John Mauldin heeft het in zijn nieuwsbrief vandaag uitgebreid over… België. Zijn voorspellingen voor 2012 stemmen tot nadenken.

“The standout surprise candidate for sovereign default by end-2012 is Belgium. Moreover, first glance at the numbers gives no particular reason to expect Belgium to default. Its potential financial problems have been on the radar screen for so long that we have grown used to them, rather like those many parents who fail to recognise the repulsiveness of their offspring. With net government debt of €400bn, it is hardly a huge world borrower in absolute terms. Yet default could occur almost entirely by accident and the ripples be far greater than its size warrants, because of its position as the de facto federal capital of the EU. Belgium’s hastening car crash is not in current bond prices or exchange rates. ”

“Turning of the taps. As the third richest region in Europe (after Luxembourg and London) it could in theory exist as a wealthy city-state cum federal capital, but such a dream is a chimera. Derided eurocrats live a life apart. Even Brussels-born residents who benefit from their largesse often complain that the many organisations have created rich ghettos from which they are excluded. That these eurocrats are out of touch has been demonstrated both by pay and expenses enough to make a third world dictator blink, and recent demands for pay rises.
There is a commonsense test to apply to the financial future of Brussels. Most European countries are net recipients of aid from the EU. Of the minority putting money in, Germany dominates. Other small contributors such as Scandinavia or the UK are co-joined triplets with Germany. Forced to slash their own capital, social, and welfare budgets following the financial crash, they will not put more into Brussels. It is a matter of time before each country decides to reduce its net or gross cheques written out to various Brussels organisations; hence the second most important engine of Belgium’s economy (after the wider economy of Flanders) suffers its first ever post-war squeeze. This means it has less largesse to spread around – particularly in Wallonia. Moreover, Brussels is no longer so logical a geographic centre for a federal capital since the EU expanded eastwards. This has not been lost on the Germans (Brussels’ most significant honey provider). Its press and politicians have suggested for example that NATO be moved from a largely neutral country with minimal military capability to one with a little more vim, such as Germany. France would murder to get its hands on more EU institutions. Even the UK, ever-equivocal about what it really wants form the EU, and outside the euro zone, would like a few pointless but foreign funded pork barrels like EURATOM. Such major political changes will take time. Turning off the money spigot is easier and will happen sooner. ”

“To repeat, the net €400bn national debt is chicken feed – less than half the loss racked up by America’s AIG in 2007-8. And in wealthier times, the dream then shared by most of its members, of a politically united Europe would have ensured a quick bailout led by Germany. Mrs Merkel has already discovered that small cash subsidies to the profligate, such as Greece, are very expensive electorally. So foot dragging and evasion are sure to be the political order of the day. As the divorce commences, little is gained in double guessing the next phase. Whether Flanders goes alone as a fabulously rich small state or joins up with Holland (now the religious issue is moribund) is a moot point. Equally, whether France chooses to absorb Wallonia into greater France (Sarkozy’s wild card to escape likely electoral defenestration?) or to subsidise Wallonia as a client state again, is also an unknown. On every topic, there is no agreement on how these regions should evolve, nor who is responsible for the debts, further ensuring delay. ”

“If markets have re-learned one lesson recently, it is that small events have disproportionate results. Belgium ranks as the world’s 20th economy by size, accounting for 0.8% of world GDP. Greece before the fall was No. 28, with 0.6%; its problems continue to shake markets, both because they were unexpected and because of the risk of a domino effect. So too would be the problem with Belgium. It is yet another reason why government bonds are toxic and why at some stage their yields will blow out, thus capital values fall.
Obviously, not holding Belgian shares on a medium term basis is sensible unless valuation work has fully taken account of these unexpected risks (clients have zero exposure). Once again the euro would fall and the German export machine boom. Equity markets would rattle around for a while but then absorb the key lesson. For Belgium is yet another example, as if one was needed, that the supply of government bonds over coming years will continue to soar to unprecedented levels even. All commodity prices tumble when the supply is perceived as infinite. Meanwhile, equities would benefit. ”

We take the BR101 frequently to drive from Florianopolis to Joinville. A few weeks ago the Polícia Rodoviária Federal stopped just before Itapema ….a pensionated fisherman in a wheelchair. The self-made motorized wheelchair was driving at 80 km/h on the highway.

The “driver”, Francisco Carlos Roma, will have to appear in court for driving on the public road without permission or drivers license.

Warm? Hittegolf?
Aangename normale temperaturen, ja. Warm en hitte, dat gebruik je wanneer het kwik langer dan een week boven de 40° gaat met een relatieve vochtigheidsgraad boven de 90% en het kwik ‘s avonds niet onder de 27° zakt.
Gelukkig dat de World Cup 2014 in de Braziliaanse winter valt, anders hadden onze duivelkes in Maracana wel geweten wat quente betekent.

Waar denk denk je dat deze Perrier clip is opgenomen?  Juist… Rio. Quente !

Makes a great combo !

Vooreerst: België speelde niet op deze Worldcup omdat België geen plaats verdiende.  Daar waren de Belgen gewoon veel te zwak voor, ze speelden inspiratieloos, zonder ambitie en vooral: zonder klasse noch passie. Daar berusten Belgen in, zonder enige rancune. Niet meespelen, daar zijn we goed in.  Overigens: bestaat België nog?

Dat Nederland en Spanje het goed zouden doen en tot de halve finale zouden doorstoten, daar had je geen octopus voor nodig. Maar Nederland ambitieus noemen gaat een brug te ver. Gretig, dat wel, maar ambitieus, neen, niet ambitieus. Daarvoor had Nederland een absoluut gebrek aan klasse en passie. Want virilieit en passie, dat is niet hetzelfde hé.

Nederlandse viriliteit was in dit geval een synomniem voor “onbeschofte boertigheid”; zo hoort voetbal niet te zijn. Voetbal: dat is klasse en elegantie, daar hebben we op deze worldcup (te) weinig van gezien. In Brazilië noemen ze het spel van Nederland “chutebol”. Neen, geen natrapperij in Brazilë; daar beperken ze zich tot kritische zelfanalyze. Klasse dus. In schril contrast tot de Nederlandse “viriele” (?) Sneijders en Robben die niet in staat zijn zichzelf in vraag te stellen en zelfs na de match nog op de scheidsrechter moesten indreunen.

Komaan Holland, Howard Webb heeft er niets mee te maken. Kijk even naar de feiten:
Voor Nederland aan deze match begon waren ze al recordhouder van gele kaarten: 15 in totaal ! Ghana stond op de 2e plaats met 13 kaarten. Spanje stond onderaan de lijst met slechts 3 gele kaarten. Dus alle scheidsrechters in alle matches van Nederland waren dan partijdig?  Komkom, Nederland: wat gezonde zelfkritiek.

Alleen al wegens dat schril contrast stond het in de sterren geschreven dat Nederland op een finale zou verliezen: de trappers verliezen en massaal fouten maken.
Zo geschiedde. Nederland verzamelde 7 gele kaarten. Dat brengt Nederland op een absoluut record van 22 gele kaarten op deze worldcup ! Heeft iemand de historische records?

Ook interessant: het aantal gele kaarten delen door het aantal minuten speeltijd. Om maar te zeggen dat dit vooral een worldcup van intimidaties was; veel mooi voetbal kregen we niet te zien. Webb heeft daar dus niets mee te maken, de attitude van de Nederlandse spelers alles.

Resultaat: Spanje wint, volledig terecht.
De parallel tussen overwinnen en economie ging absoluut niet op; voetbal is een spel, geen gevecht, laat staan een knokpartij grauwe kroeg. Dat was Nederland vergeten en daar hebben ze de rekening voor betaald: Heitinga krijgt rood voor een fout op Andres Iniesta en diezelfde Andres Iniesta scoort. Er is dus geen parallel tussen voetbal en economie, nooit geweest. Misschien is er wel een parallel tussen voetbal en de geaardheid van de burgers een natie?

Chapeau voor Howard Webb om die oranje heethoofden enigszins in te tomen. Over oranje hoofden en testosterone gesproken: is het jullie ook opgevallen hoeveel van die Nederlandse schedels glimmen als kaasballen? Toeval of toch die testosterone?
En intriest dat die jongens er uiteindelijk ook niet in slaagden om hun verlies met klasse te ondergaan: alle Nederlandse spelers moesten ook nog na de match de ref blijven intimideren en toen Howard Webb op het podium kwam moest er boegeroep komen. Ze gaan het nooit leren… en dus ook nooit een wereldbeker winnen.

In 2014 afspraak in Brazilië.
Eerste voorspelling: Nederland haalt de halve finales niet. Platte intimidatie kleeft geen twee keer; om thuis in Brazilië te door te stoten heb je klasse nodig.

Een tweede voorspelling: Nederland+België gaan de Worldcup 2018 niet organiseren.  Gelukkig voor België.

Of zoals Nike het mooi zegt: “Dreams we can share, victory we cannot”.

Truly cutting the middle man. Is this competition for Bart Becks’ Sonic Angel?

1. Brazilië zal niet in de finales komen. Naar Braziliaanse normen wordt het een worldcup in mineur. Winnen is uitgesloten, Brazilië zal in 2014 thuis winnen en 2 keer na elkaar is van het goede teveel voor de FIFA. Tot voor kort dacht ik zelfs dat de kans bestond dat ze niet in de semi finals zouden komen; in hun selectie moeten ze uitkomen tegen Portugal en Ivoorkust. Maar nu Drogba van Ivoorkust buitenspel is met een gebroken arm denk ik dat er opnieuw een kans is dat ze in de semi finals komen.
2. Spanje, Engeland en Nederland zullen het erg goed doen. Twee van die landen zullen zeker de semi finals behalen; ik gok dat Nederland erbij zal zijn.
3. Het wordt een Europees land dat de worldcup wint; ze hebben het nodig voor de moraal. Ik gok op Engeland of Spanje.

Vandaag in De Tijd dit alarmerend bericht: andermaal niew record faillisementen.

“Het aan­tal fail­lis­se­men­ten in ons land blijft maand na maand pie­ken. Nieu­we cij­fers van het in­for­ma­tie­kan­toor Gray­don leren dat vo­ri­ge maand 825 on­der­ne­min­gen over de kop gin­gen. Daar­mee heb­ben we de slecht­ste mei­maand ooit ach­ter de rug… Met­een is ook voor de vijf­de maand op rij het ‘re­cord van de maand’ ge­bro­ken. In april gin­gen 802 be­drij­ven over de kop. Maart was de slecht­ste maand ooit met 1.​050 fail­lis­se­men­ten. Over de eer­ste vijf maan­den van dit jaar gin­gen in to­taal al 4.​298 be­drij­ven over de kop, 4,37 pro­cent meer dan in de­zelf­de pe­ri­o­de vorig jaar en an­der­maal een ab­so­luut re­cord.

Steven Kaplan deze week (take it for what it is worth):
“The media continue to harp upon the theme of which stocks should be bought now that this or that event has happened, rather than asking whether it is right to buy stocks. Only a few analysts have recommended “using caution”, with almost none actually advocating doing any meaningful selling. This is similar to the mood in the first half of 2008, when almost no one either recognized or wanted to admit that we could have begun a major bear market. We are likely to have a continued increase in the number and severity of negative divergences, so that regardless of whether equities and commodities are moving higher or lower, the internals will mostly continue to deteriorate as they have been doing for several months. Fewer and fewer equity sectors will be moving higher, in a classic narrowing of the rally.  If you know now that you will heavily buy commodity-share and emerging-market equity funds in 2011 and 2012, whenever they have become absurdly oversold and undervalued, and that you will eventually sell these funds roughly two to four years after you purchase them, then you are way ahead of the game. You could end up tripling your money, even after taxes, by making no other trades than buying very low in 2011-2012 and selling very high in 2014-2016. My personal profit from buying in late 2008 and early 2009, and selling in early 2010, far exceeded my total profits from all the trading I had done since I was born. Het meest genoot ik afgelopen week van deze speech/presentatie van Marc Faber op het Ludwig von Mises institute vorige week:

Niet dat ik pessimsitscih ben, integendeel zelfs. Niets zal zijn wat het vroeger was en dat betekent: ongeziene opportuniteiten. Uit de speech van Marc heb ik vooral onthouden:

1: “Nowadays everyone should have at least 50% of its assets outside of the developed world”
2: “But I already saw then in 1973 that Asia had some potential. Of course what has happened in the world over the past 40 years is really mind boggling… When people come to me and say, Marc you have been so lucky to have had the opportunity to have gone to Asia in 1973, I think that today there are far more opportunities today then then at that time.”

Afgelopen woensdag in België geland voor 10 dagen, een bevreemdende ervaring…
Pure chaos op de luchthavens, de kerk en staat op haar kop.

Maar vooral: niets is wat het lijkt, manipulatie en demagogie alom; en de Belgen blijven staan en kijken ernaar.

Nog donderdagavond op Phara: Marc Eyskens die tegen Alexander Decroo brult dat de spreads van de Belgische bonds in spreidstand gaan.  Alexander had geen stof tot reactie in de uitzending, en moest eerst  even Google raadplegen voordat hij een repliek kon geven; te laat.

Maar ondertussen steekt Strafor wel een waarschuwing op en ziet ook Jim Bianco geen uitweg voor Griekenland.

En dan is er nog de muntcrisis wereldwijd; ook Brazilië en Indië vervoegen de VS in de druk op China om de Chinese Yan te laten opwaarderen.
