New Hijri Year Prayers
I like to share this Hijri New Year wishes with you

The year has come to an end,
its sweetness and bitterness
happiness and sorrow

Here comes a new year
Therefore, let’s start a new page for the new year
Don’t look behind, that’s a painful past
Nor at today, for it is present that would bother you
Nor forward, that’s future would brings you insomnia

But look above, there’s the Merciful God

Apologies to all those I did wrong unto, neglected or hurt unconsciously

That’s all for now
Happy New Hijri Year

Exxon & Shell win Iraq oil contract

“The Iraqi Oil Ministry on Thursday said it has awarded a consortium led by Exxon Mobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell PLC the right to develop the West Qurna-1 oil field, representing the first American-led team gaining access to the country’s oil patch.

The pact is the latest in a series of deals Iraq has recently signed or initialed with some of the world’s biggest oil companies. Earlier this week, Iraqi officials completed a final agreement with BP PLC and China National Petroleum Corp. and an initial agreement with a consortium led by Italy’s Eni SpA. U.S. oil company Occidental Petroleum Corp. participated as a junior partner in the Eni-led team.”

Another day at the office, another bloody day in Baghdad

I was working in the clinic as usual when I heard two explosions, with very short interval between them. Well, that’s something normal, no problem…about thirty minutes later the phone of one of my female colleagues rang and it was her husband, he said he miraculously made it, he was in the ministry of justice when the explosions happened “it was something that can be described, it was something that I have never seen before, it’s really disgusting and frightening” as he said, despite that he was a military jet pilot who was in duty through the Iranian war and the gulf war.

That’s when we knew about the terrible disgusting terrorist act that took place in the ministry of justice and Baghdad’s province council because of two explosive trucks… then everybody started calling the people he knows in those ministries and people who live near it…then we heard that one of the physicians’ flat has been totally destroyed and his daughter was in the flat and she was seriously injured…I don’t need to tell you the details as you may have already heard it from any news source you follow and as you have may heard that the most recent number of casualties is 139 and more than 800 injured.

But I need to ask some questions that I can’t find satisfying answers to them, I’ll start with; why the sick politicians are killing the people for their political disagreements? Why are they having the power despite that most of the people knows their crimes? When will the Iraqi people stops bleeding to give the politicians more money! Despite they have enough money that could support them and four generations after them like kings? When will this ever ends? What are the checkpoints doing? Why don’t the government removes all the checkpoints and make our lives much more easier, they are basically not doing anything despite annoying people and causing road jams, they are really doing nothing if such explosions takes place, when will they depend on intelligence? Well, sorry for that because THEY are the ones who did it…and finally one thing I want to know, isn’t it the time that the minister of anterior and the minister of defense gives their resignation.

Now I’ll leave you with a number of photos that speaks much better than words.

Many of you likely first heard of Small World News through our work on Alive in Baghdad, a web series produced by local Iraqi journalists in the midst of the ongoing Iraq conflict. Given all of our recent activity outside Iraq, in Afghanistan, Iran, Honduras, etc. you may be wondering what’s up with the Iraq project.

As I wrote recently, one of our difficulties in the last months has been that our Bureau Chief Omar was in hiding in Syria, due to threats related to his work with Alive in Baghdad. He’s since been relocated to Sweden, leaving us without a full-time coordinator in the region. We are also in the process of rethinking how we move forward with Iraq coverage. As Iraq coverage continues to flag, despite the continuing presence of international forces and violence, it is a priority for us to return to regular coverage as well as analysis from Iraq.

Unfortunately with a flagging budget and recent staff losses, we have to figure out how to do Alive in Baghdad smarter, more effective and with more ease. All along our work on Alive in Baghdad has been very time-intensive. This is one of the difficulties inherent in producing documentary and news video. These difficulties are further exacerbated by the necessity of lengthy translations and coordinating staff across multiple countries and timezones.

We have been examining the integration of other social media and journalism tools within the Alive in Baghdad website. Specifically, with the coming Iraqi parliamentary election in January 2010 we hope to implement a process similar to our recent coverage of the Afghan election. We will crowdsource updates from Iraqis, and others present in Baghdad and around Iraq. We plan on integrating mobile submission as well as semi-realtime content.

We will temporarily shift gears, rather than focusing on a few highly produced videos each month, we hope to begin producing a variety of content, primarily short video clips, but possibly audio discussions, as well as photos, and written analysis, in particular examining events leading up to the elections.

We look forward to your comments and critiques, and welcome suggestions about how we can further involve the audience in our coverage of Iraq. We will also continue to need your support. Although we have a small amount of funds in our bank account, we will not be able to continue sustaining Alive in Baghdad, or build our other projects such as Alive in Afghanistan without your help. If you can support us with a one time donation, please do. If you are able to commit to a recurring amount, it would be a huge help to our work. We are currently investigating options for long-term and sustainable funding, but anything donated via PayPal from our audience will go directly to local producers and will not be subject to overhead costs to run support our American contributors.

Today is the 11th day of Ramadan.. It’s always felt special in Ramadan. Having to fast from sunrise to sunset, reading Quran and praying Taraweeh.. A whole new system and a fixed program for every day. It’s really a refreshment and a restart from the chaotic life.

Since the start of Ramadan, I have been learning to cook! I can’t do anything without the help of the cook book, but I am doing good and that’s what matters. I do get really depressed when things start to go wrong, but when it does go right, it’s worth all the efforts.

The curfew hours in Mosul have changed to 1AM-3AM in Ramadan, and some of the streets are very active at night, which is a very good thing!
***

I’ve started reading a book called Al-Raheeq Al-Makhtoom, it’s a book about the life of the prophet Mohammed (PBUH). It’s very suitable for Ramadan and it’s enjoyable to have all these random info we’ve learned at school read together and start to make much more sense. But it’s a long book, and with all the struggle and hardship the Muslims and the prophet (PBUH) have gone through at the beginning, I’m starting to feel uneasy too!

Today was Baghdad’s bloodiest this year. More than 90 people were killed and over 500 more were wounded in a series of attacks across the city. The deadliest of the attacks took place just outside the building of the foreign ministry. The bomb was so powerful that blast walls were blown off. This particular attack may be more than just an indiscriminate massacre. The location and timing suggest it could be a message from Arab nationalist extremists to Kurdish leaders over Kirkuk and Mosul (or so the perpetrators want it to be seen). This is because the Kurdish-dominated foreign ministry is considered a symbol of Kurds’ presence and influence in Baghdad.

The attacks in general show that terrorist groups in Baghdad can still be lethal. They also indicate that existing plans are not bringing us closer to long-lasting peace and stability.

Baghdad and Washington should take a second look at their strategies and revise whatever needs to be revised. This may be particularly painful for Maliki since it's election season. However, if he wants to be reelected on the premise of the improvements in security during his first term, then his priority should be to do whatever is needed to preserve security.

my family is travelling to Ireland this week because i am participating in a conference. we’re going to turkey after that to meet up with the rest of my family from iraq and the uae. despite our non-iraqi passports we usually get hassled when we travel. we’re usually ‘randomly chosen’ for further searches; sometimes referred to as ‘interogations’. why? (well the blog is titled leish )

where do i start? first, my husband does look like a stereo typical terrorist. he is large, he has a mustache and his hair is black. he is also hairy e.g. one eyeborow running across his forehead. he the most gentle man i have ever met and has trouble sleeping if he punishes one of the boys. we have two boys who take after me, unfortunately. they are dark skinned and curly haired….then there is me, female security gaurds have been known to cut short a conversation with colleagues chase after me to ask me for my passport after i pass through the security check point! thus we are a family representing all shapes, sizes, ages and genders of stereo-typical terrorists. it’s a shame that facts like: my husband and i both have phd in sciences and my children are gifted students is not included in our passports along with where we were born and our pictures.

we arrived in ireland in the morning. just before we landed we were given small form to fill, that’s when my husband and i knew: ireland was our kind of country. they didnt even ask for our passport no. , when we were at the customs desk they looked at our passports, looked at our faces, stamped them and hoped we enjoyed our stay. sigh

strange days indeed…(look up the ‘nobody told me lyrics by john lennon, if you haven’t heard the song).

Iraqi soccer team wins 1st home game in 7 years

By YAHYA BARZANJI

IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — Iraq played its first home soccer game since 2002, defeating Palestine 3-0 in a match that was as much about the nation's struggle for stability as it was about sports.

A sellout crowd of about 25,000 attended the exhibition game at Fransou Hariri Stadium, many waving Iraq and Palestine flags and chanting "Iraq, Iraq."

Some fans sat on the roofs of nearby buildings to catch a glimpse of the game in the capital of a Kurd-ruled region that was safer than many other parts of the country.

Palestine planned to fly to Baghdad for a second game Monday despite a deadly wave of bombings in the capital Thursday.
