It reminds me of a time I interviewed Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett back in 2000 when I was a financial journalist. 

Tech stocks were super popular back then, too. So of course he got a lot of questions about them from the media. His basic response can be summed up in just a few words: price paid, value received. 

And what he meant was it doesn’t matter what the stock is. It could be safe. It could be risky. But if you pay the right price for it, you can wring true value out of it. 

In other words… you can make a lot of money!

And Buffett’s words come to mind these days when I look at this year’s investing craze: stay-at-home stocks. 

Why Stay-at-Home Stocks Are Falling

I’ve seen it time and time again. A group of stocks gets super hot. We all make a ton of money and… poof. The sector goes cold as a stone. And that’s what’s been happening the past month and that’s why stay-at-home stocks are falling. 

Pick any of the stay-at-home stocks like Zoom Video Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: ZM), Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN), Peloton Interactive Inc. (Nasdaq: PTON) and many others. Chances are their shares are lower than they were three or four weeks ago, despite the rest of the stock market’s march upward. 

And that leaves you to wonder… “I bought these great stocks. They’re the best of the best in their industries. So after watching the broader market go straight up for days at a time, why are my stay-at-home stocks falling instead of helping push markets even higher?”

It’s a classic trap… 

It’s the same way value investors get stuck in value traps — stocks that appear to be good buys but aren’t. And the book-end to that is what I call a “growth trap.”

A growth trap happens with companies that have soaring revenue and profits that will likely beat Wall Street estimates by a wide margin. But the stock isn’t going up anymore… So why is that?

The problem is all of the growth you’re seeing and projecting in the near-term is already priced into the shares. Peloton is a great example of this…

The point is that you can’t wait until the headlines say “Buy” because now we have two potential COVID-19 vaccines that are almost ready to go. You have to buy in anticipation of those headlines coming down the pike. 

That’s why patience equals profit in the stock market. Luckily, there are still plenty of stocks out there that are only just starting to move… and they have the potential to go much higher.

Sticking with that theme, today I want to revisit a stock I first talked about a couple of months ago. This stock is an energy and “internet of things” play I first told you about in a video on Aug. 31. Back then, I predicted it could double by New Year’s. 

You can still buy it for a few percentage points less than when I recommended it and… yes, I still think this stock can double by the beginning of 2021.

The goal with air taxi passenger drones is to provide “urban air mobility,” giving people the chance to quickly move around a crowded metro area. Roads and public means of getting around are getting more and more congested. And those modes are becoming more and more expensive to expand. 

This company has been holding demo flights with these electric drones. There are videos on YouTube and you can watch as people step in, close the hatch and power up the flight controls. The guidance system then takes care of the rest — no pilot needed.

This model carries two people and up to 485 pounds of total weight, flying at a top speed of 80 miles per hour a max range of 22 miles. The cockpit capsule is 6 feet long and the drone has a wingspan of 18 feet. 

The company has run more than 2,000 test flights in a range of weather conditions. It even held a test here in the U.S. in North Carolina with the state’s governor in attendance. 

The company hopes to have fleets of these passenger drones in coming years. Its aim is to create a market for passenger drone tourism, which could make this passenger drone stock a hot commodity. 

Imagine hopping in for a ride at your hotel at a major resort or tourism area, much as you might have done before the pandemic in a helicopter — at much greater cost. The company also develops autonomous drones for other uses (think Amazon deliveries and such). 

And it’s already reporting sales, including revenue of $21 million in the first half of 2020. That number is on track to hit $60 million by the end of the year.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) announced Monday positive early results from its Phase 3 coronavirus vaccine trials, showing 90% effectiveness.

I’ve said many times that pending vaccine news and Phase 3 updates from the likes of Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE), Moderna Inc. (Nasdaq: MRNA) and AstraZenica (Nasdaq: AZN) would radically change the stock market from pessimism to euphoria. 

With Pfizer and BioNTech announcing positive results Monday morning, that’s exactly what happened. And I expect more of the same when other major players on the vaccine front make similar announcements.

But first things first. 

Postelection Rally Sends Stocks Soaring

Things were relatively flat Friday. But Monday through Thursday, postelection rally stocks soared. We saw gains of 7.5% in the S&P 500, 6% in the Dow, and 9% gains in both the Nasdaq and Russell 2000. 

And a lot of what happened this week was to be expected. I posted a video last week noting the put-call ratio showed people quickly switched from bullish to bearish. And whenever people change their opinions that sharply, it’s almost a certainty that the market will move in the opposite direction…

And boy did it.

At this point, you should keep your eye on the Russell 2000. It has been the weakest of these four indexes over the past few years. 

BUT, it just hit its highest point since before the pandemic. IF it can keep working its way higher in this postelection rally, it will be on track to challenge its all-time highs, set almost 2 ½ years ago. 

These sharp moves up bring us back to the psychology of investing and what we call FOMO — fear of missing out. It can be depressing if by chance you weren’t fully invested, or if you owned stocks that didn’t ride the wave up. 

So you might be thinking, “I just missed a rally for the ages. Now what do I do?”

The first step is to readjust your attitude. Take a deep breath, and take a step back. Do NOT go in guns blazing on Monday and buying with both fists to play “catch up.” 

I know that feeling myself, and my advice is to fight that urge. Whether you’re a trader buying options or a buy-and-hold investor, you have to play the long game to survive on Wall Street. That means picking your battles and being strategic — not reckless.

First, a broader point I want to make here is that while this election is still up in the air, this renewable energy stock and others like it will do well under each administration. 

You must fight the impulse to think whatever you buy should be all about Joe Biden winning or all about Donald Trump remaining in the White House. 

If you’re buying options, that’s one thing. But when it comes to going long on stocks, you have to take a step back and give them room to move. They don’t generally explode higher right after I post one of these videos or right after you buy them. 

Sometimes it takes weeks or months before suddenly, BOOM! They move higher and keep going.

And I think that’s what we’re looking at with this renewable energy stock. I don’t think this is a stock that will explode upward in a week or a month. Rather, it’s a stock I think will continue to gain ground from here based on what I see on this chart.

Similarly, being right means believing the stock market must go down — or boom higher — because of recent economic data. Or because of what we see happening in our communities, states, regions and in the national economic picture. 

I can’t tell you how many times in my investing career people have told me the stock market is a goner. A bear market is right around the corner. There’s a bubble and it’s going to pop in the next 24 hours, week, month or quarter. 

I don’t know how many times I’ve thought that myself… only to be proven wrong as many times — if not more — than I’ve been proven right. 

That’s why when people ask me which candidate I prefer, President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden, I have my own opinions. But as an investor I say ultimately… 

It doesn’t matter.

In a video I posted Thursday, I pointed to what I call the stock market’s “most important chart.” It breaks down the Chicago Board Options Exchange’s put-call ratio. 

It simply measures bullishness and bearishness of options traders based on whether they’re buying calls or puts. A “call” is a bet a stock is going to go up by a certain date. A “put” is a bet a stock will go down. 

When I posted my last video, there was extreme bullishness the likes of which we’d rarely seen in the market over the past 13 years. 

Within days of recording that video, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 900 points… the Nasdaq dropped 500 points. Those dips came at the end of a slow-motion sell-off that saw both indexes, the S&P 500 and the Russell 2000 all fall between 7%-8% since the start of October. 

If you go back to the markets’ all-time highs set in early September, we’re now in the midst of a 10% correction.

Here’s the chart from Tuesday. Note the peak bullishness:

And here we are just a few days later. Note the sharp trend reversal toward peak bearishness since Tuesday:

Why This Reversal Could Point to a New Stock Market Rally

The above charts illustrate just how fast the sentiment among options traders has changed from peak bullish to peak bearish… in a matter of days. 

In fact, at one point during the week’s sell-offs, the put-call ratio rocketed toward the “1.10” level, which means options speculators hastily shifted to buying more puts than calls… They expect even sharper sell-offs to come.

In effect, the dips we saw this week — and the ones we’re likely to see during election week — are helping clear the decks. They’re erasing the extreme optimism and introducing doubt and fear. That doubt and fear will in turn set the stage for a new stock market rally.

Before we get to it, I will say it has both nothing and everything to do with the upcoming election, the coronavirus pandemic and the current state of the economy… And it has me deeply concerned. 

The stock market of course throws out a lot of false positives and signals we think in the moment are important. Much of the time, you can ignore the signal and do just as well or better. 

But when you get caught up in an inevitable correction or even a bear market that sneaks up on you, you’ve likely wondered why you couldn’t get advance warning.

The chart below shows the current put-call ratio. Many of you are at least familiar with options. If not, a put is an options bet that a stock or index will fall by a certain date. A call is a bet that it will go up. 

As traders become more bullish or bearish, they buy calls or puts, respectively. Take a look at the red circle on the far right of the chart. 

That red circle is where stock market sentiment is right now. As you can see, there have been only a handful of times over the past 13 years that traders have been as bullish as they are today. 

In just over six months, we’ve gone from a period of historic bearishness as the coronavirus pandemic set in back in February… to historic bullishness where optimism reigns. Investors are feeling bulletproof, and that is a dangerous sign — though not foolproof.
