Halloween Decorating Ideas – Quick Easy Last Minute Tips for getting Spooky

Halloween has got to be one of our most interesting holidays! It is full of mystery, legends and a deep fascination with the unknown. With elements of surprise and unpredictability all add up to one of the most celebrated and decorated holidays by both adults and children alike. If you’re one to host a Halloween party, decorate the front entry for trick or treaters or simply for your own personal enjoyment, I’ve listed some tips and Halloween decorating ideas to get you thinking outside the pumpkin!

First start by thinking about how you would normally decorate for Halloween and how you could take it to the next level, put a spin on it, or add that element for that wow factor. It’s not always how much you do either, no need to go overboard keep the basic principles of design in mind within your composition:
• Balance -the arrangement of elements to achieve equilibrium.
• Harmony -the arrangement of elements to each other as a whole to achieve unity.
• Rhythm -the repetition of elements in a regular pattern.
• Emphasis -enhancing elements by creating hierarchies, focus, importance or element features.
• Contrast -using variety, subtle or extreme, to create importance and interest in a composition.
• Proportion -the relationship of scale between elements within a space to one another.

Jack o-lanterns – what would Halloween be without one? Put a spin on it…set it upon a pedestal urn, maybe surrounded with some fall branches, fall garland or set upon some autumn leaves. Carving Tip: Apply Vaseline on your cuts, it keeps the pumpkin fresh longer! Another display alternative is stacking 2 or 3 tiered pumpkins in different sizes and shapes. Use your pumpkins after Halloween! They make great planters or as a vase for say a fall arrangement.

Dead Branches – They make a simple inexpensive base element to build upon. Cobwebs work wonderfully stretched across them, perched ravens or black crows create a creepy, eerie theme with them.

Lining the walk way – Use some Halloween lights or easily create your own with a strand of lights and some plastic pumpkin handled buckets. Tip: Cut a hole in the bottom for the lights to go through and line your pathway with them. Flame resistant luminary bags are also fun, easy, and inexpensive. Tombstones and police tape are fun too.

Cobwebs – Cobweb everything! Spider webs are cost effective decorations and they just give people the creeps.

Eerie Lighting – Black Lights: Add some into the mix and those spider webs just mentioned will pop and glow along with anything else florescent in color. Tip: Reduce costs and buy standard florescent fixture housings from the hardware store. Flickering flame light bulbs are super fun too and one of those little details that get you that wow effect. They are great in the porch lights, lamp posts, or in chandeliers!

Chandeliers –Great for hanging bats from or spiders, a spooky Halloween Witch, eerie Halloween Ghost, ugly dried apple heads. Tip: Choose one item for emphasis and stick with it such as the bats.

Jars – Printed labels are always fun but you can take it to the next level and create a spooky science lab setting easily! Fill some jars in various sizes and shapes with colored water, fake eyeballs, teeth or spiders. Decorating Tip: Fill them after Halloween with mini pumpkins and gourds for a fall display.

Silhouettes – buy them or make your own, either way they are inexpensive and work great in windows worked into a display or as back drops on mirrors. A theme of Black Cat Silhouette or Witch Silhouettes in the windows is spooktacular!

Lastly, always keep your eyes peeled around town, in stores, at haunted houses and around the neighborhood for new ideas and unique Halloween displays. Use those ideas and incorporate them into your own spooky décor. These were just a few ideas to get you started in the right direction, there is an abundance of resources out there for halloween props and displays so have fun!

Fall Decorating Ideas

Is It Fall Yet or What here in South Florida? With September 22nd being the first day of fall I anxiously await that first drop in humidity and hope for a cool blast. I imagine that the dead leaves on my house plants are those of fall leaves, and the winds of the passing storms along with the kids getting back to school are all indications of summers end and the first signs of autumn. First stop is the closet to dig out that sweater or two with the excitement that I might to get to wear one of them soon! Now although we may not really get to integrate much of the fashion trends for fall for ourselves down here in the pan handle state we certainly can induce the change of seasons with some fall decorating for our homes.

It truly is a favorite time of year of mine. I personally love the autumn color palette with its burnt oranges, yellows, raw and burnt sienna’s, crème brûlée, dusty purples and pops of warm olive greens. In the store we of course go crazy with it all and geared more towards Halloween. However we start with the fall palette as our base and actually integrate a lot of items right into Thanksgiving and on into Christmas décor and displays.

If you start of right you can the same in your home and use the fall as a base to build upon right on into the Christmas season. Silks and artificial foliage are especially are great for this by choosing more multi seasonal items say like fall harvest sprays and picks with the ambers, browns, gold’s, warm oranges, deep reds. They work beautifully with in an arrangement of say pumpkins and acorn squash in a fall display for both Halloween and Thanksgiving. As you switch gears for Christmas simply change out the pumpkins and replace with for example some red berry sprays, snow pine branches, maybe a poinsettia pick and say a dash or two of glittered ornaments and you’re good to go.

The key is selecting foliage from the beginning with a range of colors and not strong in one color for example a vibrant orange that only works for Halloween and not so much into thanksgiving. Stick with a warmer range with ambers, burnt oranges, and deep reds. Each of the colors will pop more or less depending on what you put with them. With an orange pumpkin and yellow squash the burnt oranges and golden ambers will come forward in the arrangement, when you add in the reds and gold’s for Christmas lets say those colors will come forward and the others will recede yet still end up enhancing your arrangement. Fall foliage also easily incorporates into just about any holiday display. It can be mixed into a Christmas tree for a dash of color or simply peaking out from behind a figurine or table piece on a buffet, mantel or dining table. Get the multi uses of it rather then packing it up!
Decorating for the seasons should be fun and doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking. If your dreading it, try to look at from a different perspective this year, start now and do it a little at a time, it may seem early but its really not. Its great for the mind too especially here in South Florida where don’t get to experience that incredible change of season with the changing of the leaves and so forth that naturally occurs up north. So start with a simple arrangement of fall leaves and pumpkins and say maybe a small vignette on a mantel or cocktail table and then another and so forth.

Its said to be ideal and often a surprisingly sophisticated color for interiors when used in the right areas and proportions as well as on accent pieces to create a focal point. It appeals to both sexes, adults, and children as well due to its high visibility, uplifting nature and friendliness that tends to draw us in.

Love is in the air and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner so why not adorn your home with some quick touches in celebration of this fun and romantic holiday!

It’s not just for lovers so whether you’re in love or seeking it, Valentine’s Day is a great time to bring some romance and love into your home. What a better time to share and spread some love around yourself and those you cherish.

With a few simple touches here and there you will be well on your way! Here are a few great ideas that are quick, simple, and can be easily accomplished to adorn your home in time for Valentine’s. After all it is one of the most romantic days of the year!

If you have Kids or Grandchildren in town…Wahoo! That’s an excuse in itself to go all out. Incorporate fun details and bright colors like red and hot pinks along with touches of contrasting pastels. Perhaps toss in some heart shaped throw pillows or valentine themed stuffed animals on the beds. If they enjoy the arts and crafts have them cut out and decorate some hearts, X and O shapes, or get a stack of some packaged hearts. They’re great and fun to spread around and hang in their room. String them together to hang across their headboard or from a ceiling fan, windows, mirrors. They’re fun to place just about anywhere and brighten any child’s imagination and their room.

Step it up with more refined and elegant decorating touches for older kids, or homes with no kids,and the areas for yourself and a loved one.Some red and white hand towels with hearts in the bathroom and a few coordinating dish towels in the kitchen.Group some framed photos on the bedroom dresser, a side table, mantel or even the dining table…clustered with some lit candles, placed upon some rose petals or surrounded by some flower buds. A mirrored vanity tray also works great and any candles will do, the don’t have to be heart shaped and in the traditional red, pinks and whites. We have them though if you do want to go all out though.

Romantic and intimate dining settings are always fun! It’s all in the little details you add whether you creating a casual, whimsical, or fully decked out elegant setting. Take the time to add some simple personal touches to the setting. It can be something as simple as taking some red ribbon and wrapping them around the middle or base of candles you may already have on the table. For myself, I get excited creating a candle bouquet for my centerpiece this season using a footed glass hurricane vase with about 7 to 9 drip less pearled white flat bottomed tapers tied together with sheer red and pinked laced ribbons. They could also be set in sand in a bowl or vase. (Remembering to keep the ribbon well away from the flames and of course never leaving the burning candles unattended).

Another nice simple detail for your loved one or guest are small gifts placed upon the china setting. The wrapped gift not only looks stunning but when embellished with some ribbon and a personalized card makes it even that much more special for your guests.For the gift inside the box, it can be a small personalized message, candies…and better yet jewelry!

A package of valentine’s cards can take use as place cards as a quick and simple touch that enhances any setting. These are just a few ideas to get you on your way…once you start your creativity will take its own course and before you know it Love will be in the air.
