Cambridge-Isanti got off to a great start in the Section 7AAA playoffs by hammering host Blaine 12-4 in the May 22 opening round, fueled by big bats and a tight defense.

The No. 9 seed Bluejackets (9-11) will need to stay in attack mode for their May 24 quarterfinal matchup with top-seed Forest Lake (19-1) who is ranked 2nd in Class AAA. The winner of that game enters the double-elimination format May 30 at Forest Lake.

More 7AAA quarterfinals will be No. 4 Duluth East vs. No. 5 Anoka (5-0 over Princeton May 22), No. 2 Duluth Denfeld vs. No. 10 North Branch (5-0 over Grand Rapids) and No. 3 St. Francis vs. No. 11 Chisago Lakes (6-4 over Andover).

At Blaine on the hot & windy Tuesday, the C-I girls got on the board in the first with a two-out rally when Katie McCann walked and Taylor Bowker singled. Amanda Hanson then pulled a 3-run homer to left-center. Blaine countered with two runs off starter Kate Hammero in the bottom of the inning.

Amanda Hanson ignited the Bluejacket offense with a parked 3-run homer in the top of first at Blaine.

The Bluejackets broke it open in the third with six runs. Erica Epsen led off with a single, then consecutive walks were coaxed by McCann, Bowker and Hanson (BI). Off the Bengal reliever, Kendall Sandberg and Hannah Thiry (2BI) knocked home runs to forge a 9-2 edge.

Jess Golden relieved an injured Hammero in the third and held Blaine to one run over her three innings. In the fourth, Bowker stole a run by forcing an error at third base. The Jackets made it 12-3 in the fifth when Josie Potrament doubled and Epsen followed with a 2-run homer pulled down the left-field line.

Taylor Bowker forced a throwing error at third and finished scoring three runs in the playoff victory.

• On May 16, C-I defeated St. Michael-Albertville 9-4 with 5 runs in the ninth on hits by Thiry, McCann, Bowker and Hanson. Ronni Risch got the win with 3 relief innings.

Becker solidified its Mississippi 8 championship by sweeping the Jackets 6-4 and 7-6 May 17.

C-I closed the regular season with a 13-3 home win over Princeton May 18. Bowker and McCann had 2BI singles to fuel the offense, and Hammero pitched six strong innings. In Game 2, C-I led 8-2 in the fourth when the game was called due to lightening.

Mississippi 8 Softball FINAL: Becker 9-3, 13-6; Big Lake 8-4, 10-6; Rogers 6-6, 11-9; Buffalo 6-6, 8-10; St. Michael-Alb. 5-7, 9-11; Cambridge-Isanti 4-8, 9-11; Monticello 4-8, 9-9.

After getting pumped up at their “State Send-off Pep Fest” on Thursday, the Cambridge-Isanti Adapted Bowling squad enjoyed another successful trip to the May 18 State meet at Eden Prairie’s Brunswick Zone.

Bluejackets earning State medals May 18 in Eden Prairie were junior Jon Furlong (3rd place boys CI Division), senior Chrissy Schermerhorn (7th place girls PI Div.) and freshman Cory Hoover (6th place boys CI Div.)

Three Bluejackets took home medals from the 28-school gathering. Jon Furlong totaled a 441 series to place 3rd in the CI division, with a high game of 110. Cory Hoover was 6th in the CI division with a 436, and Chrissy Schermerhorn placed 7th in the PI girls division by closing her career with a 387.

“I was extremely proud of all athletes because this is a very overwhelming day (6:30 a.m. departure from CIHS) in a facility that is packed full of people, distractions and limited space,” said Jacket Coach Susan Kaspar. “I was so excited to watch how 11 out of our 12 athletes bowled over their six-game dual-season averages.”

Also in the CI boys division for Satrom’s Bluejackets, Austin Sprandal placed 24th (401) and Joshua Cook was 55th (372). In the CI girls, Abby Keller finished 47th (361), Brianna Hoover was 55th (352) and Chrissy Baker took 72nd (321).

The PI boys tourney saw Jackson Larson place 14th for the Bluejackets (388), Cody Beardslee place 20th (374) and Dominic Slattery closed his career with a 24th-place 361. In the PI girls, Victoria Koukol added a 15th-place 351 which included a high game of 150.

The bus ride back from Eden Prairie was not the final note for the Bluejacket Bowlers, however.

Two of the team captains, Joshua Cook and Cody Beardslee, pumped up the audience and their teammates with “Go Big Blue!” speeches at the May 17 Pep Fest at CIHS.

“As we arrived back to CIHS, we were greeted with many, many students and staff lined up outside of CIHS doors clapping as we walked through the ‘gauntlet’ with pride,” replayed Coach Kaspar.

Along with representing the school well over their bowling career, this year’s senior group has been a strong building block for the program over its tenure.

“When I reflect on the season, it is always a difficult time for me as I shake hands and wish our six seniors that we are losing to graduation the best of luck as they move onto the next chapter in their lives. I have grown to respect all six of them so much over the past four years of coaching them and/or having them in my Adapted Physical Education class,” said Coach Kaspar.

She finished, “These six seniors demonstrate character traits above and beyond their age-alike peers. They are role models in and outside of the classroom, they have a sense of humor like no other group I have coached, and I will wholeheartedly miss them next year. Like I mentioned at the Pep Fest, we can learn a lot from each other if we provide one another with an opportunity to be a leader.”

Cambridge-Isanti Boys Tennis’ team season came to a close with a 4-3 loss to No. 4 seed Andover in the …

Cambridge-Isanti Boys Tennis’ team season came to a close with a 4-3 loss to No. 4 seed Andover in the May 21 Section 7AA South Subsection Team tourney. The Bluejackets will now send entrants into the 7AA South Singles & Doubles tourney at St. Francis on May 24.

“This was probably our best team match performance this season. After losing to Andover 5-2 one week ago, we came ready to compete and lost a close 4-3 match tonight,” noted C-I Coach Thea Lowman. “We swept all three Doubles matches, but couldn’t get the Singles point from Andover’s talented singles line-up. Marshall White came close at No. 1 Singles, charging forward in the second set before falling 6-3, 6-4. Overall, I’m proud of how the guys performed and almost upset a solid team.”

Bluejacket Doubles victories were posted by Matt Olson & Calvin Cicha at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1), Sam Renier & Destiny Modina at No. 2 (6-1, 7-5), and Devin Gislason & Josh Fredlund at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2). Andover dropped just three games between the No. 2 and No. 4 Singles matches.

On May 22, top-seed Elk River swept Andover 7-0, and No. 2 seed Forest Lake played Chisago Lakes.

• The Bluejackets (7-7 overall) closed the regular season with a 7-0 win over North Branch May 17. White, Renier, Gislason and Modina swept their Singles matches. Winning at Doubles were Olson & Cicha, Christian Utecht & Fredlund, and Derek Belford & Thomas Phillips.
