Writing: What is your why?

I have just returned from 9 days holiday in the Languedoc area of the South of France with my husband. It's an area famous for its Cathar castles, as well as its wine, of which I may have drunk a fair bit! The Cathars were a religious sect, Christians who were persecuted by the Catholic church and wiped out for their different beliefs. I studied them as part of my theology degree so it was fascinating to be there. It was also a good time for reflection.

My big 'aha' moment was this:
My job is create a body of work that I am proud of and that resonates with people.

That's it. Anything that stops me moving towards this goal needs to be evaluated. This is going to be guiding what I do going forward.

There is one site I recommend over and over again and that is TheBookDesigner.com. Joel Friedlander is the most knowledgable person I know about everything to do with self-publishing and he shares so much of it freely on his blog.

Joel has just launched The Self-Publishing Roadmap which includes everything you need to know about self-publishing in one super course. It is only for those people who are taking this seriously as a business because there is an investment of time and money. If you want to be proud of your finished products, then this will give you the tools to make it happen. It will help you create that quality body of work.

It's a multi-media course with video, audio and PDF resources as well as a stack of valuable bonuses. The course is open now for a short time and then closes to new participants.

Amazon algorithm update

I was fascinated to read this article about how Amazon has changed its recommendation algorithms in the last few months. We can never know exactly how things work but author Edward W Robertson has done a lot of the hard work. Click here to read the whole article

The conclusions: Free books AND books under $2.99 are not getting the same weighting in terms of ranking as they used to do. So what worked in January with KDP Select no longer brings the sales after the promo period. Presumably the aim is to stop the free and cheap books dominating the charts.

New Ebook Cover Image Requirements Coming to Satisfy Higher Resolution E-Reading Devices

Heads up. Effective on or about July 15, Smashwords will begin requiring higher pixel counts on ebook cover images.

Why the change? Starting in August, Apple will require that all new ebook cover images be at least 1,400 pixels wide. Their previous minimum was 600 pixels.

Since Smashwords requires vertical rectangle (height greater than width) images, a new recommended ebook cover might be around 1,600 pixels wide by 2,400 pixels tall. Why 2,400? 2,400 is 1.5 times 1,600. Pull out a ruler and measure just about any print book and you'll get a ratio close to that. Most good-looking covers have heights that range from approximately 1.3 to 1.6 times your width. Amazon recommends a 1.6 width/height ratio, and their recommended height is 2,500 pixels. As you can see, there's flexibility here for personal preference whether you prefer wide or long. The image above left shows what a 1.5 ratio looks like. The height is 50% greater than the width.

Why is Apple requiring higher pixel counts? Most likely, it's because they want to provide ebook customers better covers for their current and future higher resolution iPads, iPhones and MacBooks. Since we think the Apple and Amazon guidelines are reasonable (they help readers with next-generation screens enjoy your covers in all their glory), we'll adopt Apple's requirements as our new minimum standards for cover images.

What happens next?
Apple's new requirement applies to new ebooks, and new cover updates. If your book is already in the Apple iBookstore with a smaller cover image, you're grandfathered in, UNLESS you try to update your cover image in the future, in which case they'll reject it. To help you get ahead of this change, Smashwords will make the 1,400 pixel minimum a Premium Catalog requirement starting on or around July 15. Like Apple, we'll apply the standard to new titles and cover image updates. If we previously shipped your smaller cover to retailers, we won't require the new cover image size unless you update your cover image or republish a previously unpublished book. The minimum dimensions do not apply to the images or cover image inside your .epub file.

The Smashwords FAQ is now updated to reflect the new recommendations and requirements. I'll update the Smashwords Style Guide in the next day or two so one month from now this won't come as a surprise to people.

How NOT to create a new cover image
Don't use a photo or image editing program to enlarge your current image. That will cause pixelation (blur).

How to create your cover image
You'll find some tips in the Smashwords FAQ, though my best recommendation is to hire a professional. Unless you're a professional graphic artist, it's best to hire a cover image designer. Send an email to list@smashwords.com to obtain my list of low cost cover designers and ebook formatters (they're all freelancers, we don't receive a commission or referral fee). Their rates range from about $40 to $100, a range I consider very reasonable. Most have online portfolios so you can see if their style matches what you're looking for. If they don't match what you want, post a note at the Smashwords Facebook page to ask your fellow authors for references. There are many great cover designers out there, and most are very affordable. There's a lot to learn about book marketing, and not nearly enough time to both learn and implement what we discover. That's why I'm always looking for ways to take advantage of professional development opportunities while doing something else - my version of a two-fer.

I've been driving to my Mom's house two hours away quite a bit lately doing some of that "trying to keep her in her house because that's what she wants" caregiving that so many of us here are familiar with. When I'm on the road, I listen to educational audio recordings that I get through iTunes or professional organizations I'm a member of, including the Association of Ghostwriters founded by my pal and goal buddy Marcia Turner.

I'm particularly excited about an upcoming opportunity to learn, and not just because I participated in the event earlier this week as a speaker about virtual book tours in the book marketing track. The Digital Publishing Virtual Summit that started June 12 is a two-week, no-charge way to learn more about how to create, publish, and sell your book (or another digital product). I'm planning on listening in live to the presentations or downloading them for my next road trip or evening walk. With speakers like Joel Friedlander and Roger Parker, I know I'll learn a lot! Pinterest for Authors: How to Promote Your Writing on the Fastest Growing Website Ever

Pinterest - isn't that a website for travel planners, lovers of delectables, and vintage-clothing aficionados? Well, yes; but many authors are finding creative ways to promote their books using the social scrapbooking site, too.

10.4 million people currently use Pinterest, and that figure is climbing fast; some data shows that Pinterest is the fastest growing standalone website ever.

So what, exactly, is Pinterest?

Pinterest is a combination of a digital pin-up board and a scrapbook. It's a bit like Twitter, only for pictures and videos instead of 140-character tweets. From your Pinterest page you can create different boards for different interests - one for book covers, one for photos of characters in your book, one for pictures of you and your readers, one for photos of your writing desk, etc. Plus, other people can pin things to your page (if you allow them to become "contributors" to a particular board), which encourages more sharing and interaction.

How can authors use Pinterest as a promotional tool?

Well, if you've spent much time on social networks, you know that shouting "Buy my book!" every couple days is a sure way to annoy your followers. You have to be more subtle, more sideways, more creative. Pinterest is a great way to enhance your author "brand," build your platform, and create compelling content that supports your book promotion efforts. And since Pinterest users can create unlimited "boards" for each new interest or topic, you've got options.

Here are a few ideas:

Create a Pinterest board for the main characters or settings in your book. Ask your fans to add photos they think help make those people and places feel real. What does the mysterious hero look like? What about pictures of that icy field where the murder took place? (Note: You'll have to add these fans individually as "contributors" to that particular board before they can pin their own content to it).
Give us a behind the scenes glimpse into your process. Show fans your desk, your typewriter or computer, your waste basket of discarded poems, the view outside your window, etc.
Get aspirational. Where do you want to travel on your book tour? Where would you love to spend a week writing? Show us the photos! One great example of this is author Priscilla Warner's Pinterest page. She has a board called "My Dream Writing Studios." Amazing photos.
Ask for inspiration. You can create boards to bring your previously created characters into 2D. But the process can flow the opposite direction, too. What about asking your readers for help when you're just developing a new story? Are you searching for the right details about pistols to put into your western? Ask for some photos of old guns.
Promote your friends and heroes. Social media followers are turned off by constant self-promotion, but pimping books by other folks can go a long way. You're giving solid recommendations to your fans, and the writers you promote will be thankful.

Here are some basic rules for using Pinterest. If you've been using Facebook or Twitter for a while, the same general guidelines apply.

Stay engaged in the conversation. Don't just post your own content and call it good. You need to re-pin, like, and comment on other people's Pinterest content. Follow the Pinterest boards of writers you admire.
Put the "P" symbol on your site or blog so your readers will know they can also follow you on Pinterest.
Make sure the names of your boards have catchy titles.
Large photos are best. Pinterest is all about the visual. Pick great pics.

Now that the Facebook changes have gone into effect, let's take a look at how you can maximize the "new" Facebook Pages. Back with us again is Amy Porterfield who will step us through some of the creative ways to boost your exposure and your page on Facebook.

Amy, now that we know we can use these fun applications, what are some marketing tips that folks can use to make the most of these?
Well, you can and should rename your applications. When you do, make sure there's a clear call to action, especially since the default welcome tabs have gone away, you can really use these to maximize your impact and get folks to sign up or whatever it is that you want them to do. You can also move these applications around.

So, how do you upload a custom thumbnail?
The first thing you want to do is collapse all of your applications so they all show up. And then, hover over the right corner of any of your applications and you'll get that little edit pencil that popped up when you moved the boxes around. Next, you'll get the drop down and you want to click on Edit Settings. Once you click on Edit Settings a box will pop-up here and you can add or remove the application, you can change the thumbnail image and you can name your application; like I said, put in a really good call to action - Enroll Now, Sign Up Here, Listen, or Watch or whatever you want to do.

How else can users customize their Fan Pages?
In the old layout we were able to use a default landing tab. Many of us used it as a default welcome tab where all non-fans would land before landing on our Wall. Now this option is gone. You can no longer set a default landing tab. However, the good news is that each custom app has its own unique URL so you can take that URL and then drive traffic from outside of Facebook into Facebook with that custom URL so they actually land on the tab you want them to land on.

Another way that I drive traffic to my applications is by designing a timeline cover image that draws the eye down to a specific custom app. For example, I used my Timeline cover to draw attention to a "Webinars" custom app. If someone clicks on my "Webinars" app what they'll see is an opt-in opportunity to sign up for my upcoming webinar. So it is essentially a lead generating opportunity.

Here's what's cool, in this instance I used a tool called Lujure and this tool allows you to pull in a web page outside of Facebook and have that function inside your custom tab on Facebook: http://www.amyporterfield.com/tool

So, other than the new Timeline cover image and no default landing tab, what else has changed? What are some tips for increasing Fan engagement?
With the new Pages rollout - first impressions really matter! The goal is to get people coming back for more. Having an impeccably branded Facebook page is important; it's got to look good in order to attract people's attention. That's where your cover image comes into play. Also, on your Wall, I encourage you to use more eye-catching images and video. Video especially is a great way to build authority and build a stronger relationship with your fans.

Tell us about some of the new features for building fan engagement?
There are some exciting new features, let me explain. First of all, there's something called Recent Posts by Others that is now on your new timeline. When someone writes on your wall or tags your page, posts are not always prominently displayed on your wall. It's really weird how they've done it now. Posts by others are actually grouped together. You want to go out of your way to make sure you answer any questions they have and respond to their comments. Remember to make it a habit to reach out to those who have commented on your page.

In addition to encouraging more engagement on your Facebook page, there are two really cool things that you can do with posts now. If you wanted to really draw attention to a post, what you could do is hover over the right corner of a post and you'll see a star and a little pencil. The little pencil is to edit the post; the star is to highlight it. Click that star and what happens is the post expands across the timeline. Instead of it being in one of the columns it takes up both columns. Now when people are scanning down your timeline that post that will stand out more than the other posts. This is a great thing to do with just a select few posts that you want to draw attention to and highlight.

The only problem with this is that as soon as you put up a new post, it will be pushed down on your wall. One way to keep a post at the top is to pin it. Pinned posts have a small, yellow ribbon in the right corner of the post - that's how you know it's pinned to the top of a Facebook Wall. Pinned posts allow you to feature your most important content at the very top of your wall. When you pin a post, it will stay there for 7 days and then Facebook will automatically unpin it.

Here are five quick Timeline strategies:
1) Make sure you create calls-to-action with your thumbnails and name your applications with strong words that encourage your fans to click on them, such as: Enroll, Watch Now, and Sign Up Here.
2) Be strategic with the three apps across the top - remember any Facebook page you go to, you'll see the Photos application and then three boxes next to it. Be strategic with those three applications because those are the ones that everyone will always see.
3) Make a mindset shift - start focusing on quality interactions, more engagement, more lead opportunities versus more likes.
4) Make your Timeline visually appealing (while invoking real action)! Choose words and graphics that will get your fans to pay attention.
5) Bonus Tip! Use Facebook Ads to drive traffic to your applications. Facebook ads can be very inexpensive and get you huge results when you experiment with them enough to really understand how they can work for your business.

How to Use Milestones
Milestones are basically Facebook's way of allowing us to highlight different important dates in our business. We have this on our profile, as well - where you can do a Milestone; let's say you had a baby, attended a class reunion, graduated college or something very significant has occurred; those are considered your personal Milestones. For your business though it might be a grand opening, notifying your customers when you earned your first dollar, or perhaps hosting a special event; things like that are Milestones in your business. You might want to list when something has been developed, all that good stuff!

What I love about this is if you're going to do a Milestone, make sure that you really take advantage of it. A Milestone appears across the page just like a highlighted image. See I've got the two columns below this but a Milestone stretches across the page, it is always there, it always stays stretched out across the page and it's a great way to allow people to understand how they can do business with you; what products you offer, types of services and how they can find out more about you. Take advantage of these Milestones whenever you have an opportunity to do so because they really allow you to get more exposure.

Getting More From The 'About' Section
Speaking of more engagement, I want you to optimize your About section. First let me go to that section so you know exactly what I'm talking about and then I'll come back here. Here we are on my Facebook page and the About section I'm referring to is right here. Where it says: Product/Service - Check out my latest training program FBinfluence with the link to it. That's the About section that everybody will have on their Facebook page.
There are a few things to take advantage of in this space. First, know that it varies by category, meaning I'm featuring a product or service but if you are a local business then your business will actually be the default and have information pulled in there for you; the name of your business, your location and your telephone number. If you want to get your website in there you have to delete the telephone number and then it will pull in the website. Just know for a local business it's a little different. For most everybody else, you'll get to type in the About section what you want placed there. When you do that you want to stay around 165 characters so nothing gets cut off. When it gets cut off then your hot link address won't work.
Let me give you some examples: First off, you want to remember to make it a call to action. Use that About section if you can as a way to call action to something specific. For me, I said: "Check out my latest training program, FBinfluence" with the link to it. Another thing is you can just explain what your company does re: Full service digital agency helping businesses evolve in the digital world - with a link to your website.

Should You Take a Creative Writing Course?

Most authors exploring a book marketing website won't be thinking about the merits of a creative writing course. Aren't you beyond all that? If your book is in its tenth draft, if you've got your cover design chosen, your blurb written, your marketing under development - aren't you beyond learning the ABCs of writing?

Well, maybe. I used to think so. I should say that I'm a working writer myself. I've been published by HarperCollins, Random House, Bloomsbury and others. I've had novels become bestsellers and others make prize-shortlists. I've been published most places that matter between Japan and New York - so I've been around the block. I'm not a newbie any more.

But the notion of a creative writing course isn't so foolish, all the same. For one thing, most writers just charge in to their first novel. I did. Bash your first draft out on a laptop convinced you're Dan Brown / Stephen King / Nora Roberts / Jonathan Franzen. Mess around with it, trying to get the darn thing into some kind of shape. Send it off to a literary agent. Hope you get lucky. (And I did.)

Yet somewhere along the way, you realise that although you might have got one published, you never actually learned how to write a novel. Your first book worked, if it did, through inspiration, but that rush of creativity won't always be there. And one day - quite likely some day soon - you'll run into a creative problem that you don't know how to solve.

At that point, you need technique. You actually need to know the ABCs of writing. If a plot isn't quite working out, you need a set of tools that will help you analyse the problem, identify the core issue and fix it. Sure, inspiration is an indispensible ingredient of any great writing, but technique is there to support, not replace, that original creative impulse.

Or take another issue: prose style. I'll bet that you still write today in more or less the same way as you did when you first picked up a pen. You'll have tightened up, got better at avoiding cliché, been more economical with your words - but I'll bet you still sound the same. That might be because you just happened on a great style when you first started writing. Or it might be because you cling, like a limpet to a rock, to the very first thing you got to work. You want to guess which of those two options is the more common?

And those really are the two reasons why existing writers might want to think about learning, from scratch, how to write a novel. You do it to build technique, to give you a set of tools that will halve the time it takes you to get your work right. Measured out over, quite possibly, an entire career of writing, that saving of effort could be enormous.

And the second reason is that a course offers you a 'safe play' area. You can try stuff on a course you wouldn't have the nerve to do for real. Try different styles. Push yourself. Experiment. Imitate. Mix things up. You wouldn't want to start a whole novel like that, but if you scribble out a short story on a course that really excites you - well, that excitement could possibly be the start of something big.

In terms of which course to pick, I'm a massive fan of online writing courses. They slot into your ordinary life and your ordinary working rhythms without having to disrupt a thing. If you need plenty of time for a particular exercise, working online will give you more freedom to take that time than you'd have if you were sat in a classroom. And naturally, the quality of a writing course depends a lot on its students. If a class fills its places by choosing from a narrow geographic location, you're at risk of not being sufficiently challenged and extended by those you're with.

Like countless authors, I've ended up running my career backwards. Launching myself with my first novel, taking time to figure out that I didn't know what I was doing, picking stuff up piecemeal along the way. And life doesn't have to be like that. You could actually choose to do things in the right order. Get your skills, launch your career, build from there. It's funny how much simpler that would be.

Fellowship for Social Media Artists

Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts (VCCA) is offering two fully funded, six-week fellowships for artists who are using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube. The fellowships are for artists who are exploring ways to seamlessly integrate the social media platform into the work itself, thus finding new and compelling ways to use social media as a tool of self-expression. The fellowships are accompanied by a $2,000 stipend.

Craig Pleasants, VCCA Program Director says, "the artists selected for these fellowships will be working in ways that move art from the gallery or museum to the web, seeking ways to free art from geographical and temporal constraints. We are not defining social media artwork for this fellowship, leaving that to the artists who are pioneering this field, but the finished work must be presented on the web and be fully accessible to the netverse. We expect that the successful work will be tied to the logic of social media as well as being conceptually rich."

This opportunity is for artists who have not previously been in residence at VCCA. Residencies must take place between October 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013.

As a book coach, I receive quite a few questions from my clients, blog readers, and social media followers. I decided to put together a list of some of the most common questions I receive about writing, publishing, and marketing non fiction books and ebooks.

Q. Do I need my own book selling website?

A. Yes!

One new client asked this question. Her Amazon sales so low, as were her own site's sales, that she realized she needed to create a new URL for her Romance Book website, using the title as part of the name of the site.

Also, her new site would have the advantage of collecting her unique visitors' emails (opt-ins) so she can stay in touch and promote on a regular schedule such as 1X every two weeks.

Your audience will appreciate your free samples and keep listening to you.

With the constant addition of fresh material, you make the search engines happy with your site. With our email list of website subscribers, we are able to let my audience know about upcoming teleseminars and book coaching opportunities as well as special new information they want. We built my list of 3000 opt-in into over 6000 which makes great opportunities for other sales.

Q. What is the best way to go about getting my work copyrighted?

I have heard several stories. One story is that all I have to do is draw a C and put a circle around it. Another story is that I have to go to a lawyer.

Please tell me the real story.

A. It's not enough to put a copyright sign on the page.

You also need to use the word "Copyright," because some countries don t recognize the "C" symbol. If you want to do even more, send a copy of your manuscript to the copyright office in Washington, DC. It costs under $50 and protects you if you ever have to go to court.

Q. What's a Great title and what's a Bad title for an ebook?

A. A good title is one that connects with your potential buyers.

It does so on an emotional level and gets them to take the next step and look at the table of contents and/or purchase the ebook.

A bad title is one that doesn't convey what the ebook is about. It can also be just plain dull-sounding like a textbook. Or it can use words that are hard for people to connect to, pronounce, or understand.

Q. How do I know if my book is significant enough, if people will need it?

A. Use my significance test!

Over the years perfectly competent people with unique information to share in a book have come to me, so afraid their book isn't good enough, their peers will judge it as poor, or they won't be able to get it out to their audience.
You can test your book's significance by asking these questions…

    Is it filled with action if fiction? Is it exciting?
    Is it fun to read? Have humor?
    Does it teach the readers something new or interesting? (educate)
    Does it present useful, original and unique information?
    Does it have potential to positively affect the reader's life?
    Is the message said in a unique way? Does it brand you or your business?
    Does it answer an age-old question such as the meaning of life?
    Does it create a deeper understanding of human nature?
    Does it give skills and information to help individuals?
    Will the particular audience want or need its information?

Of these 10 significance tests, it takes only…

    One for an article or blog post.
    Two for a book.
    Three for a top seller.
    Five for a Pulitzer Prize.
    Six for a literary classic.

These are just some ways for you to build your confidence and courage to share your word with the world. So be encouraged and start writing!
