The Cloud

It is clear the world of IT is on the brink of another evolution, yes indeed these are exciting times. The term “The cloud” has created more questions than answers within the technology community over the last year. When you sort through all the pundits and vendor definitions ultimately “the cloud” is a utopian place where everyone’s problems go away. In the cloud corporations achieve a predictable or fixed revenue streams that allows them to navigate the pressures of the most challenging economy we have ever faced. In “the cloud” organizations transfer risk, share costs and reduce complexity around the management of a service. In its current state the “the cloud” is a federation of external and internal cloud infrastructure that provides companies the ability to evolve their technology services into a well organized portfolio that provides on-demand expansion, superior up time, reduced costs, reduced risk, flexibility and better manageability. When you break down an external or internal data cloud into its basic elements it is composed of compute, storage, network and applications. A “private cloud” is a federation of internal and external clouds that constitute the full logical IT Service delivery environment for an organization. The only catch in moving into this utopia is around the formation of open standards that make infrastructure fairly ubiquitous and easy for organizations to move their services from provider to provider based on their needs. In April 2009, the DMTF or Distributed Management Task Force established an incubator leadership board consisting of AMD, Cisco, Citrix, EMC, HP, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Novell, Red Hat, Savvis, Sun Microsystems, and VMware [click here]. Today, no specific standards currently exist for enabling interoperability between private clouds within enterprises and hosted or public cloud providers. DMTF's Open Cloud Standards Incubator will focus on addressing these issues by developing cloud resource management protocols, packaging formats and security mechanisms to facilitate interoperability.

So what is the first step in moving into this model? Well, with any change in life you have to take a look at the person in the mirror and make the change there first. Organizations will focus on making their internal infrastructures function and feel more like “Internal Cloud” infrastructures through the use of virtualization. Yes, the majority of data centers will be 100% virtualized within 3 – 5 years!!! As cloud computing standards emerge and are formalize, organizations will extend their internal cloud infrastructures into this federated structure as standards, cost, security and flexibility needs can be met. Who will emerge as the leading cloud provider in the future? Well that choice is largely up to you… the consumer!!!
