On October 15th, Jess and Shannon of James + Dunne Styling hosted an evening of style featuring essential looks for fall – modeled on fabulous women in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s – proving that high fashion and age-appropriate looks do coexist from head to toe. Live styling, creative layering and style tricks ensued before Frank Potter of Bangz and Phoebe Herron of Natural Elegance took the floor and shared the latest beauty secrets for fall. Shannon, Sara, Knox, Jess

In May, Jess and Shannon received a call from Knox Pearson, looking to orchestrate a birthday surprise for her daughter. More specifically, a style surprise involving a day of beauty and a shopping spree. Not an easy feat when your daughter is an independent business owner and working mom who “is used to being in control.” Knox’s daughter, Sara Copenhaver, co-owner of one of Wilmington’s most delicious restaurants – Marc’s on Market. Ever since Sara’s husband Marc won Wilmington Magazine’s “Top Chef” award in 2008, Sara hasn’t had much time to sleep, eat or spend as much time as she’d like with her son Cole – let alone worry about her wardrobe!

She did, however hint to her Mom that she would not mind being a guest on TLC’s “What Not to Wear.” We may not be Stacy and Clinton, but Knox was confident we were sure to be Wilmington’s next best thing.

Together with Marc, they decided to host a well-deserved pampering intervention to celebrate Sara’s 40th birthday. They booked a Day of Beauty at Seagrass Salon and enlisted James + Dunne to whisk Sara away for an afternoon of shopping.

Since Sara was in the dark on her surprise, Jess and Shannon met with Knox for Sara’s style consultation to get some insight on Sara’s lifestyle, personal style choices and style challenges. Knox’s main objective was for Sara to walk away from the experience with several new wardrobe pieces that fit her lifestyle yet “something she feels pretty and comfortable in.”

With a shopping budget of $600 and a few hours to spare before Sara’s “Style Reveal” party, we headed to Mayfaire Town Center to update Sara’s “comfy chic” wardrobe. Starting first at J.Crew, we found an empire-waist Grecian style maxi dress and a stretch denim pencil skirt before moving on to Banana Republic, where Sara had found success in sizing in the past.

At BR, we introduced a new color – raspberry – into Sara’s wardrobe that she enthusiastically embraced by selecting a comfy v-neck tie and linen shift dress with intricate embellishment. We paired these pieces with a few color combos she hadn’t tried – with a navy flouncy skirt and slate gray weaved wedge sandals. We finished off our shopping spree with a series of mix-and-match looks incorporating a printed scarf, jersey tops and shrugs in a variety of colors and a few “wild card” items – a modern, geometric silver long necklace and a stylish cinch belt.

Before heading to Knox’s house for her “Style Reveal,” Sara changed into one of her favorite new outfits before leaving the store, which she claimed she had not done since she was at least eighteen. Twenty-two years later, it felt just as good.

Shortly after Sara’s birthday celebration, Jess and Shannon received a note from Knox: “Sara had a wonderful time with you both. She was simply radiant with happiness. As I said, everyone has beautiful assets but often times see only the negative. For Sara, that’s where you came in – to help her rediscover the positive.”

Although there was little time to spare, Mary’s easy going manner calmed our nerves as we walked through our Style Consultation and came away with the necessary criteria – full length, not too shiny, an emphasis on her upper body and shoes she can dance in.  With Mary’s sun-kissed skin, we immediately envisioned her in a citrine dress. We always try to shop local first. Since Mary said she had alredy perused the racks at Personal Touch, we sorted through the racks at Beanie + Cecil, Monkee’s, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. We found very few full-length gowns and no citrine. We then put in calls to Raleigh boutiques Vermillion and high-end consignment shop Revolver as well as several boutiques in Charleston, to send us photos of any dresses that met our criteria. Getting closer, but still not the one.

After spending close to two hours on www.shopstyle.com, Jess found several candidates she shared with Shannon before they narrowed it down to two finalists – an orange/pink Marc Bouwer Glamit! Floral Dress and a peony lurex georgette gown in CITRINE(!) by Nicole Miller.

Of course, the Marc Bouwer gown only existed online in a size 2 with Bergdorf’s, Neiman Marcus and Saks. That’s when the campaign began. After calling a dozen stores throughout the country that carry the Glamit! line with no luck, we struck gold with the Dallas-based Neiman Marcus.

We expected both dresses to arrive on Tuesday (the week of the event) so we pulled some dazzlers from Cape Fear Jewelry – including a coral accented cameo, a  turquoise and diamond cocktail ring from the 1940′s and Mary’s favorite: a multi-hued chain bracelet. We also pulled a variety of metallic heels from Monkee’s for good measure.

The Neiman Marcus dress was beautiful, but Mary thought it felt a little too reminiscent of a caftan so we held our breath and waited for the Nicole Miller to arrive. When it finally made it’s appearance – only two days before the event – Mary declared that she had fallen in love.

We booked her an appointment with one of our very favorite makeup artists, Phoebe Herron. We had spoken to celebrity stylist  Steven Ward about styling Mary’s hair for the night but he was booked solid in the afternoon styling the gala’s hosts and hostesses as Broadway showgirls and Hollywood legends. Mary’s daughter, who is currently getting her cosmetology degree in Raleigh, stepped in to create the total look for her mom’s memorable night weighing in as she saw Mary’s dress for the first time, “It’s the most beautiful dress I’ve ever seen.”

Mary echoed her daughter’s sentiments that evening as she did a twirl on the red carpet – “I’ve never felt more beautiful.”
