Olympus Malaysia Website updates for OM-D E-M5

Just recently, Olympus Malaysia updates their website for OM-D, but still no estimated pricing published. However, 43rumors.com estimated the price as:

Olympus OM-D E-M5 body only: $1000 or 1.100 Euro
Olympus OM-D E-M5 with 14-42mm lens: $1100 (don’t know the price in Euro yet)
Olympus OM-D E-M5 with 12-50mm lens: $1300 or 1300 Euro

Checkout regularly the retail price at Olympus MY here.

Terada-san said in the interview, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan will be the first countries to receive the OM-D in mid or late March. So, Malaysia should be after that. I thought if it available before Brunei 4x4 Challenge on 16-18 March, I can test the new Olympus OM-D for 4x4 action photography.

Price in Malaysia

No information about pricing of the OM-D at the moment in Malaysia. Though, 43rumor has some info:

Olympus OM-D E-M5 body only: $1000 or 1.100 Euro
Olympus OM-D E-M5 with 14-42mm lens: $1100 (don’t know the price in Euro yet)

No Built-in flash despite the big hump at the top of the camera, therefore its not for everyone camera, just like the E-1.

Look at that collection of Olympus lenses and the new Olympus OM-D E-M5! Isn't that beautiful? and costly some more. I read about someone posting why Olympus going backward with that the classics. The answer is simple, when the other camera makers are happy with future design, why not Olympus offers the little bit different design using the legendary OM series? It is not killing anyone (except killing their wallet). The functions are the same, taking photos and sharing the great moments. It is not relevant but, why those car makers revived their old model and making the refreshed new beautiful design while retaining its classic design. You can name all that cars. The same thing with Olympus OM-D, wait for the real OM-D E-M5 and people in every walk of life will get it in no time. I wonder when will this Olympus OM-D will be in Malaysia.

Now, I'm following anxiously this recent exciting Olympus classic, the OM series. Although, I have never really used the legendary OM cameras back then (only some nikon, canon and pentax SLR), but the digital OM sounds great. Well done Olympus, that what you should do long time ago. Now, It is understandable why Olympus produced the weather-shield 12-50mm m4/3 previously. I have the strong feeling again as I first purchased the Olympus E-1.

OM-D reported that it has in-body image stabilization, magnesium body, 16MP sensor, and most exciting is up to ISO25,600!. Price wise, could be RM3500++?

Panning + Zoom Combo Effect in 4x4 Challenge Photography

Camera: Olympus E-1 + 12-60mm

The technique "panning + zoom combo" is a method to add blurred motion (simultaneously panning and zoom) effect to the action. This method is useful especially when confronting a moving vehicle or subject from the front position of the photographer. It can be done with zoom in or zoom out while panning to the moving subject facing front or slightly to the either side of the subject.

How to do it:

1. Prefocus to the location of the subject you want to capture

2. Zoom in (or out) the lens and get ready to shoot in burst mode

3. Press the shutter while panning and zoom in (or out) in the same time following the moving subject facing front.

This method is indeed hard to implement and sometime will trash all shoots, but practice makes perfect. Although you can simulate the similar effect in post-photo editing, but doing that on location is more interesting than spending time to edit the similar effect on computer. You have the choice.

Here are some examples of my experiment on this method.

This is exactly from the front of the vehicle with panning + zoom combo.

Bad Experience at Nabalu Lodge Restaurant

Really feel embarrassed to my friends from other states which visiting Sabah on their holiday. When I say embarrassed, then I mean so. I thought that the restaurant is still at their best service and menu while in 2009.

Earlier, I was humbly suggested my friends to dine at this restaurant because of easy reach on that time. On arrival, seen the waitress busy here and there. Looking around, few tables still waiting for their meals. I started to feel something not quite good with their service. We continue our orders using new very simple menu booklet. Some of us ordered the Nabalu Fried Rice which looking good at their big photo outside of the restaurant. Then, we waited for almost 30 minutes or more for the meals. Ok, there are quite many customers and the waitress run here and there to return the orders. Its like too busy and noisy too. When my order arrived, I was puzzled and looking at the Nabalu Fried Rice. For RM9.00 its a ridiculous from a restaurant with a lodge.

We asked the waitress if is that is really the Special Nabalu Fried Rice, she confirmed. I said that's bad because the photo of Nabalu Fried Rice is different. She said now, it different. Since when? and the price should be just RM5.00 or less for such fried rice. Egg Fried Rice at one of the restaurants at KK is only RM3.50 with some decoration.

Oh, I forgot.. the other restaurants are not a hotel restaurant. Fine, but they should prepare their food like a hotel restaurant then. Sorry, Nabalu Lodge Restaurant.. upgrade your service don't embarrass Kundasang.

Finally, alhamdulillah.. I was confirmed to join Borneo Safari this year as 4WD-SUV.com media photographer. Good time to escape from my research work for a while.

I will only bring very minimal gears consist of Olympus E-1+12-60mm, E-3+14-42mm, 70-300mm and flash. I wish that I could persuade Olympus to loan and test the new pre-production E-5 in this event. But, it would not happen because it is too late to make a deal, also it's impossible for ordinary me to loan the camera. Nonetheless, I still can help to promote Olympus brand hehe..

4x4 ACKL Club Challenge Trophy 2011

This is the first time I ever photographed a 4x4 challenge outside of Sabah and new place is always thrilling. Although that I was only able to take photo on the first day, but it was a very interesting meeting new friends, cars, competitors and how they managed the special stages systems. Not forgetting the powerful sound of the V8 engine on Isuzu Trooper. The event held at the jungle of Janda Baik, Bukit Tinggi Pahang, some 50km from KL. Few photos for viewing here:

Portraiture

I rarely do portraiture photography due to lack of knowledge, skill and lenses which can produce nice looking portrait. However, I did join a fellow group of photographers based in Kota Kinabalu for a portraiture photography at KDCA Penampang recently. This is my second time trying some skill on portraiture. The first time was organized by other fellow friends at Mesilau, here.

This time, I can say that I was failed because my first step was completely wrong. I did not reset the ISO and some other settings, like too eager to shoot the model without first checking the camera setting. Only after 10 shoots and I realized my mistake. I better continue the 4x4 photography.. =) Anyway, it sometime fun to do some portraiture photography.

Using: Olympus E-1 + 12-60mm & 70-300mm

This is Leydia with KadazanDusun traditional costume. The ISO of this photo was 800 which I did not check before jumping into action.

Now, the ISO was reset to 100. Trying the BW with noise from Olympus E-1 camera.
