including manual virus scans.

Most of the time BullGuard sits there quietly but when things start to happen on your computer BullGuard kicks in and helps you through the process – keeping all the fussy stuff out of the way (though it’s there if you want it).

As with all security products there is an initial period of “training” where you need to decide whether to allow certain traffic to pass through your network.

The one thing I particularly like about BullGuard is that a number of the common security alerts are automatically dealt with for you. This really helps because some of the services that are built into Windows 7 need access to the Internet, so having BullGuard automatically handle them offers some peace of mind that you won’t accidentally lock your computer down from the Internet whilst allowing you get up and running quickly.

The main BullGuard dashboard is quite effective with its minimalistic approach – offering short summaries and access to the key functions of the product.

If you are not too technically minded you will like the Bullguard minimalistic interface – it has all the functionality you need, and works to keep you safe in the background, but only shows what you really need to know on the front end.

As an example, the first panel tells you the details of the most recent virus scan and allows you to kick off a manual scan. A manual scan includes checking the system files, the registry, and other files on your computer. When selected, a percentage bar tells you the progress of the scan, and an “Infections” section keeps you warned of any infected or suspicious files that need dealing with.

Another interesting section is the Allow/block programs icon which has a number of tabs including Subnets, Firewall rules, Security, Logging, and Alerts. Under Alerts you can specify the default action of online traffic alerts – so when a message pops up telling you something is happening you can opt to play a sound file, specify an automatic answer, and notify you when any program gets automatically granted access to the internet.

A good initial test of any anti-virus solution is to try the test files at http://www.eicar.org – and BullGuard detected them almost instantly.

The dashboard also offers access to the support team. There are two key options, the first allow you to send an email for non emergency questions whilst the second option allows you to start a live chat session for those times when everything has gone pear shaped.

BullGuard already holds a number of positive recommendations, including Which? Magazine, PC Pro (where it received a Recommended rating), and Computer Buyer and there is also a 60 day free trial of BullGuard Internet Security, during which time you can check out it’s features, so it’s a good time to check out the options for free internet security.

To learn more, and download the trial, visit the BullGuard website.

If you get the following error, or similar, "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted” referring to the file “class-simple.php” when working within the admin section of the platform, particularly when trying to add a new widget, it could be that you need to increase the memory limit. It’s worth noting that this is not particularly a WordPress problem, more a balancing act issue of the system platform behind it.

However, you may be able to get round the problem if you are comfortable editing your wp-config.php file then you can increase the memory limit by adding the following line (remember to backup your original file in case things go wrong):

define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '64M');

Hopefully, that should get you going again.

There was a time when it made sense to have a separate printer, scanner, and copier but with the fall in prices of all-in-one devices, coupled with the advantages of Wi-Fi technology, it is worth looking at again, particularly when thinking about green technology – as an all-in-one device can often be more energy efficient than running distinct devices.

All-in-one devices are available from all the big name manufacturers, such as HP (we previously looked at the HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-In-One), Epson, Lexmark, OKI, Samsung, Brother and Canon. One machine that worth taking a look at is the Canon Pixma MP640, a reasonably priced all-in-one device which offers print, copy, and scan facilities but also offers Wi-Fi (and a wired network port), optional Bluetooth (using a BU-30 wireless unit), and printing direct from a memory card. The features are all helped along by the 7.5 cm display screen which means you often don’t even need a computer to use the device.

The Pixma 640 was a PC Pro recommended purchase and The Gadget Show, on Five television, awarded it a 4 G-Rating, and it’s easy to see why. Even better, the Canon Pixma MP640 can be picked up for a great price at the moment so be sure to check out the options before you buy.

Creating a System Repair Disc is one of those things that’s easy to do and yet often overlooked at the outset, when time is short, then forgotten about – until you run into problems – so don’t get caught out.

To create your repair disc, head into the Start Menu, All Programs, Maintenance, Create a System Repair Disc, and follow the instructions in the helpful wizard. Also, be sure to have a couple of writable DVD or CD discs available.

If something goes wrong with your computer then a system repair disc may be the only way to get your system working again – so it’s well worth checking.

I wonder how many people, like me, have a manuscript, for a potential novel, languishing in a drawer somewhere?

Writing a novel is one of those things, like blogging, that sounds easy to do – but it isn’t. The problem, I think, is that it is one of those things that is easy to start – but to keep up the momentum requires a huge amount of drive, enthusiasm, and dedication – so hats off to anyone who has finished their novel.

One of the big problems with producing a novel, at least from my experience, is falling into the trap of editing whilst you write – I can’t even remember how many times I have edited or rewritten those first few chapters, and this cycle goes on and on and the novel never gets finished.

Once a draft of the manuscript is ready, however, the really difficult job starts of finding an agent, editor, publisher, and readers – and there is really no way to fast track – or is there?

UK based web start-up, CompletelyNovel, is utilising the power of crowd-sourcing to bring together all the stages of the writing cycle into a busy online community. Whether you want to self publish, or just read novels, there is something for you at the site.

For the avid reader there are currently over 5,000 books online ranging from Thrillers to Biographical and works including classic titles, new released, and books from new writers. When adding a book for reading your can tag it as one of your favourite books, indicate that you own this book, whether you have read it yet, and even add your own review.

For the writer in your it’s worth noting that the author retains all rights to uploaded work, and that books can be read online, or printed on demand. There are also facilities to sell through online retailers such as Amazon.

Some of the advantages that crowd sourcing brings to your novel experience:

Connect with like-minded readers and writers

Gain motivation through reaching out to the community

Get feedback on your work

Review and rate books

Possibly catch the eye of the potential agents and publishers

A new feature which recently appeared on the site include “Journeys”, involving a reader journey (to help get the best out of your reading experience), a writer journey (steps to help you publish and promote your novel), and the book journey (to help promote published books).

Fonts can be implemented onto your website by making calls to the API (Application Programming Interface) – this is done simply by including a relationship link in the html header which points to the appropriate Google font – you then add a short style section to your CSS before matching this to your html. Best of all, the rendered typeface appears at text – not as an image.
