Overall Theme Description:
This is my first theme and is only a beta. The final version will have a complete UI overhaul. This version currently only has a springboard theme.

Why use this theme?
This theme was designed for simplicity in navigation and landscape interface . Having used many summer/winterboards, I've had many ideas of how a theme should be. When Reeco came out with iNAV, it really opened the door for a truly unique iPhone experience.

This theme addresses issues I've had with themes in the past - minimal and clean interface, better organization, issues with forced "categories".

This theme allows the user to have 3 "favorite" apps on the main page, then another page that has 9 more "favorites" (which loads quickly since its just another page), then a link to the category folder containing the remaining apps.

Setting Up iNitsua
Included in each version of the theme is a corresponding SET-UP theme. Turn it on by itself in Winterboard and follow directions.

iPhone Games X-Plane Helicopter

X-Plane itself was hard enough - we're talking a realistic, modelled simulation of flying a real aeroplane. For the plane sim, the main simplification needed (to fit the device) was that there was no rudder control - yet even so it certainly wasn't child's play landing any of the modelled aircraft. Helicopter similarly simplifies things by effectively removing tail rotor control (though you can adjust this for some helis if you really want to) and by automatically linking the 'collective' (the stick that controls how much the rotors bite into the air) to the throttle, a logical connection given that with greater pitch on the collective, you're going to need more power to keep that rotor speed up.

Yet, even with the above help, flying a helicopter turns out to be much trickier than you might think. The four star score here is not a reflection of the fact that the game 'loses' a star but more that you'll enjoy flying less - because it's more like work! As you increase the collective, the helicopter starts to rise, but you'll also need the main rotors pointing straight up (by default, they're pointed forwards when your iPhone is in typical gameplaying attitude), otherwise you'll simply bury the helicopter in the ground. So you have to lean back as you rise, then start to push forwards at the right moment. It takes quite a bit of skill to simply take off and land again, let alone flying from A to B or enjoying the scenery.

But you'll have some interest in helicopters, otherwise you wouldn't be looking at this title, so I'm hoping the difficulty won't frighten you too much. Which is good, because there's an awful lot you can fiddle with here in order to get the most from it and simulate just what you want to. You can choose to fly the tiny Robinson R-22, the Bell 206, the mighty Blackhawk or the heavy lifter Sea King. Each is not a set of graphics, it's a full 3D model and flies as the real thing would. So, for example, the R-22 will zip about and be easier for beginners, while the lumbering Sea King will require forward planning in your stick movements if you're to keep a dozen tons of steel from crashing to earth with a bang. Like X-Plane 9, crashing (thankfully) isn't a major disaster. There are no explosions and noone gets killed. Which is just as well.

Graphics throughout are impressive, with lightning fast frame rates and super 3D view of the virtual world, from both inside and outside the helicopter, and from different angles. For real heli enthusiasts, you can fiddle with the payloads of each helicopter, to simulate it being empty or full, etc. Plus, of course, the usual X-Plane options to set different cloud bases, different times of day, different wind speeds, directions and degrees of turbulence. Particularly welcome is the ability to calibrate the iPhone's accelerometer control, so that stick center corresponds to the angle at which you hold YOUR device.

X-Plane's developer has proved faithful with updates and I'm sure there are more helicopters planned, with more scenery (though the Grand Canyon landscape provided is pretty impressive!) One to buy and return to whenever you feel the need to battle with the mechanics of helicopter flight!

iPhone SplashID Applications

Now there are plenty of so-called secure database utilities. Applications that let you enter data and encrypt it from others. So far so good. But are you really going to sit there typing ALL your private information into your phone? I thought not. For an average user, with hundreds of private entries, the only practical solution is to enter the data in the first place over on your desktop PC or Mac, either by typing on your full sized keyboard, by pasting text in from other sources, or by direct import from another desktop database system. And here comes the crunch. You now need to sync this all over to your iPhone or iPod Touch.

This is the point where most secure utilities fall down - they exist only on the phone. Or only on the desktop. But SplashID scores heavily by existing on both, and with a foolproof 'sync over Wi-Fi' feature. Of course, you can still enter new entries or amend existing ones on the phone - all changes get synced seamlessly over to the desktop version on your next sync. Kicking off such a sync is as easy as tapping on its front screen icon. It's immediate too, as your desktop is scanned for, found via Wi-Fi and data from the Desktop version of SplashID used to sync with.

Sticking to the iPhone style guide, only four functions are on the main SplashID toolbar, with SplashData deciding to hide everything else behind a 'Tools' button - this makes sense and you shouldn't need to delve into this part of the interface very often. The standard toolbar offers Search, Add, Lock and Sync, certainly the four things you'll use most often.

Adding entries is easy enough, once you get your head around the confusion of nomenclature: fields, categories and types. All you really need to tap on is the 'Type' line, giving you the choice of a dozen or so predefined templates, e.g. Bank accounts, Credit cards, Serial numbers and Web logins. Having chosen a type for your entry, many of the fields then get labelled accordingly, e.g. username, password for a 'Web login' entry. Freeform entries are possible, as are new templates/types and you can also set up categories, for grouping entries together in another way, e.g. "Steve's" or "Wife's" or "Business" or "ABC Club".

The flexibility is astonishing, considering the squeezing of SplashID's code into the simplified iPhone interface. The price to be paid is that occasionally things get confusing, but, having input a handful of new entries, you should soon get the hang of what goes where.

The big question is: should you get the Desktop application free when you buy the iPhone version? I'd argue yes, but the multi-platform nature of SplashID Desktop has meant that the developers disagree, wanting an extra fee for this. However, at least there's a 30 day trial version so you can check it out in real life - my guess is that once you see the value of having your most private data fully secured on both phone and desktop, you'll consider the price of the Desktop version money very well spent.
