Quercus & Co: The Caravan Collection

Apologies if you arrived here looking for pictures of caravans but I do have something lovely... if you are 'into' wallpaper that is.

I recently came across Quercus & Co, a Sydney based printing company launched fairly recently in May 2012 by Adam Jones who taught colour and design at the University of Technology Sydney. The designs are hand painted in watercolour and then printed onto heavyweight matt wallpaper capturing the washy detail and the bleeding edges of the paint.

Inspired by vintage Kilim rugs, when the paper is hung I image it would provide the feeling of the room being wrapped in a blanket. Also, for an added effect the rolls can be 'dip dyed' to give the impression they have been dipped in paint.

I will be using the 'Tapestry' pattern (top image) in a conceptual project that I'm working on at the moment for one of my final year assessments. The starting point for the concept is a 'grid' and I think the pattern fits in perfectly with this.

Palm Springs Street Tour

A few months have passed since we travelled to Palm Springs but it is still on my mind and influencing some projects I am working on at the moment. So today I am bringing you a walking tour of the streets of Palm Springs. The following houses are in the Las Palmas area which is in the region of the Kaufmann House that I sadly couldn't visit because it wasn't open to the public at the time (but there's always next time??).

Looking through the photographs I took of these houses brings back great memories for me and if you enjoy mid-century design you might like to see them too. Continue on for more mid-century goodness...

Palm Springs feels as though you have walked back into time. It is highly concentrated with low-line 50s and 60s buildings that contrast with the tall desert mountains. It makes for magnificent views and there were design enthusiasts from around the world who visited for Modernism Week.

Sadly some of the homes (not shown here) have been renovated to remove the architectural detail that gives the buildings their character but there are many that have been preserved and it is these that make Palm Springs so special I think.

Some people have asked me what I thought of Modernism Week and so I thought I would put together a few tips if you are thinking of visiting:

Reserve your tickets early because the best tours are sold out super fast!
Some people who visited the Sinatra house came dressed in 50's style so if that's your thing then that's the place. You'll need to check if it is open when you visit.
Palm Springs is small. We hired a car from Las Vegas and drove there. I would suggest hiring a car to explore the town.
Las Palmas is where a lot of the celebrity homes are and there are informative walking tours that you can take (but book in advance). Most of the photos in this post are taken from the walking tour.
If you are traveling with kids, check the Modernism Week website for whether there are kid-friendly events because some of them aren't (ahem, Martini party!)
We stayed for 3 days and didn't get a chance to see it all so if you can stay longer I would suggest it. The Villagefest markets are on Thursday nights featuring arts, crafts and entertainment. Streets are closed off for the event so be sure to get a parking spot early.
Visit Trina Turk. Trust me.
The antique stores are to die for. I wanted to take every chair home and if I could, I might have!

One day I hope to fill all of the walls in my home - top to bottom - with artwork, predominately Australian art. Our collection is coming along nicely with the living room almost completely full of our favourite pieces and we are keeping an eye out for more.

So it was nice to come across the work of Gold Coast artist Anna Carey who was recently featured on The Design Files. Anna's work are photographic images of the tiny architectural paper models that she makes. The models are pieced together based on her recollection of buildings that are familiar to the Gold Coast landscape.

The mid-century buildings really capture the spirit of the city and I was drawn to her work for the personal memories that the work represented to me of my time holidaying in the Gold Coast. I'm not one for the new shiny buildings that tower over the city. It is these old dilapidated 50's and 60's buildings that I adore most.

Anna shoots her models outdoors using a 50mm lens and lying her stomach. The buildings become the focus while the background is blurred and become almost dream-like. Her work is selling quite quickly through Artereal Gallery in Sydney and I have a few of her images on my wish list.

New workshops at The School + Interview with Megan Morton

It has been fun seeing The School, run by interior stylist Megan Morton, take off over the last year. I attended the very first workshop and since then The School's program has expanded greatly. Do you follow Megan on instagram? No doubt you have seen all the fun things she is up to.

The School's program includes workshops for kids between the ages of 6-15 years of age. There will be 4-day and 2-day workshops held in Sydney over the July holidays with spaces limited to 12 kids per class. Each day, kids will work with different teachers with various classes exploring printmaking, sewing, paper crafts, photography and also a 'fiesta day' (if only Robbie was just a little older I think he would really enjoy it!).

What inspired you to start The School?
Three kids and no daycare sorted!!!

What has been The School’s highlight so far?
For me, it was the adults and kids working collaboratively on the Marsha golemac chandelier. We hosted a free class and together, over half a day, made an incredible installation. I can't take it down! Ever!

The School has recently been travelling to various locations around Australia. Where can we expect to see The School next?
We are in development of a New York City program which will be wonderful!

What is on your wish list right now?
One of those cashmere mattress toppers! I am the perfect candidate for sleeping related marketing!

These photos were taken last weekend on the way out to lunch. There is an industrial area a few minutes drive from where I live. Side by side concrete buildings in not very exciting colours and then BAM. Colour.

A new fashion + furniture concept store has opened in Sydney on George Street, near ivy and I popped in last night for their launch event. I had previously peeked inside from the window (it was closed at the time) and was looking forward to seeing more of The Aparttment.

I spotted furniture from Max Sparrow, a Cadrys rug, artwork, fern plants, other home accessories and a fashion collection that featured studs, leather and black + white.

The store is run by Claire Coppins, the creative talent behind Australian fashion label Tighttigers, and her vision was to create a retail space that feels as though you have walked into a woman's Parisian home. There is a lot to see in the cosy space. I personally loved one of the sofas but had already placed a deposit on another earlier that day - tempting though!

Out with the pink

I'm trying to 'de-pink' the house. Not that anyone living here has a problem with it but I have realised lately how much of the colour has been sneaking in.

The pink sofa in the living room is one of my favourite pieces but we will be relocating it to another room to make way for a new bigger sofa - one that we can lie on without our limbs dangling off the sides. It'll be bliss!

The new sofa is a three-seater and the space is small so it will be a tight squeeze but one that will be worth it for the added comfort. Photos when it arrives.. in 12 weeks!

In other living room related news, there are a few other decorative changes planned including replacing the 'For Like Ever' print with the new artwork we purchased. We had the new artwork hanging for a few days and then there was an accident last night. Can't wait to have it fixed and hanging again (with super stronger hooks).

The living room will get there. It has become an amalgamation of furniture collected over time and I'm looking forward to it coming together soon.

I took these photos before heading to work yesterday. The sun at the front of the house in the morning is blindingly bright, I could barely open my eyes.

Which reminds me I'm on the look out for a beautiful pair of sunglasses since I broke my last pair. Any recommendations?

We will be celebrating Easter this weekend with my family which typically involves a big feast for lunch, cracking red eggs and lots of loud conversation. After lunch we usually play board games while some of us take a nap, followed by a Turkish coffee and desserts.

It is the same every year and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Williams-Sonoma, West Elm and Pottery Barn opens in Sydney

Today I headed into town to see the new Williams-Sonoma, West Elm and Pottery Barn Sydney stores before the grand opening tomorrow. Want to see what to expect in store?

I most enjoyed seeing the Cooking School at Williams-Sonoma (the very first for the company worldwide) and discovering that West Elm supports local Sydney artists. The products are varied in style with a large range spread out over two floors.

Is there anything you see here that catches your eye? Forgive me for the iPhone photos. I didn't want to whip out a massive camera on the tour.

Hello! I have had my head deep in assessments lately and it leaves little room for anything else. Final year and I'm trying to get through it all.

Our class won the final year exhibition design concept. It is the first time a part-time class has won and I'm proud of us but it means we will be even busier this year pulling off the design. That's also the fun part though - seeing your ideas become a reality.

My dining table looks like this at the moment.

I spent the weekend finalising an assessment which involved designing a shipping container space (not related to the exhibition concept). The studio is being used to store furniture at the moment for a (real-life) restaurant I was working on and there is not a lot of space left to work.

I can't wait to get the dining table back again so we can eat dinner on it!

MAH Collection: Blending science, art and fashion

A friend visited from Singapore last year and we caught up while she was in town. The conversation was naturally about all things creative. Ondina is an interior designer and we studied together for a short while before she moved overseas. She was working on launching a new fashion label and I was inspired by her enthusiasm and ideas.

MAH, which stands for Mad About Hue, was just recently launched by Ondina. The collection of scarves are designed through collaborations with artists and for her first collection she collaborated with Sydney-based Dr. Jim Frazier who is an award winning wildlife cinematographer and creator of crystal paintings.

She shared with me various images of his creations. Abstract and surreal landscapes in various colours and patterns. My mind instantly tried to connect the images with nature - trees, leaves, mountains, caves - I could see it all in the abstract crystal paintings.

The crystals are manipulated in various solutions using heat and tiny brushes and implements to alter the natural growth rate of the crystals and their structure. The landscapes are created by painting over the crystal structures that begin to form which has the effect of stopping the growth while the movement of the brush stroke creates further small crystals and shapes off the edge of the brush stroke. Light is important in producing the final artwork. Depending on the angle that the light strikes the crystals it can change their colour and appearance.

The paintings are then digitally produced and manufactured into silk scarves. The first collection which you can see here is called 'Quaintrelle'. A beautiful blend of science, art and fashion. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Exotic Birds

David and I visited Signature Prints on Saturday. I wanted to see if there was any suitable fabric in the offcuts pile that could be used for a couple of projects. We both share a love of art and not surprisingly we were distracted by the artwork hanging on the walls.

The Exotic Birds are limited edition and come in four colourways. We loved the ones we saw on display and when we asked Helen Lennie if there were any more she pulled out this gem from the factory.

Beautiful soft blue, silver and yellows - colours selected by the head printer at Signature Prints and as a nice bonus this is the very first edition! It is off to the framer's and hanging in our home soon.

When was the last "big" purchase you made for your home?

I have Florence Broadhurst on my mind again.

I have written about her designs many times on ish & chi. I have textiles and wallpaper in my home and I also toured the factory for a behind the scenes look at the production process.

This week I will be attending an event for the launch of a new Broadhurst soft textile range. The invitation arrived with the above image printed on the front and since then I haven't been able to shake off the thought that this pattern, in either the green or yellow colourway, would look lovely with the old cane chairs I have yet to re-upholster.

I have looked at many fabric options and when I referred back through the ish & chi archives recently I realised I have been pining over cockatoo motifs since 2009. It seems my mind is set, now I just need to follow through..

House Tour: Frey House II

The more I write about Modernism Week and the homes I saw and visited, the more I realise just how much of an impact it has had on me. Albert Frey (1903 - 1998) is one of the most prolific modern architects who lived and worked in Palm Springs. Amongst many other buildings, he designed two private residences for himself one of which is Frey House II built in 1964. Neither are usually open to the public however Frey House II was opened for tours during Modernism Week and I was fortunate to see the house in person. Read on to see more...

There were two things that surprised me initially about the property, one of which is how high up in the desert mountain it is located with breathtaking views of Coachella Valley. The other is the way in which Frey has integrated the house into the surroundings, and quite literally - there is a large boulder embedded within the design of the home that becomes a divider between the bedroom and living space. A light switch has been installed within the rock to make it functional too.

The house is humble with a small footprint at approx. 75 square meters. It is seated in perfect solitude in the hillside and is so simple in its design. It almost feels as though Frey didn't want to touch the landscape at all by building a structure on it and when the glass sliding doors are open the home feels as though it is seamlessly part of its environment. Very beautiful to experience.

How often do we think about needing more space in our homes, more rooms, more storage? And here is a home designed to have less and yet it has so much to offer (including an amazing and not-very-child-friendly pool!). I hope you enjoy these photos.

When I was holidaying in Greece years ago we stayed at my grandmother's house for a week. It was a tiny one bedroom house with a small doorway that you had to bend down to enter through otherwise you would hit your head. My grandmother was a short lady so it was fine for her!

We spent much of our time relaxing at the front of the house, sitting on old chairs, playing cards and eating figs we had picked that morning. I have such great memories of that trip. We met many locals who would stop by to say 'hello' and chat to us over the fence. Sometimes they would come in for a coffee, other times they would continue on but the conversation was nice. The village had a wonderful community feel to it and everyone knew each other.

Where I live I don't really know my neighbours. People seem to enjoy their privacy and aside from the polite wave there isn't much conversation. I believe part of the reason for this is that we don't seem to linger outdoors. We seem to relax indoors or in our backyards.

New outdoor furniture arrived and our new favourite spot sit is on the front balcony. We have started to get to know our new neighbour across the road and her young boys by simply being here and striking up conversations. Who knows, maybe we can achieve a bit of the village life in Sydney?

Hotel Tour: The Ace Hotel & Swim Club

When we first arrived in Palm Springs I didn't know what to make of this small village. It was late and there wasn't much to see so we settled into the Ace Hotel, unpacked, explored the grounds and ate dinner and marshmallows by the communal fireplace. We met (somewhat drunk) locals staying at the hotel because their home was being renovated and chatted for a while. We listened to their stories and we talked about kangaroos, as you do.

The next morning we were greeted with mountains and tall palm trees. I'm grateful the homes in Palm Springs are low lying so that you can really appreciate the full view of the desert landscape. Mother Nature is beautiful.

The interior of the rooms have a camping feel to them - nothing quite like any hotel I've stayed in previously. The curtains are made of tents and they have used sustainable materials to design a room that is functional and simple and filled with vintage furniture.

We didn't know what to think of the hotel at first but it is the attention to detail in the design that draws you in - the pockets in the headboards where you can store books and other things, the hooks on the walls that allow you to hang your own pictures and personalise the room and the bedside lamps that glow red were an unexpected feature.

This old mid-century motel has been turned into a fun place to stay. I wish I could go back.

Fashion Friday: Wiggle Dress

When I bought this house at auction I hadn't viewed it in person and of course, I was worried about what I had bought! I remember visiting it for the first time and the view from the balcony blew me away. I knew we had made the right decision. I still enjoy the view. Day or evening - it is one of my favourite spots.

New furniture arrived for the balcony this week and I'll share more next week - it's beautiful! In the meantime these photos were taken tonight while we waited for a lift to arrive. That might explain why they are pixelated. I wore a new wiggle dress to my dinner date with David. I literally have to wiggle to get into it but once it was on I felt incredible.

House Tour: Frank Sinatra Twin Palms Estate

Never before have I been to a house tour that is buzzing and full of people. Design enthusiasts, industry professionals, photographers, fellow bloggers and Sinatra fans - it was a great crowd with some people dressed in retro outfits to get into the spirit of the era. It was fun to see!

It was also a challenge to photograph the estate with so many people around and I'm pleased to be able to share these with you. You don't won't to know the lengths I went to so that I can take these photos sans people in them!

A little history of the estate:

Located in the Movie Colony of Palm Springs, the estate was designed by architect E. Stewart Williams in 1947 and it was Sinatra's primary residence from 1948 and 1957. Legend has it that the two palm trees located at the front of the property were the tallest in the valley and Sinatra would erect a Jack Daniels flag between them to let his movie star neighbours know when it was cocktail hour at the estate.

When Sinatra approached Williams to design the estate he originally requested a Georgian design. Williams didn't feel the Georgian style would suit the area and he drew up two plans - a Georgian design and a Modern design. Thankfully Frank chose the second design and the estate is now listed as a historic site and is a great example of mid century modern architecture. I enjoyed seeing the detail of the property, the interesting door handles, the use of textiles, the lamp base in the bedroom above that mimics the frame of the dining room chairs. It has been fitted out well.

Sinatra and his second wife Ava Gardner lived in the estate and are said to have had many arguments including one that involved Sinatra apparently throwing a champagne bottle at Gardner's head, missing, and cracking the sink above. The crack still appears, although it is only faint.

Fashion Friday: PS. I love you

Palm Springs was everything I imagined it to be. The low-line architecture against the tall desert mountains. The palm trees. Postcard perfect.

I have more to share from this resort city and its architecture but it's Friday and that means I show you photos of me wearing clothes and smiling.

Okay, this won't be solely a style post as I really want to show you where these photos were taken instead...

We stayed at the Viceroy Hotel for a night. Its location is right in the heart of Palm Springs and it has the signature touch of Kelly Wearstler which was nice to see in person.

I'm inspired by the bright red colour of the door above. It is the perfect orange-red colour. Our front door could use another coat of paint and maybe it's time to consider a new colour while I'm at it?

The tile work in the above photo is a clever decorating idea to turn ordinary square tiles into a beautiful feature wall. And a good example that tiles don't have to be used in wet areas only! This was in the foyer.

Museum Tour: Vegas Boneyard (a.k.a The Neon Museum)

One of the main reasons I wanted to visit Vegas was to get a bit of a feel of 'old Vegas' and there was no better way than heading to The Neon Museum where the old Vegas signs go to die.

If you are a fan of typography or simply like signage then I think you might enjoy these images!

The scale of these pieces are amazing. We were given a history of where the signs used to live and how they ended up at the museum. We were also given tips on how to work out the age of the signs through the way they were constructed and the materials used.

I recommend the tour if you are in the area. I only wish I could have taken some of these signs home with me! They would look pretty amazing in an interior space.. or.. hey why not, on top of the roof of my house, ha!
