Jaguar today announced the introduction of the 2010 Jaguar XF Supercharged, the fourth and newest member of its acclaimed XF lineup. The vehicle, a mid-year release, is powered by a 470 hp version of the 5.0-liter supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III engine that debuted at this year's Detroit Auto Show. The XF Supercharged will go on sale in October 2009, and will be priced starting at $68,000 MSRP.

Next-Generation Jaguar XJ Sedan Teased in Shanghai, Set to Debut in July

At this week's 2009 Shanghai motor show, Jaguar's managing director Mike O'Driscoll announced that the automaker's highly-anticipated next-generation XJ sedan will debut this July 9 in London.

When it arrives at most dealerships later this year, Jag's biggest cat will employ the brand's Gen III gas and diesel engines that are most notably found in the current XF sedan. According to Jaguar officials, the 236-hp 3.0L V-6 diesel and 510-hp supercharged 5.0L V-8 will be available, among others. Don't expect the oil-burning powertrain for the U.S. anytime soon. There's even talk of a hybrid version of the car speculated to come later in the model's production cycle.

Underpinning the car is a fully aluminum aerospace-inspired platform that's said to be lighter, stronger and more helpful for fuel efficiency ratings than previous generations. Both long and standard wheelbase versions of the car will be available in global markets.

From the provided teaser image, we can tell much work went into creating a more modern Jaguar sedan. Its lines are expected to borrow from the current XF and as you can see, it sports LED rear taillights and a very athletic hood. The sedan will tout all of the usual luxuries found in British marque's offerings, and for the first time on the model, it will feature a panoramic roof.

New engines sharpen latest Jaguar's fangs

Nice Jaguars. That was what I'd titled this article in reference to the French coastal town where the international launch of the 2009 Jaguar XF and XK was held. The accidental double meaning was apt, even if I usually dislike using the word "nice".

A less lazy writer might haul out adjectives such as rumbustious and debonair to describe these new Jaguars, even though their fangs and claws have been sharpened.

The bigger bite comes from four new engines variously available in the XF sedan range and the two-door XK coupé and convertible. The 4.2-litre petrol V8 has been replaced by a direct-injection five-litre in both normally-aspirated and supercharged form while the 2The bigger bite comes from four new engines.7-litre turbodiesel has been upped to a three-litre twin-turbo unit available in two power outputs.

The figures make for impressive reading: the five-litre punches out 283kW and 515Nm of torque; the supercharged "R" 375kW and 625Nm, and both V8's are available in the XF and XK ranges.

The three-litre V6 twin turbodiesel, available only in the XF sedan, is made in two versions: a more emissions-friendly 177kW/500Nm derivative and a large-fanged 202kW/600Nm unit powers the "S" model.

Along with major performance improvements, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of all the new engines are either the same or lower than their predecessors. The handling's been uprated too in the flagship supercharged models - wearing the "R" badge for the first time - by means of upgraded computer-controlled active suspension and differentialThe three-litre V6 twin turbodiesel is made in two versions.

Serpentine roads in the hills above Nice were the perfect playground in which to indulge in the new-found power and agility of these Jaguars.

No supercharged versions were available but I drove both the five-litre and the 600Nm diesel version of the XF sedan. Both cars possess effortless acceleration and overtaking brawn but differ markedly in character.

The petrol V8 is the more indulgent, charismatic car for the dedicated petrolhead, and much of it has to do with the sound. With that smoothly growling V8 echoing deliciously off the rock walls of the narrow mountain passes and the six-speed auto artfully blipping the throttle on downshifts - "whruum, whruum" - you can almost imagine you're competing in the Monte Carlo Rally that takes place on these roads.

It races from rest to 100km/h in 5.7sec at sea level with a governed 250km/h top speed.

RELAXED MUSCLE

F1-style shift paddles on the steering give extra control but I seldom used them because the auto mode seemed to read my thoughts and was almost always on cue with its butter-smooth shifts.

The diesel is all about relaxed muscle, like a body-builder effortlessly bench-pressing a bar-bending load without breaking a sweat. It's an ultra-refined oil-burner with a purr in place of the V8's angrier acoustics.

The use of two parallel-sequential turbochargers maximises muscle at both low and high rpm. Jabbing the throttle at any revs elicited a rush of linear, lag-free momentum that made child's play of overtaking the long trucks that shared our mountain passes while allowing 0-100km/h in 6.4sec.

I hope this power delivery will be just as lag-free at Gauteng's power-strangling altitude.

The XF has modes to match your mild or wild mood. Press a button marked with a chequered flag and the throttle and gearshift responses are quickened. Or you can switch off the traction control altogether and apply rubberised artwork to the road.

SPECIAL MENTION

Given the unforgivingly hard rock lining these narrow roads I elected to leave the electronic nannies on. And a fine job they did - adrenalin with a safety net.

The new engines are the headline acts but the XF's suspension deserves special mention because it allows the power to be exploited so confidently. Dips and camber changes in the twisty roads failed to throw this lithe sedan off its line, even when the blinking traction-control light signalled it was being driven on its limits.

The XF strikes an impressive balance between ride quality and handling sharpness. All kudos to the engineers.

Then I drove a five-litre XK convertible - a more livid, visceral experience with sharper handling and suspension wound a little tighter. Despite its not-inconsiderable mass and size it's a grand tourer of inspiring finesse and agility with a rigid-feeling body that doesn't betray the absence of a solid roof.

The appeal of the XK is that it's cheaper than an Aston Martin - in price if not in execution or appeal.

DUE HERE IN JUNE

There was a time when Jaguars were high on olde worlde charm but lagged dynamically behind their German rivals. The charm's all still there but in a dashingly-styled, big-fanged, sharp-clawed kind of way.

Nice Jaguars indeed.

The five-litre Jaguar XF and XK will be launched in South Africa in June, followed soon afterwards by the supercharged and diesel models.

The smaller X-Type is being discontinued worldwide and the XF now represents the entry into the Jaguar den.

Next Generation Jaguar XJ Details Surface

The radical new Jaguar XJ will be revealed in London this July ahead of its launch later this year, and Jaguar wants to reclaim some of its traditional executive customers with the car.

Once the natural and patriotic choice for board directors everywhere in corporate Britain, the XJ has been replaced as the vehicle of choice by the Mercedes S-class. But with fresh styling, lightweight alloy construction, and new engines, the new XJ is designed to open up a new customer base.

Project X351, as the car is called, started as a reskin of the current XJ. But as the programme has developed, the engineering changes have become more extensive.

In fact, X351 will be the first Jaguar flagship to be launched with a retooled body and new engines. Traditionally Jaguar does what most other car makers do, and launches carry-over engines in a new body to keep costs down.

Much of the structure is also new; the rear structure has been changed to accommodate the XK's differential, which requires a new subframe and new mounts.

The lessons learned in the reskin and repackaging of the S-type into the XF are being applied to the XJ. For example, Jaguar started out with a coupe-like rear cabin, with a low back seat for a shallowly-raked rear window.

But the design has matured into a more practical shape, determined by the requirement to make the rear cabin as comfortable as possible for chauffeur-driven businessmen.

Styling is inspired by the XF, but well placed sources say that we should expect a much more dramatic and eye-catching look. 'People know that there’s new car coming, but they won't be prepared for anything like this,' said one source involved in the project.

The interior, too, is described as a 'big step forward'. Although features such as the XF's rotary gear selector are carried over, and the basic theme involves plenty of glossy wood and metallic trim, the new XJ takes the design to new levels of craftsmanship and quality. 'We knew we had to work on this,' said another project insider.

The flagship of the range will be the XJR, powered by the new 503bhp direct-injection 5.0-litre V8. With that amount of shove to launch a sub-1700kg saloon, the XJR is taking a major step into Bentley and AMG territory, while retaining Jaguar’s legendary balance of ride and handling.

The most critical engine is the new twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 diesel, with 271bhp on tap. Fuel economy ought to be close to the XF's; estimates put it at around 40mpg. The car will also get the lower-powered version of the same oil-burner, with 237bhp.

The V6's peak power and torque figures are very close to the V8 TDI which appears in the Range Rover. Jaguar is therefore not likely to engineer the XJ to take the V8 unit.

Is this the next Jaguar XJ?

Jaguars are fast and sleek, and few things in the animal kingdom--or the car world--can hang with them.

But spy shooters apparently can. And today we have shots of what could be the new XJ. This is the flagship Jag codenamed X351 due for 2011 on a reworked version of the current chassis.

Word is that the styling could get XF cues, though from these photos, it’s hard to tell. Frankly, that could be a ChevroletImpala under all that plastic. Cameras caught this cat during cold-weather testing in the snow, and we do see a hint of the coupelike styling in the C-pillar that could creep into the new model.

This update will have to hold us over till 2015, when a true redo is expected. The XJ’s last major changes were for 2004, though a light facelift arrived with the 2008 models.

This car has long been the Jaguar flagship, and its styling has been evolutionary for the most part. The XJ is what many Americans think of when they picture a Jaguar in their mind’s eye.

With high-performance models like the new XKR and XFR pouncing onto the scene, Jaguar is establishing itself once again as a power-player in the performance-luxury market. And to that end, the British automaker is reportedly planning on opening new facilities aimed at training drivers on how to get the most out of their cat-nip-laced performance machines.

According to Autocar, the first will be a new R Performance Academy at the company's test track near former sister company Aston Martin's headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England. Tutelage at the academy would be included in the price of a new XKR or XFR (and presumably any future performance-oriented Jaguars as well), and could be open to the public for a charge. Beyond that, however, Jaguar is also said to be looking into establishing a brand center akin to Mercedes World at Brooklands, where customers could test drive different models with different configurations to help them decide which specifications to order on their new cars. The larger facility would likely require moving to a more accessible location in the UK, while the projected £5m cost (about $6.9M USD) of the center will likely mean it won't be ready until a few years from now.

Jaguar XE: Jag's 911 Fighter

Jaguar is working on a new sports car that will be positioned under the XK, and aimed squarely at Porsche's 911. To be called XE, the car will likely make its debut at the 2011 Geneva Show, on the 50th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar E-Type, its spiritual successor

The XE will be based on the Jaguar range's flexible architecture, which accommodates the XK, XF and the all-new XJ which debuts this September at the Frankfurt auto show, and is designed to be a larger, more formal version of the XF, but more lowslung than the current, conservative XJ. Rumors of a smaller, more focused Jaguar sports car have been around for decades. Ford, which never truly understood Jaguar, cancelled work on one called the F-Type about 10 years ago (the illustration pictured is of the stillborn car), deciding to focus the company's resources instead on the development of diesel engines and the X-Type wagon.

But Ratan Tata, whose company now owns Jaguar, is supporting the development of the XE. "I don't believe we can afford to emerge from the recession as we are," he told British magazine Autocar recently. "We need to emerge with something shiny and new, which is why we are re-prioritizing the roadster right now." Tata has a much more personal connection with Jaguar than most of the Ford bosses previously responsible for the company's direction: his father once owned an XK120.

With the '10 XKR stickered at $102,000 including destination, there's room for the XE to tackle the Porsche 911 in the $80k-plus range. That means it'll also be up against the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, a challenge Jaguar might not have been allowed to make before Ford Motor Company sold Aston and then Jaguar/Land Rover. Design chief Ian Callum is emphasizing subtle heritage cues over out-and-out retro styling, so there'll be none of the F-Type concept from the early '00s. Besides being too old, the hoodline of that homage to the E-Type could not meet European pedestrian collision standards.

The new car shouldn't have any of the cues of the F-Type concept, pictured above.

The new 5.0-liter AJ-V8 Gen III engines -- 385hp in naturally aspirated form, and 510hp with a supercharger -- will give the smaller, lighter XE plenty of punch, with a low 4.0sec 0-60mph time feasible from the XER version. European buyers may also be offered the XE with the punchy 272hp version of the new 3.0-liter V-6 diesel that will soon debut in the XF sedan. With a reported 442lb-ft of torque available (just 19lb-ft less than the supercharged V-8) this engine could still deliver sub-six second 0-60mph performance with 35mpg gas mileage.

IN THE world of super models, XF stands for extremely fine. In the world of car owners, XF stands for extra fortunate, and in my world XF stands for extremely fabulous.

The Jaguar XF SV8 is like one of those rare people that continues to impress you with its classiness, performance and appearance the more you get to know it.

I love the classic lines of the Jaguar E-Type, the car that ranked first in the Daily Telegraph list of the “100 most beautiful cars” of all time, and have always yearned to own one.

Enzo Ferrari called it “The most beautiful car ever made”, but when all categories are taken into account the XF SV8 might overtake it’s predecessor on my top 10 list of things-to-own-if-I-had-the-dosh.

Like the Aston Martin, Rolls- Royce and Bentley, there’s something essentially English about the Jaguar XF.

Ensconce yourself in the gorgeous leather upholstery that sweeps from door to door via the dash and you’ll immediately feel the need to talk as if you’ve taken too rapid a bite from a steaming hot potato.

Suppress the keyless start/stop button on the centre console and the rotary shift knob, otherwise known as the Jaguar Drive Selector, slowly rises to attention to politely offer what one motoring journalist has termed “the Jaguar handshake”. It’s a secret handshake, like a nod and wink that only Jaguar XF drivers understand.

Knobs and dials all around the cockpit glow ruby red and phosphor blue as the car lights up at the touch of a button. The central touch screen puts everything into perspective, placing at your fingertips all that you require to enhance your drive.

Think superb audio control, user-friendly navigation and the technical settings of the car easily at hand, as well as a welcome rear parking camera and radar-based blind-spot monitors — you’ll never be surprised by a pole, or stationary vehicle again.

The seats are incredibly plush and comfortable and can be warm in winter and cool in summer — at the touch of the screen.

Impressive added extras include a steering wheel warmer and “Jaguar” sensors instead of buttons to activate cabin lights and open the glove compartment with futuristic-like ease.

The outside is no less impressive. It’s bold grille was inspired by the original 1968 Jag XJ, according to Ian Cullum, director of Jaguar design. It has succeeded in combining the style and class of past Jaguar models with the sleek lines of modern design.

To drive the XF is to fall completely in love with it. The car manoeuvres so effortlessly that you could almost convince yourself you were being chauffeured.

It’s the strong, silent type that responds instantaneously to your command with subtle feedback from the steering, brilliantly quick gear shifting and well-balanced body control.

If the car were a man it would be the perfect English gentleman. When it comes to cars, Winston Churchill, sums up my views: “I am easily satisfied with the very best.”

First Drive: 2010 Jaguar XKR

When Jaguar introduced its first-generation XK8, in the late '90s, it was pretty much the British luxury version of an American pony-musclecar. It was a bit too big to be considered a true sports car, and its dynamics were too sloppy for serious twisty-road driving. The second generation XK improved immensely, becoming more a true sports/GT.

Now with the 2010 model XKR, the "tuned" version of the car, Jaguar has really buttoned things down, making the car a serious rival for former family members in the Aston range as well as AMG-tuned Mercedes SLs and the BMW M6. It's basically the same thing Ford says it has done with its 2010 Mustang. And with these upgrades, Jaguar is warning the automotive world that there's room for a very competitive sports car, the smaller XE expected in 2011, to slide in underneath the $102,000 XKR.

For the 2010 model year, the standard XK8 gets the XF's all-new AJ-V8 Gen III 5.0-liter, rated 385 horsepower and 380 pound-feet, "unique to Jaguar and designed entirely in-house," replacing the 4.2L V-8. In supercharged "R" form, the engine makes 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet. Jaguar says it believes fuel efficiency will be high enough for the supercharged V-8 to become the first 500-plus horsepower engine not charged a gas-guzzler tax in the U.S.

Manufacturer's 0-60 mph estimates drop from 4.9 seconds for the old 4.2-liter XKR to 4.6 seconds, and the 50-70 mph passing time is 24-percent quicker, Jaguar says. The XKR's spring rates have been increased about 30 percent, the steering rack ratio is now 10 percent faster, common with the XKR-S and like the XFR, the '10 XKR gets Jaguar's Active Differential Control. It uses an electric motor to control the clamp load in the clutch pack and alter torque bias. Developed by Jaguar, it's a true locking differential, not an ABS or brake-based system.

The 2010 XKs also get the XF's JaguarDrive Selector recessing automatic transmission dial, new heated/cooled front seats, white daylight LED illumination with red pointers, and other interior upgrades. Outside, the XK has a facelifted front end that ends comparisons with the old Ford Taurus's ovoid grille, new LED taillamps, rear lower valance (color-keyed on XKR), LED repeaters in the sideview mirrors and new 19- and 20-inch wheels among its exterior upgrades.

On the road or track, it pulls strongly without having the "runaway train" feel of a Mercedes AMG V-8. Jaguar "R" models always have been more comparable to AMG Mercedes than to M BMWs (and like the Benzes, have come only with automatic transmissions). The XFR and XKR feel even more subtle than the AMGs. Jaguar has tuned the XKR's exhaust to be more aggressive-sounding than the XFR's -- a feature especially apparent in the convertible version -- with a regular backpressure burble coming from the six-speed automatic's rev-matched 3-2 downshifts. Still, you can motor leisurely through the streets of Monte Carlo or inch along Beverly Hills stop-and-go and think you're driving the "basic" XK8.

When you step into the throttle, the XKR simply lurches forward and disposes of passed traffic quickly and confidently. This is the car to drive when flying from Seville to Madrid simply takes too long, and requires you to remove your shoes and laptop. The tighter suspension and quicker steering make slaloming a breeze, and the tires provide plenty of grip. Nevertheless, this is still a large, relatively heavy car. And knowing what Jaguar can do with the dynamics of a GT as large the XKR, the upcoming XE (and an XER) should prove a formidable competitor to the 911.

Preview: 2010 Jaguar XFR

Sometimes, breaking up really is the best thing to do. Ditch the old ball and chain, lose a few pounds, join a new club and meet some new people. And, if the significant other just happens to be Ford, then perhaps you also dump the miserable, middle-of-the-road blandness that comes part and parcel with being under the Blue Oval’s thumb.

Certainly, Jaguar’s newish XF is nothing like the conservative, retro-styled S-Type it replaced. One of those coupe-styled sedans spreading through the luxury segment like wildfire, the XF is the first Jaguar sedan in almost a decade to break loose from the strictures of traditional styling and actually go back to what Jaguar has historically done best — design avant-garde, forward-looking automobiles. And now that Jaguar has tacked one of its famed R badges to the XF’s butt, the cat is truly out of the bag. The storied marque is determined to become the sporty car company it once was.

The evidence is everywhere. Jaguar even has a series of PowerPoint charts that show all its 2010 products moving further along a “sporting character” axis, presumably leaving the boring character axis far behind. Further evidence can be found in the new XFR’s spec sheet, which shows 510 horsepower from a new 5.0-litre supercharged V8.

Indeed, this all-new engine is the surest evidence that Jaguar under Tata ownership is much different than it was under Ford’s.
Though Jaguar pays passing attention to its previous owner’s new-found obsession with fuel economy — the new engine, Jaguar boasts, achieves the same fuel mileage as with the old — the real reason I am at Circuito Monteblanco near Seville is to test every one of those 510 stampeding horses.

The word that instantly comes to mind to describe the XFR’s attitude is sharp — as in the throttle responds sharply to one’s right foot, the huge 380-millimetre front ContiTeves discs respond sharply to a healthy stomp on the brake pedal and the Dunlop SportMaxx front tires (huge P255/35ZR20s) bite sharply into the tarmac when negotiating hairpins at speed. Where previous Jaguars, whether sedans or coupes, always felt soft compared with their direct rivals, the new XFR provides stiff competition for the BMW M5 and Mercedes’ CLS63 AMG.

In fact, the XFR feels more powerful than either — according to Jaguar’s own figures and my seat-of-the-butt-dyno — easily outpowering both at engine speeds below 3,000 rpm. And Jaguar’s research indicates that owners of sporty sedans seldom summon maximum warp factor beyond 2,500 rpm. So, although the XFR boasts that entirely creditable 510 hp at 6,500 rpm, it is the 461 pound-feet of torque that stretches all the way from 2,500 to 5,500 rpm that really impresses. Even compared with that monster-motored 6.2L AMG V8, the XFR’s low-speed grunt impresses. Also, BMW’s high-revving V10 needs at least 2,000 more rpm than the XFR’s grunty supercharged V8 to keep up. It’s amazing stuff and, for the first time in recent memory, Jaguar actually has the premier engine in this segment.

Though not to the same degree, the chassis is similarly aggressive. Even on the high-speed Monteblanco race track, the XFR never ran out of brakes, damping or grip. Tossed energetically into corners, the XFR reacts more like a BMW than a traditional — or at least a recent — Jaguar. Roll is well contained, grip remains assured well past the limit of common sense and, despite the most energetic of us hitting 225 kilometres an hour — there’s never any question of the suspension giving up the ghost and turning into a wallowing beast. As advertised, the computerized suspension — with continuously variable damping — offers a decent ride (though, it must be said, not as cossetting as that of older Jags), yet it can firm up enough to all but eliminate body roll.

Many of the car’s high-tech chassis minders work as well on the street as on the race track. There’s a new electronically controlled Active Differential Control system that emulates the action of a limited-slip diff without all the hassle. Even put to the test of a full throttle start in the wet while turning sharply failed to get the rear wheels spinning to any great degree. And there’s an enhanced vehicle stability control system that seems to be able to navigate even totally drenched hairpin turns despite the most ham-fisted driving. If it’s as competent at minimizing the effect of more normal driving gaffes, it should prove very worthwhile.

As for the rest of the XFR — i.e., the interior, trunk space, etc. — this is a top-of-the-line Jaguar and thus extremely well appointed. The pop-up round transmission knob and the rotating air conditioning vents take centre stage, but the interior is the same swaddled-in-leather hedonism that has been Jaguar’s trademark forever. My tester’s black-and-tan version was quite stunning as was a fit and finish quite beyond that of a Jaguar just five years ago.

But perhaps the best news is the new XFR’s price. At $85,300, it costs barely more than the last iteration of the S-Type R. That’s also $21,600 less than a 2009 M5 and a whopping $43,000 less than the Mercedes CLS63 AMG.

If this be Tata ownership, then we should consider it a blessing.

Jaguar plans hybrid Limo Green, hybrid 4x4s, hybrid everything

The government is now helping Jaguar with funding for a range of super-efficient hybrid vehicles.

The first of these concept hybrids, codenamed Limo Green, will be based on Jaguar's XJ luxury sedan. Unlike the parallel hybrid systems in the Prius, Limo Green will use a series hybrid system, whose combustion engine never directly powers the wheels. Instead, the engine powers a generator, which in turn charges a battery, which powers an electric motor, which moves the vehicle.

Propelling a car exclusively with an electric motor can be far more efficient than doing so with an internal combustion engine. Jaguar believes the Limo Green will achieve a 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds, emissions of 120g/km, and be capable of well over 1,000 miles on a single tank of petrol. The Prius, for reference, emits 104g/km, but takes four and a half days to get from 0-60mph*.

Jaguar's second eco project is a hybrid Range Rover that can run exclusively on battery power for up to 12 miles. Those with longer journies will be pleased to hear the vehicle delivers CO2 emissions of just 120g/km to 130g/km. Compare this to the standard Range Rover TDV8, which returns 299g/km and you'll start to understand how remarkable this is.

The concept Range Rover is based on Jaguar/Land Rover's "range extended electric vehicle", or REHEV platform. This, in layman's terms is a modular powertrain (a group of components that generate power and deliver it to the road) that can be "plugged" into a range of vehicles -- rather like Lego -- turning them into hybrids. If trials are successful, expect it to crop up in all manner of vehicles.

The final piece in Jaguar's eco puzzle is a flywheel hybrid system that is entirely mechanical in nature. Whenever the vehicle decelerates or brakes, the system captures kinetic energy in a high-speed rotating flywheel, which later releases this energy, powering the vehicle as it accelerates. Not only is this system less expensive than either parallel or series hybrids, it also has few drawbacks such as battery life and battery disposal. Oh, and Lewis Hamilton's new Formula One car uses a similar system -- 'nuff said.

There you go, boys and girls. Owning two Jags -- or even three -- won't be such a bad thing in the future. We'll bring you more on these developments as we get them.

Amerigon Climate Control Seat(TM) System Selected to be Standard Feature in U.S....

Rumored Jaguar XE Could Use Shortened XK Platform, Get V-6 Power

Rumors of an all-new Jaguar model have been floating around for months now and in the past 30 days, they've taken the form of a small, two-seat roadster. More details have surfaced today and it appears that this new roadster, dubbed XE, will ride on a shortened XK platform with a mighty 450-hp V-6 under the long hood.
According to Britain's Autocar, the XE is still on track to launch in 2011 or 2012, and it now may take the form of a smaller XK. The theory is that the XK's extruded aluminum frame would be much easier to shrink than any other Jaguar platform, making it the most likely candidate to underpin this new car. According to Autocar, Jaguar is also looking at spinning this new, smaller platform off with a long wheelbase version that could accept a sedan body.Power for this rumored SLK, Z4 and Boxster fighter is said to come from a beast of a V-6 that makes 450 hp and has been derived from Jaguar's new direct-injected 5.0L V-8. Unclear at this point is displacement and whether the V-6 would be supercharged, but it would almost have to be given the horsepower number being thrown around by Autocar. Also rumored is a supercharged four-cylinder engine that would return better fuel economy, emissions and weight distribution. Since Jaguar has no four-cylinder engine, it would likely have to source one from another automaker.

Jaguar Announces 2010 XF and XK Pricing

Jaguar today announced pricing for its 2010 Model Year line up. In January 2009, Jaguar revealed the new 2010 Model Year XF and XK which includes the new XFR, and next generation XKR. Both vehicles are true to the heritage of Jaguar’s legendary performance, delivering a superb balance of dynamic ability and refinement.

The 2010 XF will be priced starting at $52,000 MSRP. The XF Premium, with the new 5.0-liter naturally aspirated engine, will have a base MSRP of $57,000. The new XFR with the 510hp supercharged engine will retail for $80,000 MSRP. Also, taking the details that define luxury to higher standards, the 2010 XF Premium offers a Portfolio Pack for an additional $4,000. The Portfolio Pack offers the most luxurious XF specification, and features the naturally aspirated version of the new 5.0-liter V8.

As for the 2010 XK line up, it will start with a base MSRP of $83,000 (Coupe) and $89,000 (Convertible). The XKR with its 510 horsepower engine will retail for $96,000 (Coupe) MSRP and $102,000 (Convertible) MSRP.

Jaguar working on mid-engined flagship

Jaguar has just unveiled two of the fastest cars in its history, with the new 2010 XFR saloon and 2010 XKR sports coupe and cabrio making their respective debuts at this week’s Detroit Auto Show, however, according to latest reports the company is working on an even faster, mid-engined supercar. The new flagship will reportedly make its debut in around 12 month’s time and is being designed to take on the likes of the Audi R8 and upcoming Mercedes Benz SLC Gullwing.

This isn’t the new light-weight sports car that has been reported on for several months. The new Jaguar flagship is tipped to be called the XE, a name the company recently filed as a trademark in the UK.

The first hint that such a car could be in the works came from Jaguar’s managing director Mike O’Driscoll, who told AutoExpress that the “XK is the car that began a revolution for us, but it’s not the end of the story. I firmly believe the best car we could build to compliment this is a flagship coupe.”

The new XE is claimed to be an evolution of the R-Coupe concept from 2001. It will borrow components from the current XK but it will be the first mid-engined Jaguar since the stunning XJ220 was launched more than 18 years ago.

Power is expected to come from the recently introduced twin Roots-type supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III 5.0L V8 engine, but should be somewhat about the 510hp (380kW) found in the XKR and XFR.

NEW SUPERCHARGED XF IS OFFICIALLY THE FASTEST JAGUAR EVER AT 225MPH

Jaguar today announces that during a secret speed trial at the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, an XFR prototype recorded a stunning top speed of 225.675mph (363.188km/h), making it the fastest Jaguar ever.

The car - powered by the all-new AJ-V8 Gen III engine - beat Jaguar's previous speed record of 217.1mph (349.4 km/h) set in the XJ220 in 1992.* Paul Gentilozzi – the owner of Rocketsports Racing who successfully led the Jaguar XKR to five series victories between 2001 and 2006 in the Trans Am series in the USA - drove the car on the record-breaking run.

Running with minor aerodynamic and safety modifications to meet the requirements for a Bonneville run, the 225mph top speed was achieved with additional horsepower liberated by a remapped ECU, a modified air intake and exhaust system and revised supercharger settings. No internal engine components were changed and the six-speed automatic transmission was standard, including the gear ratios.

High-speed runs have become indelibly etched into the history of the Jaguar marque. Next year marks the 60th anniversary of the Jaguar XK120's record-breaking 132.6mph run set on 30 May 1949 on a deserted stretch of motorway near Jabbeke in Belgium.
