Organisations, both in the public and private sectors, are only now realising the potential benefits of using information effectively within their organisation. This is, in part, driven by a growing need to base decisions on up-to-the-minute data, and a dramatic increase in the volumes of decisions they are having to make and all this when they are seeing volumes of information requiring to be stored. Those organisations that have successfully maintained these dynamics, what Capgemini terms an Intelligent Enterprise, are reaping the benefits of significant organisation wide improvements.

Too much data but not enough information? Learn how to become an “Intelligent Enterprise” which harnesses its data for comparative and/or competitive advantage.Too many people in organisations are holding up their hands and saying, “We are getting it wrong. We’ve got too much data, but not enough information,” this is despite investing millions of pounds in technology and solutions to create, manage and store business data.

However, there are organisations who have successfully harnessed their data for comparative and/or competitive advantage and we refer to these as Intelligent Enterprises. These organisations, typically leaders in their market segments have completed a transformational journey through which they have made significant changes to their culture, processes, information landscape and technology platforms. This point of view investigates the challenge organisations face and the journey that needs to be mapped out for the significant benefits of an Intelligent Enterprise to be realised.

The Intelligent Enterprise

Intelligent Enterprises are organizations who have successfully harnessed their data for comparative and/or competitive advantage. These organizations, typically leaders in their market segments, are those that can beat their competitors through better insight about themselves, their customers, their market, and their competition.

To reach this pinnacle , they have completed a transformational journey through which they have made significant changes to their culture processes, information landscape and technology platforms.

To help organizations on this transformational journey, we have developed a four-stage model which defines levels of maturity through which organizations will need to sequentially progress:

Data - organizations at this level focus on data gathering but not on data analysis. Data is fragmented across processes and systems. Organizations may have sophisticated CRM and ERP systems in place, but will struggle to easily identify their customers, the true return on a new advertising campaign, etc.

Information - the organization and use of data is controlled. Organizations at this level have control and visibility of the data that is available in the organization and are able to confidently make decisions based on that data.

Insight - data is used to generate insight and value and the organization, is able to proactively respond to changes. Organizations at this level don’t suffer from excessive data instead they have developed insight that gives them focus on key and relevant pieces of data. They are exploiting data by embedding into core business processes.

Intelligence - the organization is able to bring consistently and easily together a wide variety of data and use that data to drive both operational and strategic change. Organizations at this level will be Information-centric companies that have learned to decide on their information needs before any IT transformation takes place. They understand what information, people and processes are required to deliver strategic objectives or to add value to the organization.

Today’s organizations are exposed to a turbulent environment that is characterized by changing regulatory demands, increasing globalization, and ever changing customer demands.

Also, during the last couple of decades the balance in the organizations population shifted from having more laborers to having more and more knowledge workers. These workers need correct and timely information in support of their decisions and creating intellectual property. In this way information is being used in the creation of real business value.

However, these knowledge workers also face an explosion of data caused by a growing number of operational information systems, their increased scope, and nearly no economical inhibitors for storage of data.

On the one hand organizations have less time to react in a appropriate manner to changes in their environment. This means they have less time to produce relevant information to base their decisions on. On the other hand, the data overload leads to an increasing time span for organizations to produce relevant decision supportive information.

Above complications combined result in the so-called information gap. This gap makes it harder to harness data so that people can act on it to generate real business value.

In summary, today’s organizations do not effectively and efficiently cope with their data while this is a necessity to create a flexible organization which is able to perfectly adapt to her environment: the Intelligent Enterprise.
