The Clinical Pathology Question bank is an iPhone and iPad app developed by Board Vitals, LLC.

This app is an attractive, easy to use board review app designed for physicians preparing for the clinical pathology boards.

Detailed performance feedback and feedback on why a particular option is the best answer is provided, making it a great way to prepare for the test.

As a hospitalist, I am not able to comment on how applicable the content is for the clinical pathology boards, but the answers are appropriate when compared to UpToDate.

The Clinical Pathology Question Bank costs $29.99.

X-Anatomy™ is a cross-sectional human anatomy and medical imaging atlas developed by Dr. Francis Isidoro for the iOS platform. This application has annotated, zoomable CT images of different body areas (head, chest, pelvis, etc) that are commonly encountered in clinical practice.

X-Anatomy is an excellent point of care resource for non-radiologists that review CT and MRI images. This app is appropriate for medical students, residents, and attending physicians. Advanced practice nurses and students will also find this a useful app.

A particularly useful feature is the ability to select and follow that structure through the other images for that body area. UpToDate looks great on an iPad, and is easier to read with the larger screen.

The ability to search for information on drugs, diagnosis, and treatment at the point of care is essential when providing medical care for complex patients - and this app delivers!

Additionally, UpToDate allows you to earn CME at the rate of 0.5 hours of AMA Category 1 credit per search. Most physicians can earn an entire year's worth of CME with this app alone.

The only downside to this app is the cost of an UpToDate subscription, but when viewed in light of the CME, it is a bargain.

This app is easy to use, and uses the validated Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool to assess the risk of malnutrition in patients.

MNA is easy to use, and has an option to save patient information for later review.

MNA suffers from an uninspiring user interface and a requirement to enter a patient name to start the screening tool.

However, MNA is the only malnutrition screening tool in the iTunes app store at this time.

Malnutrition is a common, though unrecognized problem. Adding MNA to your app collection may help you identify patients at risk of malnutrition.

Most doctors in the survey had an iPhone 4, which is a big change from 2010 when most doctors used a iPhone 3.

iPad use is also growing, now at 15% of physicians.

The full results of the @medicaliphone survey will be included in the soon to be released iHealthcare 2012 report.
