The “Loaded Gunn” story line — to save an exhibit of extraordinary superhero clothes from a cadre of villains — is part of a book that reintroduces a group of Marvel’s high-fashion “Models Inc.” comic characters from the 1960s.

“It’s a little `America’s Next Top Model’ — without Tyra (Banks) — and a little `Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,’” says Marvel editor Charlie Beckerman.

The Gunn project evolved on a whim, but it turned out Gunn was a childhood comic fan and a good sport, Beckerman says.

Gunn says the experience has been “the most bizarre thing.”

“It’s exciting and exhilarating, but bizarre. When they came to me, I said, `I’m about to turn 56 years old. Are they crazy?’ But it kept revealing itself in layers and next thing, I’m wearing the `Iron Man’ suit. I was dumbstruck.”

Personally, Gunn says he always fancied himself more of a Batman type, but he’s pleased with the result.

“Most superheroes are fighting the same thing — good vs. evil — but who’s taking on crimes against fashion? Me!”

The biggest offense, hands down: clothes that don’t fit properly, Gunn says. And, if he had the truly incredible power to remove one item from closets all around the world, no question it would be Crocs.

“It’s the No. 1 fashion crime item — and I see it a lot,” Gunn says.

Pinto, fresh off Slumdog Millionaire’s Oscar triumphs, remembered days in front of the TV watching old Hollywood, Grace Kelly in particular. Johansson, the face of Dolce & Gabbana’s debut makeup collection (launching in conjunction with the exhibit), had a local idol in mind. “I’m channeling my inner Monica Vitti,” she said. Gabbana, meanwhile, was spinning gleefully round the receiving line like a kid on prom night.

But, this being Italy, there was also a family feel. All of the Missonis, for instance, were out in force. And Morley Safer, there with a 60 Minutes crew, was an avuncular presence. “It’s all alien,” he mused as he gazed at the oncoming throng of invitees, among them Karl Lagerfeld, a man who has done as much to define extreme beauty as any designer on the face of the planet.

Of course, Safer had to concede there was beauty in the alien. The exhibit’s art director, design legend Jean Nouvel, has suspended each photo in its own space, compelling a new concentration on Newton, Avedon, Meisel, et al. One conclusion was irrevocable: In a couple of centuries, the work of Irving Penn and his sittings editor Phyllis Posnick will be recognized as among the masterpieces de nos jours.

The report is the result of surveying 10,000 people from 20 countries and asking them to rank 50 different cities based on their stylishness (factors include multiculturalism, nightlife and general buzziness).

Rome ranked #5, Los Angeles #6, Tokyo #7, Madrid #8, San Francisco #9, and Barcelona held up the rear.

With West Coast designers pumping fresh new blood into the American fashion scene (not to mention Silicon Valley’s contribution of the iPhone to the world!), we’re happy to see that La La Land and SanFran make the cut.

Asked about the impact of the first Madonna campaign, Arnault said, snapping his fingers for emphasis, “Everything she was wearing in the first campaign was sold within a few months. People came into the store saying, ‘I want the Madonna bag, the Madonna shoes.”

Arnault declined to specify budgets for the fall ads, but said investments would be “flattish” versus last year. “We’re one of the rare brands to have not reduced investments,” he said.

Also slated for the second half is a new campaign devoted to the Tambour watch.
