Take a screen shot of whatever is on your screen by holding down the power button and the home button for a couple of seconds until there is a white flash.

Tap the screen with 2 fingers while in the Maps App and it will zoom out.

Watch embedded youtube videos in Safari.

If you put your thumb and index finger together and spread them apart on the screen, or have them spread apart and pull in, you can zoom out in either safari, maps, photos.

If you hold down an image with a finger on safari or in an email for a few seconds, you now have the option to save the photo to your camera roll. (new with 2.0)

If you rotate the calculator sideways, it is now scientific (new with 2.0)

If you tap the top of the phone by the clock, it will bring you to the top of the page, say if you are in a pretty long website on safari.

You pretty much have tabs in safari. Just hit the button with the 2 squares.

Mass email delete / move.

Double tap in Safari / Maps to zoom in.

You can watch .mov movies, or listen to .mp3’s, .m4a’s, directly in Safari.

You have an accelerator that helps you use the phone, say you want the phone in landscape, you just tilt it and it goes in landscape. You can also control games like this.

On the iPhone headphones, the little stub thing on the right ear side wire is a microphone. If you pinch it once, it pauses a song / answers a call, and if you double pinch it, it fast forwards songs.

You can have complete access of your phone while on a call. As long as you have WiFi on, or 3G. Just hit the home button while you’re on a call.

Double tapping the home button when you are using your phone brings you to your favorites on your call list.

When you are listening to your music, but you are at the home screen, if you double tap the home button, you can now control iTunes in a little popup.

If you double tap the home button on the slide to unlock screen, you can control iTunes from there.

If you have a MobileMe account, you can upload your photos from the phone directly to the internet.

You have parental controls.

Use a passcode lock, so you have to enter a code every time you use the phone. If your phone gets stolen, no one can get in your phone.

I have been reading reviews and comparisons of the Pre vs iPhone.

The Pre will be released very soon on June 6th and there will be a lot of fanfare made over it. However, I do see a number of shortcomings with the Pre compared to the iPhone. Many of the comparisons made have been with the current iPhone 3G, but I choose to compare the next generation iPhone with its well-expected rumors.

I do admit these positives with the Pre:

the ergonomics and feel of the Pre in the hand

the user interface and capacitive touch and gestures

multitasking ability

responsiveness of web browsing

removable battery

used with several carriers (Sprint/Verizon)

Now for the negatives and these are the deal breaker for me:

physical keyboard which is small and makes typing very difficult (accidently hitting wrong keys, just reported on BoyGenius)

smaller screen, 3.1 vs iPhone 3.5, not good for viewing movies, gaming

8GB compared to iPhone’s 16 and 32GB

sparse software development and apps, Apple is well ahead in this area

no video recording, next gen iPhone will likely have this

camera is 3.0 compared to iPhone’s rumored but likely 3.2

aesthetically not as beautiful as the iPhone, too plastic looking

Palm not as strong a company as Apple, and low on cash

Need for Speed: Undercover, one of EA’s larger iPhone releases for 2009, has gone live at the App Store, and I spent this last weekend embodying an fearless street-racer. Those familiar with 2001’s The Fast and The Furious will identify the plot basics in Need for Speed: Undercover. You are an underground police officer, who is attempting to penetrate the street racing culture to reclaim several crucial stolen cars and/or apprehend people. The narration wasn’t quite fascinating enough for me to pay substantial attention to.

Graphics

EA looked at the Command & Conquer series in NFS: Undercover and chose to utilise live-action cinematics instead of CG. That means cheesy performing seems even more cheesy, but it also means they employed a number of sexy female actresses to scamper around appearing risqué for no good reason. Perhaps that’s the reason I couldn’t stick with the plot.

In-game graphics are more or less good, although I discovered that your car appears much better in the garage than it does on just about all of the courses, depending on the lighting conditions. Perhaps it has something to do with the customized paint job I used on my ride, but it appeared off in virtually all of the races, though perfect in the garage. Otherwise, the in-game courses and vehicles actually look pleasing on the iPhone’s little screen, and there’s no noticeable lag or slowdown, even when you’re driving at top speed or utilizing your nitrous boost.

I’m a huge admirer of impact damage on car models in racing games, and regrettably, NFS: Undercover lacks those. Perhaps it’s a bit much to ask for in an iPhone racing game, though. Different graphic effects, like when you enter slow-down precision maneuvering mode, or while you tear apart an opponents car or come across police cruisers, work considerably well but may turn bothersome if you have to redo a level a multitude of times. An option to switch off at least the cruiser-spotting effects would be a nice addition.

Audio

Sound was hit or miss to some degree, but my experience may not be representative. First, I thought it was strange that there was no music during the introduction/opening. On the other hand, things were functioning fine for cinematics, and so I assumed it was merely an option the developers formed. When there was nothing playing in-game, I began to worry (before you ask, I installed from iTunes and reset before playing, so it should not have been install issues). Eventually, the sound did start working.

When it began to work, I began to regret that it had. The soundtrack is all right, but quite limited, and listening the same songs constantly gets tiring. You can always choose to listen to your own iPhone music, though, making this kind of a non-issue. I believe taking shortcuts with iPhone soundtracks just because it has an integrated music player is a low blow.

Gameplay

NFS: Undercover is very similar to Underground when it pertains to gameplay, and that’s a good thing. You begin with $25,000 and three cars to decide from. When you’ve made your purchase, you begin to race. There are an assortment of types of races, including Battle, Sprint, Hot Car and Takeout, so even players who don’t like the repetition of most racing games shouldn’t find this one excessively redundant.

Winning races gains you money, which you are able to then use to buy new cars, or to equip your current ride with performance and aesthetic upgrades. A new paint job, lowered suspension, gigantic chrome rims, and a lot more is available, with different customised equipment for each car. There’s also dozens of cars to unlock, so you won’t lack for motivation, even when a few of the races are much more challenging than most and have to be replayed again and again. Whenever you get stuck, you can go back and re-run old races to build up your bank and purchase upgrades and/or better cars.

Car control during races is kept simple, which is ideal for the platform. Your engine is going full speed by default, and tapping the screen anywhere will apply your break. Swiping down enters the slowed-down, improved control mode, and swiping up triggers your nitrous. You turn by tilting your phone in either direction, and doing so with a fast jerk will allow you to drift around corners. I find that I never use the slow motion mode, though others might find it convenient. In general, handling is great, and doesn’t feel neither too sensitive or too loose.

Verdict

Despite not actually being interested in the import car racing scene, or racing games in general, I really like Need for Speed: Undercover. It possesses good replay value, plenty of unlockables, and customization that amounts to a leveling system. If you’ve passed on every other racing game for the iPhone and iPod Touch to date, this may be the one to get.

Mecho wars is coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch according to Developer Luc Bernard. This turn-based strategy game is a prequel to Eternity’s Child (PC). This prequel promises to explain why Eternity’s Child, Angel, ended up alone on the devastated planet.

The game features three gameplay modes: Campaign, Tutorial, and Challenge. Mecho Wars contains nine different units for both sides. The soundtrack is being provided by Sean Beeson, the award-winning composer of the Eternity’s Child soundtrack.
